Tidbits salutes the U.S. Army on its 235th birthday on June 14. This week we also salute the Canadian Forces. Known as “His Majesty’s first Independent Company of American Rangers,” the first Colonial American fighting unit was formed in 1747. Though it served England, the Rangers were American soldiers. The earliest reference to a Canadian mili- tary unit organized in a school dates from 1861; six years before Confederation. The Militia General Orders of June 3, 1861 au- thorized a Volunteer Militia Rifle Company, Class B to be called “Trinity College Vol- unteer Rifle Company.” Although this rifle company was more of an Officer Training Corps than a cadet corps, the beginnings of the Royal Canadian Army Cadets had been formed. The Canadian Forces, formed officially on Feb. 1, 1968, was the result of the unifica- tion and merging of the Royal Canadian Navy, Canadian Army and Royal Cana- dian AirForce. An unordered “shot heard around the world” that occurred on April 19, 1775, at Lexing- ton Green near Boston quickly started the War for Independence. At this battle, the first in the Revolutionary War, eight Ameri- cans were killed and 10 wounded. On June 14, 1775, Congress approved the raising of 10 companies of riflemen to enlist in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia until the end of the Revolution- ary War. These troops were known as the Continental Army. continued on page 2! SALUTE THE ARMYby Rick Dandes

Two hun-dred and two years ago, the United States’ third president, Thomas Jef-ferson, in a message to Congress said, “For a people who are free, and who mean

to remain so, a well-organized and armed militia is their best security.” That Colonial militia was a forefa-ther of today’s armed forces, which keep us free and safe. Tidbits salutes the U.S. Army on its 235th birthday on June 14. This week we also salute the Canadian Forces.

Known as “His Majesty’s first Independent • Company of American Rangers,” the first Colonial American fighting unit was formed in 1747. U.S., provides military support to civil au-thorities, and trains, sustains, mobilizes and protects strategic land forces world-wide.The U.S. Army has over 400,000 enlisted • soldiers and 76,000 officers. With headquarters in Atlanta, Ga., the U.S. • Army Reserve consists of about 250,000 soldiers. It fields a large portion of the sup-port staff, especially in civil affairs, engi-neering, transportation and maintenance. The Army National Guard fields approxi-• mately 370,000 troops (not including Alas-ka, Hawaii and Guam). It can provide eight combat divisions, one armored cavalry regiment and 21 combat brigades. The secretary of the Army is the civilian • head of the United States Army and reports to the secretary of defense for operational authority. He is named by the president and approved by the Senate. The Canadian Forces were heavily in-• volved in World War II and the Korean War, but since then, from the 1950s on, Canadian soldiers have generally been used in peacekeeping missions, assisting the United Nations.

Chewing Gum (continued)Even before an open treaty was signed • between Colonial Americans fighting for independence and France, the French had secretly helped the cause of the Americans. France sent America money and army supplies and, in addition, able Frenchmen had come across the Atlantic to join the American army. The most noted of these was the Marquis de Lafayette.By the end of the French and Indian War, a • new weapon had appeared on the frontier in Pennsylvania and to the south, one far better suited to guerrilla warfare than the musket. This weapon was later to become known as the Kentucky rifle.Congress established the U.S. Military • Academy along the Hudson River, at West Point, New York, in 1802.In the early 1900s, General Samuel Young • became the army’s first Chief of Staff and the first aeronautical division was set up within its signal corps. The “Star Spangled Banner” officially be-• came the National Anthem in 1931.It’s about time: Private First Class Clar-• ence Wallaert was shot in the hip by a German sniper while fighting against the German Winter Line in Italy on Dec. 30, 1943. Wallaert bandaged his own wound and provided 12 hours of rifle support for his Army comrades advancing into the Liri Valley--the “gateway to Rome.” Nearly 66 years later, Wallaert, 86, was awarded the Bronze Star Medal at Scott Air Force Base, Ill., for his meritorious actions during World War II.June 6, 1944: D-Day. In the largest, exclu-• sively American field command, 1.3 million men stormed the beaches at Normandy in the greatest amphibious attack in history. In late 1944, in the wake of the allied forces’ • successful D-Day invasion of Normandy, France, it seemed as if the Second World War was all but over. But on December 16, with the onset of winter, the German army launched a counteroffensive intended to cut through the Allied forces in a man-ner that would turn the tide of the war in Hitler’s favor. This was The Battle of the

Bulge, where the courage and fortitude of the American Soldier was tested against great adversity. It’s a hit. The U.S. Army announced on • Dec. 12, 1957, that “The Army Goes Roll-ing Along” (“Caisson Song”) was to be ver-ified as their official song.

