these designs to be translated into prototype form.

Outfitted at Ferretti group’s Cat-tolica shipyard near Rimini, and launched in August 2016, the craft offers a range of more than 800km and is capable of achieving sustained speeds in excess of 50 knots. During a week of initial sea trials, during which time the vessel covered 1,750km, the FSD195 demonstrated excellent seakeeping characteristics despite severe weather and sea conditions.

For NAVDEX 2017, the FSD195 dem-onstrator has an eye-catching splinter camouflage scheme, and has been equipped with a weapon/sensor fit provided by Leonardo. This includes a Hitrole 12.7mm remotely controlled

gun mounted forward, and a Janus electro-optical surveillance and fire control system. FSD has also looked at a more offensive role fit, which could include a pair of MBDA Marte Mk 2 anti-ship missiles on the stern, and a Rheinmetall armouring kit on the boundaries of the operating area.

The FSD195 has also been equipped with an innovative dual-band satellite telecommunications system provided by Skytech.

To further build its presence in the region, Ferretti Group has signed an agreement with UAE-based Siham Al Khaleej Technology (SAKT). The tie-up with SAKT is intended to help boost FSD’s penetration of the security and defence sector in the Gulf.

Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB) and Lockheed Martin have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to co-operate on the provi-sion of sustainment services to the UAE’s military maritime assets.

T h e M o U w a s s i g n e d between Dr Khaled Al Mazrouei, chief executive of ADSB, and Joe North, vice president of Littoral Ship and Systems at Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems, on the sidelines of NAVDEX 2017.

The agreement brings together Lockheed Martin, a worldwide leader in naval combat systems, ship integration and global sustainment,

and ADSB, the Gulf Co-operation Council’s (GCC) leading ship builder, repair and through-life maintenance specialists, to offer maintenance, repair and overhaul services.

According to Dr Al Mazrouei, the MoU is intended to strengthen the service offering the two companies can provide to the UAE Navy.

“ADSB is uniquely positioned as

the only shipyard in the GCC that can build, refit, repair and upgrade complex naval vessels,” he said. “By collaborating with Lockheed Mar-tin, we will be able to expand our current commitment to the UAE military.”

North commented: “This MoU brings together Lockheed Martin’s and ADSB’s significant experience and expertise for the defence and commercial maritime market. The agreement creates excellent synergy for offering maritime sus-tainment solutions to advance the UAE Navy in the areas of hull and combat systems mainte-nance, modernisation and training requirements.”

Pakistan MSA vessel The Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) patrol craft PMSS Hingol is making its debut at

NAVDEX 2017. Hingol and sister ves-sel PMSS Basol were commissioned in December 2016 in Guangzhou,

China. The two new ships are the result of an agreement reached by China Shipbuilding Trading Com-

pany (CSTC) and Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works (KSEW) in 2016 for the construction of six vessels for the PMSA, with CSTC building four vessels and KSEW two.

Hingol is fitted with a NORINCO HJ-17 30mm remotely operated stabilised weapon mounting on its foredeck. The HJ-17 incorpo-rates an independently stabilised electro-optical director (EOD). As well as fire control, the separate EOD enables surveillance and target tracking without slaving the gun to the target.

This year Pakistan will begin receiv-ing the first of 12 Bell AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters that it has ordered. When delivered, they will be the first export use of the type, which is the latest iteration of Bell’s iconic gunship helicopter. The AH-1 concept has come a long way since its creation as the HueyCobra in the 1960s, gaining a second engine and a four-bladed rotor along the way, while the mission equipment now represents the state-of-the-art in attack helicopter systems.

The Viper’s principal targeting sys-tem is the Lockheed Martin AAQ-30 Target Sight System, an electro-opti-cal turret mounted in the helicopter’s nose. The two- person crew employ the Thales TopOwl helmet-mounted display, while the Viper is pro-tected by systems such as the AAR-47 missile approach warning

system, APR-39C(V)2 radar warning receiver and ALE-47 countermeas-ures dispensing system. Armament comprises a chin-mounted M197 three-barrelled 20mm cannon turret, rocket pods and precision-guided weapons such as Hellfire missiles and APKWS laser-guided rockets. The stub wings have a tip-mounted rail for an air-to-air missile such as the AIM-9 Sidewinder.

Along with the Bell UH-1Y Venom with which it shares major systems and components, the Viper was selected to equip the light heli-copter attack squadrons of the US Marine Corps as a successor to the AH-1W. Pakistan became the first export customer when it ordered three in August 2015, adding nine more in April 2016. A total of 15 was requested in the notification to US Congress, approved in April 2015.

NorthStar Aviation is now work-ing on an MRH (Mult i -Role Helicopter) version of the Bell 429, having already undertaken a suc-cessful modification programme for the single-engined Bell 407GXP. The resulting 407MRH has been acquired by the UAE Armed Forces, and an example wearing Joint Aviation Command markings is on display on NorthStar’s exhibit (Stand 03-C34). The UAE’s order covered 30 aircraft converted to full MRH specification, plus 15 further 407s with partial modifications for opera-tion by the Horizon Flight Academy at Al Ain.

