Pastoral Concerns:
A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be celebrated for The Rev. O. Thomas Miles at Potomac Presbyterian Church, 10301 River Road, Potomac, MD 20854 on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. with a reception immediately following in Fellowship Hall. The Rev. O. Thomas Miles served Potomac Presbyterian Church beginning in 1989 as Parish Associate. During two different periods of the church’s history he served as Interim Pastor and he also held the position of Parish Advisor. Our deepest sympathy goes out to Tom’s two daughters, Sally Miles and Katherine Miles and to his beloved companion, Grace Sheppard.

Dear Ones in Christ,
Let me begin by stating that I know we are a Resurrection people. We may have put away the Alleluias during Lent, but the lily orders have been placed and the white paraments prepared. We know how to do Easter. We are a Resurrection people!
Worship leadership struggles each year with trying to make the connection between Good Friday and Easter. Some of our churches will have both Palms and Passion this coming Sunday to bridge the gap. We will hope that our members come and break bread on Thursday and hear the Last Words on Friday. We know that without the gut-wrenching experience of the cross, the empty tomb loses some of its emotional impact… and yet, in the end, we are a Resurrection people.
But I wonder… are we not also a Good Friday people?
As I move through the Presbytery, I often hear the word “sustainable”. I understand its intent, and certainly believe that sustainability should be a factor in how we make our decisions, but I worry that it has become a greater factor than the Great Commission.
I was a guest at the PCUSA polity class at Wesley Seminary a few weeks ago, and the Rev. Dr. David Ensign reminded me of these words, found in the Foundations section of our Book of Order:
“The Church is to be a community of faith, entrusting itself to God alone, even at the risk of losing its life.”
Are we not also a Good Friday people?
In Christ,
Karen
Clerks’ Tip of the Month Pulpit Supply, Temporary Supply, and Moderators
April, 2019
Sometimes churches are without a pastor or are between pastors or sometimes they have a situation that calls for a different minister to provide services. National Capital Presbytery has systems to help churches in these situations and, of course, policies that should be followed.
If a congregation needs someone to come preach, the clerk of session or other church member can call Colette Ramm, the Administrator for the Committee on Ministry at 240-514-5351 for a Pulpit Supply List. That list contains names and contact information for Ministers of Word and Sacrament who can fill a pulpit on a given Sunday. We have an
Honorarium Policy on the presbytery website that covers these situations, www.thepresbytery.org. Here is a link to the policy: https://thepresbytery.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/2019_Honorarium_Update_cr181109.pdf.
If a congregation is without a pastor for a period and has need of more than a pulpit supply, the Committee on Ministry Transitions Commission will assist in obtaining a short-term supply, sometimes called a “temporary supply.” There are honorarium requirements for these positions also on the link above.
Finally, sometimes churches need someone to moderate a session meeting or a congregational meeting. The Book of Order provides that the pastor of a congregation shall be the moderator of the session. But, “[i]f it is impractical for the pastor to moderate, he or she shall invite another [minister] who is a member of the presbytery or a person authorized by the presbytery to serve as moderator. If there is no installed pastor, or if the installed pastor is unable to invite another moderator, the presbytery shall make provision for a moderator.” G-3.0104. The same rules apply with respect to congregational meetings. G-1.0504. A couple of glosses on this. National Capital Presbytery has appointed pastors who are not called, i.e., stated supply pastors, to be the moderators of the sessions and congregational meetings in their churches. In addition, NCP has delegated to me the authority to appoint moderators on behalf of the presbytery. So, if your session needs a moderator and either you don’t have a pastor, or your pastor is unable to appoint someone to moderate, send me an email or call me to arrange for a moderator. Moderators, too, receive honorariums, and you can find the rules on the link above.
If you have a tip you think others could use or a topic you would like information on, please let me know at [email protected].

The ENNEAGRAM
Nine Personalities,
Nine Points of View
The Enneagram is a powerful tool for self- discovery. It is based on the theory that each of us is a variation on one of nine core personality types. In discovering our type, we gain access to the underlying motivation and focus of attention to which each of us is predisposed. By observing our motivation and attention, we can broaden our experience of life. Over time we have become “blind” to our automatic behaviors and ingrained motivations. The Enneagram helps us to look at our “blindness” in an accepting way and move our individual lives into a more humble and effective balance.
About Barbara Jaquette, MSW, has studied and taught the Enneagram for 30 years. Certified to teach by the Helen Palmer / David Daniels school of the Enneagram in the narrative tradition. (Narrative tradition means that it is in telling our story and listening to the stories of others that we come to know the Enneagram.)

Morning: 10:30 to 12:00 Noon
#1. Big God Big Quesons:
The Covenant of Confirma(on Confirmaon has too o/en been relegated to the
periphery of congregaonal life; it needs to be
front and center, as the church fulfills its call to
make, bapze, and teach disciples. In this work-
shop, explore the covenant of Confirmaon found
in the four quesons asked of confirmands and
how Big God Big Quesons can play a crucial role in
your Confirmaon program.
#2. Grandparen(ng in Faith Forma(on.
Led by Laurie Juarez "We had two new families join our church a few
years back and we asked them - what aEracted
you here? They answered - we love how every
generaon is represented. All generaons play an
important role in the faith of our children." They
were correct, having all generaons represented in
a church is a huge bonus. Learn how you can con-
nect your youngest generaon with your oldest
generaon!
Led by Barbara Chalfant In a disaster we rush to make sure everybody is
safe. But what about the children? We care for
their bodies but what about their spirits? Come
learn and leave with a plan.
#7. Liturgy Inclusive Of Children
Led by Keith Sundberg Liturgy that is wriEen with children in mind creates
an inclusive celebraon. They are listening and we
need to help them understand as much as possible.
This workshop will focus on language, movement,
symbols, and opportunies to help children parci-
pate as fully as adults.
#8. Reclaiming Sabbath for Families
Led by Susan Wisseman In an era where "busier is beEer" seems to be the
way many of us live our lives, how do we buck the
trend and make sabbath me a part of our weekly
roune? We'll talk about, and pracce, what kind
of changes -- small to large -- we can make within
our families to take some me to rest, be re-
freshed, make our lives be more sane, and honor
the Sabbath.
Children & Youth Spirituality Center
The 2019 EAPCE Event Spirituality Center will
be constructed as an example where children
and youth can learn, appreciate, and enjoy
some of the Spiritual Disciplines of the church.
Staons and acvies will be created high-
lighng a specific Bible story, each one con-
cerning a child or youth. Instrucons and
handouts will be available to enable each par-
cipate to create as they need.
#4. Liturgy Inclusive Of Children
Led by Keith Sundberg
Liturgy that is wriEen with children in mind creates

need to help them understand as much as possible.
This workshop will focus on language, movement,

A5ernoon: 1:00-2:30 PM
#5. Welcoming LGBTQ
Led by Jenna Newman and Jenny Bigley Authenc engagement with the communies that
our congregaons serve means not shying away
from the issues of the community. The reality is
that, for many, the church has not been
very welcoming to LGBTQ+ individuals. We don’t
always “speak the language” which can impose a
barrier to a genuine, warm welcome. If you aren’t
sure how to properly welcome, accept, and engage
members of the LGBTQ+ community, everyone is at
a disadvantage. Come learn respecLul, Christ-filled
ways to welcome, converse with and minister to
members of the LGBTQ+ community and their fam-
ilies.
#6 Curriculum Conversa(ons Come enjoy a conversaon with one of our GA staff
with me to hear about what is new and what is in
the works for resources and support for educaon-
al ministry in the PCUSA.
