and there are over 100,000 flight attendants to serve them.

• A typical flight attendant will serve on three flights in a single work day. Each craft holds about 270 people. That’s over 800 passengers to deal with every single day.

FYI FLIGHT FACTS• If your flight is delayed, be aware that flight

attendants are paid only from the time a plane pushes back from the gate until it opens its doors at the next city. The most stressful part of every work day– the boarding and the deplaning– is not on the clock for most flight attendants. They don’t get paid anything at all if a plane is delayed while the passengers are still in the terminal, and they’re paid a fraction of their regular salary if the loaded plane sits on the tarmac for more than an hour. Therefore, flight attendants are just as frustrated by delays as you are.

• The reason you have to return your tray table to its upright and locked position is so you won’t impale yourself on it if the plane crashes. The reason you have to return your seat to its upright position is to make evacuation easier in event of a disaster, to minimize whiplash, and to prevent you from slipping under your seat belt in the event of a sudden stop. The reason you have to turn off headphones is so you can hear emergency announcements. The

reason you have to raise your window shade is so you’ll have a better feel for which way is up and give you better orientation if there’s an accident, as well as making it easier for rescuers to see inside. The reason you have to stow your carry-on items and put away your computers is to avoid having them act like airborne missiles. Lights are dimmed so you’re not blinded by light while dashing through smoke.

• Because people seated in the exit row might be called upon to open the emergency exit, there are 3 rules governing who gets to sit there. First, you have to be over 15 years old. Second, you must speak English. Third, you cannot require a seat belt extension. This is because you have to be able to see the exit; you have to be able to verbally direct people to the exit; and you have to be physically capable of opening the exit.

GARDENS, HOE!!In the next few weeks I will be

writing about my different hobbies and projects and gardening is on the top of the list.

Gardening and planting is in full swing and Lynette and I have hardly had time to plan out what we need to plant yet! I hope all of our readers who also garden are enjoying a little dirt un-der their fingernails... kinda gets you in touch with the earth.

We had a great garden last year and we are still

eating canned stuff off the shelves. I still can't quite get over how a jar sitting on the shelf for months or even years smells just like the day you canned it... and, as any "canner" knows, if it smells like any-thing else... something went wrong!

Lynette and I will do our best to share our progress in the garden here in Publisher's Corner, but for now, here's a little photo tribute to last year's efforts!

Take care everyone... we will talk to you soon!Sean Athey, owner/publisher

Enjoy the smell and feel the warmth of something special baking in your oven this week. These Austrian-style soft pretzels are a healthy and satisfying snack dipped in yummy mustard or as a unique accompani-ment to a big bowl of soup.

They also can be sliced in half while still warm for a tasty slider-style Reuben sandwich.

Making them is so easy, even your pre-schoolers can get in on the action, twisting and turning the soft dough. If you provide daycare in your home, the kids will keep busy creating their own shape or design for a unique treat fresh from their imagination. They are fun to make and bake at a birthday party or a sleepover, too.

My shortcut method uses prepared bread dough from the freezer section of your grocery store.

EASY SOFT PRETZELS (Makes 12)--all-purpose flour for flouring work surface--1 pound frozen white or whole-wheat bread dough, thawed --1 slightly beaten egg white--coarse salt, sesame seeds, caraway seeds or cinnamon sugar for toppings --mustard, for dipping (optional)

1. Place the thawed dough on a floured cutting board or kitchen counter. Cut it into 12 equal pieces and let the creativity begin.

2. Sprinkle flour on your hands and roll the pieces into a 1/2-inch thick by 18-inch long rope. Hold the ends with two hands and flip it around and around like a jump rope to help lengthen it. For a standard pretzel design, make a U shape with the rope and set it on the surface. Hold each end of the U, cross the rope over and twist the ends around each other one time, leaving about 2 inches from the cross-ing point to the tips. Lift and press the ends onto the curved

bottom of the U to form the pretzel. For a variation, make alphabet letter shapes or simple designs like a heart.

3. Transfer pret-zels to a greased or parchment paper-lined cookie sheet. Cover and allow to rise for about 20 minutes.

3. Preheat oven to 400 F. Let your child brush each pretzel with egg white and top with salt or other toppings.

4. Bake for about 15 minutes, or until browned. Cool slightly on a rack. Serve warm. Best if eaten the same day.

Q: How can I improve the efficiency of my air con-ditioner? I change the filter every month, but I haven’t noticed much difference in my power bills. -- Craig K., Fresno, California

A: Changing the air filter regularly is a great first line of attack in keeping power bills low, along with other benefits like reducing allergens inside your home. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, it doesn’t take much dirt buildup on the A/C coil -- about 0.42 inch -- to reduce its efficiency by as much as 21 percent. That can translate to a cost increase of more than $200 more per year (from $518 per year for an average home, to $725 per year, according to a Permatron release).

But regular maintenance also is important, even for

newer units -- and that includes outdoor and indoor components of your air conditioning system, such as the outdoor air compressor.