NorthStar’s MRH conversion, con-ducted with the support of the OEM (Bell), adds a full military mission systems package, including Falcon-View moving map with mission planning capability. Lightweight cockpit armour is installed, while the cockpit itself has been redesigned. The 407MRH has a FLIR Systems Star SAFIRE 260-HLD electro-optic turret, and an integrated weapons management system supports the firing of a range of weapons, including AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, laser-guided rockets and podded gun systems. Alternative systems can be integrated to meet specific customer requirements.

While the 407MRH itself has gen-erated significant interest, notably in the Middle East and Africa region, potential customers have expressed a desire for a twin-engined heli-copter offering similar mission capabilities. To that end, NorthStar has studied a number of candidates before settling on the Bell Model 429 for its next project.

PSATRI (Prince Sultan Advanced Tech. Research Institute) from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is display-ing its Skyguard UAV at IDEX as part of the Military Industries Corpora-tion display (Stand 12-D20). The vehicle has autonomous take-off and landing capability, but can also be controlled manually from a sophisticated ground control sta-tion (GCS).

With a wingspan of 7.5m, the Skyguard can fly for up to 12 hours at altitudes of 18,000ft on the power of a two-stroke engine. The vehicle has a payload capacity of 50kg, and is shown at IDEX with an L-3 Wescam MX-10 electro-optical turret in the nose. An alternative payload is the larger MX-15 turret, which would be carried under the belly. The Skyguard is fitted with a datalink that can receive commands

and transmit imagery back to the GCS at distances of up to 200km.

PSATRI was established in Riyadh by King Saud University and the Royal Saudi Air Force to perform advanced research on defence and security technologies. Skyguard and its GCS have been developed by PSATRI’s Autonomous Vehicles Laboratory, which also constructed the prototype. Flight trials began successfully last year and the system is now in the qualification phase.

Initially the Skyguard is intended for a range of civilian missions, including security duties, but the type has the potential to be devel-oped further for military roles. As PSATRI is a research institute, it does not have mass production capabili-ties, and the programme would be handed over to another entity if production goes ahead.

Lockheed Martin’s C-130 Hercules is one of the most widely recognised shapes in the air. In production since 1998, the latest major production version is the C-130J Super Hercules, of which more than 360 have been

delivered to 15 nations. The global fleet has sur-

passed 1.5 million flight hours. France is soon set to join the C-130J club when it receives its two C-130J-30 transports and two KC-130Js, the latter featuring additional tanker capability.

Versatility has been the hallmark of the Hercules since its service entry in the mid-1950s, and the C-130J has mirrored the variety of roles under-taken by the earlier generations of Hercules. In addition to the C-130J and stretched-fuselage C-130J-30 transports, Lockheed Martin has

produced the EC-130J electronic warfare platform, the HC-130J for search and rescue, the KC-130J tanker/transport, the MC-130J for special forces support and the WC-130J meteorological reconnais-sance platform.

There is also a civilian version, the LM-100J, that continues the tradi-tion of the first-generation L-100 Hercules in the civilian freighter market. Lockheed Martin rolled out the first LM-100J on 9 February, the initial aircraft from a batch of five for the undisclosed launch customer.

In the Middle East and North Africa region, the C-130J is operated in its transport form by Iraq, Oman (Royal Flight and air force), Qatar and Tuni-sia. Kuwait has a fleet of KC-130Js that not only perform transport missions but also provide tanker support for the air force’s F/A-18 Hornet fighters. Saudi Arabia has also received a pair of KC-130Js, and may order more of the Super Hercules – US Congres-sional approval has been received for it to receive up to 25.

Here in the UAE, Lockheed Martin supports the air force’s legacy Hercu-les fleet of three C-130Hs and three L-100s, plus three L-100s of the Dubai Air Wing, through the AMMROC joint venture established by Mubadala with Lockheed Martin and its subsidiary, Sikorsky. AMMROC has recently undertaken a major avionics overhaul of the UAE’s fleet.

Orbital ATK (Stand 03-A07) is dis-playing its Palletized Weapon System (PaWS), which can rapidly turn most medium-/heavy-lift transport aircraft types into highly accurate gunships.

PaWS brings together sensors, communications and weapons into a system that can be installed in under two hours. It gives the platform air-craft a precision weapons capability through the company’s fearsome GAU-23 30mm cannon firing to the port side of the aircraft, usually through a rear cabin doorway. Light missiles can also be integrated. Pal-letising the system not only allows it to be switched between individual aircraft within a fleet, but also per-mits the carrier to retain its original transport or tanker capabilities.

PaWS can be tailored to meet vari-ous requirements, with one to three

PaWS gives you clawspallet-mounted operator consoles, an optional battery pack for self-powered operation, and the ability to integrate with various sensors. Typically, the primary sensor would be an electro-optical turret that can be used to cue the gun or designate targets for other weapon systems.

The GAU-23 is a version of the Mk 44 Bushmaster, with reduced recoil forces to suit it to an airborne application. In the PaWS installa-tion, the GAU-23 is mounted on a standard size 463L pallet that attaches to the cargo points in the aircraft’s hold floor. The pallet has shock absorbers to take most of the recoil forces, significantly reducing stress on the aircraft’s floor structure. The weapon is trainable in both ele-vation and azimuth, and advanced software within the mission system compensates for aircraft movement.

GAU-23 guns are fitted to the US Air Force’s AC-130W gunships, and the PaWS has been tested in the Leonardo MC-27J Praetorian.