It was something “special.” In 1952 Colo-• nel Aaron Bank and Colonel Russell Vol-ckmann, both former OSS members, convinced Army officials of the need for unconventional warriors. Bank established this new organization’s headquarters at Fort Bragg, recruiting former OSS officers, airborne and ranger troops, and seasoned war veterans. This new group was dubbed Special Forces, a designation derived from the OSS whose operational teams in the field were given the same name in 1944.Did you know that Army soldiers no longer • roll up their sleeves? In order to ensure a more uniform look, the brass decided that the sleeves would no longer be worn rolled up, even in the summer. First, this had a practical reason as it helped reduce sun and other skin injuries. Second, it was all part of the Army’s current initiative to instill a warrior attitude in the soldiers of always being prepared for combat. Most infantry units had never authorized the sleeves to be rolled up. Lastly, the design of the new ACU’s made rolling up the sleeve ex-tremely impractical. The largest army component is the U.S. • Army Forces Command (FORSCOM), which executes the land defense of the

On • June 15, 1877, Henry Ossian Flipper, born a slave in Thomasville, Ga., in 1856, is the first black cadet to graduate from the United States Military Academy at West Point. Flipper was appointed a second lieutenant in the all-black 10th Cavalry at Fort Sill in the Indian Territory. On • June 19, 1885, the Statue of Liberty arrives in New York Harbor as a symbol of Franco-American friendship. Nine years late in arriving, the 300-foot statue was a gift from the people of France as a celebration of the Declaration of Independence centenary in 1876.On • June 14, 1909, folksinger and Academy Award-winning actor Burl Ives is born near Hunt City, Ill. Ives is perhaps best known for his voiceover work as the jovial Sam the Snowman in the animated Christmas special “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” which included the song “A Holly Jolly Christmas.”On • June 18, 1923, the first Checker Cab rolls off the line at the Checker Cab Manufacturing Company in Kalamazoo, Mich. The company then employed some 700 people. The last Checker Cab rolled off the line in Kalamazoo in 1982.On • June 20, 1941, after a long and bitter struggle on the part of Henry Ford against cooperation with organized labor unions, Ford Motor Company signs its first contract with the United Automobile Workers of America and Congress of Industrial Organizations (UAW-CIO).On • June 16, 1965, Bob Dylan records “Like a Rolling Stone.” The sales staff at Columbia Records did not like the song due to its length, 6 minutes 34 seconds. Two radio DJs heard a bootlegged song and demanded copies. Sales got its last dig in by chopping “Like a Rolling Stone” in half and putting it on separate sides of 45s, but a re-spliced full version was what radio stations played. On • June 17, 1972, five men are arrested for breaking into the Democratic National Committee offices at the Watergate Hotel in Washington, D.C. Senate investigations eventually revealed that President Richard Nixon had been personally involved in the subsequent cover-up of the break-in.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Choosing to work with someone you once thought might have been disloyal is a courageous move. The logical next step is to talk things out so there’ll be no reason for raising suspicions again.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Take your time making a decision about a personal or work-related relationship. New facts are still coming in, and you’ll want to know the full story before you take a definitive step.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Expect to learn something new about an old problem. This could provide some insight into how the problem began, and why it still defies efforts to find a resolution. Good luck.CANCER (June 21 to July 22) An uneasy work-related relationship can be eased with compromises by both sides. The parties might consider putting the agreed-upon changes in writing in case of a future misunderstanding.LEO (July 23 to August 22) Oh, you lucky Felines: Your romantic aspects are in abso-lutely purrrfect form. Don’t be surprised at how especially attentive the ladies and gen-tlemen in your life are going to be this week.VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Look-ing to prove yourself in a difficult situation is laudable. But try paying more attention to ad-vice from experienced contacts. It could help you avoid time-wasting missteps.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A business decision seems easy enough to make based on what you know. But this week could bring new facts to light, and you might have to do some heavy rethinking. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Feeling sure about the steps you expect to take is great. But you may need to share a few dollops of that confidence with those who have some doubts about your plans.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A sense of well-being dominates much of the week. A slightly depressed mood could set in on the weekend. But being with family and friends helps shoo it away.CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You appear to be walking your life’s path like the sure-footed Goat you are. But someone might feel you could do better. Listen to the advice, but make up your own mind.AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) With positive signs growing stronger, Aquar-ians could find themselves facing choices that are each too good to turn down. Best advice: Go for the one you feel most comfort-able with.PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Some-one you know might need your comfort and wisdom during a particularly difficult period. Your encouraging words help restore self-confidence and rebuild strength.BORN THIS WEEK: Your kindness to all who need you is always appreciated and sets a fine example for others to follow.

