CATALOG LETTER

BRINGING BIEBER GENETICS TO THE SOUTHEAST

Bieber Red Angus genetics are no stranger to the Southeast. For many years we have been selling to this part of the country through both our production and private treaty sales. The first time I can remember was in the late ‘80s when we sent a pot load of bulls to Rollin Ranch for use on their commercial herd. Since then, we’ve primarily sold seedstock cattle to registered operations in the region. That began to change in 2006 when I received a call from my friend and mentor Jim Shirm, the ranch manager of Oates Land and Cattle in Big Sandy, TX, about managing the dispersal of his herd. During the dispersal process, Jim took it upon himself to teach me a lot about pedigrees in hot environments, including which had trouble and which thrived. I had known there were some differences, but it wasn’t until working with Jim that I realized how much success a cowline could have in certain climates if they were able to shed quickly.

Most people would wonder why cattle in Northern climates need to shed. We’ve noticed that when we are breeding, the cattle tend to get hot in a hurry and the cowlines that shed better also bred better, raised better calves, and

performed better. As the popularity of Red Angus has increased, we see more and more cattlemen that use our genetics in hotter climates successfully. An example of this is our customer Frank Howey of Howey Family Farms. In the photo on the left, the cow on the left came from our ranch and the cow on the right came from a seedstock producer in Nebraska that likely has not noticed this adaptability issue in their genetics. Seeing these results firsthand showed us that cattlemen in warmer climates can use our genetics to a high degree of success. This gave us the confidence to make this sale a reality.

Another reason for this sale is that we have seen an increase in demand for high quality carcass merit genetics in the Southeast. Despite the increasing demand, most cattlemen do not want to travel long distances to South Dakota to buy those genetics. That’s why we decided to bring the genetics straight to your doorstep, with the help of Garrett Thomas and Andrew Conley of Hi Point Sales and Marketing. As this project started taking shape, we knew that having them involved was important because we wanted people in the area that could provide the level of service our customers deserve. We wanted a quality sales management outfit to rely on in this endeavor, and we feel Garrett and Andrew think like us when it comes to sales and customer service.

In a recent visit to the area, Andrew took us to Châtel Farms which is owned by FPL foods, the only fed cattle packer in the Southeast. When we visited with Francois Leger, President and CEO of FPL Foods, he told us about his need for more high-quality carcasses. He told us he can sell all the prime he can get and the upper two thirds of choice. He starts to have issues selling the lower one third of choice and the select meat. He told us that if we bring high carcass merit bulls to the area, Châtel Farms will buy the calves as long as they are managed correctly and according to the requirements outlined on the next page. This offer gives cattlemen in the Southeast an incredible opportunity. We know from the Southern Carcass Improvement Project, which was done by Tom Brink, the current CEO of Red Angus Association, that in one generation you can improve carcass dramatically. If you want more information on this project, you can find the entire presentation on YouTube. All of these factors brought us to Bieber Fever in the Southeast in Reidsville, GA on Thursday, October 25. We know that Thursday is not a common time for a bull sale, but we have always felt that business should be conducted during the week so we can spend the weekends with our family. We thank you in advance for your consideration in attending our sale. Our team will do our best to make sure our genetics work towards your advantage and success. We consider our alliance with you our most important priority, and I personally look forward to meeting you at Bieber Fever in the Southeast this year and for many years hereafter.

BRANDED BEEF PROGRAM

Châtel Farms is seeking Angus and Red Angus based feeder cattle with proven high carcass merit to be used in the Châtel Farms Branded Beef Programs. All calves must be ear tagged and the birthdate of the first calf born in each calving season must be recorded in order to provide age and source verification and tracking. The Red Angus FCCP tag qualifies.

All calves must be raised without any growth implants, ionophores or promotants. Producers will be required to sign the Châtel Farms Natural Affidavit attesting the calves have been raised by these standards.

Producers must certify that all calves have been vaccinated with primary and booster of a modified live 4-way or 8-way broad spectrum vaccine, including, at a minimum, IBR, BVD, PI3, BRSV, Pasturella and a 7-way Clostridial (Black leg).

Châtel Farms wants to provide a positive economic impact on the beef cattle industry in the Southeast by creating new marketing options for high quality feeder and finishing cattle. With ample forage and grain availability in the Southeast, the missing piece of the beef lifecycle is now complete.

Pete Wall is a farmer and livestock breeder in Southeast Georgia. He has always understood the value of progressive genetics through his raising of Hampshire sheep and hogs, and now sees it even more in his production of beef cattle.

In the spring of 2017, Pete spent time visiting with Craig Bieber about his operation and what kind of bulls would fit his needs. After better understanding his list of requirements, Craig gave him a recommendation on what bulls to purchase. He received a second opinion from Andrew Conley who then purchased the bulls for Pete.

