THYROID•Control metabolism .

•One of the largest endocrine system in our body.•Located : Front of the neck the trachea. •Shape : Small butterfly shaped gland with two lobes.

•It’s contain of 3 type of hormones.i. T3 ( Triiodothyronine )ii. T4 ( Thyroxin ) iii.Calcitonin.

IMPORTANT• They would be lacking the supply

of energy you would eventually DIE (if <NO> thyroid and hormone replacement)

• Thyroidectomy (removal of the thyroid gland), there are hormone replacement therapies.

FUNCTION• Control metabolism.

Metabolism is the rate at which all the chemistry of the body works. • Control growth in early life.• Controls how quickly the body uses energy, makes proteins,• Controls how sensitive the

body should be to other hormones.

HORMONE(CONT’)

• The thyroid gland is controlled by thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)

• Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) produced by the hypothalamus

• The T3 and T4 are also known as THYROID HORMONES.

>T3 - Triiodothyronine>T4 – Thyroxin

HORMONE( CONT’)

• Calcitonin - Produced by para follicular  " C" cells a role in calcium homeostasis.

• Calcitonin – controlling blood calcium levels to prevent the the hypercalcemia (too much calcium in the blood).

• The hormones controlled by anterior pituitary by the elaboration of thyrotropin.

HORMONE( CONT’)

T3 and T4 affect most cells of the body by:

• Increasing the basal metabolic rate and heat production.

• Regulating metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats

• T3 and T4 are synthesized utilizing both iodine and tyrosine.

DEFINITIONHyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) is a condition in which your thyroid gland produces too much of the hormone thyroxine. Hyperthyroidism can significantly accelerate your body's metabolism, causing sudden weight loss, a rapid or irregular heartbeat, sweating, and nervousness or irritability.

HYPERTHYROIDISM

HYPOTHYROIDISMDEFINITIONHypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) is a condition in which your thyroid gland doesn't produce enough of certain important hormones. It seldom causes symptoms in the early stages, but, over time, untreated hypothyroidism can cause a number of health problems, such as obesity, joint pain, infertility and heart disease.

CONCLUSION•Located : Front of the neck the trachea.

•Shape : Small butterfly shaped gland with two lobes.

•Supply of energy required.

•It’s contain of 3 type of hormones.i. T3 ( Triiodothyronine )ii. T4 ( Thyroxin ) iii. Calcitonin.

•The hormones secreted by thyroid gland are controlled by anterior pituitary by the elaboration of thyrotropin.

ANY

QUESTIONS ?

Page 13: Thyroid

we QUESTION, you ANSWER !1)Where is the location for the thyroid

?•Found in the neck, inferior to the thyroid cartilage(ADAM’s apple )

2)Will we die if we are without thyroid ? Why ?•YES ! Because thyroid is one of the important system in our body. It's controls the metabolism of our entire body and every cell.

3)T3 & T4 are known's as thyroid hormones. What’s the affect of T3 & T4 for our body.•Increasing the basal metabolic rate and heat production.•Regulate metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats.
