Tidbits® Invites You To
Eat Breakfast!by Patricia L. Cook
This Tidbits examines breakfast around the world. Many studies say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but when it comes to what people think should be on the breakfast table, there are quite a few differences.•The word breakfast means “to break the fast,”
meaning to eat again after hours of sleep and no food. Numerous nutritional studies have shown that people who skip breakfast are more likely to have problems with metabolism, weight and concentration.
• Thefirstuseoftheword“breakfast”wasinthe15th century when it was likely that porridge or breadwaseaten.Thefirstappearanceinprintthat “breakfast is the most important meal of the day,” was not from a medical professional or scientist; it was in the book “Metamorphosis” by German writer Franz Kafka in 1915.
•The typical full breakfast in the United States and Canada is based on the “full English breakfast,” although in many households this type of breakfast is now more likely to be reserved for weekends and holidays. When more people lived on farms and got up early for manual labor, a large breakfast was common. Now, it is not unusual to start the day with simply cereal or toast along with milk, juice and/or coffee.

•So, what does a “full English breakfast” include, and when did this custom start?
• In the 19th century, when men started to work regular hours in offices, 2-course breakfastsbecame popular. They'd start with porridge and then have bacon, eggs, tea and more later. This became known as the “full English breakfast” during the time of World War I when lighter, quicker breakfasts became popular.
•A customary “full English breakfast” has bacon and eggs as the star of the plate. They mightbeaccompaniedby sausage, fish, toastandmarmalade, grilled tomatoesandmuffinsor other breads. Typically, the British would start with orange juice, cereals, stewed or fresh fruit and tea.
•A full breakfast for the English may also have included oddities such as baked beans and black pudding. Black pudding is generally made by mixing pig’s blood with pork fat and oatmeal or barley. It is so popular in northern England that a festival is dedicated to it: the World Black Pudding Throwing Championships!
•The Irish also love a full breakfast like the British, including black pudding. They are likely to include white pudding and soda bread on the table as well. White pudding is similar to black except it doesn’t contain blood. Both of these “puddings” are formed into sausages.
•Large Scottish breakfasts also include dishes similar to those of the English, but they may add potato scones, haggis and oatcakes. Haggis is another odd sausage, made from chopped lamb’s heart, lungs and liver mixed with suet, oats, onions and seasonings and usually boiled. (Hungry yet?)
• If you are wondering when boxed cereals became popular for breakfast, this occurred in the late 1880s and was prompted by a backlash against large breakfasts. Many thought these large morning meals were leading to health problems. Cereal pioneers like W.K. Kellogg, Henry Perky and C.W. Post developed products that became extremely popular. Cereals were very important when eggs and bacon were rationed during World War II.
•There are many places in the world where the morning meal is not much different from other meals.
• In Mexico, it is not unusual to have beans and cheese served with tortillas. Just as for other meals, spicy food is welcomed at breakfast.
• InThailand, you’llfindaspicyfishdishwithmint and pork and served with rice offered by street vendors in the morning. Other dishes are available as well, dishes very similar to those
NUGGeT OF KNOWLeDGe
Muesli, which translates "mix," is a breakfast cereal developed by Dr. Max Bircher-Benner, a Swiss nutritionist, for patients at his sanitarium. He believed his patients were helped by vegetarianism and eating foods with as little processing as possible. Muesli is a combination of raw grains (mostly rolled oats), nuts and fresh and dried fruits. It is popular in Switzerland and throughout Europe and served with milk or yogurt. Granola is similar to Muesli, but granola has toasted oats and is usually sweetened.
served at mid-day and evening meals.•China is a very large country with a diverse
population representing many cultures, so there are multiple variations in breakfast foods. Probably the most common breakfast dish nationwide is rice porridge with pickled vegetables. Some people include hard-boiled eggs and steamed bread as well. In the north, many enjoy hot soy milk and fried dough sticks that are like unsweetened doughnuts. On the streetsinChinayoucanfindawidevarietyofsteamed breads, noodles and dumplings, some with meat or veggie fillings. Until recently, cow’s milk was not a part of Chinese diets. Now consumption of cow’s mike is encouraged, as is eating Western-style bread, as the Chinese have begun to follow the Western way of making children big and strong.
• In Russia, oladi are a popular breakfast food. Similar to pancakes, oladi are fried, soft inside and have a crispy edge. They’re usually eaten with sour cream, jam, honey or fresh berries.
•Another country with a popular pancake offering is Sweden. Pannkakor is a thin, flatcake, fried on both sides, similar to a crepe. It isusuallyservedwithafruityfilling.
•The French are known for the pastries they enjoy for breakfast — or anytime with a cup of strong coffee. The croissant is one of the famous pastries for which the French have been given credit, and they do serve them beautifully, but it was actually adapted from an Austrian pastry in that originated in the mid-1800s.
•The Austrian “kipferl” or “kipfel” was brought to Paris by Austrian August Zang when he opened a Viennese bakery in 1838 or 1839. French bakers loved the pastry and started imitating Zang’s “kipferl.” Their pastries became the “croissant,” which is French for crescent.
•Many places like the croissant now, including Portugal and Spain. Stuffed croissants and plenty of coffee are very popular at breakfast time. Another quick Spanish specialty is Pan a la Tomate, which is simple but delicious. It consists of bread rubbed with garlic and tomato and then topped with olive oil and salt.
• In Iceland, a hot and hearty breakfast is neededtofightoffthedark, icycoldmornings.Hafragrautur, or oatmeal, is served with raisins, nuts and brown sugar.
•Whether you want a hot bowl of cooked cereal, cold cereal or a full English breakfast with eggs, bacon and more, we hope reading this Tidbits will encourage you to try something new. Enjoy the “most important meal of the day!”■

