Cook Some of us spend a lot of time yawning and nodding our way through movies, airplane and auto rides, sermons, speeches and more. Imagine sleeping through an entire winter! Let’s explore the extreme sleep called hibernation. • Hibernation is a very deep, special sleep that animals use for protection during the cold winter months. All hibernators eat a lot of food for their bodies to store as fat, seek safe shelter for the winter months and become inactive or dormant. Some store nuts or other seeds to eat during the winter. • There are actually two groups of hibernators: deep sleepers and “true” hibernators. True hibernation involves greatly lowering breathing, body temperature and heart rate. Most people think of bears when the word hibernation is used. In fact, bears are not true hibernators but deep sleepers. They are inactive during extreme winter weather but may wake up during mild weather. They are easily disturbed by noise and can rise to protect themselves rather quickly. Many bears actually give birth during hibernation so they have to be aware and somewhat awake to tend to their cubs. Some scientists call the winter sleep of bears “denning” instead of hibernation or deep sleeping. turn the page for more! - All Name Brand tires available - - Large selection of Used tires - - We sell high quality Rims & Mags - - Installations & Balancing provided - 2460 Kingsway Ave. Poco unlimitedtireteam.com When you’re ready to re-tire “Call Aurora” Tel: 604-944-8353 Coquitlam Denture Clinic Ltd. #3-1471 Prairie ave. PIRATES!by Rick Dandes

They ruled the seven seas back in the 1600s and 1700s and even today are plundering sea vessels in international waters. They are pirates. From movies and books to real life, pirates fascinate people endlessly and probably always will. Tid-bits walks the plank this week, in honor of Na-tional Talk Like a Pirate Day observed on Sep-tember 19. • Although Hollywood pirates, such as Jack

Sparrow’s friends, like to grumble “arrr” or “arrrrgh” frequently, real pirates were not known to do so. Hollywood actor Robert Newton, who played Long John Silver in the 1950s, had a regional accent from the Cotswolds district of England where they like to roll the “r” a bit. However, your average real pirate did not.

• Pirates may have thrown men overboard, but no one was ever known to have “walked the plank.” Again, this one is a Hollywood myth.

• Lady Ching Shih of China became one of the most powerful pirates to have ever sailed the ocean blue. She commanded one of the most formidable pirate fleets in all of Asia during the early 1800s, with hundreds of ships under her command.

Q. Why do pirates always carry a bar of soap?

A. So if they’re shipwrecked, they can wash themselves to shore.

NFL Picks (in BOLD) by Mr. Zee SEA at CHI (-10) UPSET OF WEEK: SEA is pathetic

on the road (2-6) this year while CHI is good (5-3) at home. Even though SEA did beat CHI earlier this year, they will keep it close, but they will not win since CHI has a much superior defense.

NYJ at NE (-8.5) GAME OF WEEK: NYJ have a substantially better defense than NE. NE is undefeated at home (8-0) while NYJ are a great road team (6-2). This will be a close game with NE winning.

BAL at PIT (-3) PIT and BAL are very even. However, PIT has the best defense in the NFL and a better offense. Also the home field advantage will help PIT to win.

GB at ATL (-2.5) ATL is very good at home (7-1) while GB is bad on the road (3-5). ATL is a ball control team and this will keep Rodgers off of the field and drain the GB DEF.

Last week: 3-1 Season: 141-119

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Aspects call for care in preparing material for sub-mission. Although you might find it bothersome to go over what you’ve done, the fact is, rechecking could be worth your time and effort.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The week is favorable for Bovines who welcome change. New career opportunities wait to be checked out. You might also want to get started on that home makeover you’ve been considering.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You might have to be extra careful to protect that surprise you have planned, thanks to a certain snoopy someone who wants to know more about your plans than you’re willing to share.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Family ties are strong this week, although an old and still-unresolved problem might create some unpleasant moments. If so, look to straighten the situation out once and for all.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) Although the Lion might see it as an act of loyalty and courage to hold on to an increasingly shaky position, it might be wiser to make changes now to prevent a possible meltdown later.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your gift for adding new people to your circle of friends works overtime this week, thanks largely to contacts you made during the holidays. A sur-prise awaits you at the week’s end.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Don’t hide your talents. It’s a good time to show what you can do to impress people who can do a lot for you. A dispute with a family member might still need some smoothing over.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Be open with your colleagues about your plan to bring a workplace matter out into the open. You’ll want their support, and they’ll want to know how you’ll pull it off.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Trying to patch up an unraveling relationship is often easier said than done. But it helps to dis-cuss and work out any problems that arise along the way.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) While your creative aspect remains high this week, you might want to call on your practical side to help work out the why and wherefore of an upcoming decision.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Dealing with someone’s disappointment can be difficult for Aquarians, who always try to avoid giving pain. But a full explanation and a show of sympathy can work wonders.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Getting a job-related matter past some major obstacles should be easier this week. A personal situation might take a surprising but not neces-sarily unwelcome turn by the week’s end.

BORN THIS WEEK: You can be both a dreamer and a doer. You consider helping others to be an important part of your life.
