ArIes (March 21 to April 19) Relationships continue to thrive, but watch for any telltale signs of potential problems. Take needed action now to set things straight before they become troublesome later. TAUrUs (April 20 to May 20) Your powers of persuasion, backed up, of course, by your considerable expertise, help you establish your case even to the most dubious decision-makers in your workplace.GeMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might still be a bit reluctant to face up to some less-than-pleasant realities. But the sooner you accept the facts, the sooner you can set about making some needed changes.CANCer (June 21 to July 22) Expect to make adjustments, even when things seem locked up and ready to go. But cheer up: At least one change could lead to something you’ve been hoping for.Leo (July 23 to August 22) The success of a recent project should do a lot to boost your self-confidence. You might want to start now to check out ways to make that long-deferred bigger and bolder move.VIrGo (August 23 to September 22) Ease up on the pressure you might be putting on the new person in your life. It takes time for a budding relationship to blossom. Show more patience and understanding.LIBrA (September 23 to October 22) You have lots of inner strength in reserve. Use some of it to resist intimidation from those who might try to impose on your good nature for their own reasons.sCorPIo (October 23 to November 21) The good news is that your on-the-job status is improving. The one cautionary note, however, involves a personal situation you might have been ignoring for too long.sAGITTArIUs (November 22 to December 21) Congratulations. Once again, your sharp Sagittarian “horse sense” helps you work through a complicated situation that would leave most people confused.CAPrICorN (December 22 to January 19) Plan on indulging yourself in some well-earned good times through much of the week. Then be prepared to face some thought-provoking issues by the 18th.AQUArIUs (January 20 to February 18) Positive factors continue to dominate following a recent change in both your professional and personal lives. Expect to make contact with someone from your past.PIsCes (February 19 to March 20) Workplace stability allows you to continue making progress on your projects. But don’t ignore your personal life. Spend more quality time with those special folks.

◆ It was pioneering British film director and producer Alfred Hitchcock who made the following sage observation: “Television has done much for psychiatry by spreading information about it -- as well as contributing to the need for it.”

◆ The grapefruit is so named not because of any relation to or resemblance to a grape (obviously), but because it hangs from the tree in grapelike clusters.

◆ Those who study such things say that the three most recognized words in the world are God, Coca-Cola and Titanic.

◆ Although darts is a traditionally English pub game, there are now more than three times as many darts players in the United States than there are in the United Kingdom.

◆ Jazz musician Glenn Miller was the recipient of the first gold record ever awarded, for the big-band hit “Chattanooga Choo-Choo.”

◆ The amount of fuel in a jumbo jet single tank would be enough to allow a car to drive around the world -- four times.

◆ If you had visited Peru in the mid-1980s, you could have bought toothpaste with cocaine in it.

◆ Before he became the celebrated author of such novels as “Pale Fire” and “Lolita,” Vladimir Nabokov was a tennis instructor.

◆ The longest game in the history of professional baseball was played between the Pawtucket Red Sox and the Rochester Red Wings in April of 1981. It lasted just shy of 8 1/2 hours, and ran for an unbelievable 33 innings.

→ On Aug. 16, 1896, George Carmack spots nuggets of gold in a creek bed near the Klondike River in Canada’s Yukon Territory. His lucky discovery sparks the last great gold rush in the American West. Over the next two years, as many as 50,000 would-be miners arrived in the region.

→ On Aug. 17, 1915, Charles F. Kettering is issued a patent for his “engine-starting device” -- the first electric ignition for automobiles. In the early years, drivers used hand cranks to start the internal combustion process that powered car engines.

→ On Aug. 14, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs into law the Social Security Act. Although it was initially created to combat unemployment during the Great Depression, Social Security now functions primarily as a safety net for retirees and the disabled.

→ On Aug. 18, 1940, Walter Percy Chrysler, the founder of the American automotive corporation that bears his name, dies in New York. Aside from automobiles, Chrysler was known for financing the 77-story Art Deco Chrysler Building skyscraper in midtown Manhattan. When completed in 1930, it was the tallest building in the world and the first manmade structure to top 1,000 feet.

