WFSU FALL RADIO MEMBERSHIP DRIVE Volunteer with WFSU for the Fall Radio Membership Drive: Get service hours in a casual, fun environment, and get a behind-the-scenes look at how radio is made! WFSU is looking for volunteers to help answer phones during the Fall Radio Membership Drive from October 15-24. Volunteers must be age 18 and over. 2014-2015 BEYOND BORDERS The Center for Global Engagement is offering a unique opportunity, called Beyond Borders, for FSU students to engage with students of other nations. This program provides short-term, rich cultural learning experiences in Jamaica or Germany. The exchanges are short but connections that students make are long-lasting. The FSU students selected to participate in Beyond Borders welcome students from Jamaica, who come to Tallahassee in October, or students from Germany who arrive mid-spring. FSU students then travel to the selected country for one week over spring break (Jamaica) or for three weeks in early May (Germany). Selected FSU students also take a one-credit class during Spring semester, which prepares them to make the most of their experience abroad. The FSU students’ accommodation, transportation, airfare, most meals, activities, and insurance are covered in the program fee. In order to keep the programs to a size that allows for close personal interaction, the application is competitive and 10-12 students are selected per exchange. FSU CHILDCARE FALL FESTIVAL Volunteers are needed to assist in running games and activities, and serving refreshments. This is a great opportunity to earn service hours and have fun while working with families and children. The event takes place on Friday, October 31, 2014, 4pm to 6pm. WESTMINSTER OAKS RETIREMENT COMMUNITY There is an old-fashioned Story-telling and festival day on Thursday, October 30! Lots of volunteers are needed – as a group or individually. This is an opportunity to become familiar with Westminster Oaks Retirement Community. Specifically, Westminster Oaks is looking for face painters, balloon animal tiers, people to hand food (e.g. corndogs or cotton candy) and most of all, people to help the residents to and from the health center. TUTORING AT FSUS Seeking tutors for The Florida State University Schools middle school and high school track and field program. The track and field program has been a powerhouse in the Big Bend for over a decade and now they are looking to become a powerhouse in the classroom by hiring 5 volunteer tutors to help facilitate our study hall sessions and provide top notch help for all of their student athletes. They need strong tutors in the subjects of Math, Science, English, Social Studies and Spanish. Study hall will be Monday through Thursday from 3:00pm to 4:00pm at FSUS. All tutors are required to have a 3.0 GPA in their college courses and be in their second year or higher in college. SPAGHETTI 100 Capital City Cyclists (a 501C3, not for profit) is looking for volunteers to help with a fundraiser for the 'Kids on Bikes' program, called Spaghetti 100. Proceeds from the Spaghetti 100 goes to support Capital City Cyclist’s Kids on Bikes program, where we provide engaging, educational opportunities for kids to learn skills and awareness of how biking positively impacts their health, environment and lifestyle. The two major programs that we put on under Kids on Bikes are: Volunteers are needed to man food stations /rest stops, mark routes, packet pick-up, etc. Those who are interested can register to volunteer directly on the cccyclists.org/spaghetti100/volunteer/. The event is November 15th and we need up to 75 volunteers. It will be a very fun and rewarding day for all!

UNITED AGAINST INEQUITIES IN DISEASE (UAID) United Against Inequities in Disease (UAID) is offering a Public Health Leadership Opportunity. Health Inequities are unjust and preventable differences in health between groups of people. UAID is a national organization that empowers students and communities to fight this injustice and eliminate health inequities. At the national level, you will attend an annual symposium, participate in educational webinars, and get certified in medical Spanish. At the campus level, you will have the exclusive opportunity to lead a one-of-a-kind, hands-on, research-driven project that will improve the health of your own local community. Based on college campuses like yours, UAID's presence spans from coast to coast. But only a few students have the unique opportunity to lead the organization as the Founder of their own chapter. This fall, UAID will accept no more than 10 new chapters. NATIONAL BLACK ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP The Florida State University (FSU) National Black Alumni, Inc. is an officially chartered affiliate of the FSU Alumni Association. The Association’s mission is to build a network of Black alumni and friends and sustain meaningful relationships on behalf of FSU. The FSU National Black Alumni promotes and supports the academic achievement and excellence of Black students at FSU. Consequently, the FSU Black Alumni Scholarship Fund was established in the FSU Foundation to provide financial assistance to minority students of African descent. As part of its 2014 National Black Alumni Reunion (“Fueling the Fire”), the FSU National Black Alumni will award $500 scholarships to three deserving students. One scholarship will be awarded in honor of Maxwell Courtney (first Black undergraduate student to attend and graduate from FSU), one will be awarded in honor of Dr. William R. Jones (Founder and first Director of the FSU Black Studies Program), and one is specifically designated for a student who is involved in the International Program or plans to study abroad. Interested students should complete the Scholarship Application, and briefly discuss their academic experiences and community involvement outside the formal classroom. Additionally, applicants must describe how they took a stand and were courageous in the face of injustice or a challenging situation, and how they used this as an opportunity to build social solidarity, encourage understanding, or broaden their academic experiences. TALLAHASSEE GREEK FESTIVAL The Tallahassee Greek Festival is one of Tallahassee’s cultural events. Their motto is "come for the food, leave with the culture." This year's Greek Festival will be held October 24 and October 25. The event is listed on the Leon County Volunteer web site, and qualifies for service credits for students. The event attracts 20,000 to 30,000 attendees, and the Pastry Booth is a popular venue! Volunteers are needed to help at this event. There are 3 shifts each day (9:00 am to 2:00pm; 1:00pm to 6:00pm, and 5:00pm to 11:00pm). All volunteers at the Festival receive a free meal. As a volunteer in the Pastry Booth, your job would be very simple. Volunteers stand behind a tray of pastries, and simply place the pastries on the customer's tray. The customer then moves on down the line. In addition, they will be preparing the pastries on October 21, 22, and 23, and require volunteers at this time too. NATIONAL COUNCIL ON US-ARAB RELATIONS Students are invited to participate in the 2015 Florida Regional Model Arab League, a debate-based simulation of the League of Arab States. This academic and leadership development experience is open to both high school and university students. The conference will be held at the University Area CDC, March 19 through 20, 2015. Each academic year thousands of students participate in Model Arab Leagues across the United States and the world. Through participation in the Model Arab League program students develop essential skills from leadership and public speaking to critical thinking and writing, all while also gaining practical, immediate knowledge about a critical region – the Middle East and the Arab world. Forming a team for a Model Arab League conference does not have to be difficult!