“I purchased bulls from Bieber Red Angus in the spring of 2017. We live in Southeast Georgia where it’s very hot and humid, and these bulls acclimated to the new climate very well. In my opinion, they breed cows as good as or even better than our existing bulls and have a great disposition regardless of temperature. The calves we have produced have moderate birth weights and require no assistance. These cattle are very vigorous and have the shape and look we were hoping to get with a Red Angus cross. I would recommend Bieber genetics to anyone looking for robust Red Angus cattle.”

EVALUATING YOUR PHILOSOPHY OF GENETIC SELECTION

Eric Mousel, University of Minnesota Beef Team

The type of bulls selected to contribute to a genetic program is one of the most important decisions cow-calf operators will make. These decisions will set the direction of the cowherd and the calf crop for many years to come. However, it may not be a real surprise to learn that the majority of bulls purchased in the U.S. cattle industry are selected primarily based on visual attributes rather than for traits that contribute to long-term profitability at the cow-herd level. Even with more relevant (and sometimes irrelevant) data available on any potential sire from a reputable seed stock program than ever before; the propensity for many producers to select bulls almost entirely based on visual appraisal hasn’t really changed much over the years.

Why is this the case you might ask? It is probably a multi-faceted answer to that question, but the central theme likely revolves around some variation of the supposition that most cow-calf producers do not really having a guiding philosophy when it comes to their genetic program. They may select specifically for calving ease or something similar; but other than that, they generally are very vague on what exactly they are breeding for. Similarly, cow-calf producers that maybe do have a specific thing they are breeding for may not have a very good grasp on how to achieve the specific target they are trying to hit, or simply do not have the discipline to repeatedly select for those specific criteria, to the exclusion of all of the ‘noise’.

As a related tangent, there are an alarming number of cow-calf operators that do have a guiding philosophy to their breeding program, but the philosophy itself may not, in reality, be achieving the results they believe that it does. As an example, every year I have a significant number of producers call about mid-summer looking for ‘anything with a set of nuts’ or ‘something that will make a live calf’. The underlying philosophy here is a suggestion that genetics do not matter to the bottom line and long-term success of a cowherd and thus there is a resistance to invest any capital in replacement breeding stock. Every time I encounter this philosophy, I can’t help but to seriously challenge this thought process, based simply on the fact that in today’s calf market, at the average cost of running a cow, every calf that weans off at less than 500 lbs. is a money loser.

That is a sobering statistic as the average weaning weight of calves in Cow Country USA is only slightly over 500 lbs. So, without a sales pitch for fancy bulls or this, or that, or the other; simple mathematics dictates that commercial cow operators with this philosophy do in fact, need more than a set of testicles and will require more than simply a live calf. It is important to remember that the genetics of those calves will need to offset not only the percentage of calves that don’t make it to a breakeven weight, but also to cover the cost of the cows that never produced a calf due to failure to breed or death loss at calving or before weaning.

I think it is a good idea for any cow-calf operator to evaluate their breeding philosophy from time to time and a good place to start this process is to think about what the end point is for that particular program. Most cow-calf operators in Cow Country USA sell their calves at weaning. However, it is still surprising to me to hear the number of producers that sell their calves at weaning, and these are the good operators, that place a very high value on selecting for marbling. The genetic potential to marble is a singular trait that the cow-calf producer that sells at weaning DOES NOT get paid for…ever. So why then are there so many cow-calf operators that select for marbling you might ask? I suspect that the biggest reason is because their seedstock supplier told them it was critical that they select for marbling and lo and behold THEIR seedstock supplier has the best bulls for marbling in the land! Of course I am not suggesting the marbling potential is a trait that never should be selected for by cow calf operators, but as a primary selection point it is a little out of place for an outfit that routinely sells calves at weaning. There just isn’t a conduit in the market place at this time that will force buyers to reward producers for this type of potential. That may change in the near future, but it is not in place yet.

The point is, that when evaluating the end point of a breeding program, the operator needs to look at whether they sell at weaning, background calves, retain replacement heifers, retain calves in the feedyard or finish themselves, or retain through slaughter, etc. The economically relevant traits that should be selected for will largely be determined by this end point.

The next point of evaluation for most cow-calf operators is thinking about ‘what do I need a cow to do to keep this program where it needs to be’? There are many, many things that will contribute to this question however, at a minimum I think we can all agree that these four things will be the base requirements for any cow herd to accomplish in order to main long-term profitability:

1. Have a life calf (Fertility) 2. Rebreed (Fertility) 3. Wean a calf over 500 lb. (Productivity) 4. Repeat this at least 12 times (Longevity)

So the question then becomes, what criteria should be selected for to achieve these four targets? There are probably a multitude of things that will contribute to achieving these targets, however, I think Tom Lasater of the Beefmaster breed of cattle fame probably put it most succinctly in the Lasater Philosophy of Breeding Cattle that a cow outfit need only to select for the six essentials to achieve a focus on long-term profitability in the cow business:

