Pastoral Concerns:

A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be celebrated for The Rev. O. Thomas Miles at Potomac Presbyterian Church, 10301 River Road, Potomac, MD 20854 on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. with a reception immediately following in Fellowship Hall. The Rev. O. Thomas Miles served Potomac Presbyterian Church beginning in 1989 as Parish Associate. During two different periods of the church’s history he served as Interim Pastor and he also held the position of Parish Advisor. Our deepest sympathy goes out to Tom’s two daughters, Sally Miles and Kathleen Miles and to his beloved companion, Grace Sheppard.

Years ago, New Hope PC was fortunate enough to have a volunteer Music/Choir Director- Elaine Yanisko, who for many years was the Organist/Pianist and Music Guru for our church. She purchased and accumulated many pieces of choir music, which she and husband- Elder George Yanisko now wish to donate to a needy church home in the NCP.

Our current Music Ministry Director Tsveta Dabova has reviewed and took some material from the 6-boxes of music, which she describes as, "a treasure chest of adult and children's choir Music...The styles and the difficulty of the Music varies. You can satisfy a small and a bigger choir, depending. There are also a couple of Plays/dramas set to Music there as well."

Dear Ones in Christ,

I’ve been reading Cal Newport’s text “Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World” because I’m one of those who is easily distracted. His thesis is no surprise – in a world filled with short blips of information we’ve forgotten how to do what he calls “Deep Work”. Being able to focus on a task for a few hours has become a lost art… but he suggests several ways to reclaim that ability. Newport makes the connection between productivity, effectiveness and significant time spent out of the shallows.

I’ve found myself looking at my calendar a bit differently. What changes might I make in order to make room for deeper work? Are there proactive things I could be doing if I only allowed myself the time to do them? What really matters? It’s good stuff.

It also has caused me to recall the hundreds of meetings I’ve attended in years of ministry, and makes me wonder what would happen if our time spent together in meetings also included some significant Deep Work? What if we spent more time digging into questions about what it means to be the church and less on issues of plumbing?

What would happen if we put Deep Work first?

But what if all those things took a back seat to the deeper questions?

If our church didn’t exist… would the neighborhood notice?

Where is God at work in the community, and can we support that in some way?

What are the gifts our church brings? Are they the gifts that are needed?

Where are we simply going through the motions?

What do we discern is God’s plan for our church?

Keynote Speaker: Rev. Dr. Kathy Dawson

Dr. Dawson’s interests revolve around spiritu-

al development, crea�ve teaching methodolo-

gies, curriculum theory, and children’s minis-

try. Her current research explores how par-

ents and the church can have faithful conver-

sa�ons around fantasy literature for children

and youth. Dr. Dawson was chosen 2015 Edu-

cator of the Year by the Associa�on

Karen currently serves as Ac�ng Head of Staff

and Director, Congrega�onal Development

and Mission for Na�onal Capital Presbytery.

She began work at NCP in July of 2015, a/er

pastoring congrega�ons in NY and NJ for the

last 20 years. She grew up in Buffalo, NY and

received her MDiv from Union Theological

Seminary in NYC. She is currently pursuing a

PhD in Organiza�onal Leadership from East-

ern University and is in the disserta�on stage.

Music: Arthur Thompson

A lifelong member of First Presbyterian Car-

lisle, PA, has served as organist since 2013.

“Art” is a graduate of Shenandoah Conserva-

tory of Music, Winchester, VA. Art has served

as musical director/accompanist for over 60

mid-state theater produc�ons, and has been

accompanist for Cantate Carlisle since the

group was formed in 1990.

The Covenant of Confirma(on Confirma�on has too o/en been relegated to the

periphery of congrega�onal life; it needs to be

front and center, as the church fulfills its call to

make, bap�ze, and teach disciples. In this work-

shop, explore the covenant of Confirma�on found

in the four ques�ons asked of confirmands and

how Big God Big Ques�ons can play a crucial role in

your Confirma�on program.

#2. Grandparen(ng in Faith Forma(on.

Led by Laurie Juarez "We had two new families join our church a few

years back and we asked them - what aEracted

you here? They answered - we love how every

genera�on is represented. All genera�ons play an

important role in the faith of our children." They

were correct, having all genera�ons represented in

a church is a huge bonus. Learn how you can con-

nect your youngest genera�on with your oldest

genera�on!

