Simplify: 3ab + 5a – (ab – 4ab)

AA.13 – Add and subtract monomials and polynomials

1st: The ( ) is confusing. Let me get rid of it first.

2nd: I use different shapes to show if they are like or unlike terms

3rd: I want to use the Commutative property to solve problem.

the problem Simplify: 3ab + 5a – (ab – 4ab) is the same as 6ab + 5a

[Take-away] Richard was able to solve this problem successfully b/c:

(a) used 2 math properties he found in book. (b) used shapes as a visual aid