1. Disposition 2. Weight 3. Hardiness 4. Fertility 5. Conformation 6. Milk

Page 7: THURSDAY OCTOBER 25 - Bieber Red Angus Ranch · 2018-09-26 · the cattle tend to get hot in a hurry and the cowlines that shed better also bred better, raised better calves, and

www.BieberRedAngus.com 7

Additionally, other icons of cattle breeding such as Jan Bonsma of South Africa have placed tremendous emphasis on other selection considerations such as fleshing ability, muscling, masculinity, hair coat quality, and parasite resistance as key contributors to profitability. Any number of additional criteria could be named and selected for, but the breeder must keep in mind that the more selection points made for a program, the more disciplined the breeder has to be in finding and evaluating replacement breeding stock.Another key component of breeding philosophy that I think should at least be considered by any outfit is whether crossbreeding can help achieve the goals set for the program. After the wave of exotic breeds that entered the U.S. beef industry in the 1960’s and ‘70’s, it probably is no real surprise that the national cow herd is now mostly straight-bred Angus. However, it also should be no surprise then that cow productivity (weaning weights) has gone up very little since the time that we largely quit crossbreeding beef cattle. The heterosis afforded by crossing two different breeds and thus recovering the accumulated inbreeding depression found in all straight breeds, is the only real boost in production the average cow-calf operator is going to get. The real decision should probably be based on whether the goals of the program are to capture the individual heterosis as a result of that first cross of parents of different breeds or can the full maternal heterosis; where crossbred cows are mated to a third breed, be netted.

Individual heterosis has been shown to provide about an 8% boost in performance. Maternal heterosis on the other hand will provide an additional 15% boost in production. Heterosis is accumulative, so when both individual and maternal heterosis are captured in a breeding program, a whopping 23% boost in production can result from a solid crossbreeding strategy. I am not sure I could find a cow-calf operator in the country that wouldn’t take a 23% boost in production with little to no additional investment.

Now, I know you are thinking to yourself, ‘well, I only have 50 cows, how on earth can I crossbreed very effectively’? In fact there are several ways in which a smaller herd can quickly capture the tremendous benefits from crossbreeding. There are several rotating breed systems that can be employed as well as the use of composite breeds. Once upon a time, it was fun to talk about using composite breeds in a crossbreeding program, but the reality was that a solid composite seed stock program was a pretty rare thing. But now, almost everyone reading this can probably name at least two or three composite seedstock producers in their region. Two, three, and four breed composites are no longer very hard to find. Of course a tremendous amount of discipline must be exercised when crossbreeding with composites, but they are out there and there is a tremendous amount of data available from reputable programs on these types of sires.

How much is too much?

The final thing that invariably comes up is ‘How much should I spend for bulls’? This is a very open-ended question, and I don’t necessarily have a very definitive answer for it. However, there are a couple of benchmarks I think a commercial outfit can use to evaluate what they should be spending for bulls. My dad always used to say, ‘The cost of running a good bull is about the same as the cost of running bad bulls. You can pay for it on the front end or the back end, but you’ll pay for it either way.’ I suppose in a way, he was probably right. I like to look at it from a little different angle. Many outfits I have talked to cannot get their minds around how a commercial cow outfit can routinely spend $6,000 - $7,000 on bulls. I put the following table together to illustrate the cost of seed stock bulls on a cost per cow basis to help buyers get a little better idea of the true economics of bulls.

The far left column of the table is the purchase price at the point of sale which ranges from $3,000 - $9,000. The 2nd column is the salvage value of that bull. I arbitrarily took 1,850 lbs. x $0.73/lb. There is nothing magical about this figure, it is just an approximation and will vary widely from outfit to outfit. The third column is the net cost of using the bull (Price paid – salvage). The fourth column is an estimation of the number of cows a bull will breed in its lifetime. I figured this by taking an average rotation of 4 years on a breeding bull; 25 cows as a yearling and 35 cows as an adult. This comes out to roughly 130 total females bred in his lifetime. Column 5 is simply the net cost per cow per year of using that bull (Net cost/Cows bred per lifetime).

Estimated Net Cost Per Cow Per Year of Bulls at Different Purchases PricesPRICE PAID SALVAGE NET COST COWS BRED PER LIFETIME NET COST/COW/YEAR

$3000 $1350 $1650 130 $12.69$4000 $1350 $2650 130 $20.38$5000 $1350 $3650 130 $28.07$6000 $1350 $4650 130 $35.76$7000 $1350 $5650 130 $43.46$8000 $1350 $6650 130 $51.15$9000 $1350 $7650 130 $58.84

From the table, you can see that the net cost per cow per year of a bull that brought $7,000 on a sale is just a shade over $40/cow/year. It seems to me that most commercial outfits kind of have that $30-$40/cow in mind when they think about genetic value. Where does that come from? I’m not entirely sure, but many of us have heard the old mark of ‘the value of 4 feeder steers’ as a proxy for what bulls should be bringing. Well, if you do the math on 4 feeder steers right now, that’s about $4,500; which in those terms should be the average cost of bull. On a net cost per cow per year basis, $7,000 is not much of a stretch for an outfit that wants slightly above average bulls. I’m not suggesting commercial outfits should go out and spend $7,000 on bulls, I’m just pointing out the likely philosophical thinking behind this phenomena. When you break purchase price down to a net cost per cow per year, expensive bulls all of the sudden look much more reasonable.