Having vehicle insurance gives a feeling of security. After all, if something goes wrong, the insurance company will take care of things, right?Maybe.Understanding what isn’t covered in your policy is just as important as what is cov-ered -- or maybe more important if an ac-cident catches you unawares.Myth: Whatever dollar amount the state requires for bodily and property damage li-ability coverage is plenty. Not necessarily. It depends on your assets. If you have an accident that includes bodi-ly injury to others and you are sued, you could lose all your assets. It’s the same with property-damage liability. If you hit someone else’s vehicle, your insurer will take care of the costs, but only up to the limits of your policy. You might not be cov-ered for the complete expense if the other person owns an expensive vehicle.Opt for umbrella liability coverage for dam-age costs that run over the limits of your policy. If a liability case goes to court, ver-dicts of $1 million or more could be handed down against you. Buy liability insurance with a deductible that starts where your

regular policy stops.Myth: If your vehicle is totaled in an acci-dent, the insurance company will pay off. They’ll probably pay something, but the amount likely won’t be what you expect, and it might not even be enough to pay off what you still owe on the car. They’ll pay based on the cash value of the car, a wholesale amount.Opt for gap insurance to cover the differ-ence between what your insurer will pay for your totaled vehicle and what you still owe on it.Myth: If someone hits your car, the other guy’s insurance will pay for the damage. Maybe, if the other driver has insurance.Buy uninsured motorist coverage, in case another driver hits you and has no insur-ance. This insurance is a cheap but valu-able addition to your policy.Check the exclusions on your policy to be sure what it won’t cover. Look for “Acts of God” such as flooding or hail, accesso-ries you’ve added to the car such as an expensive stereo, coverage while driving someone else’s vehicle or someone is driv-ing yours, and break-ins where expensive items like cell phones or laptops are stolen from your vehicle.David Uffington regrets that he cannot person-ally answer reader questions, but will incor-porate them into his column whenever pos-sible. It was multi-talented Sir Francis Bacon • -- he was a statesman, lawyer, scientist, philosopher and author -- who made the following sage observation: “If a man will begin with certainties, he shall end in doubts; but if he will be content to begin with doubts, he shall end in certainties.”One of the most highly praised actress-• es of our time, Meryl Streep, holds the record for Academy Award nominations; she’s been awarded the Oscar twice, but has been nominated an impressive 16 times. The highest known life insurance payout • occurred in 1970, when the widow of a cattle rancher was awarded $18 million in benefits. Those who study such things say that • Italians drink, on average, 26 gallons of wine every year. It’s just common sense that people tend • to behave better when they’re being watched, but it may come as a surprise that it doesn’t seem to matter whether or not the watcher is real. Researchers made this discovery in an experiment conducted at the University of Newcas-tle in Australia. In a coffee lounge where paying for the beverage was optional, a picture of a pair of eyes was placed next to the price list at some times, and at other times a picture of flowers accom-panied the list. On days when the eyes were posted, more than three times as much money was donated than on days when the flowers were in the same spot.People magazine reportedly paid $6 mil-• lion for photos of Jennifer Lopez’s twin babies, Emme and Max.Between 1960 and 2006, the average • American’s production of solid waste -- including everything from paper packag-ing to lawn clippings -- increased by 150 percent to 4.5 pounds every day.

A broke blonde decides to ask God for help. “Dear Lord,” she prays, “if I don’t get some cash, I’m gonna lose everything. Please let me win the lottery.” Lottery night comes, but the blonde doesn’t win. She prays even harder, saying, “God, why have you forsaken me? My children are starv-ing. Please just let me win this once.” Sud-denly there is a blinding flash of light, and the blonde hears God speak. “Sweetheart, work with me on this,” he says. “Buy a tick-et.” A young man at a New Year’s party turns to his friend and asks for a cigarette. “I thought you made a New Year’s resolution to quit smoking,” his friend says. “I’m in the process of quitting,” the man says. “Right now, I am in the middle of phase one.” “What’s phase one?” “I’ve quit buying.” A mother’s youngest child was thrilled when her turn came to enter kindergar-ten. To make sure they had plenty of time to eat breakfast and get ready on the first day, she woke everybody up early. It was so early that it was still dark outside. She was dressing when her little daughter came into her room looking troubled. “ What’s wrong?” the mother asked, mustering as much cheerfulness as she could at that hour. “This is your big day!” The little girl blurted out, “You didn’t tell me I was going to night school.” One night, around 3 a.m., Larry hears a loud knocking at his door. Grumbling, he pulls on some pants and goes to answer it, and sees a small drunk man standing there. “Hey, pal, can you give me a push?” the drunk asks. “No!” Larry says. “Do you know what time it is?” He closes the door

