This week, Tidbits has lots of information about the Irish, everything from St. Patrick to Notre Dame. Celebrate St. Paddy’s Day by learning some inter-esting facts about the Emerald Isle.

ing which time Succat took on the name Patri-cius, he began his 29-year-long mission in Ire-land. Ancient legend tells of Patrick standing on a hilltop holding up his wooden staff, banishing all the snakes from Ireland. Because there were no snakes in Ireland, it’s believed this was merely symbolic of Patrick driving out the evil and pagan philosophies.

• Patrick wasn’t made a saint until the early 17th century, hundreds of years after his death in the year 461. March 17 is the anniversary of his death and is his religious feast day.

• Although we think of the color green when St. Patrick is men-tioned, blue was the first color to represent the hero. In 1783, The Order of St. Patrick was founded, the senior order of chiv-alry and fellowship of knights. The Order of the Thistle already used green for their uniforms and the Order of the Garter used dark blue, so the Order of St. Patrick used a shade of sky blue. Military uniforms were of “St. Patrick’s Blue” and during the time of King Henry VIII, and the flag of Ireland was a gold harp on a blue background. The harp remains as the coun-try’s national emblem today.

• Between 1846 and 1900, about 2,873,000 people emigrated from Ireland to America, making it the second largest nationality group of immigrants, second only to Germany. The most predominant occupation of those newcomers was that of skilled weaver.

• In 2010, about 34.7 million U.S. residents claimed ancestors from Ireland. What were the most com-mon Irish surnames of these folks? The last names of Murphy, Kelly, and O’Sullivan are considered the top three “most Irish.” Other common Irish surnames include Walsh, O’Brien, Byrne, Ryan, O’Connor, O’Neill, and O’Reilly.

• Ireland has had its influence on geographical lo-cations in the U.S. Seven communities are named Shamrock, including locations in Texas, Oklaho-ma, and West Virginia. Sixteen other towns are named Dublin, sharing the name with Ireland’s capital. North Carolina is home to the commu-nity of Emerald Isle, population 3,655.

• St. Patrick’s Day often brings beer and taverns to mind, but that tradition didn’t start in Ireland. The Irish Parliament declared the day a religious holiday in 1903, meaning that all the pubs were closed. In 1970, that bill was overturned and the day became a national holiday rather than a reli-gious observance.

• The tradition of a St. Patrick’s Day parade began in America, not Ireland. New York City was home to the first parade, held on March 17, 1762. Irish soldiers serving in the British army organized the celebration to honor the Catholic feast day of Ire-

land’s patron saint. Today, New York’s parade is the largest in the world with more than 200,000 marchers along the Fifth Avenue route. Close to three million spectators observe the parade, which does not allow automobiles or floats.

• Canada’s longest-running parade is in the city of Montreal, where it first took place in 1824..

• The three-color Irish flag – orange, green, and white – was created in 1848, and is symbolic of the country’s politics. The orange stands for the Irish Protestants, green for the Catholics, and white

represents the hope that peace be reached between the two. • Have you ever heard of the trifolium du-bium? That’s the name given to the shamrock by botanists. The early Celts referred to the shamrock as the seam-roy, and considered this three-leafed clo-ver a sacred plant with mystical properties. Legend has it that St. Patrick used the sham-

rock to explain the Holy Trinity to first-century Irish pagans. During the 17th century when the English began seizing Irish land and prohibiting the use of their native language and Catholic religion, many Irish started wearing the shamrock as a symbol of pride in their heritage.

• The Irish word lobaircin means “small-bodied fellow,” and has been modified a bit to the Eng-lish word “leprechaun.” These little imps date back to the early Celtic beliefs in fairies, those tiny men and women with magical powers, who used those powers for either good or evil. Lep-rechauns were seen as grumpy little men, whose duties were to mend the shoes of the other fairies. We’ve all heard of the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Folklore claims that the little men have great treasures stored in crocks, and use trickery to protect it from others. If a leprechaun is cap-tured by a human, he has the magical power to grant three wishes in exchange for his release. In 1959, Walt Disney Studios released the film Dar-by O’Gill and the Little People, which gave us the image of cheerful and friendly leprechauns, but in Irish folklore, they are cantankerous and mis-chievous.