Lot 1 is first in our catalog for good reason - he’s one of the top Right On sons we have produced to date. His HerdBuilder knocks it out of the park in the top 2% of the breed and he qualifies for Top Dollar, giving you a great opportunity to add a lot of value to your calves. His dam has a MPPA of 103 and a WW ratio average of 105. Lot 1 is also a stand out on carcass with an IMF ratio of 107 and a REA ratio of 109. It’s always tough to put all of the most important traits together in a functional package but Lot 1 does an outstanding job and looks the part.

Lot 2 is one stout bull and when we look at his pedigree, we see why. His dam is a maternal sister to the great Makin Hay 9913, an outstanding sire in the Accelerated Genetics line up for many years. Lot 2’s dam was part of our ET program and her sons aren’t the only ones turning heads. The daughters in this cowline are excellent and it takes a bull like this one to produce those great females. With Spartacus as his sire, he stacks some very desirable traits across the board and has even more potential for producing high performing daughters. We have a nice set of bred heifers out of Spartacus that will calve next spring and we feel very confident that they will surpass our expectations.

He may be a category 1B bull but the Durheim cattle are second to none when it comes to impressive carcass. They’ve won a noteworthy seven GridMaster Awards. We feel these cattle are far superior to a lot of category 1A cows because they have been selected with such intensity to make them prepotent breeding cattle. Bulls like this one have given many of our successful customers more profit with better calves to sell.

RBF MR. RED DYNASTY 31E is an eye-catching class act and son of the 2015 IBBA National Grand Champion TJR Red Dynasty 198/A. His dam comes from a program and pedigree developed upon fertility and production. 31E offers one of the most balanced set of performance traits from birth thru growth to carcass merit. Note his low birth weight and calving ease EPD’s with an attractive growth spread. He is a well-balanced, sound structured individual that exudes quality.

Red Dynasty 198/A is the product of foundation Red Brangus bloodlines. He has established a reputation for siring production-oriented cattle with depth, fleshing ability and a desirable amount of muscle.

Red Brangus and Brangus breeders should study these pedigrees for their unique combinations of recognized bloodlines. Red Bud Farms’ open minded approach to breeding is creating a modern Red Brangus that is building upon the best traits of many bloodlines.

Tom Bradbury of Bradbury Land and Cattle in Colorado offered us interest in this bull during the summer of 2015 and we jumped at the opportunity. His dam is an outstanding Red Angus female with a 104 MPPA, a BW

ratio average of 90, and a WW ratio average of 105. Stockman’s WW and YW growth are in the top 2% and 3% respectively. His progeny have great shape and are very easy to like and notice - which is why we were not surprised when his first AI sire group of sons moved to the top end of the bulls during testing. Several of these

sons are going to be strong candidates to replace him, but we are continuing to sample his progeny. Take a look at his sons on sale day, and we are sure that you will agree with their potential to excel.

Hard Drive has been the pinnacle of our program in recent years and for good reason. His data hits a lot of sweet spots across the board and his daughters are quickly becoming some of the best in our herd. We often get visitors that marvel at his daughters and how moderate they are. Our cowherd in general is much more

moderate than many think. We have always tried to keep mature size in check and we feel that Hard Drive and Rollin Deep, along with their progeny, do a great job of that. Hard Drive is a very impressive sire all around.

We have been using Unified as a natural service bull since 2015 and we like what he has to offer – including good feet like many of the Fusion derivatives. He is a striking son that we will continue to use in the future. Match his solid phenotype with a HerdBuilder in the top 15% and GridMaster in top 25% and you have a very top end herd bull.

Mitigator weighs in with great growth and carcass, and WW and YW in the top 1%. His dam is an outstanding matron with at MPPA of 106 and WW ratio average of 107. His sire Rollin Deep was a leading sire for us for several years and made a great impact on the breed as a whole. We will be seeing great things from this son.

Spartacus was our leading sire in 2016 and 2017, and he will continue to be in 2018 and 2019. We think Spartacus is a complete bull that will leave any breeding program in a very good position going forward. He is a great sire for us and many of our customers, and his daughters are some of the best females we have in our herd. Semen sold almost completely out this summer but will be available again soon through Select Sires or Accelerated Genetics. Everyone is very pleased with the disposition on progeny sired by Spartacus as they are some of the best temperament cattle we own.

