Company founders Suzy and Clark Neal Jr. of Sautee Nacoochee were delighted with winning these two awards, and accepted specially made platters at the festival on Saturday, Sept. 19. “We were excited and humbled to win not only first place, but the consumer choice award, out of all the contestants,” said Clark. “To take home the two top awards in our category was more than we hoped to accomplish at this event.” Their recipe for “Good Enough Shrimp and Grits with Candied Bacon” included their own special Georgia Apple Cider Pepper Spread, also made with four other Georgia-grown ingredients. This is the second award Unicoi Pre- serves has received for their Apple Cider Pepper Spread. Earlier this year, the com- pany was awarded as a finalist at the Flavor of Georgia, an annual food contest hosted by The University of Georgia’s College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, with support from the Georgia Department of Agriculture. The Neals started their business in May 2014. Unicoi Preserves products are the cou- ple’s own recipes, made by hand in small batches. They use locally sourced fruit grown in the Northeast Georgia mountains. “We were proud to be representing Georgia Grown, and we featured several of our fellow Georgia Grown companies in our winning recipe,” Clark said. These compa- nies and ingredients included Signet wine from Habersham Winery, butter and cream from Mountain Fresh Creamery, peanut oil from Oliver Farms, and, of course, Georgia Apple Cider Pepper Spread from Unicoi Preserves. Suzy added: “We had a personal con- nection to everything used in our recipe, as well as our display. Our local friend, Debbie Dowdy of Muddy Goat Pottery, handcrafted the sea-turtle bowls we presented our recipe in, and several of our friends loaned us items to use in our display.” Nora Mills of Helen was the official grits sponsor of the festival. That’s how the couple found out about this event. They sell their products at Nora Mills. Unicoi Preserves, a gourmet food company based in White County, swept the recent 10th annual Jekyll Island Shrimp & Grits Festival amateur cooking competition, taking home both the fi rst-place award and the consumer choice award.

Company founders Suzy and Clark Neal Jr. of Sautee Nacoochee were delighted with winning these two awards, and accepted specially made platters at the festival on Saturday, Sept. 19.

“We were excited and humbled to win not only fi rst place, but the consumer choice award, out of all the contestants,” said Clark. “To take home the two top awards in our category was more than we hoped to accomplish at this event.”

Their recipe for “Good Enough Shrimp and Grits with Candied Bacon” included their own special Georgia Apple Cider Pepper Spread, also made with four other Georgia-grown ingredients.

This is the second award Unicoi Pre-serves has received for their Apple Cider Pepper Spread.
