Hello,myname isWarrenP. Sonodaand I’maJapanese-Canadian filmmaker known more formy crazy comedies than hard-hitting dramaticcrime films - but Things I Do ForMoney camefrom my desire to reconnect with my owncultural story, use my previous music videoexperiencetoputanewspinonamusic-movieandputonscreenacastofcharactersthatIcanrelate to – the fictional “Yaguchis” of our filmcould very well be my own "Sonoda" family(without all the bullets) and my two olderbrothers, Ronnie and Bobby, have always hadsuch an influence on me as a child that theyshareaspectsofNickandEliinthemovie.

In a way, the challenge facing ourmain protagonist Eli Yaguchi in Things I Do ForMoney is the sameground-game I’mplayingmyself as a filmmaker: Eli hasone chance toplayhis cello thebesthe’s everplayed to save his father’s life, steal an $8million dollar painting, impress the head adjudicator of thefamedmusicconservatoryhewantstogetintoandrescuehisbrotherfromalifeofcrime.Allthechipsareonthetableforhimtofailorsucceed.Andhegoesforit.Well,inaway,ThingsIDoForMoneyismyowncinematicswingatthefence.Thisallcameaboutwhenmyco-writerGaryNolanandIwerebattingaroundideasforasmall, contained indie film thatwewantedto make during the summer of 2018 afteryears of not being able to get any of ourpreviousscriptsproduced.Outofalltheideaswehad,wekeptcomingbacktothesetwophenomenalcello-playingbrothers that Gary knew through histeaching career in Hamilton, Ontario,Canada.GaryknewthatMaxandTheoAokiwere incredibly talented, got them on myradar years ago and we watched as theyprogressed into accomplished, popularcellistsinourhometown.Insteadofmakinga typically small, contained, 4-charactertalking-heads drama in one or twolocations,wecameupwithThings IDoForMoney with its 50+ speaking parts, 140+background roles, 35 locations, 6 celloperformances and5 action sequences– allshot in 13 main unit days and 2 days ofpickups.Whew!

Themaincharactersinthefilm,EliandNickYaguchi,aretwoJapanese-CanadianbrotherswhosharealotofDNAwithmyselfandthewayIgrewup.IwasnocelloprodigyandIcertainlydidn’ttrytostealan$8milliondollarpainting,butIwaswonderingwhoIwas,whatIcouldbecome,whatmyplaceintheworldwas - while also wondering what it meant to be “normal” andmaybe be less “Japanese”. As a third-generation,Canadian-bornJapaneseSansei,theraceforculturalassimilationwasanunconsciousdecisionmyparentsPatandRoySonoda,Nisei(second-generation)Japanese-Canadians,hadtomakeafterbeingletoutoftheB.C.InternmentCampsduringWorldWarII.ThisisthesameworldthetwoYaguchibrothersEliandNick(whowouldbefourth-generationYonsei)arenavigatingandwe ripple that sameconflictedbrother storyline in theirdad,Toshandhisbrother, JustJimmy’s,Sansei relationship aswell. Inmanyways, our characters are seeking their own redirection intheirlivestogettothenextlevel-thewayoutandup-tochangetheircourse.Relevantthemeswekeepplayingwithandinvestigateinthefilm.

ItwasalsoimportantformetosetthestoryinmyhometownofHamilton,Ontario,Canada,playingitselfonfilm.Thatspecificityofplace,of itspeople,ofthings Iknewandgrewupwith,helpgivethis film itsgrittyvitalityandkineticenergy.Wewantedtopushthelimitsofwhatasmall,passion-projectfilmcanbe.This istheveryfirstJapanese-Canadian-Cello-Crime-Heist-Caper-Music-Movie(!!)that Icanthinkof,anddreamup.Ihopeaudiencesfinditasfunandengagingaswedo!

He was a recipient of the 1985 Ellen Battell Stoekel Fellowship from YaleUniversity. He has taught FineArts courses at theUniversity of Alberta, BrockUniversity and FanshawCollege. Currently he is an art instructor and program supervisor at Robert Land Academy, amilitaryboardingschoolforhighschoolstudents.ThingsIdoforMoneyishisactingdebutinafeaturefilm.
