ALLIGATORSImagine the reaction when early Spanish ex-plorers first saw “big lizards” (El legarto) swim-ming in the swamps and other wetlands of the southern United States! means the film ends abruptly after the Battle at Helm’s Deep-- or about half-way through the saga. Also, Bakshi’s rotoscoping style of animation is a real embarrassment in places -- specifically in the rendering of the orcs. Basically what he did was film a bunch of guys in fright masks and robes and then draw the cartoon versions over what he filmed. The result was a cartoony ver-sion of a bunch of guys in frumpy robes and Halloween masks.I think the people who would be inter-ested in this version are those of us who saw the film when we were younger and will buy it just for the nostalgia factor; Tolkien completists who want to add the disc to their collections; or Bakshi fans. If you aren’t one of those people listed, you might want to give this one a pass.

“Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Se-ries” (Not Rated) -- All four seasons, 25 discs and about 16 tons worth of special features, including commentaries, delet-ed scenes, Webisodes, featurettes and more. There’s even a special boxed set that comes with a big-old Cylon action figure. Fans of SyFy’s reboot of the clas-sic 1970s sci-fi fantasy television show will gobble this up. Available on DVD and Blu-Ray.

PICKS OF THE WEEK“Eyes on The Prize: America’s Civil Rights Years 1954-1965” (Not Rated) -- Fans of this groundbreaking, six-hour PBS docu-mentary have been waiting for years for it to be released on home video at a reasonable price. This epic production chronicles the post-war struggle for civil rights by blending historical footage with interviews with many of the major movers and shakers of the struggle. “Eyes on the Prize” is an unflinch-ing look at one of the most turbulent eras in our country’s history, and one of the great-est PBS productions ever made.

“The Lord of the Rings: Remastered Deluxe Edition” (Rated PG) -- This isn’t the award-winning Peter Jackson production beloved by Tolkien fans around the world. No sir. This is the 1978 cult animated film by Ralph Bakshi, director of “Fritz the Cat,” “Wizards,” “Cool World” and “American Pop.” What makes this film notable is that it was the first attempt to bring “The Lord of the Rings” to the big screen, and it is more faithful to the books than Jackson’s was. That said, Bakshi’s production is a mixed bag. The project ran out of money before the entire saga could be finished, which

IT TAKES TWO by Bonnie St. ClairLaurel without Hardy? Bert without Ernie? Hall without Oates? They just wouldn’t have been the same. Join Tidbits as we share stories behind some famous “people pairs”

and how they managed to discover one another.• In the original story, Batman met the boy who would become Robin in 1940. Dick Grayson was an eight-year-old circus acrobat, the son of trapeze artists. When a gangster who’d been extorting money from the circus sabotaged the riggings, Dick’s parents fell to their deaths. Batman investi-gated the crime, and he became fond enough of the boy to become his legal guardian (as his alter ego, Bruce Wayne). He instructed the youngster in the ways of fighting crime

and dubbed him Robin, the Boy Wonder.• Cherilyn Sarkisian dropped out of school and moved to Hollywood with dreams of becoming an actress. At 17, she met Sonny Bono at Aldo’s Coffee Shop. Bono worked for music producer Phil Spector and was able to get Cher, as he called her, work as a background vocalist. A songwriter at heart, Sonny had peddled his tunes without much success. But when he and Cher became romantically involved, the pair recorded his tune “I Got You, Babe,” which hit number one on the pop chart and made stars of Sonny and Cher.

• One day in 1881, Dr. John Watson happened to rent a room at a lodging house at 221B Baker Street in London, England. His roommate was a mysterious chap named Sherlock Holmes. Holmes was quite secretive about what he did for a living, but eventually confessed that he was a private detective, which (at the time) was a rather rare profession. Fascinated by Holmes’ tales and the way he employed logical deduction to

solve cases, the two became not only friends but also coworkers and confidantes. • That levelheaded, sturdy housewife Blondie wasn’t so very domestic when she first appeared in the newspaper comics section some 70 years ago. Blondie Boopadoop was a carefree flapper back in 1930, when she met Dagwood Bumstead, the young play-boy son of a railroad tycoon. In fact, Dagwood’s millionaire father opposed his son’s re-lationship with Blondie, and threatened to cut off his financial support if they continued seeing one another. The elder Bumstead grudgingly gave his blessing to the marriage, but he still nixed his son’s inheritance, forcing Dagwood to become one of the working