Schedule an annual checkup of the A/C system before summer weather really cranks up. This will run around $100. Make sure it’s performed by a certi-fied heating and air-conditioning professional, who should check the indoor and outdoor coils as well as the compressor and capacitors. The unit’s airflow and its cooling capacity also should be checked, along with refrigerant levels. The electrical components need to be checked as well.

Once your air conditioning unit is in tip-top shape, start managing your home’s temperature more effi-ciently. If you haven’t installed a digital programmable thermostat, now is the time. Not only does it maintain a home’s temperature more precisely, it also can be set to a higher or lower temperature based on when you’re at home.

To keep cooler air inside during the summer months, check or update weather stripping around windows and doors, which will help stop air from escaping as rapidly. Your home’s insulation also plays an important

role in improving energy bills, so have it checked and updated or replaced if needed.

HOME TIPUse ceiling fans in conjunction

with air conditioning to better circulate air throughout the house.

survived to continue her profession, taking a position on the RMS Titanic less than two years later, in 1912. That didn’t end well, as we all know, but once again, Jessup survived. Amazingly, she continued her oceangoing career, and during World War I she served as a nurse aboard the Hospital Ship Britannic. When the Britannic struck a mine and sank, Jes-sup was pulled underwater and hit her head on the keel of the ship. Despite her injuries, she was rescued once again. Three maritime disasters didn’t seem to faze her, though; she remained a stewardess for the rest of her career.

of her career, Dr. Alice Howland — an accomplished professor of com-munication — stumbles over her words during a lecture. In time, Alice (Julianne Moore) loses more words and gets lost during her routine runs. While still physically healthy, she is diagnosed with early-onset Alzhei-mer’s disease. Alice’s husband (Alec Baldwin) and three adult children (Hunter Parrish, Kate Bosworth and Kristen Stewart) must stand by as her memory and intellect fade.

The film manages to capture the dra-ma and pain of the experience without giving in to melodramatic tear-jerk-ing. There is a satisfying presence of human compassion and love, but nothing is sugarcoated. This type of illness drama comes off as Oscar-bait, but Moore gives a performance that deserves recognition.

Blackhat (R) — In this recent inter-national-techno-computer-thriller, we are asked to suspend disbelief as Chris Hemsworth (“Thor”) is called upon to save the world because he is The Greatest Hacker in the World. So Thor is a computer geek in this one, but a hunky, stoic computer geek who also is as tough as any Liam Neeson char-acter. Hemsworth’s mission is to stop a bad-guy hacker (they’re called “black-hats”) who started his cyber-crime spree by blowing up a nuclear reactor.

Director Michael Mann sure can do atmospheric thrillers (like “Heat” and “Collateral”), but this one just can’t make it on style alone. Though it’s punctuated by some stunning action sequences, a lot of the run is just mud-dled plot points covered by scenes of people typing and pointing at inde-cipherable symbols on computer screens.

Mortdecai (R) — Johnny Depp minces and ponces his way around the

world as a mustachioed art dealer, the latest in Depp’s long line of whimsical weirdos who garner half-hearted favor from audiences. Charles Mortdecai (Depp) is an Englishman with upper-crusty affectations, and a big problem with back taxes. To save his status, Mortdecai has to go on a madcap mis-adventure to track down a high-value painting. To his credit, Depp commits to his shtick. Unfortunately, the wacki-ness isn’t so charming, and the jokes seem to get funnier the more they are repeated.

The Cobbler (PG-13) — Max (Adam Sandler) is an apathetic cob-bler who gets all literal when he walks in other people’s shoes. When he uses a magic machine to repair somebody’s shoes, Max can become that person (or a physical duplicate of that person) just by trying on their shoes. The expe-rience teaches him to care about his community, but it also lets him act like an amoral jerk by committing crimes as other people. Sandler seems to be trying a little harder here, but the rest of the movie is too safe to be funny and too sugary to be dramatic.

Asparagus Is Perfect for Spring Recipes

Nothing says spring is here like a beautiful bunch of crisp asparagus. While asparagus is available year-round, it’s much better when pur-chased locally.

Asparagus is easy to select and prepare, and comes in a variety of vibrant colors, including green, violet, purple and white. It is commercially available fresh, frozen and canned. The stalks range in size from colossal to small. Different types and colors of asparagus can be used without any noticeable difference in taste, so mix and match colors and sizes for visual interest.

Asparagus should be crisp and firm, not limp or wrinkled, with tightly closed tips. Dull colors and ridges in the stems are an indication of a lack of freshness. The stalks should not be limp or dry at the cut and be of uniform thickness.

If you’re planning to use the aspar-agus on the same day, rinse the stalks under cool water and pat dry with a paper towel. Smaller stalks can be broken or cut at the point where the stem naturally snaps. Peeling the end of thicker stalks with a paring knife or a vegetable peeler removes any woody stems and can be done up to 2 hours before cooking. Place the prepared asparagus in a plastic bag in the refrigerator to stay crisp until ready to cook.

