14 "I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

The Abuse of Luke 18:13 Corrected
Parable to “some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and despised others” (v.9)
The point of the prayer is recognition of the need of forgiveness - not how alien sinner is to be saved

The Abuse of Luke 18:13 Corrected
The tax collector was under the Law of Moses
Already in a covenant relationship with God (1Jo.1:7,9)
Don’t have the totality of his obedience recorded (Le.4:27,28,35)
We are not under the same law (Co.2:14)

John 1:1211 He came to His own, and His own did not
receive Him.

13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Calling On The Name Of The Lord
Romans 6:11-13
11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts.
13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.

Romans 10:13-16• 13 For "whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall
be saved."• 14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have
not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?
• 15 And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!"
• 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed our report?"

Revealed in Paul’s ConversionSaw a vision (Ac.9:3,12)Heard the Lord speak directly to him (v.4)Spoke directly to the Lord (vv.5-6)Fasted for three days (v.9)Prayed for three days (v.11)
He still was not saved! (v.6)“Arise and be baptized, and wash away your
sins, calling on the name of the Lord” (Ac.22:16)
Brett W. Hogland 89
Calling On The Name Of The Lord
Revealed in Peter’s Application (Acts 2)
Peter revealed God’s promise - “that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved” (v.21)
The hearers expressed faith by their question(v.37) “What shall we do?”
Peter did not tell them to accept Jesus into their heart
Peter did not tell them to pray for salvation
Peter told them to repent and “be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins”
Brett W. Hogland 90
Calling On The Name Of The Lord
Clearly Revealed in (1Pe.3:21) “baptism (… the answer of a good conscience toward God),
(“answer” = eperoteema [eperoteema] )
Thayer: an inquiry, a question: 2. A demand. 3. …signification of earnest
seeking, i. e. a craving, an intense desire.
Vines: …is not, as in the KJV, an “answer”. It was used by the Greeks in a
legal sense, as a “demand or appeal.” Baptism is therefore the ground of an “appeal” by a good conscience against wrong doing.
Baptism = an appeal (calling on) toward the authority of God (the name of the Lord) for the forgiveness of sins
Brett W. Hogland 91
Baptism in the name of the Lord is:
The baptism authorized by Jesus (Mt.28:18-20)
An “appeal” by way of faithful obedience (Mk.16:16) (Ac.2:38) (Ac.10:48)
An act of faith in the working of God - not the
working of man (Co.2:12)
Based upon faith in the resurrection (Co.2:12)
(1Pe.3:21) (Ro.6:4-5) (Ro.10:9)
Calling upon the name of the Lord (Ac.22:16)
Calling On The Name Of The Lord
Brett W. Hogland 92
If you… Prayed the sinners prayer to be saved (??)Accepted Jesus into your heart to be saved (??)Believed that you were saved after believing and praying (??)
Then you… Were not calling on the name of the Lord for forgiveness when
you were baptized (Ps.145:18) (Ac.22:16)Were calling on men to see “an outward sign of an inward
grace”in you (Mt.15:9,13)Did not have faith in the working of God to raise you from
spiritual death in baptism (Co.2:12) (Ro.6:4-5)
Need to “arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord”!!
