By Samantha Weaver• It was comedian-turned-U.S. Senator Al Franken who made the following sage observation: “Mistakes are a part of being human. Appreciate your mistakes for what they are: precious life lessons that can only be learned the hard way. Unless it’s a fatal mistake, which, at least, others can learn from.”

• Those who study such things say that 1 percent of the world’s lizard species have no males. The females reproduce by parthenogenesis, which produces offspring that are clones of their mothers. • Amazon’s Kindle, Barnes and Noble’s Nook, Sony’s eReader -- it seems that everywhere you look these days people are reading onscreen. You may not realize, however, just how long digital books have been around. The first e-book was manually typed into a computer way back in 1971, when Michael S. Hart, the founder of Project Gutenberg, chose the Declaration of Independence to be the first literature so digitized. • A woman in Tennessee was once arrested for biking while intoxicated -- and she was on a stationary bike at the gym at the time. • According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, if you’re like the average American, you drink 22.7 gallons of coffee every year. The surprising thing about that statistic isn’t how much it is, though -- it’s how little. It seems that in the 1940s, Americans were drinking twice that amount of java. • If you look at the innards of a Boeing 747 airplane, you’ll find a whopping 171 miles of wiring. • If you consider surface area covered rather than population, the world’s largest city is in Inner Mongolia, where Hulunbuir covers more than 160,000 square miles.

For every positive financial decision you make, there can be a negative flip side. A news release from the National Foundation for Credit Counseling outlines just how to look at some of those decisions.

Using automatic bill paying: Having payments automatically dealt with makes bill paying something you don’t have to worry about ... until you do have to worry about it because you neglect to delete those transactions from your check register and you overdraw your account.

Using reward cards: You’re told you can earn points

for air travel or cash back, but that can cause you to use the card more often just to increase your rewards. At the same time, those hard-earned rewards programs can change at any time, with new rules and levels to reach.

Bundling your services: You can often get a cheaper rate if you combine cable television, fast Internet and your cell phone into one plan. The savings disappear if you opt for a more expensive plan based on what you perceive you’re saving.

Co-signing loans: On the positive side, you’ll be helping someone establish credit of their own when you agree to co-sign a note. On the negative side -- and it is a big negative -- that credit amount is deducted from your own availability because you are equally respon-sible for the loan.

Giving up the use of credit: The biggest benefit is that you no longer pay interest. That interest can be expensive, especially if the credit is used for items like groceries.

You’ll be paying for that dinner for a long time. On the other hand, someday you’ll need credit, perhaps for a big item like a home or vehicle. Without a good credit history, you’re likely to be stuck paying atrocious rates or not be granted credit at all.

Closing credit-card accounts: It can be so satisfying to pay off a credit card, and your reaction might be to close the account. Don’t. That credit is part of your over-all credit profile because that available amount figures into the calculation of all your credit. When you delete a source of available credit, you change your debt ratio.

Before you make any financial decisions, consider any possible consequences.

answered in detail in the booklet on those topics. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1102W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Our 22-year-old granddaughter

has developed an uncontrollable giggle. She giggles before, during and after everything she says. Each time we talk to her, the giggles and their frequency get worse. She is basically shy and appears to be nervous, and says she is not consciously aware of her giggling. She says her friends have remarked on this, too. Is this a tic disorder? Is there something a doctor

can do to help her? Is there medication? -- S.N.

ANSWER: Underlying anxiety, stress, shyness and social phobia set in motion reflex defenses for people who harbor these traits. It's their way of coping with situations that generate discomfort. It's not a tic, although it is somewhat similar. Both are involuntary.

I would first talk to the young lady in a compassionate way and tell her that this behavior is misinterpreted by people and that she should make a conscious effort to suppress the giggling. Only if the giggling cannot be controlled and only if it's causing her to suffer socially would I turn to medical people for help. Yes, there are treatments and medicines that can control anxiety and phobias, but a trial of self-treatment should come first.

• • •Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them

in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am in the eighth month of my first pregnancy. I've a friend who keeps telling me to have a C-section. She says it's quick and painless. I never considered this and wonder about its wisdom. What would you recommend? Does having a C-section mean all future deliver-ies have to be done the same way? -- K.M.

ANSWER: Cesarean sections can be lifesaving for the infant and for the mother. The reasons for having one don't include speed of delivery simply for speed's sake or for avoiding labor pain. You realize that a C-section involves surgical incisions, which, after the anesthesia wears off, are painful. And you realize that you have to recuperate from this operation as you would from any operation.

Furthermore, all surgery involves potential dangers and complications. Serious bleeding is always possible. The uterus can become infected. Injuries to other pelvic organs can occur.