Never wash or soak fresh asparagus before storing. If the asparagus is bound with a rubber band, remove it, as it will pinch and bruise the stalks. Asparagus can be stored for up to two days if the stalks are trimmed and placed upright in a jar with about an inch of water in the bottom. Cover the asparagus with a plastic bag and store

in the refrigerator.Asparagus cooks in minutes and can

be prepared steamed or boiled in the microwave or oven. It tastes delicious hot or cold, and it also freezes well if blanched first in hot water.

Asparagus is a nutritional power-house. One-half cup of cooked aspar-agus contains significant amounts of folic acid, vitamin C, potassium and beta-carotene. It’s also a heart-healthy food, and a natural diuretic.

This versatile vegetable works well as a room-temperature appetizer, blended into a soup, as a flavorful side dish, the main ingredient in a col-orful salad or as part of a main course like my recipe for Lemon Chicken With Asparagus. Preparing asparagus is a delicious and nutritious way to celebrate spring.

LEMON CHICKEN WITH ASPARAGUS

4 chicken breasts, about 3 pounds, washed and fat trimmed and removed 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon pepper 1 1/2 teaspoons poultry seasoning 4 garlic cloves, chopped 1 red bell pepper, chopped 1/2 pound asparagus, stalks trimmed and cut into 1 inch

pieces 1 teaspoon lemon zest 1/2 cup chicken stock 3 cups cooked rice

1. In a large non-stick skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat. Season chicken pieces with salt, pepper and poultry seasoning. Place the chicken, skin-side down, and cook for 5 to 7 minutes. Turn the pieces skin-side up, and cook until golden brown and done, about 5 minutes.

2. Stir in garlic and red bell pepper. Add asparagus and cook for 1 minute. Stir in zest and chicken stock and bring to a simmer. Cover and cook for 3 minutes. Serve immediately over hot rice.

Quick Asparagus CrepesFor a quick but elegant lunch, dazzle guests with these cream

sauce-topped asparagus crepes.

2 pounds asparagus1 tablespoon olive or salad oil2 tablespoons all-purpose flour1 1/2 cups milk1/4 teaspoon salt1 package (10-ounce) flour tortillas, 6- to 7-inch (about 8 tortillas)1/2 pound Muenster or Swiss cheese, thinly sliced1/2 pound cooked ham, thinly sliced

1. Hold base of each asparagus stalk firmly and bend stalk; end will break off at spot where stalk becomes too tough to eat. Discard tough ends; trim scales if stalks are gritty.

2. In 2-quart saucepan over medium heat, in hot olive or salad oil, cook flour 1 minute. Gradually stir in milk and salt; over high heat, heat to boiling, stirring constantly. Reduce heat to low; simmer 1 minute. Keep sauce warm.

3. In 12-inch skillet over high heat, in 1/2-inch boiling water, heat asparagus to boiling. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook asparagus 3 to 5 minutes until tender-crisp; drain.

4. Top a tortilla with one-eighth of cheese slices, one-eighth of ham slices, and one-eighth of asparagus spears; roll up. Secure with a toothpick if necessary. Repeat with remaining tortillas, cheese, ham, and asparagus, working quickly so tortillas do not dry out.

5. Place rolls on broiler-safe platter; pour sauce over rolls. With oven rack at closest position to source of heat, broil tortilla rolls 5 minutes or until sauce is lightly browned. Discard toothpicks. Serves 4.

USS South Dakota (pt. 1 of 4) pt. 2 next issueUSS SOUTH DAKOTA was laid down on 5 July 1939

at Camden, NJ, by the New York Shipbuilding Corp.; launched on 7 June 1941; sponsored by Mrs. Harlan J. Bushfield; and commissioned on 20 March 1942, Capt. Thomas L. Gatch in command.

After fitting out at Philadelphia, SOUTH DAKOTA held shakedown training from 3 June to 26 July 1942. She stood out of Philadelphia Navy Yard on 16 August and headed for Panama. The battleship transited the Pana-ma Canal on 21 August and set course for the Tonga Is-lands, arriving at Nukualofa, Tongatabu, on 4 September. Two days later, she struck an uncharted coral pinnacle in Lahai Passage and suffered extensive damage to her

hull. On 12 September, the ship sailed for the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard and repairs.

SOUTH DAKOTA was ready for sea again on 12 October 1942 and began training with Task Force (TF) 16 which was built around aircraft carrier USS ENTER-PRISE (CV 6). The task force sortied from Pearl Har-bor on 16 October to join TF 17, which was centered on carrier USS HORNET (CV 8), northeast of Espiritu Santo. The rendezvous was made on the 24th; and the combined force, now operating as TF 61 under Rear Admiral T. C. Kinkaid, was ordered to make a sweep of the Santa Cruz Islands and then move southwest to block any Japanese forces approaching Guadalcanal.
