Thursday Letter from Cumberland April 30th, 2020 Spring waits for no one, nor is it an observer of COVID-19! The front of Cumberland is ablaze with spring blossoms, even in the absence of our Cumberland students. Thank you to the bulb planters who had a vision in the fall of how glorious our beds could look in the spring. Take a walk past Cumberland, with appropriate face covering and social distancing of course, to enjoy this beauty. Before the end of the virtual school year on June 11th, we will be creating tentative class groupings for next year. In this process, we take into account many considerations as we work to create balanced classes across each grade level. We consider the needs of individual students and we strive to create classes balanced in terms of size, gender, learning and behavioral support needs, language development and special factors. Your child’s teacher knows your child very well as a person and a learner. She/he is very involved in this process, as are the grade level teams, Encore teachers, school counselors, Mr. Neis and me. We know that all teachers are skilled professionals and there is no one perfect placement for a child. Children benefit from exposure to a variety of teaching styles and class groupings. An Optional Placement Information Form is provided for you to give any additional information for our consideration. This form is completely optional and your child will be considered individually whether you return a form or not. This links to the form. Forms are due by May 8th. To slightly reduce the Encore lesson load for kids and families, and to allow our Counselors and Library Media Specialists more time to attend to all of the aspects of their roles, we have shifted their lessons to every other week. Survey: Thank you for completing the Virtual Time Learning Survey. We had a huge response, providing a broad picture of your child’s experience during this time. Social/Emotional/Mental Health resources: The School District of Whitefish Bay School Psychologists assembled social/emotional/mental health resources related to COVID-19 that may offer support to your family. Their letter is below. Warm regards, Jayne Heffron

Spring waits for no one, nor is it an observer of COVID-19! The front of Cumberland is ablaze with spring blossoms, even in the absence of our Cumberland students. Dear Families,

As the country and the world respond to the coronavirus (COVID-19), we are all feeling a range of emotions. It is important now more than ever to attend to the social and emotional needs of ourselves and others during this time.

The School District of Whitefish Bay School Psychologists assembled social/emotional/mental health resources related to COVID-19 that may offer support to your family. Please find the resources below. Our district COVID-19 webpage has additional resources to help support you during this time. If you find you need more assistance addressing the social/emotional/mental health needs of your child (children), please contact your school psychologist.

Cumberland News and Notes:  Hello Fellow Cumberland Parents!

This year, as we attempt to virtually shower our teachers with warm fuzzy feelings we need your help! First, our hope is that you could pick two or three names from the attached list and send them a note of appreciation. It could simply be an email from you, a photo of a drawing or note from your child, or an email typed from an older Cumberland alum that you have in your home.

-Please don’t include any conference type questions or constructive feedback for VLT in these notes. We don’t want to add to the teacher’s list of emails to respond to, but rather sprinkle their inboxes with notes expressing appreciation for what they have and are doing to help teach our children.

-Please send the emails during Staff Appreciation Week (May 4-8). Our hope is that every staff member will receive at least one note that week.

Secondly, the teachers have each picked a color. If you can, please have your student wear that color for their Monday Google Meet session. Wouldn’t it be fun for the class to see everyone in the same color in honor of their teacher?!

Thank you for all you are doing right now!

District News:

● It’s that time of year again. Time for Grad Grams! And this year we are asking that an extra special effort be made in getting the word out. Our seniors have really had a lot taken away from them this year but we can try and make up for that by selling and making more grad grams than ever before. If you know a Senior or even several, please consider giving them a grad gram. You can order them by clicking here or you can pick up at one of the two pick up/drop off sites. Either way, our graduates love reading their grad grams. Many keep their booklets as keepsakes. Thank you for your help in getting the word out and for helping us reach as many people as possible. Our Seniors deserve a memorable send off!

● May 3-9 is Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week: Families - Please write a "Sidewalk Chalk Message for Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week." Take a picture of the message and email it to [email protected]. Photos will be shared on our District Facebook page. Messages with students in the pictures are welcome also. Thank you!