Natural childbirth is painful, but the pain can be minimized in a number of effective ways. I believe you'll be surprised at how tolerable childbirth is.

As for future pregnancies, the standard teaching used to be that once a woman had a C-section, all her future deliveries had to be C-sections. That's no longer true. Second deliveries after a C-section can be vaginal deliveries, depending on some important circumstances. One of those is where the incision for the section was made.

Have you discussed this with your doctor? Do so. I'll be surprised if the doctor agrees to a C-section solely to avoid pain and speed delivery.

Fall means packing lunches, fi xing snacks after school and preparing treats for outdoor weekend adventures. Enjoy this whimsical, tasty and “good for you” traditional treat whenever and wherever you and your kids have a snack attack. In fact,

your school-age kids will enjoy preparing it themselves for the family.

Be assured, you won’t have to fight the vegetable wars on this

one. Using fresh, crisp celery, it’s a winner all the way around. Plus, the basic recipe and all the variations taste so good, you’ll enjoy inviting these “ants” to the table!

Here’s the stuff you’ll need for six snacks:- 2 stalks of long, crisp celery with ends trimmed- 6 tablespoons of creamy or chunky peanut butter- 30-35 raisins

Here’s the fun:1. Wash the celery well and let it dry.2. Use a table knife to fi ll the hollow side

of each celery stalk with peanut butter. 3. Arrange raisins on top of the peanut

butter to resemble ants scampering about on a log. An adult should cut each log into 3 pieces with a sharp knife.

Extra ideas:- Invite other critters to the log and use

dried cranberries; chopped, dried apricots; or sunfl ower seeds in addition to or instead of the raisins.

- If you are allergic to peanuts, you may still enjoy this snack by substituting the peanut butter with hummus or cream cheese in a variety of fl avors.

- It’s fun to stretch your imagination. When I used small-curd cottage cheese instead of peanut butter, the “ants” looked like they were crawling on a snow-covered log!

Extra “Kitchen Talk” tips: While you and your kids prepare this healthy treat, tell your kids what your favorite snack was when you were their age. Did you make Ants on a Log, too? Talk about the activities you did after school and what your favorite subjects were in school.

Q: I love teddy bears and recently inherited one that has been in my family for almost a century. It is a blond-colored mohair bear made by Farnell, with glass eyes and defined paws. I would like to get an idea of how much it is worth for insurance purposes. Can you help me? -- Susan, Amsterdam, N.Y.

A: One of the newest guides is the nifty Col-lector’s Guide to Teddy Bears, by Judith Miller and published by Firefly Books. Miller, who had a Merrythought Bear as a child, claims your bear was crafted in about 1918 and is worth in the $1,500 to $3,000 range, depending on condition.

• • •Q: When I was a kid, I took my PB&J sand-

wiches to school in a “Star Trek” lunchbox made by Aladdin. It is still in fairly decent condition with

Teddy Bear

its original thermos bottle. I have been offered $150 for it, but am hesitant. What is your advice? -- Charlie, Los Gatos, Calif.

A: Your lunchbox was manufactured in 1968 and is valued at $450, according to Toys and Prices, edited by Karen O’Brien (Krause, $19.99). I con-

tacted two collectors, who both agreed with this assessment.

November 25 - December 1, 2010

Just what does Brian France want to change?

The NASCAR monarch -- after all, stock-car racing has a clearly defined royal family and order of succession: Bill I, Bill II, Brian I -- thinks if times are bad, the only possible solution is change.

The Internet hasn't changed as much in the past decade as NASCAR.

Why not wait on the fans for once, instead of asking them to adapt? The Chase, which made finishing 12th as important as first (for 26 races),

is in its best shape since 2004, when it debuted. Somehow, by the strangest quirk of fate, one race remains and Jimmie Johnson actually doesn't have it sewn up.

Johnson, unbeatable and unloved, thinks winning it this year might actu-ally decrease the number of fans who dislike him. He's going into the final race without the lead. Could the specter of Johnson the ... underdog ... be raised?

"It would probably be received better than the ones in the past, with the runaway show we've had in a couple of them," he said.

It's worth a shot, yes?Lead changes and exciting finishes are up. The flip side, of course, is that

Dale Earnhardt Jr. is down.NASCAR changed its grading system and put everyone on a curve -- or

What If NASCAR Tried Stability?maybe all the courses are strictly pass/fail -- for 26 races. It made all the cars so close to identical that Johnson himself might not be able to tell a Ford from a Chevy without those handy headlight decals. It revved up the action with rules that make the old "racing back to the caution flag" seem safe. The number of laps aren't even reli-able anymore.

Some fans are ticked off. Some are just tired.