• Indiana’s University of Notre Dame is home to the Fighting Irish, a team that played its inaugu-ral game in November of 1887. In 1918, Knute Rockne took over as head coach and his record of the highest winning percentage (.881) in foot-ball history, either college or professional, still stands. Notre Dame has produced the second largest number of players drafted into the NFL, the greatest number of Heisman Trophy winners, and ten former Irish have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Every home game has been sold out since 1966, with the exception of one Thanksgiving Day contest against the Air Force in 1973, when the students had gone home for the holiday.

FAMOUS WOMEN OF THE WORLD:SHIRLEY TEMPLE BLACK

The most popular child star of all time, Shirley Temple, brought a ray of sunshine to the troubled folks of the Great Depression era. How much do you know about this bright and talented individ-ual who was a success not only on the screen but in public service as well? Follow along as see!

• Born in 1928, Shirley was the daughter of a bank employee father and a homemaker mother, who enrolled her in dance school at age three. When a talent search was conducted at the school, Shirley was signed by Educational Pictures and appeared in a number of movie shorts, as well as modeling for cereal ads. The 1932 movie Red-Haired Alibi brought Shirley her first feature film role.

• The first feature film created specifically for Shirley was 1934’s Bright Eyes, which featured her famous number “On the Good Ship Lollipop.” Over 500,000 copies of the sheet music were sold following the movie’s release. At the age of six, she received a miniature Juvenile Oscar for her 1934 accomplishments, and her feet and hand prints were added to the concrete forecourt of Grau-man’s Chinese Theater.

• By the time she was six, Shirley had already starred in 20 movies. The Shirley Temple doll was intro-duced, wearing a polka-dot dress modeled after the one she wore in 1934’s Stand Up and Cheer! By 1941, sales on the doll had topped $45 million. The sizable list of her other products included a line of clothing, soap, dishes, and books. Shirley also endorsed Quaker Puffed Wheat, General Electric, and Packard, among others. At age sev-en, her merchandise royalties were double the in-come from her movies.

• Following the huge success of Heidi, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, and The Little Princess, Shirley performed in her last film as a child ac-tress in 1940 at age 12. The film was The Blue Bird and was her 44th movie. Her popularity declined as she entered adolescence, and she made just a few films as a teen and young adult. When she was 15, Shirley met an Army Air Corps sergeant named John Agar, and at age 17, she married him. Their daughter was born when Shirley was 19, but the marriage was over after four years.

• December, 1950 was the time of two momen-tous occasions in Shirley’s life – she announced her retirement from the film industry at age 22, and she married wealthy California businessman Charles Black. This union would endure 54 years until his death. She entered the political arena in 1969, when Richard Nixon appointed her as the U.S. Representative to the United Nations. Under Gerald Ford, Shirley served as Ambassador to Ghana and White House Chief of Protocol. Her assignment under Ronald Reagan was that of a foreign affairs officer with the State Department. During the George H.W. Bush administration, she was the Ambassador to Czechoslovakia. She became a best-selling author in 1988 with the re-lease of her autobiography Child Star.

This week’s game of the week was the first round of the 4A state playoffs for both the Glenwood Springs Demons and the Greeley Central Wildcats. This game looked to be a favorable matchup for the Wildcats but Coach Graefe knew that once in the tournament, anything can happen. Keep-ing his team focused on the Demons instead of looking to the second round was the most important task.

As Greeley Central feared, Glenwood Springs kept pace from tip-off to the end of the third period. If the Wildcats wanted to insure themselves a trip to play Frederick in the sec-ond round, they would have to get it going in the 4th.

Thanks in part to this week’s Loveland Ford Player of the week, Matt Garcia, the Wildcats

went on a scoring frenzy in the last period of play; outscoring the Demons 25-10. Gar-cia finished with 24 points and three steals while Greeley Central won 63-44. That win

gave them a second round matchup with the Frederick Warriors the following Fri-day. Greeley Central took that game as well; 62-55.

Later on in the weekend, Greeley Central played Wasson in the Sweet 16 but ended up losing 78-61.

Stay tuned to 1310 KFKA for the latest on all the North-ern Colorado State Basket-

ball Tournament news.

