Teamwork skills were organised prior to the students sitting down together for dinner. The sleepover assists students in preparing for camp in Year 3, developing their independence and resilience skills. For some children this is the first time they have slept overnight away from their families. Thank you to the Year 1/2 teachers and Mrs Frieda Apostolopoulos in particular for organising the late stay/sleep over. CHANNEL 10 APPERANCE Thank you to Carolyn Datson for organising the visit from Mike Larkin and Channel 10 on Monday night. It was such a great opportunity to showcase our school and the upcoming events. How brilliant were our children! They looked fantastic, behaved beautifully and were great representatives of our school. Mike was very giving of his time allowing for questions and just hanging out with the kids and community. His great sense of humour had everyone laughing. Thank you to everyone who came along and in particular to the students.

SCHOOL’S 50 B’DAY CELEBRATION AND FETE WOW – what a week! We started with a high with our special 60s/70s dress up day and special assembly. Thank you to Liz Jeffrey’s for being our special guest sharing life at MWHPS in the early days and Mrs Sandra Douglas for educating our students about life in the 60s/70s. We had a visit by Mike Larkan and will be finishing the week celebrating our 50 B’day in style. It has been an exceptionally busy week with much preparation for this weekend’s celebration. Claire Furlong and Jane Gough have been printing, laminating and preparing the display boards highlighting our school’s journey over the past 50 years. Leonie Griffin has practically lived all week at the school, ensuring all arrangements have been coordinated and organised. A mammoth task. Then there are the background workers - the parent volunteers and the MWHPS staff who have dedicated their time organising stalls and assisting with preparations. A huge team effort. I would like to recognise the main key committee members for their astonishing efforts.

- Leonie Griffin (Fete manager extraordinaire) - Airlie Anderson-Weir (financial control, raffle organiser) - Deb Stathakaros (Fete Assistant Manager) - Jane Gough (50 year booklet and Commemorative Event) - Claire Furlong (Commemorative Display)

CURRICULUM DAY Just a reminder that students will not be required on Monday 6 Nov. We will be having our last curriculum day for the year. Staff will be undertaking professional learning in mathematics further developing consistent practices and approaches. We will also be looking at how we engage and challenge students in mathematics. BUILDING WORKS – 2 MILLION DOLLAR GRANT Over the September holidays a working group (consisting of staff and our School Council President) met with DET (Department of Education and Training) representatives and architects to discuss plans for the rebuild of Building C. Over the last couple of weeks, we have met once again to look at possible concept drawings. After consultation with the committee and additional staff, we have provided a final wants and needs list. Once complete, the final concept drawing will be included in upcoming newsletter editions. In the meantime, storage containers will be delivered to school and in approximately four weeks, the portables will arrive. The current year 1/2 classes will move into the portables in preparation for works over the xmas break. We will need to box up items in Building C, ASAP. Much to do! Please let me know if you are able to assist with boxing and moving of items. WORLD TEACHERS DAY Due to our big event this weekend, we have postponed World Teachers Day till Friday Nov 3. Curriculum News:

Our first prep transition was last Friday. It was great to see our new preps enjoying our wonderful prep room. They did some reading, maths and games. They were all very enthusiastic and had such a great time. Thank you to all the staff who made it such a success. Our next session is Friday Nov 3 at 2pm.

Also looking forward to wonderful fete on Saturday! See you there! Physical Education NOTES:

Thanks for supporting Walk To School! Only a few weeks left so leave the car behind (or

park a little further away) and walk to school.

Thank for supporting Mike Larkin’s visit. As you can see from the

photo, Mike loved looking at our tree in the prep room. All the

students were fantastic and it was such a great way to promote our

school.

“Flavours of the World” Sweet Stall

We need your help!