Dear Robert: Lately, my wife has been developing a rash on her finger not long after she puts her ring on. I’m guessing it may be from some of the chemicals used in the process to make white gold that is becoming exposed. Is there any way to combat this? --George C., Farmington, MI
Answer: All metals including gold can oxidize when exposed to lotion and other chemicals, the ring should be thoroughly cleaned by a professional jeweler than rhodium plated.Robert Miller is a Master Certified Jeweler and Master Gemologist with over 35 years of experience. Lava RockLava rock is rock formed from the cooling and solidificationof lava issued fromvolcanoes. InNorth America, most lava rock is located in the continent’s western half.•Molten rock beneath the earth’s surface is
referred to by geologists as magma. Once this molten material is expelled through a volcano onto the earth’s surface, geologists then refer to it as lava.
•Lava cools rapidly in air or water, sometimes in a matter of minutes or hours. Because cooling is rapid, lava rock appears very uniform and (as geologistsdescribe)fine-grained.Bycontrast,granite is a coarse-grain rock, and when examined closely, it has a spotted appearance due to the many minerals in the rock. Lava rock generally is uniform in color with no spotty appearance.
•Lava rock that cools very rapidly looks like dark glass; rocks of this type are called obsidian. Some ancient cultures used obsidian to make rock-cutting tools.
•Lava rock that cools less rapidly forms basalt and rhyolite. Outcrops of basalt are very prevalent in the Pacific Northwest states ofWashington, Oregon and Idaho.
•An interesting place to see an array of lava rocks is Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve near Arco, Idaho. There you will see and can explore former lava tubes, volcanic cinder cones and rocks of varied, interesting shapes. In fact, this area was visited by NASA astronauts in 1969 while training for their visit to the moon.
•Craters of the Moon has within its boundaries another geological feature associated closely with volcanoes called the Great Rift. The Great Rift is the earth’s conduit through which lava moved to form the rock formations at Craters of the Moon. Lava coming through the Great Rift is also responsible for the Wapi Lava Field in southern Idaho.
•Lava rock is a material with multiple practical uses. Landscapers use it extensively for mulch in flower beds and gardens because of itsattractiveredorblackcolor, itsfireresistanceand its ability to hold heat and moisture. Lava rock is also used in grills and fireplaces todistribute heat more evenly across and between multiple heat sources (for example, multiple burners in a grill).
• Lavafieldsareexpansesoflavarockresultingfrom solidification of lava from one ormorevolcanic eruptions. Lava fields show up onaerial photographs as black splotches against typical earth hues of brown, grey and green. In theUnitedStates, lavafieldsareprevalent inthePacificNorthwest.
• If you are interested in seeing lava before it cools to lava rock, two places to visit are Stromboli volcano in Stromboli, Italy, and Kilauea volcano in Hawaii. Stromboli is one of the Aeolian Islands located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, west of the Italian peninsula. Because the volcano has been active for much of the last 2,000 years and its eruptions are visible from long distances at night, it is known as the "Lighthouse of the Mediterranean."
•The Kilauea volcano is located on the island of Hawaii, the largest of all the Hawaii islands. Eruptions have been nearly continuous since 1983. Lava erupting from the cinder-and-spattercone,namedPu`u`Ō`ō,flowsthrougha tube system about 6.8 miles (11 km) to the sea.■