class.• Clyde Barrow was born into extreme poverty in rural Texas. As he came of age, the Great Depression ravaged the nation, and the angry young man turned to burglary and robbery as a means of survival. One December evening in 1929, he was visiting a friend when he heard a clatter in the kitchen. “That’s Bonnie Parker,” the pal told him. “She’s making hot chocolate. Go say hello.” It was love at first sight; the pair chatted into the wee hours of the morning. The next day, Bonnie hit the road with Clyde and the pair

machine-gunned their way to infamy.• Daniel Wesson was born to a family in Worcester, Massachusetts. At 18, he was apprenticed to his brother’s shoe manufacturing company, but grew dissatisfied and joined up with another brother, Edwin, as a journeyman gunsmith. In 1852, Daniel met Horace Smith, a fellow gun enthusiast who’d learned about firearms while working at the

National Armory in nearby Springfield. They formed a partnership with the goal of marketing a lever action repeating pistol, and the

two became well known as Smith & Wesson.

SENIOR NEWS LINE by Matilda Charles

Don’t Fall for This Free LunchHave you seen the ads? They offer us a free lunch at a posh loca-tion while we attend a seminar on financial investing, with experts to advise us. Don’t be taken in by it. It could be the most expen-sive lunch you’ll ever have. The Securities and Exchange Commis-

sion and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority just released a report detailing the investment scams that are becoming rampant against seniors. While the study concentrated on Southern states, there’s no doubt this is happening

across the country. The scam works like this: When you think you’re going to an in-vestment education seminar that includes a free lunch at a nice place, you end up facing high-pressure sales tactics and misleading claims. You might be pushed to open new accounts, sign complicated docu-ments (without being given the opportunity to read them or take them to your attorney for review) or buy investment products that aren’t suitable for you (or that

might not even exist).Because we’re seniors and the top-ic is important to us, we’re prom-ised high returns on our life sav-ings with safe investments and excellent liquidity for a financially

secure retirement. Here are two ways to educate your-

self against investment fraud:¥ Go to AARP (www.aarp.org) and look at its online videos. Search for investment fraud and “The Lure of Money.” While you’re there, take the Investment Fraud IQ test

to see how you score.¥ Go to www.sec.gov and search for “free lunch report” for the whole 46-page study. It includes examples of the ads that are used in these scam free-lunch invest-ment seminars. If you have ques-

tions, call the SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy at 800-SEC-0330.

Here’s a scary thought: Research shows that 78 percent of us have received one of these free-lunch invitations.

ALLIGATORS (continued):

• Louisiana has an alligator hunting season every September that nets 28,000-35,000 alligators! Also, in 1986, an alliga-tor ranching program was started. With the two programs, alligators create anestimated $20,000,000 revenue in the state.• Alligator meat is tasty, alligator “bites” are offered at numerous restaurants in South Louisiana. Just don’t dwell on the alligator’s diet of rats, snakes, raccoons and more. Yummy!• The long snouts of alligators are home to between 74 and 80 teeth. When their teeth wear down, new ones grow. Al-ligators can go through 2,000 to 3,000 teeth in a lifetime. No need for dentures for those big guys and gals!• The Louisiana Land and Explora-tion Company (LL&E) once was the largest private owner of coastal wetlands in the U.S. (company no longer exists). LL&E was involved in an alligator breeding project in the 1980s to help with alligator recovery and removal from the endangered species list. In 1987, as LL&E was picking up hatchlings to take to a controlled breeding pond, they came across 18 white alligators hatched in one nest! Now, this was an amazing find. • The white alligator hatchlings were taken to the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans. Without natural skin color for camouflage the babies would not have survived in the wild. Described as looking like white chocolate, they would have been tasty morsels plucked away by big birds!• Most people think the white alliga-tors are albinos, but they are not. They are leucistic, which means they have a genetic mutation that causes white skin and blue eyes. Albinos have reddish eyes and lack the melanin pigment for skin coloration. • There are only two countries that are native homes to alligators, China and the U.S. Chinese alligators are endangered and there are actually more in zoos than the number believed to be in the wild. They are found along the Yangtze River. Smaller than their American relatives, they only grow to an average length of five feet (1.5 m).