Tidbits takes publishing into the 21st CenturyTidbits has been entertaining people while they wait in Northern Colorado for over 20 years. It started out as a small, one-color 4-page publica-tion distributed in plastic containers placed on counter tops in restaurants and other venues. In the late 1990s Tidbits caught up with free-publica- tion trends and began publish-

ing in a full-color tabloid format. This move dramati-cally increased readership and ad sales.Back in the 1980s and 1990s Tidbits’ competi-tors were either imitators of Tidbits or other free publications. Today the competitors are Smart-phones, iPhones, Droids, iPads and other hand-held tablet computers. To compete in this 21st Century marketplace, Tim Mundy, publisher

of Tidbits of Douglas County (Parker, Castle Rock, High-

lands Ranch and Lone Tree) and Ron Ross have created a new business model for Tidbits. It is a strategy that combines the traditional print version of Tidbits with a digital on-line version readable on mobile phones and tablet comput-ers.A prototype App for Tidbits has already been

developed and is in the final stages of testing. Other creative ways to engage our readers via both hard copy and digital are being developed and will be announced when ready.

Tidbits of Greeley ExpandsThe fun stuff readers love and the ads thou-sands of people peruse every week in Tidbits of Greeley is now being seen in Centerra, Loveland and Crossroads with distribution continuing in Evans, LaSalle and Eaton. Further distrubtion is planned for Windsor, Johnstown and Milliken, which will complete our economic impact area.A strong reader base for Tidbits already exists in Loveland as the folks there have been reading Tidbits for over 20 years. Historically, the paper was linked with Fort Collins, however, recently the two areas were separated and Ron Ross, Pub-lisher of Tidbits of Greeley, immediately took advantage of the opportunity to gain ownership of the Loveland area.

Welcome to Tidbits, Loveland!

Reason #4: To WorkI’m showing my age here, but there is an old

country song performed by Tennessee Ernie Ford titled “Sixteen Tons.” The song is about a miserable coal miner who could never seem to get ahead no matter how much Number 9 coal he could haul out of the mine.

The chorus went like this:“You haul Sixteen Tons, whadaya get?Another day older and deeper in debtSaint Peter don’t you call me cause I can’t goI owe my soul to the company store.”We could update that song now and call it “Six-

teen Hours”. For many, it seems that no matter how hard or how long we work we still end up owing our soul to the company we work for or the profession we have chosen.

Now with iPhons, Droids, email, and Internet networks we can extend our work to every mo-ment of our lives no matter where we may be. Last week I called a client and she answered her phone in Orlando. She said she couldn’t talk for long be-cause she was in line for the Jungle Cruise at Disney World and was about to board.

Well excuuuuuse me! Why did she even answer the phone? Wasn’t she on vacation? Yes she was but she thought I might be one of her clients and she didn’t want to miss the chance for more business!

Been to a little league ball game lately or to the waiting room for a dance class? Look around and you’ll see moms and dads on their SmartPhones swiping their finger back and forth, checking email, making business calls and surfing the web while al-legedly watching their kids play baseball!

More than anything or anyone else, we allow our business to invade our lives. No one in our family

is as important as our clients, our vendors, our co-workers, our managers/bosses/employers, and even our competitors. We allow them to interrupt family meals, steal us away from family gatherings, sched-ule us in other cities on important anniversaries, and compel us to come in to work early and stay late.

There’s no question that we live and work in a highly competitive world, and that company loyalty is good, but the way we let our profession/job/com-pany control our schedule, steal our time, and in-vade our family leaves us exhausted and befuddled.

So we willingly work long days at the office, spend isolated hours in airports, and put our company or profession before our mate and children. Then, at the end of our “16 Hours” whada we get? Another day older and deeper in debt and farther removed from the really important people in our lives – our wives/husbands/children/parents/friends.

But what else are we supposed to do? How do we tell our boss “NO” or our client “my kid’s play-ing soccer” or our project manager “I can’t, it’s our wedding anniversary!”

Of all the reasons we allow people into our lives, perhaps this is the area over which we feel the least control. We think our job or profession is more important than anything or anybody on earth. We believe that it cannot function without us; that the whole thing depends on our personal presence. Ei-ther that or we’re scared to death that it can func-tion really quite well without us and we don’t want anyone to find out!

We end up running as fast as we can chasing the wind and never catching anything much more than a little more stress for today than we had yesterday.

If I’ve described you, it’s time to stop letting eve-ryone else run your life. Find out who and what are truly important to you then give them the best that you have to offer.