The Parents Association is holding a sweet stall at our fete and we would love it if all our families could assist us in making it a success! The fete is a celebration for all families at our school, so if you are able to make a traditional dish reflective of your family’s heritage that would be great. Next week each family will receive 2 plastic plates & bags with instructions & an ingredient list. Ideas for things to make..... Cakes, slices, biscuits, sweets, ideally something from your traditional culture or homeland to go with our "flavours of the world" theme. Please support your school by making a couple of items, the cake stall is a great fundraiser. Any queries to Alison 0411 653 541 or krishna 0438 550 178

Extend OSHC at Mount Waverley Heights Primary

School

Hi everyone!

Last week at Extend we had a very creative week. We made blindfold portraits where the children wore blindfolds and try to paint different people and objects. They really enjoyed it

and had a good laugh when they took to blindfolds off to see what they had created. We also made peg puppets this week which was a huge hit. The children either used pegs or paddle

pop sticks, and later used them in our extend theatre to create puppet show which they invited the other children to participate and watch. We made zucchini slice this week which the children loved, and there was even a request to make it every week!! On Friday we got

our lab coats out and made lemon volcanoes. We used the lemons natural acidity and mixed it with food colouring and bicarb soda, to create a bubbling, foaming lemon volcano. The

children then loved being able to experiment and see what they could use to keep the volcano erupting.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the Fate this Saturday, come down and say hello to

us at our stall.

Friendly Reminder: Term 4 means hats and sunscreen needs to be worn to play outside. Children who don't

have a hat will not be able to play outside. If you have a spare hat you want to leave at the service for your child please feel free to drop it off and we have a had tub we can store it in.

Coming up next week:

Monday October 30: Hama beads, Revenge Tuesday October 31: Sports Clinic

Wednesday November 1: Cooking: Blueberry muffins, Rounders Thursday November 2: Creative painting, Balloon games

Some of the Food and Drink available at the Fete We cater to meat lovers and vegetarians, and have enough variety to satisfy everyone. Our food stalls will

all be operating from 3pm until 8pm (unless noted differently below) so bring the family for afternoon tea

and dinner

Café Thanks to the lovely people at Berengarra, we have the coolest coffee

and the best baristas. The coffee will be delicious, come and enjoy a cup or two.

Tea, coffee and hot chocolate will be served with some sweet treats.

You can have a seat away from the hustle and bustle of the fete, compare the

goodies you have bought and won, refresh with a lovely cuppa and go out and do it

all again. The café will be operating from 1.30pm.

Decorate your own cupcakes It may get a little messy but that will just add to the fun! It is simple – buy a cupcake, add your own

toppings…from icing to sprinkles…the range will be amazing so let your imagination go nuts! The best

bit? Once you have decorated it you get to eat it!

BBQ Due to the outstanding success of the egg n’ bacon rolls at our last couple of

events they are making an appearance at the fete, but strictly limited to early birds, so don’t

miss out!

The BBQers will be serving up delicious sausages and we’ll throw in bread, sauce, mustard

and onions – we’ll even give you a napkin too!

But that’s not all, delicious hamburgers (including a vegetarian option) will be flipped on the grill as well.

Thanks to the local Rotary team for helping us out on the grill!

Woodfired Pizza

Woodstack Fire and Food will be offering wood fired pizza with a range of toppings to

satisfy your pizza craving. Just ask our Year 3 and 4 students how good these pizzas are!

Greek Taste Temptations

Let’s Meat Up will be providing a tempting fare – Souvlaki and those thick hot chips we all

wish we could make! The boys at Let’s Meat Up Greek Grill will be cooking up a storm on

their chargrill with choices of meat such as lamb, chicken or pork belly. Good luck deciding

which you prefer, ‘cos it will be a little bit like eeni meeni minie mo!!!

Tantalising Thai

For something a little different try the range of Thai food that will be available at Thai

Grandma’s Kitchen. Spring rolls to noodles…and maybe a few international dishes

thrown in!

**Soft drinks, juice and water will be available at the BBQ stall and the Popcorn stall
