While it’s not the first cornhole event to be played on Fort Leonard Wood, it will be the first indoor event of its type offering cash prizes to the winning teams. “We’re trying to do something a little differently than what’s been done in the past,” said Jeffrey Barrett, Out- door Adventure Center manager, who is helping coordinate the event. The tournament is a joint venture between the OAC, the community center, the Lake of the Ozarks Recreation Area and the Installation Wide Events office. Two-person teams can register for $40 in advance now through Jan. 23, or sign up for $50 at the door. Prizes awarded will be based on participation in the single-elimination tournament. “We’re looking to get a slot of 32 teams, and we’ll pretty much keep going until (the tournament) is com- plete,” Barrett said. “We want people to come out, have a good time with friends and try to win some prizes.” Eli Wilson, FMWR Community Activi- ties manager, said food and beverages will be available for purchase during the tournament, which will be held in Persh- ing Community Center’s ballrooms. “There are two bars in the ballroom, and we will have one of those open, as well as a limited food menu available,” Wilson said. For teams waiting to play, or for those between games, the center will have projectors showing televised sporting events along with a few other, smaller games and activities to pass the time. However, Wilson noted that several games of cornhole will be played simultaneously. “Right now we’re looking at eight to 10 (cornhole) sets running at a time, with four players on each set at a time,” he said. “We’ll do a tournament bracket, almost like a college bracket, where teams will move on until they get to the final.” Wilson said planning for the cornhole tournament began after representatives from PCC, the OAC and LORA recom- mended holding a winter cornhole event due to the sport’s growing popularity and the success of recent tournaments both inside and outside the gate. “Any time we have any kind of event where we’re trying to offer extra activities, we try to set it up, and it always seems to do well,” Wilson said. “This is a joint event between a few different programs. They brought it to me because they wanted to do some- thing indoors during the cold-weather months, and we felt we could use the ballroom space in Pershing effectively.” Advance registration can be completed in person at Pershing Community Center or online at https:// leonardwood.armymwr.com. Whether you prefer your chili mild, spicy or four-alarm hot, the upcoming Polar Meltdown

Chili Cook-Off likely has something for you.

Held annually by the Waynesville-St. Robert Chamber of Commerce, the event challenges teams of cooks to make the tastiest pot of chili con carne. This year’s event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 25 at the

Ark Community and Sports Center in Waynesville.

Admission is $5 per person and free for children ages 4 and younger.

Teams of up to six participants and individual entries, which consist of a cook and up to two assistants, will com-pete for a number of awards and prizes as they prepare their recipes on site.

All teams have to abide by rules set down by the chamber and the Pulaski County Health Department, which in-spects each booth during the competition.

In addition to their chili, teams are also judged on their presentation and their booth, which typically follows a theme. Many teams opt to dress in cos-tumes, and some even perform short skits for the judges and the audience.

Awards will be presented to the top three teams in two categories: People’s Choice and Show-manship. Audience mem-bers determine the Peo-ple’s Choice winner by placing money in jars in their favorite booth or booths.

The Showman-ship Award will be chosen by a panel of judges, who will consider each entry’s overall presentation of theme, demonstrations and performances.

The Judges’ Choice Grand Champion Chili Award will be presented to the

entry with the best chili, while the Best of Show winner will be de-termined by a combination of the

judges’ scores for chili and show-manship.

During the event, live music will be performed by Tony Ray, who has

played at several previ-ous events.

Tickets for the Polar Meltdown Chili Cook-Off

are on sale at the chamber office, located on the lower level

of the St. Robert Visitor Center at 137 St. Robert Blvd.

For more information, contact the chamber office at 573.336.5121 or email [email protected].

Parkview. Several Tigers hit key free throws, and a key basket by Hunter O’Neil kept Waynesville in the lead to secure the win at the buzzer.

Lewis led Waynesville in scor-ing with 12 points, followed by O’Neil with 11 and Smith with 10 points.

“We were in another tight game. I think that is good for our guys,” said Chris Pilz, WHS head coach.

Pilz said the Tigers faced a strong Parkview team to begin confer-ence play.

“Parkview is a very good team led by two-time All-Ozark Conference selection Dan-tae Taylor. Taylor was good tonight. We were able to slow him up just enough. Our guys prepared well at practice yesterday and today in our walk through,” Pilz said. “I really liked our effort on defense tonight. AJ Martin and Shen Butler-Lawson had tremen-dous effort on that end tonight.”