Maybe change has been transacted at so dizzying a pace that people just can't keep up. And contradictions flourish.

With cars that look just alike, inexplicably, one m a n u f a c t u r e r, Chevy, dominates as never before.

Exciting races are perceived widely as just the opposite. "Boring" is just a strange word to be used in relation to what has taken place on the tracks this year, but fans say it every day.

Every change is sold as cost-cutting, but none of the teams ever actually save any money because, before they get a chance to do so, more changes

emerge from that god-forsaken Research and Development Center.

Even change gets old when it never stops.

• On Dec. 6, 1884, in Washington, D.C., workers place a 9-inch aluminum pyramid atop an obelisk of white marble, completing the construction of the Washington Monument. A city law passed in 1910 restricted the height of new buildings to ensure that at 555 feet, the monument would remain the tallest structure in Washington, D.C.

• On Dec. 12, 1914, the Dow Jones Industrial Average suffers its worst percentage drop (24.39 percent) since it was first published in 1896. It was the first day of trading since the New York Stock Exchange reopened in November 1914 after being shut down due to the start of World War I earlier that year.

• On Dec. 9, 1921, an engineer at General Motors discovers that when he adds a compound called tetraethyl lead to gasoline, he eliminates the knocking that internal-combustion engines make when they run. Q: One of my all-time favorite actresses is the beautiful and talented Jacqueline Bisset. What is she up to lately, and what can I see her in next? -- Paula F., Tulsa, Okla.

A: You can catch the international superstar, who turned 66 in September, in the Hallmark Channel’s “An Old-Fashioned Christmas,” which premieres on Saturday, Dec. 11. It is the sequel to Hallmark’s highest-rated film of 2008, “An Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving,” an original movie based on a short story by famed American novelist Louisa May Alcott. In this sequel, Jac-queline reprises her role as Isabella Crawford, a wealthy philanthropist traveling the world with her granddaughter, Tilly.

Of revisiting the role in the new movie, Jac-queline told me: “It’s a journey. My controlling character is having difficulty keeping Tilly in line for what I think is best for her. Isabella has good instincts about her granddaughter, but she is controlling and interfering, and she feels that is her responsibility. We are very close, but she also has seen the other side of me, which can be very suffocating. Life is complicated; relationships are complicated.”

• • •Q: I know that “Friday Night Lights” started

on DirecTV in October, and I wondered if there

are plans to bring it back to NBC again in the new year, as in years past? -- Eva, via e-mail

A: NBC will indeed be airing the fifth and final season in 2011, after the show ends on DirecTV’s The 101 Network, as per its agreement with Di-recTV. However, an exact date has not been an-nounced as of this writing. In the meantime, you can reacquaint yourself with the show on NBC’s website, which is streaming season-four episodes online until June 2011.

• • •Q: The summer series “The Glades” on A&E

was a great show with good plots and characters. Will this show be returning anytime soon?

-- Barbara E., via e-mailA: “The Glades,” the first sea-

son of which premiered on July 11 and ended on Oct. 3, drew record ratings for A&E in the range of 3.6 million viewers, making it the most watched original drama se-ries in the network’s history. As of the now the date is still unknown, but the show has been renewed for a second season.

• • •Q: I could not agree more with

your statement that the networks don’t give new shows a chance. I was furious when Fox canceled “Lone Star” after only two epi-sodes. It was different, well-writ-ten and had great actors. Instead, we end up with more of the same, lame shows. -- Donna W., via e-mail

A: I know, Donna, I know. If our squeaky wheel is loud enough, maybe the networks will listen. These days it seems a safer bet to take a chance on a cable network’s new show -- e.g., the aforementioned “The Glades” -- as cable networks tend to nurture their new shows, not cut and run at the first sign of trouble like network TV.

• Here's a great bit of advice given to a friend who recently gave birth to a darling baby

boy: When you receive some of the more-complicated items from your gift registry, try them out right away. Before the baby comes, that is. You'll have little time to set them up and learn how to work them with a newborn to care for.

• Line a measuring cup with a plastic sandwich bag or plastic wrap to keep it clean between uses if you know you will be using it for multiple ingredients.

• "I go through a lot of papers. Sometimes, instead of using one of those rubber fingers (and definitely instead of licking my finger), I twist a wide rubber band loosely but securely around the tip of my index finger. It really works." -- R.F. in Massachusetts

• "Clean a buildup of starch on your iron by wiping it down with a solution of diluted vinegar -- one part vinegar to three parts water. If you have a curling iron or flat iron for your hair, you can get rid of hairspray gunk the same way, just dampen a cloth with the mixture and wipe the iron clean." -- F.P. in Pennsylvania