Everybody needs a hobby, a pastime they enjoy, something to collect. Tidbits looks at both the common and unusual choices that people make.

• Those who collect comic books are called pannapictagraphists. Until recently, actor Nicolas Cage was an avid collector, but he auctioned off his collection for over $1.6 million. His collection included the first copy of Superman’s appearance, which sold for $86,250, and the Detective Comic which introduced Batman’s sidekick Robin , which brought in $132,250. Other celebrity collectors include Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Affleck. Affleck, fond of Daredevil comics since childhood, landed the title role in the 2003 film Daredevil.

• Philatelists enjoy studying and collecting stamps. An avid philatelist might know that the first postage stamp was called a Penny Black, and was issued in Great Britain in 1840, featuring the image of Queen Victoria. Beatle John Lennon began collecting stamps as a young boy. Visitors to the National Postal Museum at the Smithsonian Institute can view his 145-page album containing more than 550 stamps, with his signature on the flyleaf.

• Brandophilists, those who collect cigar bands, are pretty much a dying breed. Although the hobby was very popular in the early 1900s, it began to die out by the 1930s. The quality of cigar bands declined after the 1920s, since they were produced by a less expensive printing process. Except for a very few exceptions, a cigar band collection isn’t worth very much.

• Brent Dixon of Valdosta, Georgia is an avid copoclephilist. He started collecting key chains in 2001 and has now amassed close to 41,500.

• From wooden to bisque, from Barbie to Madame Alexander, a plangonologist knows the score. This term refers to one who collects dolls.

•Nick Vermeulen has a rather unusualhobby, thatofcollectingairlinesicknessbags. This Dutch gentleman has beenaccumulating barf bags since 1970, andhis stockpile now approaches the 5,500mark, with bags from more than 1,060differentairlines.

Egg-Sicles Are Perfect for Easter

The concept for Earth Day was started by U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin in 1970. Sen. Nelson wanted to promote ecology and respect for life on the planet. He also was keenly aware of the growing problems of pollution in our air, water and soil. Earth Day aims to inspire awareness of and appreciation for the earth’s environment. It is currently observed in more than 140 countries around the world.Nothing celebrates the goodness of the earth like a great vegetarian recipe. My vegetarian version of Spaghetti Bolognese incorporates lots of vegetables and a spicy, vegetarian product called Soyrizo. Soyrizo is a meat substitute made with 100 percent soybeans and canola oil. It is seasoned with the same spices used to make the traditional, soft, Mexican pork chorizo.

Traditional Bolognese uses bacon or pancetta and ground beef, ground pork or veal.I love combining Soyrizo with tomato sauce to enhance the flavor of the recipe. Soyrizo is also delicious in soft tacos,

with sauce. Add reserved pasta water, a little at a time, to thin out sauce as needed. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Makes 8 servings.*NOTE: If you don’t know how to adjust the temperature on your microwave oven, use the defrost setting and cook the sauce for 10 minutes.

Easter Baskets and Pets Don’t Mix

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Can you remind your readers that chocolate is an absolute no-no for pets? I was at a friend’s house and saw that the Easter baskets the kids had unwrapped were sitting out on the kitchen table, candies strewn everywhere. Their curi-ous terrier, “Rascal,” kept sneaking onto a chair to sniff around the goodies. I was so worried for him, afraid he would eat the choc-olate eggs or ingest the foil wrappers. Please tell your readers to put away the candy in a place that’s hard for pets to reach. -- Leah H., Philadelphia

DEAR LEAH: You said it best, and I thank you! In the excitement of a holiday, it’s easy to leave a lot of things lying around where pets can get at them, including chocolate and other dangerous items. But pets are an important responsibility. Choco-late is poisonous to dogs, and dogs also risk ingesting other dangerous things -- like plas-tic Easter eggs that break into shards when chewed. Cats may chew on items that interest them, like the rustling “grass” that lines baskets.Be sure to pick up wrapping paper, tinsel or plastic grass, and fallen candies right away. Better yet, put pets in a separate area while the unwrapping is going on, and let them in after everything is cleaned up.If, after a celebration, your pet seems lethargic, won’t eat, displays any sign of pain or distress, or is vomiting, take it to the veterinarian right away.