Up next: The Tigers (7-4) play host to the Jefferson City Jays (6-6) at

7 p.m. Friday in the WHS gym.In other WHS sports:

Girls’ basketballThe WHS girls’ Lady Tigers var-

points for Waynesville. The Lady Tigers “gave

a great effort against the No. 1 team in Missouri Class 5, (who are also ranked) 25th in the nation,” said Brit-tany Matlock, WHS head coach. “We will continue to work hard and worry about what we can control. In due time, those efforts will pay off.”

Q: It seems like Patricia Arquette is always winning acting awards. I used to watch her on the TV show “Medium,” and I don’t recall her winning back then. -- B.C.

A: Arquette just added another Golden Globe tro-phy to her collection with a Best Supporting Actress win for “The Act.” She won an Emmy for the same role last year. Like much of her re-cent work, “The Act,” which is available on Hulu, is based on a tragic true story.

Arquette won a Best Ac-tress Golden Globe last year for playing a prison guard who fell in love with an inmate and helped him be-come a fugitive in “Escape at Dannemora.” She did indeed win an Emmy for her hit

show “Medium,” which was based on real-life psychic Allison Dubois. Arquette also was awarded an Oscar for supporting actress for the movie “Boyhood,” which was filmed over a 12-year period.

Arquette can always be counted on for a lengthy speech in which she hopes to raise awareness and spark activism. At this year’s Golden Globes, she talked about the devastating fires in Australia.

***Q: Is it true there is going

to be another Superman series? If so, who will play the lead role? -Ð P.I.

A: Between Marvel, DC Comics and Star Wars, I don’t think we’ll ever run out of genre TV shows. “Super-man & Lois” is next on the assembly line. It’s a spinoff of “Supergirl” and will be

brought to you by the execu-tive producer of “The Flash.” However, it’s uncertain at this time if it will be a multi-

episode series, as it’s being billed as a “stand-alone pilot” on the CW network. Perhaps if it does well, it’ll

get the greenlight for more episodes or movies.

Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch will be reprising their roles of Superman and Lois Lane. They’ve played the duo in the above-mentioned shows as well as in “Arrow” and “Batwoman.” This is a time for them to shine as the leads, and as long as the writing and acting are good, fans will tune in.

In this incarnation, according to Deadline.com, they’ll “deal with all the stress, pressures and complexities that come with being working parents in today’s society.” No air date has been announced, but it’s currently in production.

***Q: When is the final

season of “Lucifer” going to be on Netflix? I’m sad it’s the last one but really eager

to see how it all pans out. -- R.M.

A: The fifth and final sea-son of the cult hit “Lucifer” has no official air date yet, but a big announcement was made recently about a highly important character, God, who will be played by Den-nis Haysbert.

You might remember Haysbert (who also voices the Allstate insurance com-mercials) as the president of the United States in the FOX series “24.”

JUST THE FACTS2020 Nissan Titan

The half-ton pickup market is made up of giants that sell deep into six-figure volumes every year and command intensely devout loyalty. Bit players trying to enter the market have to fight it out for a small, albeit lucrative slice. To stand out, you need to be bold and offer value with unique touches. To that end, the new 2020 Nissan Titan of-fers more presence and a number of technological improvements on its spec sheet. Compared to the segment leaders, however, these changes amount to little more than a reminder that Nissan’s full-sizer still exists.