→ On Aug. 19, 1953, the Iranian military, with the assistance of the United States government, overthrows the government of Premier Mohammed Mosaddeq and reinstates the Shah of Iran. As thanks for the help, the Shah signed over 40 percent of Iran’s oil fields to U.S. companies. However, the Shah was toppled from power in 1979.

→ On Aug. 13, 1961, East German soldiers begin building a wall between Soviet-controlled East Berlin and the democratic western section of the city. Berlin residents found themselves cut off from friends or family until the wall was dismantled in 1989.

Creative outdoor summer FunSummer is in full bloom, with plenty of time left to get out and play between now and Labor Day. Enjoy

your favorite family activities, or try something new on your sand-bucket list. The key is to jump on an idea when the inspiration strikes! As you experience the magic of together time, watch the special memories grow with your children. Here are “creativity on the go” ideas:

Hike and HuntOn your next hike to a familiar destination, such as a waterfall, fishing hole or scenic lookout, see the trek with new eyes and ears by challenging the kids to a surprise nature scavenger hunt. Before you leave, make a list of sights, sounds and smells you recall from previous outings on the trail. Copy the list for each hiker, hand it out at the trail base and let the explorers check off the finds as they discover them.

Enjoy Picnics at Public Parks

When you add an “s” to “park,” a whole new world of adventure opens for your family and friends. Check out venues in your area online, set dates on your calendar and meet up weekly with your friends and their kids until school starts. Bring a dish to share, or plan a group barbecue around picnic tables and a charcoal grill.

Go to free outdoor art and music fairs and listen to live entertainment as you wander booths and exhibits. At some art shows, observe how artists create new works “live ... in the open air,” known in French as “en plein air.” Your own pint-size poster-paint artists will be thrilled watching the swish of a brush at an easel.

Lasting Summer MemoriesAt the end of summer, produce an impromptu “Video Special.” Use smartphones, video recorders or tape recorders to interview family members like guests on a morning talk show. Save the recording,

including the bloopers!

◆ When patching cracks in plaster walls, if the crack is large or it’s a small hole, stuff it with wadded-up newspaper or steel wool in order to fill the gap. Apply the plaster over the top.

◆ Recipe substitution: For each cup of brown sugar needed, use 1 cup of white sugar and 2 tablespoons of molasses.

◆ If your washer oversuds because you accidentally added too much detergent, just add a half-cup of white vinegar to the wash water. It will dampen the extra bubbles. Then make sure to put the load through an additional rinse to eliminate soap residue in your clothes.

◆ Ever had to deal with early arrivals at your garage sale? If so, you know it can be annoying and disruptive. When advertising your sale, use the block number instead of your house number. It will still be easy to find, but you’re less likely to get staked out.

◆ “It can be hard to find a good contractor or company to provide a service. The best referral resource I’ve found is friends. Whenever someone I know has work done at their home or purchases an item I might be interested in, I always find out the details of who worked on it or where it was purchased, and whether my friends were satisfied with the outcome. Friends and even acquaintances usually are quite amenable to giving details, especially when they are either very pleased or very displeased with a job.”

Updates to make your neighbours green with envy (NC)—Whether or not we want to admit it, we all want our home to look its best and be the envy of the neighbourhood. But if you think that keeping up with the Joneses comes with a big price tag, you can think again. With a little elbow grease and creativity, your property can be the talk of the town, like this:

Making a Good First ImpressionYour home can’t look great if you can’t see it, so updating outdoor lighting is a great first step to achieving the best looking house on the block. Chances are your exterior porch lights or street lamp may be rusty or faded. Now, you can bring new life to your lighting with a single can of spray paint. Innovative products like the new Krylon Dual Paint and Primer is a one-step solution to easily transform any light fixture. Its unique formula primes the surface for adhesion, durability and coverage, while delivering a high-quality finish. Best of all, the com-pany tells us that Dual is now available in specialty finishes, such as hammered and metallic, that are perfect for adding an extra dose of style.

