FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Dear Emory,

This is the most exciting time of the year for Christians. We get to prepare

once again for the coming of Baby Jesus. We get to relive the joy of his birth and

remember the danger of his surroundings. It is the season when God sends his

greatest gift to us and in response, we give to others with gratitude.

The struggle between the spiritual and the commercial also grows to its

greatest strength. There have been decorations in stores even before Halloween.

Some stores are open on Thanksgiving and even on Christmas! It’s a battle that

comes into our homes as neighbors battle to have the best decorations, the finest

parties and the best gifts under the tree. All this has its place, but Jesus is still the

reason for the season. And the church is the place where that is most apparent.

There are a lot of opportunities to be involved in the celebration of Christ’s

birth beginning with the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Please bring in your nativity

set for a special blessing of the symbol of the Christmas miracle happening. If yours

is oversized, just bring one or two pieces to represent the set. Bring them forward

when called for the blessing. This is one part of a very special Sunday.

There is a schedule of Advent plans in this newsletter that you can post on

your fridge to keep the info handy. As a gift to others, please invite your friends and

family to one or more service or activity. In doing so, you share God’s gift with

others. Be sure to bring food and other items for our adopted families.

Our collection of food and other household items continues until Sunday December 17 when baskets will be packed after worship. Money is welcome too. Please see Nancy Chilcoat to be a part of the team. She needs a certain number of helpers

and will happily take you on a first come basis. Besides food and household

items, each family receives toys for the children, a gift certificate to a local store,

and simple gifts for the adults.

That list also includes the information for Christmas Eve and the three

services on the Sunday, which is also the fourth Sunday of Advent.

The last Sunday of December will be an early watch night service as we

prepare for the new year and God’s leading us into it.

May you be blest by all the ways to come closer to the miracle of Christmas.

Blessings,

Pastor Peggy

Inclement Weather Policy: As winter is almost upon us, now is a good time to review our Inclement Weather Policy: All evening events at the church will be cancelled on weekdays if Carroll County schools close or dismiss early. If the worship service or other events to be held on the weekend are cancelled due to

inclement weather, a message will be on the church answering machine and emails will be sent out. It should be posted on the major television channels as well.

Now On To Christmas Giving: We have received the names of the families that we will adopt this year for the holidays. Your generosity will make the difference between them having a blessed holiday or not. The food that is really needed is mashed potatoes, gravy, jelly, peanut butter, stuffing mix, syrup, some cereal and pancake mix. Nancy does not need vegetables or soup. If you would rather donate money she will use them for their gift cards. The Christmas board will be set up soon, with all of the items that our families need. Please pick out on or two items from the board. When you have purchased them, wrap them and put the paper with the item name on the package outside of the wrapped item and one of Nancy’s helpers will put a sticker on the front with that persons’ name. There are many opportunities for you to participate – look for donation sites throughout the church campus. Talk with Nancy Chilcoat if you have any questions.

UMW Christmas Party is scheduled for Dec. 1 @ 6:00pm. at Dee’s house. Don’t forget your gift for exchange. Parking will be provided.

AN EMORY OUTREACH The shelter was more than grateful for the socks donated by Emory UMC. In addition for future donations they asked that we consider underwear for men and women. Since it is nearing the time to set up The Paula Davis Giving Tree,