A related sensor/weapon system has been installed by Orbital ATK in two Airbus AC-235 light gunships for the Jordanian Special Operations

Command, but this employs the smaller M230LF 30mm cannon instead of the GAU-23.

Jordan also has a programme for a gunship version of the larger Airbus Defence and Space C295, and this is likely to feature the GAU-23.

BAE Systems (Stand 05-C25) is now back in production of its 155mm/39 calibre M777 series lightweight towed howitzer after India finally signed a deal for 145 weapons in 2016.

The Indian M777 will be fitted with the Leonardo (previously Selex EO) Laser Inertial Artillery Pointing System (LINAPS), which increases accuracy and speeds up deployment time.

Production and final integration is carried out at the BAE Systems facility in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. About 70 per cent of the weapon is manufactured in the US, includ-ing the complete ordnance which is made at Watervliet Arsenal, with the remaining 30 per cent made in the UK.

The lightweight towed howit-zer weighs 4,437kg and, firing an unassisted 155mm high-explosive (HE) projectile, a maximum range of 24.7km is achieved. When firing an assisted HE projectile, range is increased to 30km. It can also fire

the Raytheon 155mm M982 Excali-bur precision-guided projectile to a maximum range of 40km, with a typical circular error of probability of less than 10m.

Conventional bag charges can be used as well as a modular charge system (MCS), with a maximum of five MCS being used to achieve maximum range. A burst rate of fire of four rounds a minute can be attained, as a flick rammer is mounted on the right side, and a sustained rate of fire of two rounds a minute.

The M777 is normally towed by a 6x6 cross-country truck, which carries the crew of seven, ammuni-tion and stores.

BAE Systems now has a company demonstrator for overseas trials and this has already been demonstrated in the UAE.

Sales of the M777 have been already been made to Australia (54), Canada (37) and the USA (999), with the Canadian army being the first to deploy this on active service, in Afghanistan.

High mobility in the desertSupacat (International Golden Group, Stand 04-C30) has devel-oped a specialised version of its combat-proven Jackal called HMT 400 (High Mobility Transporter) Desert. Following extensive trials, it is one of the finalists for a major contract in the region.

HMT 400 Desert is powered by a Cummins 6-cylinder diesel with an upgraded cooling system develop-ing 220hp compared to 180hp of the standard version, which gives the vehicle a higher power-to-weight ratio. The diesel engine is coupled to a five-speed automatic transmission and the driver can select two or four-wheel drive. Road speed is up to 120km/h and the 200-litre fuel tank gives a maximum road range of 800km. The company is offering the HMT 400 Desert in both, left hand drive and right hand drive configurations.

To meet the specific user require-

ments, weight has been reduced to allow it to be carried inside a CH-47 Chinook helicopter, which is one of the key local user requirements. The armour package has been removed and new lightweight seats and low weight bead locks have been fit-ted. The vehicle has a unique air suspension system that allows the selection of a variable ride height to match the terrain being crossed as well as to assist internal loading in a CH-47 helicopter.

Roll-over protection is fitted as standard and arma-ment typically consists of a ring-mounted .50 M2 HB machine gun (MG) on top, and three 7.62mm or 5.56mm MG m o u n t e d on the front

sides and rear to provide suppres-sive fire over a wide arc.

The company has sold over 1,000 of the Supacat in 6x6 and 4x4 con-figurations, with many of these being for use by Special Forces and customised to meet their specific operational requirements. These have seen extensive operational use in Afghanistan, Iraq and else-where in the region. The largest user is the British Army but other recent customers include Australia,

New Zealand and Norway.

Back in production

Major weapons contracts Orbital ATK Armament Systems (Stand 03-A07) has confirmed that in the last three months it has been awarded contracts worth $600 million for its 30mm Mk 44 Bush-master III and 30mm M230 weapons and ammunition with deliveries to run through to 2020.

The US Army uses the 25mm M242 dual feed cannon in its M2/M3 Bradley fighting vehicles, while the US Marine Corps uses the M242 in its LAV-25 (8x8) in the reconnaissance role.

Many international customers are now moving to the 30mm Mk 44 dual feed weapon because it has a longer range and fires more effective ammunition.

The 30mm Mk 44 has 60 per cent logistics commonality with the earlier 25mm M242 and 90 per cent operator and maintenance training commonality.

A complete family of 30x173mm ammunition has been developed for the Mk 44 and a recent develop-ment is the MK310 Programmable Air Bursting Munition (PABM). This offers air burst, point detonate and delay functions, with the selected mode depending on the type of target to be engaged. The delay function, for example, allows the 30mm PABM round to penetrate a wall or fortified structure and burst on the other side. This is claimed to reduce collateral damage while increasing lethality.

The Mk 44 has to be modified in order to fire the MK310 PABM, and this includes an integrated fuze-setter in the feed system, ABM fuze-setter module on the gun control unit and an ABM ballistic algorithm integrated into the plat-form fire control unit.

The 30mm Mk 44 can also be upgraded to fire 40mm ammuni-tion, including a 40mm PABM, which was recently demonstrated during the Orbital ATK Bushmaster User Conference in the USA.

LCS programme picks up speed

The US Navy’s (USN’s) Freedom variant Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) is now in full-rate production, with

Lockheed Martin’s industry team now progressing the outfitting and build of seven ships at the Fincan-tieri Marinette Marine shipyard in Marinette, Wisconsin.