Led by Barbara Chalfant In a disaster we rush to make sure everybody is

safe. But what about the children? We care for

their bodies but what about their spirits? Come

learn and leave with a plan.

#7. Liturgy Inclusive Of Children

Led by Keith Sundberg Liturgy that is wriEen with children in mind creates

an inclusive celebra�on. They are listening and we

need to help them understand as much as possible.

This workshop will focus on language, movement,

symbols, and opportuni�es to help children par�ci-

pate as fully as adults.

#8. Reclaiming Sabbath for Families

Led by Susan Wisseman In an era where "busier is beEer" seems to be the

way many of us live our lives, how do we buck the

trend and make sabbath �me a part of our weekly

rou�ne? We'll talk about, and prac�ce, what kind

of changes -- small to large -- we can make within

our families to take some �me to rest, be re-

freshed, make our lives be more sane, and honor

the Sabbath.

Children & Youth Spirituality Center

The 2019 EAPCE Event Spirituality Center will

be constructed as an example where children

and youth can learn, appreciate, and enjoy

some of the Spiritual Disciplines of the church.

Sta�ons and ac�vi�es will be created high-

ligh�ng a specific Bible story, each one con-

cerning a child or youth. Instruc�ons and

handouts will be available to enable each par-

�cipate to create as they need.

#5. Welcoming LGBTQ

Led by Jenna Newman and Jenny Bigley Authen�c engagement with the communi�es that

our congrega�ons serve means not shying away

from the issues of the community. The reality is

that, for many, the church has not been

very welcoming to LGBTQ+ individuals. We don’t

always “speak the language” which can impose a

barrier to a genuine, warm welcome. If you aren’t

sure how to properly welcome, accept, and engage

members of the LGBTQ+ community, everyone is at

a disadvantage. Come learn respecLul, Christ-filled

ways to welcome, converse with and minister to

members of the LGBTQ+ community and their fam-

ilies.

Museum of the Palestinian People The film follows the stories of four young Palestinians (ages 11-14) detained and imprisoned under the Israeli military and political systems. Motaz, Marwan, Nooran and Shadi, along with their families, detail their experiences of detainment in the hands of Israeli settlers, soldiers, and interrogators. The film helps audiences digest aspects of the Israeli occupation which create systems of imprisonment more broadly within Palestinian society. For those living under a military occupation, imprisonment extends far beyond the prison walls.

cash bar reception• Online access to session materials Refund/Cancellation PolicyAll conference registration cancellations and refund requests must be made in writing to cancel_reservations@ncgpc.org by May 10, 2019. A refund of all fees, minus a $50 administrative fee, will be given for cancellations received by that date. No refunds will be granted for requests emailed after May 10, 2019. A transfer of your full registration to another individual is permitted prior to the conference by submitting written request to registration@ncgpc.org and paying a $50 transfer fee. Onsite transfers must be accompanied by proof of the original confirmation letter. The individual submitting the transfer request is responsible for all financial obligations (any balance due) associated with that substitution. Badge sharing, splitting, and reprints are strictly prohibited.

PG Days will be cancelled should the federal government be shut down because of weather or an act of terrorism. Absent a federal government shutdown, the Board of Directors and the PG Days Committee chair will determine whether to cancel the event where there is any concern because of weather or other emergencies.

ScholarshipsNCGPC is pleased to offer scholarships to qualified individuals. Scholarship applications can be filled out and submitted online via the PlannedGivingDays.org website. The application deadline is Friday, April 5. Scholarship awards will be announced Tuesday, April 16.

Hotel InformationThe Key Bridge Marriott is located at 1401 Lee Highway, Arlington, Virginia 22209, a short walk from the Rosslyn Metro station. Parking is available at the hotel for $25 per day.

Room ReservationsTo make your reservation, follow our special link, or go to the Marriott’s website and then enter the arrival/departure dates. You can also call the Key Bridge Marriott at (703) 524-6400 and mention that you are with the National Capital Gift Planning Council to receive the PG Days conference rate of $241/night plus tax. However, to receive the PG Days conference rate, your reservation must be made by Wednesday, May 1, 2019.