• It was 17th-century French author Francois de la Rochefoucauld who made the following sage observation: "It is more often from pride than from ignorance that we are so obstinately opposed tocurrentopinions;wefind thefirstplaces taken, and we do not want to be the last."
• You probably know that Robert E. Lee was a general in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, and that he ultimately surrendered the war to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at the courthouse at Appomattox, Virginia. You might not know, though, that Lee had a pet hen that traveled with him everywhere. It's said that the chicken laid an egg under Lee's cot every morning.
• The National Restaurant Association, which tracks dining statistics, says that the most popular day for eating out is Mother's Day.
• In 1954, Swanson pioneered the frozen dinner when, after Thanksgiving sales had been lower than expected, the company found itself stuck with 10 railroad cars of unsold turkey.
• It's a timeless truth that many kids go through an awkward, gawky period during adolescence. In the 16th century, a boy experiencing this phase was known as a hobbledehoy.
• On the morning of a traditional Vietnamese wedding, the bride's mother visits the groom's family and presents them with a special plant, representing respect, and chalk that is pink, the color of happiness.

As an example debt such as taxes, student loans, child support, and criminal fees are not dischargeable thought bankruptcy. Dog Isn't Welcome at Wedding Venues
By Sam Mazzotta
Dear Paw's Corner: My fiance and I are getting married at the end of June, and we want "Suzee," our bichon frise, to be an important part of the ceremony. We agreed that she would be present as we exchange our vows, and will be in our wedding pictures. The trouble is that we cannot find a venue that allows dogs, other than service dogs, inside. And we even had to drop one pastor who said that he would not allow Suzee to be present when he led the ceremony! Can you help?

