Presenta on Day 2016 Thursday 8 December is our annual Presenta on Day. Star ng at 9.30am in the Hall we will be acknowledging a number of our students for their wonderful achievements in 2016. 

Like other years we will acknowledge the Ci zenship Award, School Dux and our four Captains for 2017. However, in 2016 we will also be announcing; 

2 Academic Achievements and 2 Merit Awards for each K‐2 class; 

2 Academic Achievements and 4 Merit Awards for each 3‐6 class; and 

Various spor ng carnivals and crea ve awards 

Parents will be no fied next week by mail if their child is to receive an award.  

We look forward to this years Presenta on Day and warmly invite all our community to a end. The band and choir will also be performing at this special presenta on. 

New Signage Visitors driving or walking past our school will now be greeted with our new school sign, complete with our three core values of Respec ul, Responsible and Caring.  

There is also new signage in the Hall for our students to remember our  acknowledgement of country, the school pledge and the Na onal Anthem.  

Thanks to Signpac for these wonderful signs around the school. 

 

Schools Spectacular Next Wednesday to Saturday I will be working with thousands of talented students from across the state at this years Schools Spectacular. I hope next year we can include some of our students in this fantas c experience.

My Ministers Award On Wednesday the 2nd of November, I received a Ministers Award for Russian that was presented at the University of NSW. The awards ceremony was held in a huge auditorium with well over 100 people there.  Many children from different cultures came to receive their awards. All students wore their na onal costume as did I. I wore a red na onal Russian dress with a big headpiece as you can see in the picture. Only about 150 children received a Ministers Award each year so I am very proud myself for winning such an important cer ficate. Wri en by Sofia Kats 

           

 1H News Our class loves par cipa ng in literacy ac vi es. We especially enjoy playing Word Building Dominoes, Silly Sentences and Sounds in Space! These resources are extremely versa le and keep all the children engaged and on task. The students are constantly learning and being challenged in a fun environment.  

    

  

General Informa on  SRC Environmental Tip As part of our recent ini a ve in the school to make our school and local environments more sustainable we would like to offer a few  ps in regards to conserving energy at home.  Not only does conserving energy help the environment but your wallet will benefit too.  Below are a few  ps and tricks to consider and help in reducing your carbon foot  How to Conserve Energy  

if you own your own home, consider installing insula on or inves ng in a solar hot water heater.  

if you need to use air condi oning, avoid turning the thermostat on to very cold se ngs. When the system works harder, it uses significantly more energy.  

buy green power. Most energy suppliers give you the op on of sourcing a propor on of your energy from re‐newable sources.  

check the star ra ngs on appliances. You will save money as well as energy 

switch off fridges that are not in use. 

turn off power points at the source. 

use cold water in the washing machine.  

turn off lights when not in use.  

Library News Stocktake 

During weeks 6 and 7 children will be visi ng the library to re‐turn their borrowed books and for their library lessons. For the rest of the year there will be no borrowing as all books are be‐ing collected for our annual stocktake. This involves loca ng books that are currently marked as missing and returning them to the correct loca on in the library.

When you really “lose” yourself in a book enter it, swim amongst the words and breathe its water. What a feeling,   complete submersion. 

This  is  the  feeling we  are  embracing  for  the  library  entrance. Over  the next  couple of days keep a close eye and no ce  the magical transforma on this space is experiencing.

Posi ve Behaviour for Learning Throughout the week, teachers have been focusing on how to be RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE and CARING learners in our   toilet areas. Our toilet areas include the main toilet block in the top playground as well as toilets next to classrooms and in the Hall.  

Teachers have been explicitly teaching expected behaviours and are already no cing a visible improvement. Below is our Expec‐ta on Matrix with behaviours which are expected in ALL se ngs around the school.  

You will also see the expected behaviours for our toilet areas. The PBL ac on team, and staff alike are really excited about the implementa on of PBL and the posi ve impacts it’s having our school!

PSSA Last Week  

PSSA This Week The PSSA compe on con nues  tomorrow. As always we  look forward  to  seeing  many  parents,  carers  and  friends  at  our games suppor ng our teams.  

Junior TBall Report       On Friday 11th November the Junior TBall team played a tough game against Gardeners Road. We played at Heffron Park and in the first  innings Gardeners Road got almost all of their players home, taking a convincing lead.  

