Neatest TIDBITS® UNCOVERS THINGS SET IN STONE – GRANITE by Patricia L. Cook Granite is a rock formed by the slow cooling of molten material called magma found deep be- neath the earth’s surface. Typically, granite con- tains the minerals quartz, feldspar and mica. • All of us have probably seen granite as a rock in science class, as tombstones in cemeteries, as countertops in kitchens and in many memorials worldwide. It can also be observed in natural land features such as Stone Mountain near Atlanta, Georgia. • Stone Mountain Park contains the largest mass of exposed granite on earth. A carving on one side of the large granite rock is of three Confederate heroes, President Jefferson Davis, Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. It is the biggest bas relief sculpture in the world. (Bas-relief sculptures are made by chipping away at slabs of rock.) • The Confederate figures measure 90 x 190 feet (27 x 58 m) and are surrounded by a carved surface that covers three acres (1.2 ha). It is recessed 42 feet (13 m) into the mountain. The idea for the memorial was hatched in 1909, but it was not dedicated until 1970. • Carver Gutzon Borglum started the project, but his work was later totally blasted from the mountain. He went on to his most famous work of art, Mount Rushmore. turn the page for more! Q: What did the big rock say to the little rock? A: Don’t take me for granite! TIDBITS GETS FIRED UP ABOUT

NATIONAL BOSS DAYby Stanley Drummond

Bosses are people, too. (Really!) And every year on October 16, America pays tribute to them.• Actually, National Boss Day was created in

1958 by an Illinois secretary named Patricia Haroski. She chose October 16 because it was her father’s birthday. Her father also happened to be her boss at the time. Nevertheless, she felt that bosses in general were underappreciated, and registered the date with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as an official observance.

• Interestingly enough, a 2005 survey done by an international human resources consulting firm revealed that the majority of employees would not trade places with their boss. The primary reason given was the change that would result between them and their co-workers. They could no longer ignore or laugh at any slackers in their department; they’d be responsible for any poor performers.

• Hallmark started selling Boss Day cards in 1979. While they don’t reveal actual sales figures, they do disclose that the “holiday” is poised to break into the list of top 10 card-send-ing events within the next few years.

•On Feb. 12, 1809, Abraham Lincoln is born in Hodgenville, Ky. As an adult, Lincoln's sense of humor may have helped him hide recurring bouts of depression. He admitted to friends and colleagues that he suffered from intense melancholia and hypochondria most of his adult life.

• On Feb. 10, 1846, Brigham Young leaves Nauvoo, Ill., and begins leading 1,600 Mormons west across the frozen Mississippi River to a temporary

refuge at Sugar Grove, Iowa. It was their first stop in a westward migration that eventually brought them to the Great Salt Lake in Utah. By fall nearly 12,000 Mormons had made the trek.

• On Feb. 7, 1914, the silent film "Kid Auto Races at Venice" premieres in theaters, featuring actor Charlie Chaplin in his first screen appearance as the "Little Tramp." Movies converted to sound in the late 1920s, but Chaplin held out until his film "Modern Times" (1936).

• On Feb. 13, 1945, a series of Allied firebombing raids begins against the German city of Dresden, reducing the town to rubble and killing as many as 135,000 people. It was the most destructive bombing of the war. Little, if anything, was accomplished strategically, since the Germans were about to surrender.

• On Feb. 9, 1964, the Beatles are introduced to

America on "The Ed Sullivan Show," singing "All My Lovin'," "Til There Was You" and "She Loves You." It is estimated that 73 million Americans watched the show.

• On Feb. 8, 1983, gunmen steal the champion Irish racehorse Shergar from a stud farm owned by the Aga Khan in County Kildare, Ireland. The 5-year-old thoroughbred stallion was worth $13.5 million. Despite a highly publicized search by authorities, Shergar was never seen again and no ransom was paid.

• On Feb. 11, 1990, in a major upset, Buster Douglas defeats Mike Tyson, the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, in 10 rounds at a boxing match in Tokyo. The loss to Douglas was the beginning of a long, downward spiral for Tyson, which included jail time and boxing license revocation in Nevada.(c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Watch the labels for granite cleaners containing chemicals that will pollute your home and our water sources. There are now many products available for cleaning granite countertops that claim to be environmentally friendly. Look for the newer granite cleaners that contain enzymes. There are many different enzymes in nature, and through a lot of scientific study, there have been discoveries of enzymes that will break down the dirt and germs on your countertops without harming your family. The enzyme cleaners will also preserve your shiny finishes to keep your granite looking great.

Granite City, Illinois, is where graniteware was first produced in 1874. Two German immigrants, Frederick and William Niedringhaus, found kitchen utensils being coated with a white material while visiting their homeland of Germany. They bought the process and established a patent when they returned to the United States. The utensils they made were coated in ground granite and hence, named graniteware. In 1986, the National Graniteware Society was started for collectors of graniteware (also known as Agate or Enamelware).

Two county workers were working in a park. One would dig a hole, and then the other would fill it up -- with the same dirt that just came out. An observer watched for a while, and then asked what they were doing. “Oh, I guess it looks funny, doesn’t it? The guy who plants the trees is home sick today!”

A monadnock (from where Mount Monadnock in New Hampshire gets its name) is, “a single rock peak above a plain that remains after the surround-ing land has been worn away by glaciers.”

Your 2 Percent Windfall

The amount you pay for Social Security will temporarily drop for 2011. In the past you and your employer have both paid 6.2 percent of your annual gross income into the Social Security fund. This year your portion goes down to 4.2 percent. Here's how that looks in real numbers:--If you make $30,000, your Social Security tax will fall from $1,860 to $1,260, thus saving you $600. That's $50 per month.--If you make $40,000, your Social Security tax will fall from $2,480 to $1,680, thus saving you $800. That's $66 per month.--If you make $50,000, your

Social Security tax will fall from $3,100 to $2,100, thus saving you $1,000. That's $83 per month.--If you're self-employed you have been paying 12.4 percent of your income to Social

Security. For this year, that will drop to 10.4 percent. The government, one assumes, wants you to spend that extra money out in the marketplace to help the economy get back on its feet by creating other jobs. A better plan is to use it to help yourself. Here are a few things you can do with that (albeit small) amount of money:¥ If you have credit-card debt, pick a card and increase your monthly payment by that amount, perhaps even rounding up to the next $10 increment.¥ Catch up on past due accounts that have been costing you extra in fees and interest.

¥ Add the extra as a principal payment on an existing loan, thereby shortening the life of that loan.¥ If you habitually run up debt at Christmas, once that debt is paid off, put the extra money in a Christmas savings account at the bank. By the end of this year you'll have enough to pay cash for all your purchases.Whatever you do, don't take on new payments on the assumption that you'll continue to have that increased amount in your pocket over the long haul.

NOTE: If you usually file early and itemize your deductions, the Internal Revenue Service doesn't want your tax return yet. It's not ready. The reason is that computers haven't been programmed to accommodate a few new changes in laws. Aim for the second half of February. If you use computer software, be sure to get the latest updates.