Dear Dr. Donohue: I have a friend whose glucose tests taken in the morning range from 140 (7.8) to 200 (11) and are never in the normal range. He is constantly thirsty and has other diabetes symptoms. His doctor ordered a hemoglobin A1C test, which came back as 5.2. The doctor told him that they no longer do the fasting blood sugar test, only the HbA1C, and that he is not diabetic, since his test is normal. Has testing for diabetes changed? Should my friend consult another doctor? -- L.P.
Answer: Up until 2010, doctors diagnosed diabetes on the basis of blood sugar (actually plasma glucose). A relatively new test, hemoglobin A1C, HbA1C or just A1C, has been added to the criteria for both diagnosing diabetes and monitoring diabetes control in the past year or so. Hemoglobin is a large molecule inside all red blood cells that grabs oxygen from the lungs and releases it to all parts of the body as blood circulates. Blood sugar coats hemoglobin. Since red blood cells last 120 days, the percentage of hemoglobin coated with sugar indicates how well-controlled diabetes is. An acceptable control level is one that is 7 percent or less.Fasting blood sugar, the specimen taken after at least eight hours of not eating, is still used for diagnosing diabetes. A level of 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L) or higher lands one in diabetes territory.A second way to diagnose diabetes is to give a person 75 grams of glucose (sugar) to eat and test the blood two hours later.A value of 200 (11.1) qualifies asdiabetes. Now a third way of making the diagnosis is
How Diabetes Is DiagnosedBy Paul G. Donohue, M.D.
employing HbA1C. One selling point for using it is that there's no requirement for fasting. HbA1C of 6.5 or greater makes the diagnosis.Your friend is a diabetic. His fasting blood sugar qualifies him as being one. Furthermore, he has adiabetes symptom -- perpetual thirst. He probably has to urinate frequently, another diabetes symptom. The fact that his HbA1C is normal doesn't cancel these facts. That test is only one of three. He should see another doctor. The diabetes booklet guides people through this prevalent and difficult illness. Readers can obtaina copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 402W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.Dear Dr. Donohue: A friend of ours is in a nursing home with pneumonia. We're afraid to visit her. Is pneumonia catchy? -- A.M.
Answer: A huge number of different germs cause the many different kinds of pneumonia. A blanket statement on transmission, therefore, is impossible. The pneumococcus (NEW-moe-KOK-us) bacterium is a prominent cause of pneumonia, especially in older adults. This germ can be spread in droplets coming from a cough or sneeze. However, 24 hrs of treatment renders the patient no longer a transmitter. You can bank on it that a hospital or a nursing home will not let you visit any patient who might be at risk of spreading any infectious disease.(c) 2012 North America Synd., Inc., All Rights Reserved
Don't Just Sit ThereNumerous studies have shown us two things: It's never too late to start being active, and a small amount of activity is better than none when it comes to better health.Nowthere'sanadditionalbenefit:Beingactivehelps keep depression and other psychological issues at bay. Not only that, but a recent study shows that those with "psychological distress are four times more likely to be functionally limited." The study, done on 91,000 adults age
65 and older, indicates that one-third of us don't get regular exercise, and the number goes up even more for those 75 and older.Another study on the same topic came to a serious conclusion: Those who have depression had better results from exercising three times a week than those who took drugs for their symptoms. All it took was getting 20 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise.Other researchers have approached senior health from a different angle: A Psychological Bulletin news release from the Harvard School of Public Health reported on a study that compared psychological well-being to heart health. It found that psychological well-being reduces thechanceofheartattackandstroke.Specifically, beingoptimistic, happyandsatisfiedwithlifecanreduce the risk of a cardiovascular event. Somehow those emotions not only protect us, but can slow down existing disease. How then do we use this information? A simplistic look might be this: If we elevate our mood with

Do you have a question that you would like to have answered? Email [email protected].
Dear Boo: What type of oatmeal is healthiest?-- Jamal J., Farmington Hills, MI
Answer: As you can see, there are different types of oat products out there on the market. The two kinds that you will most likely find on your supermarket shelf are “steel-cut” oats and different varieties of “rolled” oats. Steel-cut oats (my personal favorite) are the least processed of the two varieties and so retain the greatest amount of nutrients—especially the cholesterol-lowering soluble fiber found in oats, namely beta-glucan. Because steel-cut oats are pretty much “right off the farm,” they do take much longer to cook than the rolled type, but it is well worth the extra time and effort for their superior flavor, texture and nutrient composition.Rolled oats are what most Americans know as oatmeal and are often sold in familiar round cardboard containers. These oats have been steamed, dried, sliced and then flattened, producing the flat oatmeal shape that we have become accustomed to. There are actually three types of rolled oats: (1) old-fashioned, (2) quick-cooking, and (3) instant. The instant variety is the most processed of the three and has already been precooked—making it convenient to cook but unfortunately mushy in texture. In addition, the instant variety frequently has added sweeteners, salt and other flavorings. Your best bet is to choose the least processed type of oats such as the steel-cut or the old-fashioned varieties. If you need the time-saving convenience of instant, go for the plain instant packets and add your own sweetener—and also be sure to add a couple tablespoons of oat bran (the concentrated form of beta-glucan, much of which has been lost in the instant varieties).