Are you still looking for more illumination? Adding decorative lanterns to walkways or porches is an easy and inexpensive way to add charm and light. You can often find these pieces at yard sales, thrift stores or dollar stores. Then simply painting in a matching ham-mered or metallic finish gives a bright and stylish look.

Quick ColourThe front door is a focal point of your home – especially with the added lighting you’ve up-dated – so be sure that your doors and shutters are a vivid shade. If yours have been dulled by years of sun and weather, it’s time to update with paint. For metal doors and shutters, you can use a variety of spray or bucket paints in your favorite hue. However, for plastic shutters, Krylon recommends its Fusion for Plastic as an ideal choice since it bonds to plastic without the need for priming or sanding.

A Tidy and Neat YardNo matter what the size of your front yard, a well manicured lawn is important to boosting your curb appeal. Simple one-weekend tasks like edging, trimming bushes and removing

unsightly weeds can make a huge difference without a lot of work or cost. To keep your efforts looking great, spray weed killer to maintain a polished look for the rest of the season. After the initial grooming, add new mulch and flowers in beds or in brightly painted pots for an extra pop of colour and style.

Fill in the BlanksThe final task to a great looking home that will have your neighbours lusting, is to repair or replace any elements that have deteriorated over time. Walk around the perimeter of your home to check for cracks in bricks or concrete, stains on the driveway or sidewalks, and loose shutters or downspouts. Sprucing up these basics will not only make a big difference to the exterior appearance, but protect your home from damages in the future.

Now, with all the home decorating and hard work complete, your neighbours will be green with envy at your beautiful home and be trying to keep up with you.

doN’T Be sHeePIsH!We owe a lot to sheep. These animals provide us with wool for sweaters, socks, coats and more as well as meat to eat and milk to drink or to make into cheese. • There are over 900 breeds of sheep in the world. Only about 40 breeds are raised in America, with Texas being the state that has the most. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the inventory of sheep and lamb in the United States in July 2010 was almost 7 million. • Sheep are gentle, timid and quiet animals. They are social and have a strong instinct to stay with their flocks, becoming agitated if they are separated. Sheep graze on short, ten-der grasses and clover. They graze for an aver-age of seven hours per day! • Many stories have been told of sheep being so stupid that they will follow each other off a cliff. This is due to their flock mentality, and it truly can happen. However, there have been studies and observations that show that some sheep are pretty smart.• According to www.sheep101.info citing a BBC News story from 2004, some hungry sheep taught themselves to roll across an 8-foot (3 m) cattle grid in order to feast on vil-lagers’ gardens! Hopefully someday this will be caught on video!

• Residents of Michigan are especially fortunatein this regard, since Michigan contains nearlyfour million cherry trees. Each of these produces between150to200poundsoftartcherriesayear.Consideringacherrypiehasabout250cherries,Michigan is a cherry pie lover’s dream.

DON’T BE SHEEPISH! (continued):• A breed known for high intelligence and great leadership ability is the Icelandic Leadersheep. These sheep will run in front of the flock, guiding other sheep through snowdrifts, across rivers and ice-covered ground. They have been known to take flocks back to the safety of their farm ahead of a blizzard.• Sheep belong to the ruminant classification of animals, characterized by their stomachs that have compartments to accommodate “cud-chewing.” It is often said that sheep (and cows, goats, etc.) have four stomachs, but actually they have one stomach with four parts. When sheep eat a mouthful of grass, they chew it only enough to wet it. The cud, called a food bolus is a “soft mass of chewed food” and goes to the first two parts of the stomach. When the sheep is full and lies down, it will regurgitate a cud and chew it thoroughly. After this thorough chewing, the cud will go to the last two parts of the stomach for the completion of digestion. • In the Western United States, where sheep are still overseen by shepherds in some mountainous areas, and rodeos are big entertainment, mutton busting is a fun event to watch. This is for small children, 4 to 7 years old, weighing less than 50 pounds (23 kg). The kids try to ride sheep bareback across the arena. The goal is to ride for six seconds hanging on to the sheep’s wool. Most riders don’t make it that long as the wooly sheep dislodge them quickly. The kiddos do wear helmets for protec-tion, and adults are close by to assist. • Sheep provide high-quality, useful products. Most sheep need to be sheared once a year and provide from 2 to 30 pounds (1 to 14 kg) of wool annually. Most sheep live 10 to 12 years, so they provide a lot of wool in their lifetimes. Some sheep, of course, are used for meat, milk and cheese. The best meat is from lambs.

