    APPLESTHROUGH THE AGES

Discover the history of howapples were developed forspeci c purposes like baking, cider, and storage and keepingqualities, a most importantfactor during those long, hardColonial winters. Using old-fashioned sleuthing methods,Dan Bussey has spent over 30years tracking and researchingmore than 17,000 applevarieties. Dan’s research haseven led to the rediscoveryof several varieties that wereonce thought to have beenlost, but were actually growinglocally in northeast Iowa.Dan is the orchard managerat Seed Savers Exchange inDecorah and an apple historianwith his own personal orchardwhich features more than 250varieties. Dan is scheduled topresent his adventures anddiscoveries in ‘Apples through

    the Ages’.

    QUILTING AND QUILTS OFVALOR

The Northeast Iowa QuiltGuild, in association withQuilts of Valor, an organizationthat crafts quilts and awardsthem to American Veterans,is scheduled to present a quiltSunday at 12:45 p.m., justbefore the Civil War Battlere-enactment. In ColonialAmerica, where fabric was rareand precious, parts of blanketswould be patched together orsmall scraps would be patchedonto larger pieces to prolongthe life of the blanket and tocreate pieces large enoughto cover beds, doorways andwindows. The patchwork quiltwas strictly utilitarian and theterm patchwork is consideredtruly American. With prosperityand the availability of fabric, appliqué quilts began to gainin popularity. These quilts hadtime and materials lavishedon them and developed intointricate patterns with speci cnames. These quilts were

crafted for show or to becherished as family heirlooms.
