NAIFA-DALLAS PROGRAMThursday | March 27, 2014 | Prestonwood Country Club

NAIFA-Dallas and our 2013-14 Program Sponsor are proud to present:

Scott A. Sherwin, President, SalesMastery Consultants, Inc.

“Why Sales People Fail... And What You Can Do About It”

There’s no such thing as a bad prospect; some are just more challenging than others. Join us for an eye-opening look at the deficiencies of modern-day selling practices and

Sandler Training’s tactics to manage it. Come ready to discuss current sales obstacles and rediscover no-nonsense approaches to growing your business.

Why Have a System?

Do you or your salespeople ever wonder...

• How to effectively take control of a sales call without feeling like a “pushy” and annoying salesperson?

• If it’s really possible to separate yourself from the competition on something other than price?

• If there isn’t a better way to deal with “money” rather than waiting for it to become an objection somewhere down the road?

• If there’s a way to stop buyers from continually “shopping” your products and services?  Do you ever feel like an “unpaid consultant”?

• If there is a non-manipulative way to begin selling when the prospect says “No”?

• Why traditional sales methods are no longer effective?  In fact, they can be hazardous to your health and your bottom line.

Scott Sherwin earned a reputation as an award-winning sales person, supporting business development efforts for companies like Employers Insurance of Texas, Kaiser Permanente and Aetna. After 23 years of success in the business, Scott decided his efforts would be most impactful by teaching and mentoring others how to flourish with a unique approach to selling. He became an authorized licensee of the Sandler Training® and in 2004 he opened SalesMastery Consultants, Inc. Through ongoing training and reinforcement, Scott offers effective training solutions for revenue growth. Scott currently serves on the Cowtown Executive Association Board.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGELaura L. Biesemeyer | 2013-14 NAIFA-Dallas President

Did you know that March is YAT Awareness Month? You may be asking yourself, What is a YAT?

Let me tell you a bit about YATs… our YATs are our Young Advisors Team. NAIFA created the Young Advisors Team (YAT) for members who are 40 years of age and under, or within their first five years in the industry. The purpose was to ensure that young and new advisors receive the vital tools, resources, and networks necessary to succeed in the financial services industry. There is no cost associated with being part of YAT; if you meet the requirements, you are automatically part of YAT.

If you are a YAT, stand up and be proud. If you haven’t engaged yourself in NAIFA as a YAT, please consider the following words from two recipients of Advisor Today’s Four Under Forty award. Both emphasized the value of NAIFA membership and of becoming involved in NAIFA activities.

“I feel like, pretty much, if you’re not a member of NAIFA, I don’t really know that I care to get to know you that well,” says Clint S. Fish, RFC, founder and president of First American Trust and First American Advisory in Bloomington, Indiana. “I’m not so sure you’re going to be in this business very long, and I’m not so sure that you take this business very seriously if you don’t socialize with other members or other professionals.”

Young advisors should join NAIFA “to learn, be around your peers, and stay up to date on what is going on in the industry and in Congress,” says Bryan M. Krupin, managing partner of Gilbert-Krupin LLC in Beverly Hills, CA.

In addition to networking and keeping up with industry trends, NAIFA membership opens doors to new friendships and some healthy competition, Fish says. “I know those people, and they’re my friends. We may compete, but certainly not in a mean-spirited way.”

Young advisors can also find valuable mentoring partnerships and key training opportunities through NAIFA, Fish says. NAIFA involvement allows them access to help from others in the industry so that they don’t have to go it alone.

“You’re working somewhere where you have a mentor and good training and you’re a member of NAIFA and you’re getting involved professionally. Once you’ve done that, now you’ve got your core, you’ve got a good company, good products, good trainers, good mentors and a professional organization; you’re involved,” Fish says. “But...the most important thing they can do in this business is focus on helping people solve their problems, instead of finding people to sell something to.”

Develop Discipline

Young advisors and those who are new to the business should be persistent and disciplined, Krupin says. “My father would argue that discipline is the most important quality to have in our business.”

To achieve success, they should also be willing to develop partnerships that expand their knowledge and reach. “If something or someone is out of your league, do some joint work,” he says. “I would rather make 50 percent of something then 100 percent of nothing.”