in the drunk’s face, only to turn around and see his wife. “Now Larry, don’t you remem-ber the Golden Rule? Get out there and help that poor man,” she says. Grumbling louder, Larry heads out into the night, but he doesn’t see anyone. “Hey, you still out here?” he asks. “Yeah,” comes a voice out of the darkness. “You still need a push?” “Yeah!” Larry still can’t see anybody so he yells “Well, where are you?” “Over here on the swing!” A man was walking in the city, when he was accosted by a particularly dirty and shabby-looking bum who asked him for a couple of dollars for dinner. The man took out his wallet, extracted two dollars and asked, “If I gave you this money, will you take it and buy whiskey?” “No, I stopped drinking years ago,” the bum said. “Will you use it to gamble?” “I don’t gamble. I need everything I can get just to stay alive.” “Will you spend the money on greens fees at a golf course?” “Are you NUTS! I haven’t played golf in 20 years!” The man said, “Well, I’m not going to give you two dollars. Instead, I’m going to take you to my home for a terrific dinner cooked by my wife.” The bum was astounded. “Won’t your wife be furious with you for doing that? I know I’m dirty, and I probably smell pretty bad.” The man replied, “Hey, man, that’s OK! I just want her to see what a man looks like who’s given up drinking, gambling, and golf!” A woman comes home from the doctor and tells her husband the bad news that she has only 18 hours to live. “That’s ter-rible!!!” said her husband, “What would you like to do during your last hours ? I’ll try to make it as memorable as possible for you.” “Well,” she said, “First, I want to take a long romantic walk, then have a quiet dinner at my favorite restaurant and then go to bed with you and make passionate love all night long !” “Gee, Honey.” said her husband, “I don’t know about that ‘all night long’ stuff. After all, I’m gonna have to get up in the morning and you won’t.” The coed came running in tears to her father. “Dad, you gave me some terrible fi-nancial advice!” she cried. “I did? What was it?” asked the dad. “You told me to put my money in that big bank, and now that big bank is in trouble.” “What are you talking about? Surely there must be some mistake.” “I don’t think so,” she sniffed. “They just returned one of my checks with a note saying, ‘Insufficient Funds.’”

Make A Clean Sweep Of Food Storage Areas

(NAPS)—If you’re like most people, you’ve occasionally taken something out of the freezer and wondered, “What is this icy blob?” You may also have thought about whether the frozen meat you tossed in the back of the freezer is still safe or if you can eat outdated canned chili or slimy bologna. If you’ve had any of these items in your food storage areas —or even if you haven’t—it may be time for cleaning the food storage areas of your kitchen. In these challenging economic times, you don’t want to waste food, but if it’s not safe, you don’t want to chance getting a foodborne illness either.

Is Frozen Food Safe?Yes. Once food is frozen, bacteria can’t grow, so food continuously kept frozen is always safe. However, it may not look like something you’d want to eat. When cleaning out the freezer, have a “mystery meal” by thawing the unrecognizable packages. They will look like real food after thawing, so diners can take their pick, heat and eat.

Freezer burn?

It’s not a sign that food is dangerous—only that it has dried in spots. Merely cut off the freezer-burned areas of the meat and use the rest.

Do Refrigerated Foods Have A Shelf Life?

Yes again. Unlike their frozen counterparts, refrigerated foods will eventually spoil. After cleaning out the refrigerator, it’s helpful to use a felt-tip pen and mark the date you are adding new foods to the refrigerator. It is also helpful to identify and date new foods in the freezer. To see a food storage time chart, go to www.fsis.usda.gov and click on “Fact Sheets.” There, you will find Basics for Handling Food Safely.

Make A DateSome canned goods are dated by the manufacturer and some are not. A general rule is that low-acid canned goods, such as green beans, stew and soups, are good for five years after you purchase them, whereas acidic foods such as canned tomatoes, pineapple and mandarin oranges should be used within 18 to 24 months.Again, it’s always a good practice to date the cans before storing them in the pantry so you know for sure when they should be

used. For more food safety information about meat, poultry or egg products, call the USDA.Meat and Poultry Hotline at (888) MPHotline or (888) 674-6854; in English and Spanish, type a question into “Ask Karen” (www.AskKaren.gov); go to www.fsis.usda.gov; or go to befood safe.gov.

Don’t let food spoil. When you refrigerate or freeze leftovers, mark the date on the package with a felt-tip pen so you know how long you can store it.