TIDBITS GOES GREEN
If you live in an area where deer seem to waltz into your yard or garden and make a mess of your plants, consider using eggs to keep them at bay. A natural repellent can be made by making a solution of eggs in water with a ratio of about 1 to 10. Combine well and spray the liquid on vulnerable plants. The mixture will become odorous enough to keep deer away. Repeat the treatments when the mix washes away with rain or fades with time.

Dear Lisa: Can loud rock concerts, loud music heard through headphones and high bass volume damage your hearing? Where can I find information to support this? -- Kelly S., Novi, MI
Answer: The short answer is YES. Loud rock concerts and loud music heard through headphones generate enough volume that over time hearing damage can occur. Lisa M. Berch, MA, CCC-A, has been a board certified licensed audiologist since 1989. She practices at Healthy Hearing Center, Audiology & Hearing Aids, in Novi, Michigan.

May is Better Hearing Month!
Q: I am so hooked on "Scandal," the new midseason show on ABC, and I am especially glad to see Tony Goldwyn in a strong supporting role. How is he liking his new role as president of the United States?
-- Tina W., Atlanta
A: Like you, I love "Scandal," so I jumped at the opportunity to speak with Tony about his new role. He told me: "First of all, turning down the role of the president of the United States is difficult. That's going tobe an interesting character, but particularly I knew that with Shonda Rhimes writing a president that he'd be a pretty interesting president. The script was really well written and just a great recipe for really good storytelling."As an actor, I felt like these gifts kept being dropped in my lap. I'm really grateful to Shonda for involving me; each episode, I couldn't believe the stuff that I was getting to do. By the end of the season, it gets really interesting." Go to celebrityextraonline.com to read my entire interview with Tony, where he gives inside info about what to expect by season's end.Q: One of my favorite screen actors of all time is Anthony Hopkins. What can I see him in next?
-- Jared G., via e-mail
A: Presently, Anthony is filming "Hitchcock,"a movie about "Psycho," "Rear Window" and "Birds" director Alfred Hitchcock. Unless you want to wait until 2013 for the movie, Google "Anthony Hopkins Hitchcock" to see the eerily true-to-life transformation of the enigmatic actor to the horror auteur through the magic of makeup
and prosthetics.Thefilm also starsHelen Mirren, Scarlett Johansson and Jessica Beal, and definitely onmy must-see list for 2013. Q: Can you tell me what Brandon Routh has coming up?
-- Theresa G., Brighton Beach, N.Y.
A: Brandon has a new movie coming out May 18, which is quite a departure from portraying the Man of Steel. Brandon stars in "Crooked Arrows," about a reluctant coach who takes on a Native American lacrosse team. I spoke with Crystal Allen, who plays Brandon's love interest in the film, and she toldme: "Brandon's character, Joe, and I were high-school sweethearts. I give him a hard time. I challenge him throughout the movie. Brandon is such a nice guy, and he's got such a presence on film. He just reallyshines and he's really moving. He was great to work with."Q: How is Guiliana Rancic doing after beating breast cancer last
year? -- Audrey T., via e-mail
A: Guiliana, who beat breast cancer after undergoing a successful double mastectomy last year, is expecting a baby -- via surrogate -- with husband Bill. The baby, who is due later this year, is genetically Guiliana and Bill's; however, due to Guiliana's health issues, they decided to go with a surrogate to make sure the baby has a greater chance to be carried to full term.Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Book and Lyrics by Howard Ashman; Music by Alan Menken
For years now “Little Shop of Horrors” has made New York audiences scream with laughter. In this gleefully gruesome musical, Seymour, a poor florist’s assistant, allows his craving for fame and fortune to seduce him into playing nursemaid to a man-eating plant. Goings on surrounding the growing plant’s demand for more, more, MORE are accompanied by witty parodies of sixties music. Between bites, the carnivorous Audrey II, named after Seymour’s secret love, brings down the house singing rhythm and blues à la Otis Reading or James Brown!Performance Dates: 4/27 (8p); 4/28 (8p); 4/29 (2p); 5/3 (8p); 5/4 (8p); 5/5 (8p); 5/6 (2p); 5/11 (8p); 5/12 (8p); 5/13 (2p, Mother’s Day); 5/17 (8p); 5/18 (8p); 5/19 (8p).Tickets are available at both www.farmingtonplayers.org and the box office (248) 553-2955.