European missile house MBDA has secured a follow-on order worth AED million ($93.6 million)for the supply of additional Marte Mk 2/N anti-ship missiles to the UAE Naval Forces.

Developed by MBDA Italia as a ship-launched derivative of the air-launched Marte Mk 2/S missile, Marte Mk 2/N is able to strike tar-gets at ranges in excess of 30km.

The missile flies a fire-and-forget sea-skimming profile using mid-course inertial guidance and radar homing.

The UAE placed its original con-tract for Marte Mk 2/N in 2009. The system equips twelve 27m Ghan-natha fast craf t ; each ship system installation comprises four box launchers and missiles, together with a fire-control system.

More Marte for UAE

Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding (Stand B-028) is highlighting dif-ferent variants of its proven SIGMA family of designs at NAVDEX.

Having already built SIGMA corvette and frigate variants for Indonesia and Morocco at its Vliss-ingen shipyard, the company in January handed over the first SIGMA 10514 Perusal Kawal Rudal (PKR) frigate to the Indonesian Ministry of Defence, on schedule and on budget. The ceremony took place at the PT PAL shipyard in Surabaya, where the vessel was assembled from modules built in Indonesia and the Netherlands.

The Indonesian Ministry of Defence awarded the contract to Damen, as main contractor for the construction of the first SIGMA 10514 PKR, named KRI Raden Eddy Martadinata, in December 2012. An order for a second ship, to be named KRI I Gusti Ngurah Rai, followed in 2013.

The 105m, 2,365-tonne PKR frig-ates are designed to undertake a wide range of missions in and around the waters of the Indonesian archipelago. Their primary mission is anti-air, anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, but they are also equipped to perform maritime

security, search and rescue, and humanitarian support tasks.

KRI Raden Eddy Martadinata was built using a collaborative modular process operating concurrently at Damen Schelde Naval Shipyard in the Netherlands and the PT PAL ship-yard in Surabaya. The vessel is made up of six modules: four of these were built at PT PAL while the other two modules – the power plant, and the bridge and command centre – were built and fully tested by Damen Schelde in the Netherlands before being shipped for final assembly and integration at PT PAL. Construction of the second PKR, using the same

methodology, is well advanced. Sea trials are set to start in May 2017 with delivery in October 2017.

To complement the exist-ing SIGMA frigate family, Damen Schelde has now introduced a series of new fast combatant designs in the 59m to 73m bracket. In line with the Damen philosophy of using standardisation to increase efficiency and reduce construction costs, the new SIGMA 5910, 6610 and 7310 fast combatants share much of the DNA of their larger sib-lings. For example, they are based on the same proven hullform, and share common aspects with regard to arrangement and systems layout.

Propulsion is based on a twin-shaft CODAD (combined diesel and diesel) machinery arrangement using controllable pitch propellers. This enables speeds in excess of 30 knots, while at the same time deliver-ing good fuel economy for extended range on patrol, or in transit.

Th e S I G MA f a s t co m b a t -ant designs also enable the support of extensive combat sys-tems, with those on the SIGMA 7310 comparable to those found on much bigger corvettes or light frigates. The smaller SIGMA 5910 and SIGMA 6610 are also capable of carrying impres-sive sensor and weapon fits.

architect Gibbs & Cox, and more than 500 suppliers spread across 37 US states. The Freedom variant is based on a semi-planing steel monohull ‘seaframe’ able to achieve speeds in excess of 40 knots.

According to Joe North, Lockheed Martin vice president of Littoral Ships and Systems, the US Navy has so far taken delivery of four Freedom variant ships, the most recent being USS Detroit (LCS 7), which was com-missioned in October last year. “Next we have LCS 9 [Little Rock] and LCS 11 [Sioux City], which are now going through testing in the shipyard,” he said. “Both will deliver in 2017.”

LCS 13 – the future USS Wichita – is in the final stages of outfitting at Fincantieri Marinette Marine. “We hope to have her in final test at the end of this year, with delivery to follow in early 2018 post the ice period,” North said. “We then have LCS 15 launching in mid-2017, with LCS 17 to follow down the slipway before the end of the year.

“LCS 19 and LCS 21 are now in build, and we will begin work on LCS

23 later this year. We are under con-tract for LCS 25.”

Lockheed Martin and its LCS team have started work on a new multi-mission frigate variant of the LCS to meet USN needs. A draft Request For Proposals for this more surviva-ble and more heavily-armed variant is expected to emerge in the middle of this year.

This effort is already benefitting from prior Lockheed Martin invest-ment in the development of LCS variants to meet the needs of the international market. “We’ve done a lot of trade studies and engineering studies to understand what could be added or modified to meet the needs of international customers,” said North. “A lot of that reflects on what could also go on the US Navy’s frigate variant.”

Saudi Arabia continues to show interest in a multi-mission LCS vari-ant, to be acquired under a Foreign Military Sale (FMS) arrangement with the US government. It is under-stood that FMS negotiations are continuing.

The LCS is a small sur face combatant designed to meet the USN’s needs for a modu-lar focused-mission ship able to execute anti-submarine warfare,

anti-surface warfare and mine coun-termeasures roles.

