Reading from the original charter and having several charter members present solidified our reason for being a member of TIAHA. In today’s world where our children are more interested in so many outside the home activities the value of our heritage becomes lost. Being a member of TIAHA not only means to keep our heritage alive, but also to teach our children and grand children what it means to be of Italian descent. Sometimes we concentrate on looking outward i.e. International Festival, St. Rafael’s, we forget to look inward to our families. Our social director Frank Ferraro has done an excellent job in planning activities. Please read the calendar and be prepared to sign up. Remember, for our club to be successful we must join together and be part of each activity. I am sad to report the Race day activity has been cancelled due to lack of interest. If anyone has an idea on how to improve participation please let me know. I have printed several hundred brochures and have brochure holders. I will pass them out at the June meeting so you may ask businesses to place them on their counters. A great big thank you for Nancy Difede who will be updating our web page. Finally. June is also “Bring A new Member” to the meeting month. Last month two new members were approved and we look forward to more this month. Submitted, Bob Vetrano June 2007 Page 1 of 18

Good Afternoon Everyone, I'm sending this to give you an update on brother Victor Parlanti's condition. Victor's health continues to decline. However, the doctors are amazed at how Victor is fighting to hang onto life. Victor is a fighter; but he's slowly losing the fight. Victor's weight is down to 82 pounds, he's bed ridden and doesn't have the strength to feed himself. He is in some pain now. Please say a prayer for Victor that he doesn't suffer. * He has a new mailing address if anyone should wish to send him a card. However, as I said in a previous email, if you plan to send a card, I recommend you do it quickly. * Victor Parlanti Cambridge Place, Room 11, West Wing 2020 Cambridge Drive Lexington, Kentucky 40504 Thank you, Jim Frederici

Religion in Italy

Roman Catholicism is the major religion — 85% of native-born citizens are nominally Catholic — there are mature Protestant and Jewish communities and a growing Muslim immigrant community. All religious faiths are provided equal freedom before the law by the constitution. Before the arrival of Christianity in the 1st century A.D. the country was mostly pagan and worshiped the Roman gods. Eventually Christianity replaced paganism and became the majority religion of the Roman Empire and Italy. The Pope of the Roman Catholic Faith resides within Rome in what is now known as Vatican City. Anglicanism also exists in Italy and the Anglican Churches and Roman Catholic Churches in Italy have a good relationship; some Catholic Churches even allow Anglicans to use their churches for worship.

Islam was almost entirely absent in Italy from the time of that country's unification in 1861 until the 1970s, when the first few North African immigrants began arriving. These North Africans, mostly of Berber or Arab origin, came mainly from heavily Islamic Morocco, though they have been followed in more recent years by Tunisians, Albanians and to a lesser extent, Libyans, Egyptians, Pakistanis, Middle Eastern Arabs and Kurds. Some estimate the number of Italian converts to be around 10,000.

At the church's husband's marriage seminar, the priest asked Luigi, on his upcoming 50th wedding anniversary, to take a few minutes and share some insight into how he managed to stay married to the same woman all these years. Luigi replied to the audience "Well, I'v-a tried to treat-a her well, spend-a the money on her, but-a, da best-a is-a dat I took her to Italy for the 20th-a anniversary! The Priest immediately commented, "Luigi, you are an amazing inspiration to all the husbands here! Please tell the audience what you are planning for your wife for your 50th anniversary..." Luigi proudly replied, "I'm-a gonna go and-a get her."

Cinema of Italy

The history of Italian cinema began a few months after the Lumière brothers had discovered it. The first film was a few seconds long and was Pope Leo XIII giving a blessing to the camera. The Industry was born between 1903 and 1908 with three companies: the Roman Cines, the Ambrosio of Turin and the Itala Film. Other companies would soon have followed in Milan and in Naples. In a short time these first companies reached a fair producing quality and films were soon sold outside Italy too. The cinema was later used by Mussolini as a form of propaganda during World War II.

