Principal’s Message
SAS Staff Recognition Week
This week is School Administrative and Support Staff Recognition
Week and the perfect time to reflect on and acknowledge the valuable
contributions that our School Administrative and Support Staff make
within our school community. At Thurgoona Public School our SAS
Staff work in the office, the library, in the school grounds and in
classroom settings. These staff have various skills, professional
knowledge and interests that support them in their roles. I am grateful
for the dedication and commitment of the SAS staff at Thurgoona
Public School.
2020 Enrolments
If you are intending to enrol a student in 2020 please contact the school office. A number of transition to
school activities are planned for the 2020 Kindergarten students and we would like to ensure that all
families are aware of these activities. Parents are also invited to school tours and an information evening.
These opportunities will assist families and students in becoming familiar with our school.
P&C Student Disco
The Thurgoona Public School P&C are organising a disco for the students on Thursday, 12 September. This is an exciting social event for students and a positive fundraising event for the P&C. If you are
available to assist the P&C with this fundraising event please contact a P&C member or notify the school office.

NAPLAN online for Years 3 and 5 - Later this term schools across NSW will be participating in the
NAPLAN Online school readiness tests. The school readiness tests are designed to help schools assess
their technical and administrative readiness in a ‘dress rehearsal’ for the transition from pen and paper to
online testing. It will also allow students to become more familiar with the NAPLAN Online test format.
The readiness tests are not an assessment of student ability and there will be no reporting of test results.
Training is currently underway to support schools to deliver the school readiness test.
Our Year 3 and Year 5 students will undertake the school readiness test during Week 8 this term, 9 Sep-
tember to 13 September. There are two tests: an Omnibus test (including questions from domains of read-
ing, conventions of language and numeracy) and a writing test. Year 3 will only sit the Omnibus test. A
final decision about when Thurgoona Public School will transition to NAPLAN Online will be made after the
school readiness test.
Social Media Guidelines for families - We kindly request that when taking photos or videos at school
related activities, parents/carers be mindful to capture their own child(ren) only. Parents/carers need to be
mindful of the information they are publishing regarding the identity of a child that is not their own. Parents/
carers should only publish online or otherwise, photographs or video footage of a child if they have re-
ceived permission from the child’s parent or guardian. More information about online privacy can be ob-
tained from the Australian Government’s eSafety office (www. esafety.gov.au).
This week’s quote: “Education is not solely about earning a great living. It means living a great life”.

Shining a light on K-2
Reading
Reading is a vital skill that impacts a student’s learning across all areas of the curriculum. At school your
child is taught how to read with fluency, accuracy and understanding, through explicit instruction and
small group conferencing. During conferencing, teachers notice what behaviours and strategies are
being used when reading, then they give students feedback and new learning goals to help them
improve.
How can parents help at home?
Positive daily home reading habits are vital to help support your child ’s confidence and reading success.
Regular home reading practices give students the opportunity to practise their learning goals and to help
build positive relationships between home and school.
Another important aspect of home reading is children having the opportunity to listen to adults (or older
siblings) reading aloud. Reading aloud helps students to develop sustained attention, listening skills and
builds their vocabulary.
Vocabulary development is improved when we locate and find the meaning of new words. When you are
reading aloud to your child and you come across new words, pause and ask your child what they think it
might mean. Sometimes you may need to read the whole sentence or paragraph so they can have a
guess after hearing the word in context. If your child is unsure, provide the definition of the word. A fun
activity is to also think about and discuss other words that have a similar meaning to the word you have
just discovered.
Children also benefit from hearing the same stories a number of times as this repeatedly exposes them
to new vocabulary and strengthens their ability to retain the meanings of words.
This is one of the reading strategy prompts we use in K-2. Fancy Nancy is
the reading strategy for:
locating new and interesting words
finding the meaning of these words
using the words in our speaking and writing.
Happy home reading, building your child’s vocabulary!

Attention Year 3 parents,

Term 3 sport for Year 3 will be held each

term. If you have any questions or queries
please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s
teacher.
Thank you!
Year 3 Camp – We’re going to The Great Aussie Holiday Park!
Not long to wait now (only 4 weeks in fact) until we head off on the bus to The Great Aussie Holiday
Park!
We are all so very excited about the many fun activities we will enjoy and the great times we will have
with each other.
We are, however, aware that this may be the first overnight camp experience for your child, so please
take the time to talk to your child about it. They may have concerns about camp but try to emphasise the
positives and all of the fun they will have! Explore options and coping strategies they may use should
they have any anxieties (i.e. home sickness) and make a concerted effort to emphasise that they can
overcome any obstacles they may face if they are resilient.
Further suggestions include sleep overs at friends, other relatives or family members ’ houses to support
and assist in preparing your child and their night away from their immediate loved ones.
Below is the link for The Great Aussie Holiday Park, if you would like to have a look at the camp facilities.

Keep an eye out for further information regarding camp!

Canteen News Recently, we have had several students
forgetting to put their lunch orders in the red
canteen box before class starts. They are
then wanting their orders filled at first break,
which often leads to disappointment
because our volunteers are unable to
prepare numerous meals, as well as serve
other students during this timeframe.
Please remind your child to put their lunch
order in the red canteen box located in the
office before school commences.