The weapon has been developed by the SAFAT Aviation Group and is in service with the Sudanese air force. Weighing 270kg, the BK-3 has a blast fragmentation warhead and is suspended from standard 14-in lugs. The weapon has a tail guid-ance section and a pop-out wing kit that allows it to reach out to 80km when launched from an altitude of 32,800ft (10,000m). Guidance is by a combination of an inertial system with GPS/GLONASS satellite posi-tioning. Target location co-ordinates

Known as a system house, Atech has extensive experience in com-mand and control, combat systems and simulators, as well as cyber-security technologies, developed mainly for the needs of the Brazilian armed forces. This is underscored by Atech leading on projects such as the Amazon surveillance system (SIVAM) and the nuclear-electric generation laboratory (LABGENE), as well as the system for the moni-toring and defence of Brazilian airspace.

In this regard Atech provided solutions that integrated more than 150 sensors into systems for critical missions and coverage of

more than 22 million square kilo-metres and three million flights per year. This experience opened up opportunities for Atech to par-ticipate in the development of the H225M helicopter’s naval mission tactical system for the Brazilian Navy, as well as the mission and simulator support system for the Brazilian F-X2 combat aircraft.

Atech has provided support for public and private sector projects with customised cyber-security solutions aimed at preserving assets, reducing loss and adding value to business. The company’s Athena is an integrated hardware and software solution that operates as a security platform in a box. It enables safe access to Web applications via the internet or other networks deemed risky.

All these innovative technol-ogy solutions are now available to export customers.

ADVETI is considered one of the leading institutes of technical and vocational training in the UAE. Its programmes have been designed in consultation with Abu Dhabi business and industry. This means ADVETI graduates are readily employable and able to the meet the nation’s requirements.

GAL has also signed a services agreement with AgustaWestland Aviation Services, under which it will support the AW139 and AW109 helicopters operating with the UAE Armed Forces.

Lazar eye

Having secured a contract in the Middle East in 2014, ECA Group (Stand 07-B43) has once again been awarded a similar contract for the supply of a military vehicle simulator (MVS). While not revealing the con-tract value, the company said it was significant.

The driving simulators are for three additional schools for the same customer, who expressed satisfaction with the quality and efficiency of training carried out at the first three schools, hence the

awarding of the new contract to the ECA Group.

Each of the schools is equipped with five MVSs and one instructor station. All of them are connected to the same simulation training system to provide training of military vehi-cle crews for both individual and collective driving instruction.

MVSs enable instructors and trainees to run courses adapted for different levels, namely initial driv-ing, advanced driving and collective driving.

Now that it is in service with Serbia, Yugoimport (Stand 12-E20) is ramp-ing up export marketing of its latest Lazar III (8x8) MultiRole Armoured Combat Vehicle (MRACV).

The baseline vehicle has all-round ballistic protection to STANAG 4569 Level 3, while over the frontal arc this is increased to Level 3+. Mine protec-tion is to STANAG 4569 Level 3a and 3b. The driver is seated front left, with another crew member to the imme-diate rear and the powerpack at the front right side. The latter consists of a Cummins diesel developing 500hp coupled to an Allison automatic transmission, which gives a road speed of up to 110km/h. Gross vehi-cle weight is typically 26,000kg, but there is growth potential to 32,000kg to allow for future requirements.

Manufacturers of lightweight and small air vehicles would do well to consider the TJ100 turbojet engine from Czech company PBS Velká Biteš (Stand 05-B02). The new high-performance engine has been purpose-designed and optimised for UAVs and target drones.

With an extensive list of envis-aged performance enhancements and refinements over legacy mod-els, PBS succeeded in significantly increasing engine thrust and end-use properties. This was done within the confines of the engine’s existing external dimensions.

The TJ100 is a single-shaft engine featuring a starter generator inte-grated in the radial compressor impeller, one axial turbine, an auton-omous fully aerobatic oil system and digital control. Apart from the ignition device and stop valve, all accessories are integrated in the engine for easy and convenient build-up.

Small yet potentThe key features of the engine are

its compact size, low mass, reliabil-ity, wide starting envelope and low fuel and oil consumption.

Development of the new upgraded engine started in 2012. The envisaged parameters included increasing thrust to 1,300N, service life to 300 hours, reducing specific fuel consumption, increasing air-speed to Mach 0.9, and expanding the flight envelope to 10km.

PBS designed new flow parts, including a new combustion cham-ber and more powerful fuel pump and fuel nozzles. Verification of the starting and flight envelopes involved tests at the Central Insti-tute of Aviation Motors (CIAM) in Moscow in a thermobaric chamber, which simulates a range of envi-ronmental conditions. The data obtained was not only used for the internal verification of the engine’s characteristics, but also to inform customers about the flying qualities of the TJ100.

Submarine radar dealUK company Kelvin Hughes (Stand 05-C19) has just announced that it will supply its SharpEye I-band Doppler submarine radar system as part of a mid-life upgrade pro-gramme for the Pakistan Navy’s Agosta 90B class submarines (also known as the Khalid class diesel-electric submarine). For this contract, the company is working together with Turkey’s STM, the main contractor. With its low-power, pulse Doppler trans-mission technology, SharpEye can provide a reduced probability of intercept, which significantly lowers the risk of the submarine being detected but without com-promising the target detection performance of the radar.