Dear Dr. Colbert: My dentist says I have some tooth decay. Can you tell me what causes tooth decay? -- Felicia A., Plymouth, MI
Answer: Tooth decay is caused by bacteria that collect on teeth and feed on the carbohydrates in your diet. If the bacteria is not removed it will produce acid that will wear away at the enamel on our teeth. If decay is left untreated, it can cause pain, infection and even tooth loss. To protect your teeth against decay brush your teeth atleasttwiceadaywithasoftbristledtoothbrush, flossdaily, visityour dentist regularly, and limit your consumption of sugary foods.

Ask The Periodontist: Dr. Steve Wolf
Dear Dr. Wolf: Can dental X-Rays increase my risk of getting brain cancer? --Jon W. Novi, MIAnswer: An irresponsible study in the scientific journal Cancer associated increased risk of “Meningioma”, a benign tumor with taking lots of dental x-rays. This alarming study made national news and has many people afraid. The study is misleading and unreliable, because, the researchers asked participants how many x-rays they had over 50 years instead of checking their dental records. Can you remember how many dental x-rays you received over even the last five years? What are the facts about dental x-rays?1. They expose us to very low levels of radiation: 2. We measure the amount of radiation in a unit called a millirem, much as you would measure in inches instead of miles for most purposes. 3. A dental x-ray exposes you to ½ to 3 millirem 4. A mammogram exposes you to 500 millirem per breast 5. Digital x-rays reduce the amount of radiation even more! 6. A complete full mouth scan today can use the same amount of radiation as one check up x-ray from 30 years ago. 7. They can expose hidden dental decay, reveal a dental abscess, cyst, or tumor,8. Dental x-rays reveal bone loss from periodontal (gum) disease, locate tarter build-up, and find foreign bodies within the gum or bone9. They show us if there is enough bone for the placement of dental implants. We are very concerned about minimizing the amount of radiation you receive at our office. That's why we use digital x-rays, cover our patients with a lead apron during procedures and only take necessary images and share them with you and your dental team. Dental x-rays are very safe and extremely important to establish and maintain oral health. They should be used when necessary and not avoided based on unfounded fears over radiation exposure. If you are interested in more information please call my office at (248) 380-8020.Do you have a question that you would like to have answered? Pruning TipsQ: I haven't pruned many of my hedges and trees in several years, and some of them have grown wild and ragged-looking. If they're past the blooming stage, is it safe to trim them? Also, any tips to make this task easier?
-- Carol in Oklahoma
A: Trying to tackle all of the shrubbery and trees in your yard can be daunting, even when it hasn't been several years since their last pruning. The best thing to do is take an initial tour of your yard with notebook in hand. Mentally split the yard into several sections, and then note what needs to be done in each: trimming, pruning or even removal of foliage.Next, tackle each section one at a time. Depending on your schedule, you may need to do one section each day. A particularly foliage-heavy section may take an entire weekend. You might need help from friends or relatives to
take care of large or excessively high hedges, meaning you'll need to plan a time for them to come over. And if a tree needs complex trimming -- for example, its branches are encroaching on the roof or on power lines -- you'll need to arrange for a professional tree trimmer to inspect it, provide an estimate and do the work.Pruning on your own takes a little practice, but don't worry too much about mistakes, as they will eventually grow out. Plants that have already bloomed can be pruned without a problem, and plants or trees that are still blooming are, by this time of year, safe to trim.As you'll likely be piling up a lot of branches and limbs, check with your local government about proper disposal of yard waste. Most have programs in place, such as scheduled pickup dates during the growing season, and guidelines for containers or bags that the trimmed branches should be placed in. If you hire a tree trimmer, be sure to ask how branches will be disposed of, and if that cost is included in the estimate.