After the war, Italian film was widely recognised and exported until an artistic decline around 1980. World-famous Italian film directors from this period include Vittorio De Sica, Federico Fellini, Sergio Leone, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Michelangelo Antonioni and Dario Argento. Movies include world cinema treasures such as La Dolce Vita, Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo and Ladri di biciclette.

Later, the Italian scene has received only occasional international attention, with movies like La vita è bella directed by Roberto Benigni and Il Postino directed by Massimo Troisi.

Italian theatre can be traced back into the Roman which was heavily influenced by the Greek tradition, and, as with many other literary genres, Roman dramatists tended to adapt and translate from the Greek. For example, Seneca's Phaedra was based on that of Euripides, and many of the comedies of Plautus were direct translations of works by Menander. During the 16th century and on into the 18th century Commedia dell'arte was a form of improvisational theatre , although it is still performed today. Travelling teams of players would set up an outdoor stage and provide amusement in the form of juggling, acrobatics, and, more typically, humorous plays based on a repertoire of established characters with a rough storyline, called Canovaccio.

Italian Family Values

• The family is the centre of the social structure and provides a stabilizing influence for its members. • In the north, generally only the nuclear family lives together; while in the south, the extended family often resides together in one house. • The family provides both emotional and financial support to its members.

Italian Style

• Appearances matter in Italy. • The way you dress can indicate your social status, your family's background, and your education level. • First impressions are lasting impressions in Italy. • The concept of 'bella figura' or good image is important to Italians. • They unconsciously assess another person's age and social standing in the first few seconds of meeting them, often before any words are exchanged. • Clothes are important to Italians. • They are extremely fashion conscious and judge people on their appearance. • You will be judged on your clothes, shoes, accessories and the way you carry yourself. • Bella figura is more than dressing well. It extends to the aura your project too – i.e. confidence, style, demeanour

On my first day working at the gas station, I watched a senior co-worker measure the level of gasoline in the underground tanks by lowering a giant measuring stick down into them. "What would happen if I threw a lit match into the hole"? I joked. "It would go out," he replied very matter of factly. "Really"? I asked, surprised to hear that. "Is there a lack of oxygen down there or some safety device that would extinguish it before the fumes ignited"? "No," my co-worker continued. "The force from the explosion would blow out the match." ____________________________________________________________________________________ The teenager lost a contact lens while playing basketball in his driveway. After a fruitless search, he told his mother the lens was no where to be found. Undaunted, she went outside and in a few minutes returned with the lens in her hand. "How did you manage to find it, Mom"? the teenager asked. "We weren't looking for the same thing," she replied. "You were looking for a small piece of plastic. I was looking for $150." Thank you Bob Cenfetelli for contributing the above to the newsletter.

Italian Proverbs about Marriage

"Ne di Venere Ne di Marte non si sposa ne si parte!" Neither marry nor depart on the day of Venus or of Mars!

"Sposa bagnata, sposa fortunata" A wet bride is a lucky bride (referring to rain on the wedding day)

"La buona moglie fa il buon marito" A good wife makes a good husband. "La moglie e' la chiave di casa" The wife is the key of the house. "Tra moglie e marito ... non mettere il dito." Don't put a finger between wife and husband. "Moglie e buoi ...dei paesi tuoi." Wife and bull ...from your home-town. "La prima e' Matrimonio, la seconda comagnia, la terza un'eresia." The first wife is marriage, the second company, the third heresy. "Meglio il marito senz'amore, che con gelosia." Better to have a husband without love than with jealousy. "Chi ha moglie ha doglie" Who has a wife has strife. "Chi non ha moglie non ha padrone." Who has no wife has no master. "Casa senza fimmina ‘mpuvirisci" (Sicillian proverb) A house without a woman is poor "Matrimoni e viscuvati, di lu celu su mannati" (Sicillian proverb) Weddings and bishops are heaven sent