Surveillance equipmentNor th Wales-based Qioptiq (Stand 05-C24) has been awarded an £82 million [$102 million] con-tract to provide surveillance and targeting equipment to the UK armed forces. This was announced at IDEX by the UK Minister for Defence Procurement, Harriet Baldwin, who said: “This contract is made possible by our £178 bil-lion equipment plan, supported by a defence budget that will rise every year until the end of the decade.” By merging 20 individual supply contracts into one deal, the UK MoD will save £47 million over the next six years.

New-generation identificationLeonardo has been awarded a contract worth €11 million ($11.6 million) by the NATO agency NAHEMA, on behalf of the Italian Ministry of Defence, to provide its SIT434/5 New Generation Iden-tification Friend or Foe (NGIFF) interrogator for the Italian Navy NH90 NFHs (NATO Frigate Heli-copters). The SIT434/5 has been integrated on the NH90 NFH by Leonardo, and qualification tests on the Italian Navy NH90 have been completed successfully. The Italian MoD will be the first to gain Mode 5 IFF capability for its NH90s; NATO members will need to have Mode 5-compatible equip-ment installed by 2020, when the Mode 4 signal will be turned off.

A swarm of mini UAVsItalian company Vitrociset (Stand 07-B10) is showing for the first time at IDEX the SWARM, a command and control system for a co- operative fleet of heterogeneous mini/micro UAVs.

The Swarm system is able to plan, execute and review the missions of the co-operative fleet, with each of the mini UAVs equipped with a different type of sensor (optical, infrared or acoustic).

The sensors collect data from the environment to share with the rest of the swarm, using advanced computer vision algorithms. This makes the Swarm system dynamically reconfigurable and scalable in terms of operational capabilities.

An important consideration is that the Swarm’s mini UAVs are structurally simple, at sensor level, to ensure that the loss of any one or more elements has a negligible impact in both operational and economic terms.

A ground station allows the operator to have a clear situational awareness, with the incoming data being processed and enabling him to adopt the best possible strategies for ongoing operations.

The command and control solu-tion is based on a core built with a modular architecture, developed for robustness and reliability. It is expandable and deployable in a fixed multi-console environment or in a mobile configuration.

gun (MG). One of the two examples being shown at IDEX is fitted with the complete turret as on the Russian BTR-80A (8x8) armoured person-nel carrier, which is armed with a stabilised 30mm dual-feed cannon, a 7.62mm MG and a bank of electri-cally operated grenade launchers.

The troop compartment extends to the rear of the Lazar III and the dismounts are provided with outward-facing blast-attenuating seats, firing ports and associated bullet-/splinter-proof windows. They are also provided with roof hatches and can rapidly enter/leave the vehi-cle via a large power-operated ramp in the rear, which has emergency doors. The crew typically consists of commander, gunner, driver and up to 12 dismounts, but this depends on the weapon station fitted.

The Lazar III uses a Timoney T900 modular drive system integrated into an all-welded chassis, to which the all-welded steel monocoque hull is fitted.

Timoney’s driveline solutions can be customised to suit individual needs. It designed a bespoke drive-line packaging solution to meet the requirement, as the Badak vehicle has a special front-mounted transfer box linked to the first axle to provide greater space to house the turret system.

“The design enabled us to meet the customer’s requirement,” said Shane O’Neill, chief executive of Timoney. “The engineering require-ments of the PT Pindad Badak have capitalised on our 50 years’ experience of developing mobility solutions.”

Get combat-readyMilitary weapons training is sig-nificantly improved with the range of training ammunition and con-vergence from the UK-based UTM (Ultimate Training Munitions), showing its offerings in the UK pavilion (Stand 05-C27).

The company’s battlefield blank rounds (BBRs) emit a realistic noise and cycle the weapon as normal rounds do, without the need for a blank-firing adaptor (BFA). They also offer increased safety over tradi-tional blanks and are non-toxic.

The silent blank rounds (SBRs) are ‘dry’ fire rounds, which cycle the weapon with no noise or emis-sions. These are used to accelerate basic weapons handling skills and to improve classroom training, while also shortening training time.

UTM sees the Gulf as a priority market and actively seeks suitable

partners in the region. Said Paul Graham, international sales director: “Having training technology that proves and confirms training meth-ods and doctrine, we are confident the UTM offering increases skills levels and combat-readiness with the most realistic firearm combat training system.”

Italy’s Elettronica Group (Stand 06- B21) constantly endeavours to improve the defensive capabilities of its electronic warfare (EW) sys-tems, notably by also participating in international experimental trials.

During recent NATO EMBOW trials in Germany, the company demonstrated the effec-tiveness of its concept of advanced countermeas-ure techniques to counter next-generation infrared threats. For the first time, at NATO level, Elettronica proved the advantage of combining the use of conventional flares and its DIRCM (directional infrared counter-measures) system, the ELT/572. This combination maximises the break lock of imaging seekers, while the single systems alone are ineffective.

The company claims the most

reliable and effective counter to MANPADS is the DIRCM, whose fibre laser technology applied in the ELT/572 enhances its effective-ness, overcoming the traditional

Improving defences setbacks of previous DIRCM suites. It also allows the use of a small, highly dynamic turret that can very quickly slew and, driven by sophisticated algorithms, accurately concentrate the laser beam on the seekers of the incoming missile threats. This ensures an all-around effective pro-tection of the platforms, even against multiple simultaneous threats.