Deep End combines Rollin Deep with the great Laura 158W cow, who is also the dam of Hard Drive Y120. His data puts him at the top of the breed in several traits including WW and YW. His progeny will be in a very good position for profit and we are convinced this sire could replace Rollin Deep with even better carcass data. We expect to see a lot of his progeny in the coming year and he is likely to have a strong influence across the breed. Semen is available from Genex.

Loosli Right On 423 was the first son out of Right Kind U199. We have found his genetics and progeny to be very useful to our herd. Right On is definitely a calving ease bull and works well on heifers. Semen is available through Select Sires or Accelerated Genetics.

HOW TO READ DATA/DEFINITIONS

1. Lot Number - This is the lot number of the animal. Cattle will have a white tag that will correspond to that number. Generally cattle will sell in lot number order.

2. Name - This is the registered name of the animal. Generally we name bulls after the sire and females after the dam.

3. Born - This is the birth date of the animal.

4. Reg - This is the Registration number of the animal. All Red Angus animals can be looked up on the Red Angus website by going to the animal search page and using this registration number.

5. Breed - This area has the breed composition and category as determined by the Red Angus Association of America. Breed Codes are:• AR = Red Angus• SM = Simmental• XX = UnknownThe Unknown cattle are largely cattle we weren’t able to prove parentage on in the Durheim herd. The unknown breed is either Simmental or Red Angus in the Durheim foundation cattle.

6. Category - • 1A = 100% Red Angus with no disqualifying features • 1B = 87% to 99.9% Red Angus with no disqualifying features • II = Equal to or greater than 87% up to and including 100% Angus blood content having one or more disqualifying features. Disqualifying Features include scurs or horns, ineligible white, black pigment, progeny of multiple sire groups, and missing birth date, or weaning weight and date.• III = Less than 87% Angus blood content

7. Sire - Sire of the animal

8. Paternal Grand Sire - Sire of the Sire

9. Paternal Grand Dam - Dam of the Sire

10. Dam - Dam of the animal

11. Maternal Grand Sire - Sire of the Dam

12. Maternal Grand Dam - Dam of the Dam

13. MPPA - Most Probable Producing Ability -- An estimate of a cow’s future productivity for a trait (such as progeny weaning weight ratio) based on her past productivity. For example, a cow’s MPPA for weaning ratio is calculated from the cow’s average progeny weaning ratio, the number of her progeny with weaning record, and the repeatability of weaning weight.

14. AoD - Age of Dam at the time of weaning the progeny.

15. ADG - Average Daily Gain -- Measurement of daily body weight change over a specified period of time of an animal on a feed test.

16. ADG Ratio - Average Daily Gain Ratio -The ratio of the animal within its contemporary group. ET and Twins will be marked with a TW and ET. These animals have no contemporary group.

17. WDA - Weight Per Day of Age -- Weight of an individual divided by days of age.

18. WDA Ratio - Weight Per Day of Age Ratio -- Weight of an individual divided by days of age. ET and Twins will be marked with a TW and ET. These animals have no contemporary group.

19. AScr. - Adjusted Scrotal Circumference -- A measure of testes size obtained by measuring the distance around the testicles in the scrotum with a circular tape. Related to semen-producing capacity and is adjusted to Yearling age. Actual Scrotal Measurement are provided on a supplement sheet one week prior to the sale and at the sale.

20. CE - Calving Ease Score – This is our recommendation for CE based upon the data and the pedigree. *** = Use on heifers; expect less calving difficulty ** = Use on growthy heifers and cows; expect moderate calving difficulty on heifers and very little difficulty on cows* = Use on cows; expect difficulty on heifers and some to very little calving difficulty on cows

21. Grw. Sc. - Growth Score – This is our recommendation for growth based upon the data and the pedigree. • G6 = maximum growth rating• G5 = high growth rating• G4 = moderately high growth rating• G3 = average growth rating• G2 = below average growth rating• G1 = low growth rating

22. DNA - Test ran on this animal.

23. EPD - Expected Progeny Difference -- The difference in expected performance of future progeny of an individual, compared with expected performance of future progeny of an individual of average genetic merit in the base time frame for the genetic evaluation. EPDs are estimated from phenotypic merit of an individual and all of its relatives and are estimates of one-half the breeding values. EPDs are generally reported in units of measurement for the trait (e.g. lb., in., etc.).

acc - Accuracy -- A measure of the reliability of an EPD. Accuracy values are reported as decimal numbers between zero and one. Values closer to one indicate larger amounts of available information and greater certainty that a bull’s EPDs will not change significantly as more progeny information becomes available. Bieber Red Angus reports the accuracy values for sires since they have high accuracies. EPDs are a more reliable estimate of performance than weight, ratios or other measurements. Red Angus EPDs are often presented with a corresponding accuracy value, which measures the strength of the relationship between the genetic prediction (EPD) and true genetic value. As accuracy value approaches 1.0, the EPD is “accurately” or closely estimating the true genetic merit of an animal for a given trait. Although low-accuracy EPDs are less reliable when compared to those of proven sires, independent research demonstrates EPDs to be the most meaningful indicator of animals’ true genetic merit. While “perfect” accuracies of 1.0, are never achieved, many heavily used Red Angus sires have accuracies greater than 0.9 (some as high as .99).