Dear Robert: I sold a home last year on a “short sale” and just received a 1099 from my lender. I thought the Debt Forgiveness Act meant I was “forgiven” any tax consequence. -- Nanette A., Novi, MI
Answer: When a creditor forgives any portion of a debt that you owe, it can claim that debt as a loss on its annual profit and loss statement. This translates to a tax deduction for the business. If the amount forgiven exceeds $600, the creditor must send you a Form 1099-C to file with the Internal Revenue Service. Because the creditor wrote off your debt as a tax loss, the IRS requires you to claim the forgiven debt as income when you file your tax return for the year. IF the forgiven debt arose as a result of a foreclosure or short sale, you may be eligible for tax forgiveness via the Mortgage Cancellation and Debt Relief Act, butit isn’t automatic and you MUST still file the proper forms with the IRS! My best advice is to consult an accountant immediately and don’t ignore any 1099s!Bob Curran is the President and CEO of Century 21 Curran & Christie, ranked the #1 Century 21 Office in the Great Lakes Region and #7 in the USA in 2011.

Do you have a question that you would like to have answered? Email [email protected].
Dear Zvi: I am worried that my garage door is not properly balanced. How can I know if my door is properly balanced? -- Randy S., Northville, MI
Answer: A: There are several tests you can perform to tell if your door is balanced. Before testing your door, make sure to turn off your electronic opener. 1) Raise your door in 1" increments, and the door should stay in place. 2) When you lower the door, it should lower in a controlled manner and shouldn't slam down. 3) When you raise the door, it should rise at a controlled pace. 4) When the door is fully-raised in the open position, the bottom of the door should be aligned with the bottom of the header of the door opening.

Ask The Home Builder ExpertCompo Builders, Inc.
Dear Compo Builders: We are selling our home and want to properly stage it for a quick sale, any suggestions that are not too expensive?
-- R Palmer, Novi, MIAnswer: Staging a home for quick sale can be overwhelming for many homeowners. There are many professionals in the fieldwho, forareasonablefeecangiveyouexcellentdirectionto help your home present well. If you want to keep the cost of staging relatively low, you will have to skip some of the areas that may really detract from a good presentation. Replacing counter tops, tile ormajor fixtures can get very expensive, very quickly. And you know that the color or the counter top is not going to be what the prospect wants but if it is the great detractor in the room you may have to consider some of these as well. But, let’s start with the basics. Cleaning and de-cluttering will make a greater impression than practically anything else you can do. If the home looks spic and span and the corners of every room are meticulously devoid of any dirt, dust, grease and so on, the immediate assumption of the potential home buyer is that the home has been kept this clean the entire time you have owned it. Personal items, nick-nacks, family pictures, etc. are best stowed away in a few large boxes. If you need to use them for a family gathering at your home, it will be easier to pull a few things out of a few boxes and then re-stow them after the gathering. When a house is void of clutter and personal items, the possible buyer can more easily envision their own personal belongings and decorations on that uncluttered wall or surface. Dollar for dollar, paint can be your next best friend. For under $100 you can fill in some holes on thewallsw/ spacklingand roll on a new neutral color for the rooms that really need
attention. It makes the home look and smell cleaner and invites possibilities for the prospect. If you are not handy, find someonewho is andmake sure any paint job is doneprofessionally. Basements are often overlooked by the homeowner as it has collected “stuff’ for 10, 15 or even 30 years. Now is the time to clean it out. If your main mission is to move the home quickly, hold a garage sale, get what you can for the unneeded “stuff” and pitch or donate the rest. Then work in earnest on making the basement a bonus to your prospect. Clean it thoroughly, seal and paint the walls and if possible addressthefloorif thebudgetpermits. Evenalargerugortwo will go a long way to improve the previously dark and dankly basement. Make sure the lighting in the basement is sufficient and if youcan setupa table andchairs to createa recreation area it will make it more comfortable and again invite possibilities. If you have a ping pong table, pool table or card table and it helps stage a part of your lower level, use it.Many realtors prefer to show a home without the home owners present. But, no one knows your home like you do. No one is as passionate about its special features, the awesome neighbors, the great schools and so on. You can “tag along” and point out with enthusiasm to the potential home buyer any salient point that may tip the table to a sale.
At Compo Builders, Inc., we put our clients first with workmanship, quality, attention to detail, fair pricing and
technological possibilities that are second to none. - David Compo, President