Elettronica is also showing the Edge, a new escort jammer in an autonomous pod, designed to increase the survivability of an entire attacking force. The electronic intel-ligence (ELINT) Edge capabilities include high sensitivity for very long-range detection, extended frequency bandwidth and accurate directional of arrival measurement.

The company’s ELT/800 is an innovation in ELINT equipment design for fixed- and rotary-wing application. The system allows tactical surveillance (electronic sup-port measures (ESM) function) and highly accurate data processing for intelligence analysis purposes (ELINT function).

Strsljen employs a modular

structure with carbon fibre, steel and aluminium elements. Develop-ment began four years ago and the first hovering tests are due to begin this autumn.

As well as carrying a sensor turret under the nose, the Strsljen can be equipped to fire the EDePro Spider anti-tank missiles from weapon pylons, and can be armed with a 12.7mm machine gun.

Strsljen has an empty weight of 400kg and a gross weight of 750kg. The difference represents the useful load, including fuel.

The Strsljen’s normal fuel capa-city is 200 litres, providing up to 3.5 hours of flight, but up to 240 litres can be carried to give an endurance of four hours.

Powering the Strsljen is a Phoenix 250 turboshaft, a new compact engine produced by EDePro. Weigh-ing 65kg, the powerplant produces 230kW (308hp). This gives a maxi-mum speed of 180km/h, although typically the vehicle cruises at 160km/h. Maximum altitude is 4,000m.

Zero the weaponSouth African company Desert Wolf Consulting (Stand 12-C40) is showing the innovative Red-i laser boresighting system for marksmen who need to zero their rifles without fir-ing a shot. This is especially critical for special opera-tions forces or paratroopers in a situation where any noise would give away their position and thus endanger their lives and mission.

The boresighting system consists of a replica round of ammunition with an integral laser pointer, which gets activated when the bolt is closed with the round inserted into the rifle chamber. By aiming at a point 25m distant, the operator has simply to memorise and docu-ment the position of the laser ‘dot’

on the target in relation to the sights or

crosshairs of the telescope. This relation of the dot to the cross-hairs will never change and needs to be done once only.

The marksman will know that if the red ‘dot’ is in that exact position as memorised, the rifle is zeroed at the required shooting distance.

Red-i has been subjected to tests in terms of Armscor’s Design Qualification Test Specification and was certified to conform to the requirements in all areas.

Although originally developed for land-based applications, the 40mm CTAS is also now being pro-moted for other applications, with the first of these being naval. It is the main armament of the proposed RAPIDSeaGuardian multi-role weapon from Thales. This leverages the RAPIDFIRE truck (6x6) self-pro-pelled mobile air defence gun system originally developed to meet the requirements of Saudi Arabia and it has already undergone success-ful trials. CTAI, a joint venture company between Nexter Systems of France and BAE Systems of the UK, is now

in full-scale production of the 40mm Cased Telescoped Arma-ment System (CTAS), which is the

largest medium calibre weapon pro-gramme in Europe.

Production 40mm CTAS have been delivered to the UK for instal-lation in the General Dynamics Land Systems UK Ajax tracked reconnais-sance vehicle and the Lockheed Martin UK upgraded Warrior for the British Army.

Fi rst weapons have been delivered to Nexter Systems for installation in the prototypes of the Jaguar (6x6) reconnaissance vehicles for the French Army. These are expected to be followed by 248 (110+138) production vehicles as the replacement for the currently deployed AMX-10RC and Sagaie armoured cars. For all of these appli-cations, the CTAS is installed in a manned turret, but it can also fit in an unmanned turret such as the Nexter Systems T40.

FNSS Savunma Sistemleri (Stand 10-CO5) is showing its Kaplan New Generation (NG) mobility platform technology demonstrator. This has an all-welded steel hull with an appliqué layer of passive armour, but gross vehicle weight will depend on the armour package and weapon installation. It is typically powered by a 771hp diesel engine coupled to an automatic diesel engine and has a maximum speed of 70km/h.

The modular fire control system typically includes two stabilised sights for the commander and gun-ner, with each of these having day/thermal channels and an integrated laser rangefinder.

While the French Army VBCIs are fitted with a one-person turret armed with a 25mm dual feed can-non and 7.62mm co-axial machine gun (MG), other armament solu-tions are possible. French Army CP vehicles are fitted with a remote weapon station armed with a .50 M2 HB MG. If a heavier weapon system is wanted, a VBCI has been success-fully tested with the Nexter Systems T40M two-person turret armed with a CTAI 40mm CTAS and 7.62mm MG.

Nexter Systems stressed to Jane’s IDEX Show Daily that its VBCI was combat proven having seen action in Afghanistan, Mali, Central African Republic and Lebanon (with the UN). In Mali, the VBCI showed its stra-tegic mobility by being deployed over a distance of 2,500km under its own power and without the assistance of heavy equipment transporters.