24. %Rank - This is the percentage rank of the EPD within the type of animal. Rank groups include Proven and Opportunity Sires, Active Dams, and Non Parent under Two Years of Age.

25. Wts - Weight --The weight for that trait in that column adjusted to a constant days of age by Red Angus Association and Beef Improvement standards.

26. Ratio - The ratio for that trait in that column within its contemporary group. ET and Twins will be marked with a TW and ET and have no contemporary group.

27. CED - Calving Ease Direct -- Predicts the probability of calves being born unassisted out of two-year-old heifers. Producers want live calves born unassisted. Selecting on actual birth weight is flawed; it is influenced by non-genetic factors such as nutrition and weather (ambient temperature). While BW EPD removes these non-genetic factors, Red Angus CED EPD is the best predictor of calving ease. The CED EPD includes variation in BW plus other influential genetic factors such as gestation length, calf shape, etc.

28. Birth Weight EPD - Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight, and is also used in the calculation of Red Angus’ Calving Ease Direct (CED) EPD.

BW - Birth Weight (BW) -- The actual weight in pounds at birth.

29. Weaning Weight EPD - Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning.

WW - Weaning Weight -- The 205 adjusted weight. This is an indicator of growth up to weaning.

30. Yearling Weight EPD – predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling.

YW - Yearling Weight -- The 365 adjusted weight. This is a measure of growth from birth to yearling.

31. Milk EPD - (MILK) predicts the difference in maternal production of an individual animal’s daughters as expressed by the weaning weight of their calves.

32. ME - Maintenance Energy -- Predicts differences in daughters’ maintenance energy requirements and is expressed in Mcal/Month. Recognizing that 70% of cowherd feed costs are burned up in maintaining weight and condition, Red Angus’ ME EPD allows for the selection of bulls whose daughters will require less feed; thus, reducing cowherd expenses. Includes selection pressure for ME EPD to ensure feed costs don’t get out of line when selection is made for greater performance and production. At Bieber Red Angus we collect cow weight at weaning time to ensure greater accuracy of this EPD.

33. HPG - Heifer Pregnancy -- predicts the probability of heifers conceiving to calve at two years of age. Many breeds offer genetic predictions of yearling bull scrotal circumference as an indicator of age of puberty. While puberty is a prerequisite, many factors influence pregnancy rate. Red Angus’ HPG EPD offers a tool

which selects for what is economically relevant to ranchers - pregnant heifers. At Bieber Red Angus we submit all heifer breeding data to ensure the accuracy of this EPD.

34. CEM - Calving Ease Maternal (CEM) - predicts the probability of a given animal’s daughters calving unassisted at two years of age. Replacement heifers should be able to calve on their own. Red Angus’ CEM EPD offers the industry’s most reliable prediction to address that concern. It includes not only the predisposition for a female to calve unassisted, but also her contribution to her calf’s traits (birth weight, calf shape, etc.) that make it more likely to be born unassisted.

35. STAY - Stayability (STAY) -- Predicts the probability of a bull’s daughters remaining productive until at least six years of age. Why six? That’s how long it takes a female to breakeven given all the expenses of development.

36. MARB - Marbling Score -- Predicts differences for carcass marbling score as expressed in marbling score units. Higher marbling scores are positively correlated with higher carcass quality grades.

37. REA - Rib Eye Area -- Predicts differences of carcass Rib Eye Area between the 12th and 13th rib. Increased Rib Eye Area has a beneficial effect on Yield Grade which also includes Carcass Weight and Fat Thickness.

38. FAT - 12th Rib Fat Thickness -- Predicts differences for carcass fat depth over the 12th rib, as expressed in inches. Increases in fat thickness have a detrimental effect on Yield Grade. Fat thickness measured in young seedstock may be an indicator of fleshing ability.

39. HerdBuilder Index - As the name indicates, implementation of the HerdBuilder Index will assist producers in building profitable herds. The HerdBuilder Index is built using the following production scenario:• Red Angus bulls mated to cows and heifers (resulting progeny ¾ Red Angus, ¼ Simmental)• Replacement heifers retained from within the herd• All remaining progeny sold on a quality-based carcass grid

40. GridMaster IndexWhile Red Angus has traditionally been known as a superior maternal breed, those who have retained ownership in Red Angus calves know of their potential to excel in the feedyard and ultimately hang a premium carcass. The GridMaster Index is built using the following production scenario:• Red Angus bulls mated to cows (resulting progeny ¾ Red Angus, ¼ Simmental)• All progeny sold on a quality-based carcass grid

The Red Angus Association Terms and Conditions will apply if the terms and conditions printed here are not applicable.