Dear Car Talk: Why don’t cars come with brake lights on the front end as well as the back end? Seems like that could prevent a lot of accidents at four-way stops, at cross-walks and at streets with left turn lanes. -- Mary It’s an interesting idea, Mary. It would provide useful in-formation at four-way stops. It would let pedestrians in crosswalks know that a driver sees you and is slow-ing down. And it would let an oncoming motorist know that a person making a left turn sees them coming and is waiting before crossing traffic. There are two poten-tial downsides I can think of. One is that if you put brake lights on the front of the car, at night, you wouldn’t know if a car was coming or go-ing. And if you think drunk drivers are a menace now ... Imagine seeing headlights and brake lights at night and not knowing if it’s two cars or the same car. Now imag-ine that in the rain. I sup-pose you could address that by using a unique signal -- something other than a red light. But that leads to the second potential drawback: Information overload. Driv-ers are already processing a lot of information when they drive -- assuming they’re paying attention. And right now, the signals from other cars are pretty straightfor-ward. You’ve got headlights, which means the car is com-ing at you, taillights, which means the car is traveling in the same direction you are, brake lights for stopping, and turn signals. Add an-other light signal to read and it’s possible you could con-fuse people. Maybe not. But rest assured that a change like this would not be made without years’ worth of study and research by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Department of Trans-portation. They’re loathe to make changes like this un-less they have proven, real-world value. And no nega-tive effects on safety. The other factor is that, increas-ingly, we’re giving up on hu-mans and turning over the decision-making to comput-ers. The emphasis right now, rather than adding informa-tion for humans to process, is to take human brains out of the equation. That’s why there are now safety sys-tems that detect pedestri-ans and stop the car if the driver doesn’t. And systems that stop the car if you pull out from a four-way stop and are heading toward an-other vehicle. In the not too distant future, cars will com-municate directly with each other, letting a nearby car know its proximity, direction and speed. And automatical-ly transmitting an obscene gesture on your behalf when another car’s computer cuts off your car’s computer. Isn’t life grand?

5 vehicle upgrades worth the investment

(BPT) - Buying a car, truck or SUV is a big investment. To protect that investment, most people make sure they keep up with the necessary main-tenance and safety recalls, as well as getting sufficient in-surance coverage. However, there’s a lot more you can do to protect the investment in your car, to help it last longer and to improve performance, safety and even your enjoy-ment of the vehicle over the years you’ll be driving it. Here are some of the top aftermar-ket parts and accessories to consider upgrading for en-hancing your vehicle’s perfor-mance, safety and longevity.

1. Brakes

One of the best - and most cost-effective - ways to im-prove your vehicle’s safety is to be sure that your brakes are always in top condition. Whether you go all out for top upgrades like a high-quality brake pad setup and

steel braided brake lines, or if you just invest in good qual-ity performance brake pads, you’ll have more peace of mind if you know you’ve got the best stopping power that you can afford for your vehicle.

2. Tires

Because reliable tires are one of the most crucial elements for auto safety - especially since they are the only parts of a vehicle that touch the road - it’s a good idea to in-vest in high-quality tires that will not only last longer, but that provide consistently bet-ter handling in a variety of extreme weather conditions, from rain and wet roads to ice and snow. For example, Yoko-hama Tire’s latest all-season premium touring tire, the new AVID Ascend LX, is designed for passenger cars, minivans and crossovers, and offers su-perior wet traction, depend-able winter traction and longer tread life, which is backed by an 85,000-mile limited tread life warranty. Top-notch tires will not only offer better safety for you and your passengers, but will also improve fuel ef-ficiency and provide a qui-eter, smoother ride, no matter what the road conditions are.

3. Fog lights

Especially if you live in an area

that experiences dense fog or heavy snowfall, or if you do a lot of driving at night or early in the morning, high-quality fog lights can really improve your safety and visibility. This is a must-have if you live in certain climates, or if you drive frequently in remote or rural areas. Aftermarket fog lights are available in a variety of sizes and shapes to suit a wide range of vehicles, so be sure you are selecting a fog light ap-propriate for your car or truck. This is one upgrade that’s easy to take care of yourself.

4. Spark plugs

If your vehicle is experiencing intermittent difficulty start-ing up or accelerating, or if you notice occasional misfires or feel your engine is idling roughly, replacing your spark plugs can make a big differ-ence. Fuel economy can also be improved by replacing old-er spark plugs. You can choose between four different types

of spark plugs - iridium core, copper core, platinum and double-platinum core. Your best bet when replacing spark plugs is to check your vehicle’s owner’s manual to be sure you’re choosing the best type for your particular car or truck.

5. Wiper blades

Especially if you live in an area that experiences weather ex-tremes, finding the best qual-ity all-weather or heavy-duty wiper blades can make your driving experience much saf-er, whatever the season. You also want to make sure that you change the wiper blades frequently to ensure they’re working effectively, usually ev-ery six months to a year. If you notice streaking or other is-sues with visibility, it’s time to change them. It’s best to make sure that any wiper blades you get are the correct type and size for your vehicle’s wind-shield. Depending on your budget and specific concerns, choosing aftermarket parts or accessories to upgrade on your vehicle - even minor ones - will be likely to enhance yoursafety as well as the car’s per-formance over time. Prioritizewhat is the most importantfactor to you in choosingupgrades or enhancementsthat make sense foryour vehicle.