In addition, it is important to attain professional designations early, Krupin says. “Don’t make the mistake that I did by pushing it off. Then you get too busy, and trying to find the time to do it becomes very challenging.”

The job is challenging in itself, so “don’t spread yourself thin and try to do too much,” he says. “Maintain a sense of humor. Life is too short, and who knows that more than us?”

These are words from two incredibly successful YATers.  They utilized NAIFA and made it work for them.  You can do the same.  Get involved, use the tools and succeed!

Studies show that producers who regularly offer Disability Insurance to their clients also sell more life insurance than those who don’t. Almost 50% more according to a survey conducted by a large mutual company; surprisingly, less than 10% of producers claim to regularly offer DI. Just saying…

NAIFA and CFFP Join Forces to Create Enhanced LUTCF DesignationIt is an honor to announce that NAIFA and the College for Financial Planning (CFFP) have formed a partnership to provide a new enhanced LUTCF designation program to our members. The program will involve cutting-edge, state-of-the-art content to help prepare our members to succeed in this noble profession.

The new LUTCF curriculum will be delivered through a dynamic, instructor-led, live webinar platform, allowing students to be more interactive and engaged with program participation and real-time group learning exercises. Of equal value will be the program’s robust field training that puts classroom learning into practice. The new LUTCF program will cover four practice specialties: life insurance and annuities, health and employee benefits, multiline, and financial advising and investments. NAIFA and CFFP will provide more details in September 2014. Registration will open January 2015, and classes are scheduled to begin July 2015.

NAIFA has a long history of providing high caliber educational programs to accomplish our mission of delivering professional development and growth opportunities to our members. Partnership with such a highly regarded accredited institution reinforces NAIFA’s commitment to the LUTCF designation for the long term. Several entities – including NAIFA’s corporate partners – have spoken highly of the LUTCF program, and we expect the enhanced program will continue to earn their praise.

CFFP is the perfect match for NAIFA members, but ultimately, it is the consumer who will benefit from being served by the informed and credible NAIFA members who earn the LUTCF designation.

NAIFA-Texas AnnouncesNew CEO/CLO

NAIFA-Texas is pleased to announce Tim Von Kennel as the new Chief Executive Officer/Chief Legislative Officer (CEO/CLO).

Von Kennel brings with him 30 years’ experience successfully lobbying the Texas State Legislature, executive offices, and regulatory agencies for several of the state’s largest natural gas and electric utilities – Lone Star Gas, TXU Energy, and Atmos Energy. During this time, he volunteered 14 years as Legislative Committee Chairman for the Texas Pipeline Association, directing 40 association member companies’ legislative efforts for seven sessions. Among his legislative achievements are the passing of Dial Before You Dig–811, electric deregu-lation, and gas utility rate recovery legislation.

“Tim has worked with four governors and has strong relationships with candidates

from the top of the ticket to some of the smallest districts in Texas. His extensive knowledge of the inner workings of the Texas state capitol will prove valuable as we advance our mission of advocacy,” said NAIFA-Texas President Joey Ussery, CLU, ChFC, LUTCF.

Von Kennel has also spent time at the head of an association as Executive Director of the Consumer Service Alliance of Texas (CSAT), a financial institution business association. From 2008-2013, he grew the association from 8 member companies to 18, representing 90% of the market in Texas.

Finally, he has had a hand in founding several companies and coalitions. “Tim’s entrepreneurial spirit will be an asset to NAIFA-Texas as we explore innovative ways to reengage and grow our membership,” said Ussery.

Tim and his wife of 35 years, Phyllis, reside in Dripping Springs and have two grown sons. He completed undergraduate studies at Bowling Green State University and American University, and he has a Master’s in Public Administration from Ohio State. Tim enjoys reading and traveling the great state of Texas.

“I am very honored and humbled to be with this dynamic and respected organization. The energy and enthusiasm from among the NAIFA-Texas membership is contagious!” Von Kennel said.

Tim plans to visit many local associations over the coming months. He may be reached at 512.716.8800 or [email protected].

