Sandra Hollins (D, District 23, North Salt Lake) and Gina Salazar worked together on an outreach team for Volunteers of America. Rep. Hollins is a Homeless Out- reach Team Supervisor. “Sandra was my boss,” Salazar says. “We would go out on the streets with Phil Taylor, who is head of the 4th Street Clinic Medical Outreach Team. He was looking for homeless people who needed medical attention. We were looking for young people who were at risk of becoming involved in sex trafficking.” Rep. Hollins says her team would also go out and work in the homeless shelters. “Down around the shelters we would often notice young girls hanging out,” she adds. “When we talked to them we found that some of them were homeless and some were not. But they were there because the homeless men at the shelter played to their low self-esteem and gave them attention. That meant they were at risk for whatever activities were going on. And lem is underreported because victims are often too afraid to seek help. But some still try to reach out. Between the end of December of 2007 and June 30, 2015, the Center has received 417 contacts originating in or referencing Utah. Those contacts resulted in 73 cases involving 99 victims. In all of 2012, the Center received only 42 contacts which resulted in 12 cases.