Dear Marty: What is Low-Emmisivity (Low-E) glass? -- Paul N., Novi, MI
Answer: Low-e glass is manufactured by depositing a microscopically thin, transparent metal or metallic oxide layer on the glass. Low-e coatings reduce radiant heat loss, & can reduce the passage of UV rays. Use of heat-resistant (or absorbing) glass began in the 1950s, as did the use of reflective (or mirror) glass.Well, since 1845 Northville Lumber Company, a family-owned business, still is "what a LumberYard should be". Dear Larry: I’ve been told that there are different kinds of golf courses. Can you explain the different types of course and who can play on the different courses? -- Craig L., Northville, MIAnswer: There are four main types of golf.• Public courses: A public golf course is one that is open to the general public. Everyone who plays golf is welcome at a public golf course. Within the public category, there are two main sub-types - the municipal course and the daily fee course. • Resort courses: A resort course is a golf course that is part of a resort property. These courses are typically including a large, luxurious hotel, perhaps a spas and restaurants. Some resort courses are open to the public but others many restrict public access by requiring that you stay at the resort in order to play its golf course.• Semi-private courses: A semi-private course is one that both sells memberships and allows non-members to play. Do you have a question that you would like to have answered? Email [email protected].
Dear Dave: I have white smoke coming out the exhaust of my car. What does it mean?-- Paul N., Farmington Hills, MI
Answer: White smoke from exhaust usually means coolant burning inside cylinders. This can be caused by leaking head gaskets, cracked heads or block, leaking intake manifold or gasket, and could lead to major engine failure. This type of problem needs to addressed immediately by a professional. You should call us at Tuffy Novi at once. (248)-347-1080

Ask The Auto Sales Expert:Varsity Lincoln
Dear Varsity Lincoln: What can I do to improve my gas mileage when fuel costs continue to rise?
-- Mark R., Novi, MI
A: According to www.fueleconomy.gov – these are 2 key ways an owner can improve their MPG:Keep your engine properly tuned. Fixing a car that is noticeably out of tune or has failed an emissions test can improve its gas mileage by an average of 4 percent, though results vary based on the kind of repair and how well it is done.Fixing a serious maintenance problem, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, can improve your mileage by as much as 40 percent.• Fuel Economy Benefit: 4%• Equivalent Gasoline Savings: $0.15/gal
You can improve your gas mileage by up to 3.3% by keeping your tires inflated to the proper pressure. Under-inflated tires can lower gas mileage by 0.3% for every 1 psi drop in pressure of all four tires. Properly inflated tires are safer and last longer. The proper tire pressure for your vehicle is usually found on a sticker in the driver's side door jamb or the glove box and in your owner's manual. Do not use the maximum pressure printed on the tire's sidewall.• Fuel Economy Benefit: 3%• Equivalent Gasoline Savings: $0.12/gal