2014 NAIFA-Texas ConferenceJanuary 31-February 1, 2014 | Grapevine, TXTallie O. Young, RFC, LUTCF

NAIFA-Dallas had a great showing at the 89th annual meeting! We began the conference with Leadership Training, where we heard from national board members, NAIFA-Elect President Juli McNeeley and NAIFA President John Nichols.

After Leadership Training we attended the LILI graduation of Laura Biesemeyer. It is so inspiring to hear the stories of all the graduates. If you are looking for professional development, please contact one of your board members and let them know you would be interested in attending the next Leadership in Life Institute program.

Our own Jason Bach kicked off the Career Conference, with the topic “Everyone Communicates but Few Connect”. Jason was followed by former NFL player, Bo Eason, whose presentation was very energetic and exciting. He illustrated for us how a compelling personal story can attract and engage others. These great speakers were topped off by the one and only Congressman Ralph Hall who shared wonderful stories with us at the Legislative Luncheon. Other legislators in attendance were Sen. Tommy Williams and Rep. Ed Thompson, both of whom are members of NAIFA-Houston.

In addition to these great speakers, the networking was rewarding, and the special presentations for Keith White, Stephen Harris, Glen Baecker, and Des Taylor were wonderful, memorable events.

Meeting and getting to know NAIFA-Texas new CEO/CLO, Tim Von Kennel, was delightful! The selection of Tim will allow NAIFA to continue its mission of protecting our business livelihood from legislative and regulatory barriers while increasing our sales performances with expanding opportunities. If you didn’t meet Tim at our February 27th luncheon, please call or email Tim with your thoughts and ideas on how NAIFA-Texas can better assist your business efforts. Tim’s #1 goal is to increase the NAIFA-Texas membership! He may be reached at 512.716.8800 or [email protected].

At the business meeting, Jason Talley was voted in as President-Elect, Karolyn Chapman was voted in as Secretary/Treasurer for NAIFA-Texas 2014-15. The trustees elected were Hagan Dial, NAIFA-Austin; Chris Hatton, NAIFA-Great Southwest; and Wesley McKnight, NAIFA-Pineywoods.

Please be sure to save the date for next year’s Legislative Day and 90th Annual Business Meeting in Austin on January 26-27, 2015.

And also please try to join us for the Congressional Conference on May 20-21, 2014, in Washington DC. NAIFA is providing a $350 travel reimbursement, to which NAIFA-Texas is offering an additional $500, to help defray the cost of attendance. However, less than 100 reimbursement-eligible spots remain nationwide so be sure to sign up ASAP!

President Laura Biesemeyer proudly graduates from LILI. Way to go, Laura!

NAIFA-Dallas is proud of Keith White (shown left with wife, Melva) for being awarded the NAIFA-Texas Lifetime Achievement Award and Steve Harris, with wife, Susan, for being named the Bruce Murray Tall Texan.

Your NAIFA-Dallas delegates hard at work for you! (left to right) Grover Brillhart, Bev Norman, Laura Biesemeyer, Tallie O. Young, Steve Anderson and Cheri Stanwix

And a good time was had by all! NAIFA-Dallas had more attendees than any other association!

What Really Matters...Editor’s Note: We just got through watching the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. We witnessed the elegance and precision of the best athletes in the world, but we can all learn from these Special Olympians.

At a recent Special Olympics, nine contestants, all physically or

mentally disabled, assembled at the starting line for the 100-yard

dash.

At the gun, they all started out, not exactly in a dash, but with a

relish to run the race to the finish and win. All, that is, except one

little boy who stumbled on the asphalt, tumbled over a couple of

times, and began to cry.

The other eight heard the boy cry. They slowed down and looked back.

Then they all turned around and went back. Every one of them. One girl with Down’s

Syndrome bent down and kissed him and said, “this will make it better.” Then all nine linked

arms and walked together to the finish line.

Everyone in the stadium stood, and the cheering went on for several minutes. People who

were there are still telling the story. Why? Because deep down we know this one thing:

What matters in this life is more than winning for ourselves. What matters in this life is

helping others win, even if it means slowing down and changing our course.
