NEXT ASSEMBLY
UPCOMING EVENTS
Thursday July 18, 2019
Welcome to Term 3 at Sherbourne. We are now into the sec-
ond semester and term 3 promises to be one of great learning
progress.
Returning from 4 weeks in the UK on Long Service Leave I am
struck by the opportunities, resources and access we enjoy in
Australia. The endorsement of public education in Australia and
particularly Victoria - the Education state, is something to be
proud of – with its strong focus on equity and excellence.
My strong message to both staff and students upon my return is
enjoy your learning, be curious and wondrous about the world
around us, strive to ask and find out “why.” Most of all be grate-
ful for all we take for granted – our family, friends, beautiful
country and community.
I would like to acknowledge the work of Mrs Marcelle Herrick
who took on the acting Principal role during my Long Service
Leave at the end of Term 2.

OVAL UPDATE
There has been a lot of activity over the holidays to the under layers of the oval and the fitness track that winds
around the yard. The spoon drain alongside the junior building and the existing turf courts has been updated,
including the flattening of a developing “lump “ there, the path travelling from the junior to the senior play-
ground has been re done.
Much of the work levelling and re positioning services is difficult to perceive however the project is progressing
steadily despite a few rain interruptions, where excess water has hampered work.
Currently the Senior “Big Adventure playground” is fenced off and out of use. We are very fortunate to have
alternative sufficient adjacent play areas for the children; We are working with the students to maximise their
play space and activities- they have come up with some great negotiated management strategies. Well done
kids!
The timeline of the project has extended to a projected date at the end of August. We will keep you updated!
RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS PROGRAM AT SCHERBOURNE
Sherbourne Primary school has been a partner school in the implementation of the Respectful Relationships
program since 2017. The focus of this initiative is on building respect and equality. It also helps teach our chil-
dren how to build healthy relationships, resilience and confidence.
On Tuesday this week Bridget and Peta from the Department of Education and Training ran a Parent Infor-
mation session to introduce the basic elements of the Department’s Respectful Relationships Program. Twenty-
three parents attended this informative introduction to the program.
A staff professional development session followed – a good refresher for staff. The focus was on our use of
language in the classroom and everyday life. Words have power so use them wisely. This was particularly in
relation to raising consciousness of language which is built upon gender stereotypes. The session left teachers
with plenty of food for thought including consciousness of the images we display at the school, the literature
we share and the use of the physical resources at school. The program develops from Prep year right through
to Year 10. The resources have been a valuable tool to facilitate class discussions and activities about emotions
and feelings, social skills, seeking help and gender and equity at age appropriate levels.
Thanks to our Respectful Relationships coordinator Holly Denholm for organizing this visit.
SHERBOURNE SWIM SCHOOL- THANK YOU AND BEST WISHES
Sandra Bingham who has run Sherbourne Swim School in the school pool for many, many years has an-
nounced the conclusion of the Swim School effective from the end of Term 2. Sandra is an absolute legend in
the Sherbourne community having taught many children and their parents to swim over this time.
We wish Sandra and Rob all the very best for the future and thank them for their enormous contribution to
our community. Enjoy life out of the water Sandra!!!
The other swim school operating from the Sherbourne pool is run by Heather Reilly who has been teaching for
over 20 years in the local area. Heather will run classes on a Saturday and Sunday at the school. Please con-
tact Heather direct on 94354-5804.

ASSEMBLY
At Assembly next Monday we will meet our Semester 2 Junior School Councilors from each class across the
school. Thank you to our Semester 1 JSC reps for the ideas you brought and your terrific reporting to and from
Junior School Council and your class. These students will receive their badges at Assembly – families are most
welcome to attend, 3.00pm in the Hall.
THANK YOU
A big thank you once again to those families who looked after our chickens and our yards over the holiday
break. The wind and rain play some havoc at this time of year – yet we came back to a beautifully cleaned and
safe school yard. Thank you!
2019 PARENT OPINION SURVEY
Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents think of our school. The Parent Opinion Survey is an
annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst a sample of ran-
domly selected parents. It is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of parents’ perceptions of
school climate, student behaviour and student engagement. Our school will use the survey results to help in-
form and direct future school planning and improvement strategies.
Approximately 30 per cent of parents will be invited to participate in this year’s survey. All responses to the sur-
vey are anonymous. This year the Parent Opinion Survey will be conducted from Monday 22rd July to Sunday
11th August.
The survey will be conducted online, only takes 10-15 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any con-
venient time within the fieldwork period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones. The online
survey will be available in a range of languages other than English. The survey results will be reported back to
the school at the end of September.
GRADE 1/2 SWIIMMING WILL COMMENCE NEXT THURSDAY JULY 25
1/2K will swim from 9.15-10.30 followed by 1/2M 10.30 – 11.45am. We are in desperate need of parent helpers
for the program to proceed. Please contact your class teachers if you can assist.
Thank you!

HEALTH/FIRST AID
COLD and FLU SEASON
The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) have advised schools that influenza is increasing
throughout Victoria. To help reduce the spread of cold and flu we share the following advice they have provided
to us:
Encourage students with cold or flu-like symptoms to seek medical attention. Common flu-like symptoms
include a high fever, a cough, a runny nose, loss of appetite, body aches and feeling extremely weak and
tired. Diagnosis should only be made by a medical practitioner.
Any students with colds or flu-like symptoms should limit contact with others and stay at home until their
symptoms have passed.
If a student becomes ill at school with these symptoms, contact the family and arrange to pick up the stu-
dent.
Good general hygiene is the best defence against infection. Encourage students to wash their hands regu-
larly. Ask them to cover their nose and mouth when sneezing and coughing.
HEADLICE
We ask that all families remain vigilant in inspecting regularly and acting and informing quickly in the incidence
of headlice or nits in their child or children’s hair. Students may return to school the day after their hair has
been treated for headlice – it is also important to inform the school so we can alert other families to be on the
lookout. After initial treatment a follow up treatment must be carried out in 7 days to break the cycle of the
lice. This information is always treated confidentially.
Thanks for your help with this.

School Crossing
1.No children or their parents should ever cross the road outside
the correct crossing area.
2.Parents and children must always wait behind the yellow line until
they hear two whistles from the crossing supervisor in attendance.
Then you can cross within the white lines only.
3.Children are never allowed to cross the road whilst riding bikes etc
and should only walk, never run.
4.Children should never bounce a ball when crossing the road.
These are simple rules designed to protect ‘your’ children.
Please always remember, when dropping children off at school, to
respect council parking laws.
They are there to help with all our children’s safety !
The council officers will be coming around, at random times to give
people fines.
Stop, Look, Listen and think.
Have a happy and safe day