Ban Pit Bulls?DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve been reading recent reports that some communities in the United States are trying to ban certain breeds of dogs, like pit bulls. I think this is a great idea, because pit bulls are so unpredictable and violent. Do you agree? -- Carol in Tacoma, Wash.

DEAR CAROL: Nope, I don’t agree. That’s because completely banning specific dog breeds won’t solve the problem of dog bites and attacks. Even dogs of breeds considered benign can attack humans or other dogs -- poodles being the first that come to mind. But, you argue, poodles aren’t violent! Well -- unfortunately, I’ve met a few. The fact is, all breeds of dog have the potential to bite humans. Owners must be aware of and accept this possibility.I try to educate pet owners about better ways to care for their pets. In the case of dog attacks, I feel that education of the owner is the strongest deterrent. That education should start before a person even becomes a dog owner, so that he or she can make the best choice of dog for the household. A pit bull or other type of guard or attack dog may not be ideal for a number of reasons beyond possible temperament: They’re big dogs; they’re powerful; they need lots of attention and training, no matter how nice they appear to be.Dog owners of all breeds -- not just those considered “dangerous” -- need to know the specific behavioral issues of their breed. They need to train their dog, and socialize the dog with both other humans and other dogs. The best way to learn how to do this is to enroll in group training classes with a certified trainer, an investment that pays off all the way down the road.

Q: Can you tell me when “Boss” will be back on the air? I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen next!

A: Kelsey Grammer’s political drama returns for its second season on Starz starting Friday, Aug. 17, for 13 all-new episodes. (In the week leading up to its premiere, Starz will be re-airing season one, so you can either get caught up on what you missed or refresh your memory.) I spoke with series co-star Nicole Forester, who

plays Maggie, ambitious wife of Illinois State Senator Ben Zajac, and she gave me some teasers about what to expect this season.“What you saw at the end of season one with Ben and Maggie is a good indicator of where they’re going, as far as Maggie taking the reins and doing whatever she has to do to keep her husband in a direction that will result in them going all the way to the Governor’s Mansion,” Nichole said. “This season is totally intense. Even though I’ve read the scripts and I know what’s coming, when I’m at home watching the episodes, I’m going: ‘Holy crap! I canÔt believe it!’ And there’s only going to be more of that in season two. Every episode is just loaded with surprises, and it’s just intense all the way around.”For my entire interview with Nicole and to learn more about “Boss,” as

well as what it was like shooting “Jack Reacher” with Tom Cruise, go to celebrityextraonline.com.

***Q: Can you tell me if “Justified” will be back for another season, and if so, when? Also, when will season three be out on video? This is my favorite show.

A: The Timothy Olyphant-starring Western crime drama will return to FX for a 13-episode fourth season in the beginning of 2013, although an exact date has not been given yet. If the release of the season three DVD follows in the pattern of the previous two, then it should be released in the weeks leading up to the season four premiere.

***Q: I have not seen any information on Alex Trebek since the news of his heart

attack in June. Is he out of the hospital? Is he back to taping “Jeopardy”?

A: Alex’s heart attack, which he suffered June 23 after doing some work around the house, was a mild one. He was released from the hospital after a few days and is doing very well. He even returned to work last month to tape new episodes of “Jeopardy.”

***Q: My wife and I have enjoyed watching “Memphis Beat” on TNT for the past couple of years, but we haven’t heard anything about its return. Any news would be appreciated.

A: The crime dramedy starring Jason Lee was canceled by TNT in October 2011 after the show’s second season. The series is not yet available on DVD.
