Dave Armstrong At its meeting held on Tuesday 7 th July, the chairman made the following statement before the meeting started. “As Chair of Ticknall Parish Council I am sad to report the passing of Dave Armstrong. Not only is Dave a close and personal friend of mine, he also did so much for this village and our Council. He maintained the Pavilion for years, painted taps, railings and put up Poppies all with his usual good humour and style. Dave loved this village and was happy to be a big part of it. His untimely passing will be mourned by many. He will be greatly missed by all of us.” Dave with the cup he won for his prize onions. In days gone by the Parish Council employed a Parish Lengthsman to carry out minor works. A lengthsman is no longer employed, but the Parish Council hires contractors to do the work and Dave was one of these. Dave had done paid work for the Parish Council, and alongside his maintenance of the pavilion, village railings and the Ticknall Pillar Fountains, known locally as the Ticknall Taps, he maintained seats, notice boards and he recently cleaned out and restored the door of the village Roundhouse, known locally as the Lock-up. He also did unpaid work for the Parish Council, which he did free of charge for the benefit of his community. Dave did work for many of the villagers and you would often see him up a ladder, painting window frames, up on a roof replacing tiles, repairing leaks and guttering. or the longest runner bean at the yearly Ticknall Produce Show. He was Ticknall Village’s representative on the Ticknall Liaison Committee with Calke Park, and he loved crosswords. A minute’s silence was observed, before Ticknall Cricket Club’s first match of the season, for Dave who was the club’s Vice President. He played for the club on occasion, and was a regular supporter of the club. Dave was a good friend to the Parish Council, a good friend to his community, and It is an indication how well known and well liked that Dave was in Ticknall, that many people lined High Street, to watch and applaud in his honour on the day of his funeral. The Parish Council sends condolences to Ros, and the family and friends of Dave. _____________ This printed newsletter will be the last one that will be delivered by hand by the Parish Council. In days gone by the Parish Council employed a Parish

Lengthsman to carry out minor works.

He helped to organise the Christmas Quiz which was enjoyed by everyone. Dave was a keen gardener, who often won cups for his prize onions or the longest runner bean at the yearly Ticknall Produce Show.

Scoff & Shop At the start of the pandemic in March Colin Potter and his daughter Rebecca have changed the style of the business in order to help the village through the crisis. They have increased the range of groceries stocked, bought in supplies as requested and delivered to anyone in the village and surrounding areas. We owe them an immense debt of gratitude for their efforts in caring for the village with such good humour and disregard for their own safety.

Colin and Rebecca

It is their intention to carry on increasing the range of groceries and provisions but they need our support. It is well known that any village community benefits greatly from having a local shop. Please support our shop where you can, its times like this that we realise how vital it is. You can contact the shop on 865023.

The Staff of Life Jayne Walls and John Pankhurst are the new managers of The Staff of Life. They took over through the lockdown period and have been very busy getting the pub ready for opening and making it safe for their staff and customers. They are looking forward to being part of the community and enjoying any activities or events that will be planned in the future. If there is anyway way Jayne or John can help, either as themselves or with the pub, please do not hesitate to contact them on 862479.

Ticknall Macmillan Coffee Morning - September 24 at the Staff of Life. Further details to follow. The Ticknall team behind the September Macmillan bake sale and coffee morning (Mary, Ros, Christina, Maggie and Gill) are joined this year by the new manager at the Staff of Life, Jayne Walls. So, we can ensure everyone's safety with social distancing this year the new managers at the Staff of Life have offered to host the coffee morning. The cakes will be tasty and home-made by us all, and the chat and the company will be as warm and welcoming as ever. Let's try and equal last year's fantastic Ticknall fundraising by the coffee morning and other initiatives. More to follow!

Ticknall Village Hall 2020 Update The year started with the successful transfer of the village hall and all its assets to Ticknall Village Hall CIO which stands for Charitable Incorporated Organisation which now gives us a far more modern and appropriate governance structure. The Trustees of Ticknall Village Hall CIO are: Andy Rogers, Chair; Paul Colleyshaw, Treasurer; Mary Magson; Rob Mallett and David Johnson. The first AGM of Ticknall Village Hall CIO will be held later this year; subject to social distancing guidelines at the time. In the meantime, plans are now in place for the gradual re-opening of the hall over the next few months following a long period of closure during the pandemic. These reopening plans include how best to utilise the hall for the benefit of the local community such as a village hall drop-in centre for a chat and a coffee. However, the hall also needs your support to ensure it is maintained and continually improved – so please support the Village Hall Lottery which provides funds to assist us in these long term aims.

St. George’s Church, Ticknall The Revd Steve Short, Rector, reports: - “As much as these weeks in lockdown have been challenging for so many in a variety of different ways, it has been a real privilege to see the many ways that communities have pulled together. People looking out for one another, delivering food or making a phone call to someone isolated and alone. Some have even unearthed the previously unknown talent of hairdressing! Being follically challenged, this isn’t something that I have needed so much but I appreciate the desperation some must have been feeling. It is my fervent hope and prayer that this care and concern will continue even as we take our cautious steps out of lockdown. Moving forward, to a lesser or greater degree, there are bound to be times when we feel anxious, emotional or fragile. Brad Meltzer, the New York-based author writes: “Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always. At St George’s Church, as with others in our community, we are here to serve and to listen. Although the pandemic has disrupted our corporate worshipping life, we are still part of the church family locally and internationally. It is also my hope that perhaps towards the end of August or early September, we may be enabled to reopen safely for Sunday services to which all are very welcome. These services may look and sound a little different to ‘normal’ for a while but the warm welcome remains. Look out for further updates! Every blessing, Steve” Ticknall, Derbyshire is now on Nextdoor Neighbourhood hub for trusted connections and the exchange of helpful information, goods and services. On our new neighbourhood site and app, we can share recommendations, plan neighbourhood events, discuss safety, lost and found, post things for sale and much more. Many neighbours in our village already use the Nextdoor app. Help us build a better neighbourhood join on http://nextdoor.co.uk Or search on Google Play/App Store for the Nextdoor app.

Ticknall Cricket Club Ticknall Cricket Club’s1st team played its first match of the season on Saturday 11th July against Swarkestone. The season was supposed to have started in April, but due to Covid-19 the club was unable to play, so this match has been a long time coming. The weather was perfect.

Overhanging foliage Whilst you are all doing lots of gardening these days, weather permitting, would you please remember the foliage on the outside of your properties, which hangs over the pavements. This is more crucial at the moment because people are walking the pavements and also trying to social distance as well. So, if we could ask you to cut back overhanging plants, hedges or trees, that would be very helpful. Thank you. Freighter Service South Derbyshire District Council will be providing a freighter to take unwanted items on Saturday, 10th October between 7.30 to 11.00 am. There will be restrictions on some items.