Maroubra  came  back  strong,  showing  excellent  ba ng  and fielding,  resul ng  in us narrowly winning  the game 17‐16. We had  a minute of  silence  at  11am  to  remember  those  soldiers who fought in World War I.

BEEhaving in our garden 2/3C has been helping the garden environment by making bee hotels for the solitary bees that will help pollinate and protect our na ve plants.   

On the first week, Sandra (James N’s mum) the person who started the bee hotels, showed us a slide show about the soli‐tary bees and the bee hotels. A er that she showed us some other insect/arachnid bugs that are in the garden like the pray‐ing man s, aphids, wasps and spiders. She also told us if they’re friend or foe.  

On the second week we went bug hun ng and we used tons of stuff like: bug suckers, shake down mats, leaf li er and micro‐scopes. We found: lady bugs, aphids, spiders, a dragonfly and a prey man s and many more creatures. Sienna even had a bu erfly land on her finger that wouldn’t leave. It even came back to our classroom!   

We s ll have a lot of things to say but we can’t fit everything so we will just say that we’re having a great  me and we are look‐ing forward to the next few weeks where we hope some       solitary bees will find a new home!

3/4J have been studying the process of erosion as part of our Science Unit. Today they did some great experiments. Here are their findings. Aim: How water   shapes the landscape by physically eroding the rock. Experiment 1 findings We put one end of the tray on a brick and we joined it to another tray. We had to make sure there was a downward slope. We placed a “mountain” of soil in the first tray. Then we slowly dripped water on to the “mountain”. We saw the soil slowly crumble and taking a new shape. We were able to show that this happened because the soil eroded when the water hit it. Experiment 2 findings Results from  bo le 1:  When we poured the water into the bo le containing soil, the water that dripped from the bo le was very dirty. The soil was very dry so when the water was poured into it, the water eroded the soil and washed out the remains rather quickly. Results for bo le 2  When we poured the water into the bo le with grass planted in the soil, the roots held the soil together. The water pouring out  remained clean . The roots slowed the process of erosion. Results for bo le 3  When we poured the water into the bo le with 

leaves, bark and s cks the water came out rela‐

vely  clean. it had some very fine soil fragments 

in the tray collec ng the water.

Garden There will no lunch me garden club for Term 4 as produce is ready for harvest and will be delivered to the students who par‐cipated. 

Thursday Garden Classes and their projects are: 

KV ‐ more tyre planters for seasonal flowers and insect habitat 

1S ‐ no dig garden with na ve perennials to provide habitat and foraging for na ve bees. Six different species of bees have been sighted in the garden, which is exci ng! 

2/3C ‐ Na ve Solitary Bee Hotel‐ donated from Weleda who joined up with 

Stephanie Alexander program and offered flat pack hotels to schools

3/4M - Bug Hotel - to be placed in lower growing area and to be surrounded by seasonal and perennial flowering plants 

5/6G ‐ 'The Bug Files' ‐ inves ga ng and researching the various in‐sects living in the garden and producing an informa on page on their cho‐sen insect. 

A Produce Stall is proposed for the last week of term, depend‐ing on when potatoes are ready. We’ll let you know.

Canteen In the past month, our Canteen Commi ee and Mr Ackerman met with the new Canteen Operator to review successes and lessons from the first few terms of their opera on, and to dis‐cuss changes and improvements for the future. The mee ng was most frui ul (hah!) and the resul ng improvements will be implemented to both the menu and opera ons. We will no fy you of these details in the near future. If you wish to contact our Canteen Commi ee Coordinator, Stephanie Berglin, you can do so through the P&C email address above.  

Fundraising Events & Finances The P&C has held some fantas c, successful fundraising events over the last few months. Both the Golf Day and the School Disco aptly fulfilled the dual goals of bringing people together and raising valuable funds for MBPS. In doing so, they embod‐ied two of the primary purposes of the P&C – strengthening the community and suppor ng the school. 

The income from these events has put us in a healthy financial posi on to make another significant contribu on towards the school’s educa onal facili es and infrastructure. Over the next month or so, we will be working with the school to determine how and where we can best allocate those funds. 

2017 Fundraising Strategies In October, the P&C convened a special mee ng to discuss how we approach fundraising, as well as our goals and strategies for next year. Thanks to all who came and contributed. 

From that, we have dra ed a fundraising and event calendar for next year, working with the school to ensure coordina on of  ming, resources and goals. 

This is always a work in progress and we invite input of ideas and par cipa on from all (via P&C email address above).