New ammunition companyEmirates Defense Industries Company (EDIC, Stand 05-A05) has just announced the establish-ment of Barij Munitions, which will be a manufacturer of all types of ammunition, ranging from ammunition for small arms and infantry to artillery and aircraft. The new company has expertise to offer services such as testing, demilitarisation, ammunition dismantling, disposal of rocket motors and smoke ammunition, and removal of explosives from projectiles. It laboratories are certified by the UAE Ministry of Health, with the X-ray laboratory accredited and licensed by the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation/Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation.

Independent suspensionsMichigan, USA-based AxleTech International (Stand 03-A08) is showing its newest 5000 Series in its line of independent sus-pensions axle systems (ISAS). Incorporating several new design features, including outboard brakes and lower component weight, the 5000 Series ISAS vari-ant on display includes the new Hydroride self-contained hydro-pneumatic springs and dampers. AxleTech’s 5000 Series ISAS prod-uct family is the heaviest line of independent suspensions for the defence industry. Complex armour kitsMTL Advanced of the UK (Stand 10-E01) has recently received a multi-million pound contract from an original equip-ment manufacturer to supply armour kits for a large overseas vehicle programme. For these kits, MTL will manufacture com-plex parts from Armox 500T and 600T material. MTL has one of the largest manufacturing plants in the UK, equipped with manual and robotic machinery, the larg-est laser-cutting machine with an automatic handling system, robotic pressing and welding capability, and other advanced systems. MTL is a supplier to more than 20 countries worldwide.

Hanwha Defense Systems (Stand 12-C35) of the Republic of Korea (ROK) has brought its latest produc-tion K21 infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) to IDEX in an effort to win a first export contract for it. It has been developed to meet the requirements of the ROK Army and has also been referred to as the Next Infantry Fight-ing Vehicle (NIFV), with an estimated 500 units under contract or delivered.

When compared with other IFVs, the K21 is well armed with a two-person turret armed with a 40mm cannon and a 7.62mm co-axial machine gun (MG), with some mod-els having a twin anti-tank launcher mounted on one side of the turret.

The K21 IFV has a combat weight of 25 tonnes and unlike most other tracked IFVs is fully amphibious with additional buoyancy aids and is then propelled in the water by its tracks at a maximum speed of 6km/h. It is fit-ted with an in-arm hydropneumatic suspension system, which not only provides a good ride for the crew

consisting of commander, gunner and driver, and nine dismounts, but is also a more stable firing platform.

To meet potential export customer requirements, Hanwha has devel-oped the K21-105 medium tank. This consists of a K21 IFV hull modified to take the Belgian CMI Defence two-person turret armed with a 105mm rifled gun and a 7.62mm co-axial MG. This combination has already completed its mobility and firing trials in South Korea, as well as in an undisclosed Asian country in Asia, believed to be Indonesia.

In addition to firing conventional natures of 105mm ammunition, the system can fire a laser-guided projectile fitted with a tandem high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) warhead to neutralise targets fitted with explosive reactive armour, out to a maximum range of 5,000m.

The company has also developed an armoured recovery vehicle, a command post and a driver training vehicle based on the K21 IFV plat-form, which are in service with the ROK Army.

For customers interested in helicopter simulation and train-ing, Ryan Aerospace of Australia is showing its capabilities along with partner Risk and Co, in the Inter-national Golden Group (IGG) display on Stand 04-C30.

Ryan Aerospace specialises in the design, development, manufacture, installation and through-life support of cost-effective COTS (commer-cial off-the-shelf ) helicopter and fast jet simulators. It also provides synthetic training devices for civil, military and emergency manage-ment applications.

The company’s customers and

users include the likes of Boeing, the UK Royal Air Force (RAF), the Austral-ian and Indonesian navies, and the Saudi Arabian armed forces, as well as commercial training schools and human factors analysis labs.

Ryan Aerospace’s affordable s imulators are modular and reconfigurable with a simple USB interface, which means they can operate on any simulator platform that can recognise a Windows gaming joystick.

At IDEX the company is showing its HeliMod (pictured) and HeliCrew systems, which will be running Bohemia Interactive VBS3, the newly improved virtual battlespace training solution.

Playing for realMaking wavesUK-based TMD Technologies (Stand 06-A32) is showcasing its latest technologies for the first time in the UAE. Said Jane McAlister, sales and business development director: “We see many opportu-nities for involvement within the GCC community with companies that are interested in expanding their indigenous capability, rather than outsourcing the complete solution.”

Automatic transmissionZF Friedrichshafen (Stand 08-D15) continues to invest in its capability to design, develop and manu-facture automatic transmissions for both the civilian and more demanding military markets.

One of its latest products is the seven-speed ZF-EcoLife Offroad automatic transmission, which has been developed by the com-pany specifically for medium- to heavy-duty off-road applications. According to ZF, this handles up to 2,600Nm of torque, improves acceleration, and changes gear automatically depending on the terrain being crossed.

This new transmission also fea-tures a high spread of 10 ratios and is claimed to significantly improve the vehicle’s climbing ability at the same time as reduc-ing fuel consumption, which are

key advantages for the military application. It also features a new torque converter, which has an integrated torsional damper to provide smooth starting and good acceleration figures.

The new transmission’s low weight of 450kg and 900mm length saves valuable space, which is always at a premium in armoured fighting vehicles.

The ZF-EcoLife is being marketed as a performance-enhanced suc-cessor to the ZF-Economat range of automatic transmissions, which are installed in many military vehicles all over the world.