BIDDING DISPUTES: The auctioneer in charge will settle any disputes as to bids. His decision on such matters shall be final.TERMS: The terms of the sale are cash; the right of property shall not pass until after settlement is made. All settlements will be made with the clerks of the sale immediately following the conclusion of the sale and before any cattle will be released from the ranch.RETAINED INTEREST: We are retaining 1/2 interest in all bulls in the sale. We are selling the remaining 1/2 interest, full possession, and full salvage value on these bulls. This option gives Bieber Red Angus Ranch the option to collect, use and market semen from the bull, and does not restrict the purchaser from doing the same. This collection, unless agreed otherwise, would be done at the expense of Bieber Red Angus Ranch, at the buyer’s convenience. Also at the time of purchase, the highest bidder on a retained interest bull may elect to purchase exclusive semen rights for 100% of the purchase price in addition to the purchased price on retained bulls. If a buyer elects to purchase exclusive semen rights, Bieber Red Angus Ranch’s interest then becomes in herd use only. Bieber Red Angus Ranch retains all rights to use the bull within their herd.SEMEN RIGHTS: Buyers receive semen rights proportional to the interest purchased. If you purchase a 1/2 interest, then you are entitled to 1/2 of the semen collections at cost, provided that you indicate you want semen prior to collection. We intend to collect some of the bulls in the sale and sample them in our herd. We will cooperate with the buyer in collection of the bull. We prefer to collect most bulls after the first season of use, and we will contact the buyer when we intend to collect the bull at a time convenient for the buyer. PURCHASER’S RISK: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Animals will be fed, watered and cared for at the purchaser’s risk for a reasonable time.CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY: A certificate of registry and transfer will be furnished for each animal sold as a registered animal, after settlement has been made. Bulls are guaranteed breeders if not allowed to run with the herd until at least 14 months of age. Any bull which either: a) settles 1/3 or more of the healthy cows he serves; b) is the sire of 20 or more animals; or c) settles cows by natural service and passes a fertility test made by a competent veterinarian during any 6 month period of trial (provided for in paragraph 2 of the section of these sale terms and conditions entitled “Options and Privileges of Return or Adjustment”) shall be considered a breeder.Any guarantee with respect to the ability to freeze semen shall be by separate agreement between Buyer and Seller.Open females have not been served and are so guaranteed.

IDENTIFICATION: Each animal carries a readable tattoo. Tag numbers on the cattle correspond with lot and tattoo numbers in this catalog. Purchaser agrees to use full name of animal in advertising and on stall cards at shows. OPTIONS AND PRIVILEGES OF RETURN OR ADJUSTMENT: 1. All claims for adjustment or refund must be made in writing either within six months of the sale date or no later than six months after the animal reaches 18 months of age, with the exception of claims involving defects or parentage.2. In the event an animal is claimed to be a non-breeder, the animal may be returned to the farm of the Seller if in good condition and complying with the health requirements of the Seller ’s state. The Seller shall be entitled to six months’ trial following the return of the animal in which to prove the animal is a breeder. The Seller shall, at the option of the Buyer, replace the animal with another of equal value or grant the Buyer a credit for use on any products marketed by the Seller. Such credit of the full purchase price shall in any case be deemed full satisfaction and settlement. Any expense incurred for transporting an animal claimed to be a non-breeder shall be the responsibility of the Purchaser, except that the Seller shall be responsible for the transportation costs in excess of the distance between the Purchaser’s farm and the location where the sale took place. If the Seller proves the animal is a breeder, it shall be the obligation of the Purchaser to take delivery of the animal and pay all expense incurred for transportation.3. If a female sold as “safe in calf” proves not to be in calf, the Purchaser may receive service from the bull previously used, if available, or if the bull is not available, the Seller shall be obligated to make a satisfactory adjustment on the purchase price upon return of the animal to the farm of the Seller. Any adjustment provided for herein shall absolve the Seller from further liability, except in case such female proves to be a non-breeder. If a female represented as “safe in calf” at time of sale to a certain bull proves to have been bred to a different bull, the Seller shall be obligated to take a satisfactory adjustment on the purchase price upon return of the animal to the farm of the Seller (adjustments shall not be considered to a breeding fee or an allocation of the purchase price to any unborn calf ). If a female sold as “open” proves to be with calf, the Purchaser may return the animal to the farm of the Seller prior to calving for a credit of the full purchase price or for another animal of equal value, whichever is acceptable to the Purchaser. It shall be the obligation of the Seller to bear any expense incurred for transportation. LIABILITY: Neither owners, sale managers, clerks nor anyone connected with the sale assumes responsibility, legal or otherwise, for damages of any kind.CONTRACT: The above terms and conditions shall constitute a contract between the buyer and seller of each animal sold.IMPLIED WARRANTY: Except for those stated in the terms and conditions, there are no warranties, either expressed or implied, as to merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose with respect to the cattle being sold in this auction. The warranties set forth in terms and conditions are in lieu of all other warranties, either expressed or implied, and the remedies proved therein shall be the sole and exclusive remedy of the buyer, or any part claiming through buyer, for any breach of warranty or guarantee therein provided and all other obligations or liabilities.

