Do Now…

Read the following excerpt from BNB; “There was a gray gas can in one corner next to a bunch of gray rakes and a pile of gray rags, and a gray tire next to some gray fishing poles” (p. 21-22). Select ONE tone from the chart that supports what the author was trying to convey. Prepare to discuss this in Starbucks.

Everything in the shed was a shade of gray.

It makes the reader realize that the shed must be very dark because everything looks gray. The way the word has been used emphasizes that the situation is bleak.

Cindy was such a mule. We could not get her to change her mind.

The metaphor “Cindy was such a mule” compares Cindy to a mule because she was __________, which emphasizes to everyone that the situation is ______________.

Independent Work…Group 1: Analyze the following excerpt and complete the chart, “The only thing I could hear was my own breath. It was so loud that it sounded like there were six scared people locked up in the shed. I closed my eyes and thought real hard about making my breathing slow down. Pretty soon it sounded like the five other breathers in the shed had left” (p. 21). Then read chapter 4. Identify 1 more example of figurative language and complete the chart. Group 2: Analyze the following excerpt and complete the chart, “When they were digging around in Bug’s ears with the tweezers you’d’ve thought they were pulling his legs off, not some cockroach’s” (p. 23). Then read chapter 4 identifying 2 examples of figurative language. Develop a QW discussing how this affects the tone (refer to “Tone” chart) of the story, so far. Group 3: Analyze the following excerpt and in QW format discuss what this reveals to the reader about Bud, so far. “It sounded like I’d turned on a buzz saw in the shed. All of a sudden it felt like someone had stuck a red-hot nail right into my left cheek” (p. 28). Read chapter 4. Identify a few examples of figurative language within the chapter. Determine the overall tone that the author achieved with the use of figurative language. Develop a QW defending your thoughts.