BIEBER FEVER IN THE SOUTHEAST34For more information on EPDs, visit redangus.org.

HB ...... HerdBuilder Index – Need bulls for developing a profi table cowherd and maximizing the value of marketed progeny? Select a bull with a high HB value.

GM ...... GridMaster Index – If you market all of your calf crop and want to increase the value of that calf crop, select a bull with a high GM value to maximize your profi t.

CED ..... Calving Ease Direct – Breeding Heifers? Select bulls with a high CED to increase the probability that the heifers will calve unassisted.

BW...... Birth Weight – Predicts differences in birth weight. BW is included in the CED EPD, so simplify your decisions by selecting bulls based on CED instead of BW.

WW ..... Weaning Weight and YW ....Y earling Weight – Predicts differences in weight at weaning and yearling. While selection based on these growth measures can increase your payweight, be cautious what the bull’s other EPDs are.

Milk .... Milk – Predicts differences in weaning weight of daughter’s progeny due to milk production.

ME ...... Maintenance Energy – Selecting bulls with a lower ME EPD will decrease the amount of feed his daughters will require to maintain body weight.

HPG..... Heifer Pregnancy – Retaining heifers? Select bulls with a high HPG to increase the percentage of exposures that result in a calving observation.

CEM .... Calving Ease Maternal – Another number to pay attention to if you are retaining heifers. Selecting bulls with a high CEM will increase the probability of those daughters calving unassisted.

STAY.... Stayability – The most important trait if your goal is developing cows that stay productive, thus increasing your profi tability. Bulls that have a high Stay EPD are expected to sire daughters that remain productive in the herd until at least 6 years of age.

MARB .. Marbling Score – Select bulls with high MARB EPD to increase the number of progeny that grade Choice or Prime.

YG ...... Yield Grade – Marketing calves on a grid? Placing selection pressure on YG EPD will decrease the number of YG discounts on grid-marketed progeny.

CW...... Carcasss Weight – Selecting bulls with a high CW EPD will increase the weight of the hanging carcass, which directly impacts revenue.

REA ..... Rib Eye Area – Need to add muscle? Select bulls with a high REA EPD to increase rib eye area, which favorably increases Yield Grade.

FAT ..... Backfat – Need to reduce waste in carcasses? Select bulls with a low FAT EPD to reduce backfat, which favorably increases Yield Grade.

Red Angus Guide to EPDs

Top Dollar Angus is a genetic-certifi cation and marketing company focused exclusively on the top 25 percent of the industry in carcass and growth Angus and Red Angus-infl uenced feeder cattle. Top Dollar Angus is a program similar to other popular branded-beef programs, except that Top Dollar Angus does its branding in the feeder cattle and calf market.

Qualifi ed herds must have two or more generations of Angus (Black or Red) genetics with growth and carcass traits objectively ranking in the top 25 percent of the breed based on documented historical sire use. DNA evaluation conducted by Zoetis or GeneSeek is another workable method to qualify. Once your cattle have met the necessary requirements, they will be marketed under the Top Dollar Angus brand and logo, and will be promoted aggressively to a large number of feed yards and buyers. In today’s market, Top Dollar Angus cattle are seeing premiums ranging from $30 to $70 per head above the average market.

Why the premium? Cattle feeders know that Top Dollar Angus cattle perform better and have higher grid-based carcass rewards compared to other cattle. This puts more dollars per head into the cattle feeder’s pocket, which can be passed back to the producer in the form of premiums paid above market price.

Top Dollar Angus helps take the guess work and surprises out of growing and feeding cattle. Feed yards are tired of unpredictable performance and wide-ranging profi tability results from group to group on cattle they purchase. Cattle often look the same and have the same colored hides, but are very different genetically. That’s why the genetic certifi cation of high-end Angus and Red Angus feeder cattle is here! The industry must differentiate the best Angus and Red Angus genetics from average cattle, and that’s what Top Dollar Angus will do for you!

If you have consistently invested in high-performance Angus or Red Angus genetics, Top Dollar Angus will make your cattle stand out from the pack and get you the premiums you deserve. No matter how you market your cattle, our goal is to create more demand and higher prices for your calves.
