This past month has been a whirlwind of excitement and uncertainty for me personally. It started with an adventurous vacation and then lead to my father having open heart surgery. I have definitely experienced a broad spectrum of emotions. Needless to say,

getting this issue completed and out to you was definitely a challenge this month.

The vacation was wonderful and well worth the time....I’ve never taken a vacation of that magnitude and need to do so again. My dad’s surgery went well and he is recovering - thank you for all of the prayers sent up for him. Now it’s back to work.

Even though this issue was a great challenge and is a little later than usual, I hope that you enjoy the feature surrounding the second leg of the Triple Crown. The photos taken by Steve Heuertz give a more personal and close-up view of what it would have been like to be there in person. We hope you enjoy. Watch for more awesome pictures and a story surrounding the Belmont in next month’s issue.

Be sure to check out the IBRA Nationals Information in the IBRA News Section and find out why the kids of IJRA love rodeo in the IJRA News Section.

Until next month....I’ll ask that you take time for yourself once in a while, hug those that you love and be sure to tell them! .....and please remember to count your blessings on horseback!

God Bless and Ride Safe,Christa Conway

Training a Horse To Use A Hot WalkerannemareaPosted 2013-06-20 5:15 PM (#6763490) Location: Iowa, LAJust got a 60 ft walker and I need some tips on training my ponies to use it safely. I’ve got some of those tie rings that I could at-tach to the leads that came with it.

Turn3NGo06Extreme Veteran Posts: 547It depends on the horse, but I always walked a lap or two with them until they got the hang of it. Some of the race horses never got used to it though, they learned that they could make it go fast by running on it! But to cure that you’d walk and hold on to one of the empty ties so they couldn’t run. Then some of them learned they could make it stop I love hot walkers though.

annemareaWell, two of my three walk like paw paws! Lol So, I’m sure I’ll have more problems keeping them going! But one of mine likes to set back when he gets scared.

Yearlyboon Posts: 2I use to work with a trainer that started race horses and when we were starting colts on

the hot walker we’d walk beside them, but always looped their leads through a ring so if they spooked the lead could slide through and nobody got hung up if needed. Thank-fully we never had any issues. We’d also pair those that like to run with those that liked to stop and it kept them pretty bal-anced, if you have that option. Must say that I’m jealous though that you have one! Good luck!!ninaomDitch the Stirrups Posts: 5184Location: Sorrow Not! Defending against workplace bullies Good question. there is one where I board but I am scared to use it. What scares me is how when it stops there is a strong pull on the rope from the momentum stopping. I think my horse would freak.

kissmybarrelbuttElite Veteran Posts: 989On a four horse hotwalker, I put a horse that already knows how directly across from the “newbie”. I hooked the horses up and quickly flip the switch on and off. Just long enough for it move and alert the horsee. Typically this will spook the newbie and they will slightly jump. After the horse has calmed back down I turn the switch on for

a few seconds and then off again. Just enough for them to take a few steps. Then I turn it on and leave it. I always wait til they have made it around once or twice

to walk off. It always works without a hitch for me!

SunnyGotMeGoodExtreme Veteran Posts: 550Location: Southern Pennsylvania Do you mean a Chifney bit? I’m not being snarky, I am just curious.

chasendacashElite Veteran Posts: 882Location: west of East TexasI’ve never had one but when I was a kid my uncle paid me $2/hr to sit out there with a lunge whip because the first thing they all learned was that they could stop it. I’ve never seen anyone have a problem with them running it faster.

Used2BExpert Posts: 2199I train mine to the walker by leading them along beside the walker for a few laps and jerking the ropes so they get to hear it rattle before they are hard tied to it then after a few laps I tie them high and stand back. I NEVER start and stop my walker with horses already on it....I always have it already running before I hook to it...I just

walk along side it and tie the horse to it as I walk. On the rare occasion I am going to jog one on it I do use the on/off/on/off/on technique the other poster mentioned so that they don’t get that huge surge of pres-sure all at once. Sometimes I do get one that freaks and flips out....my walker is sturdy and I tie high with a strong halter and let them figure it out. I’ve had some real idiots on mine who have went totally nuts but I’ve never actually had one to get hurt but I’ve always known the possibility was there that it could happen. Also, I have ropes instead of chains on mine and don’t use any big snaps....I’m always afraid the chains and big snaps could hit them in the eye if they went nuts.

Used2BExpert Posts: 2199RE: chasendacash - Weak walker.....should have had a stronger one.

BoosaflukeElite Veteran Posts: 720Location: Ok RE: YearlyThis is how we do it :-)

Used2BExpert Posts: 2199I’m always surprised by how few responces “hot walker” questions get on here. It seems like tons of people have hot walkers but I don’t know if people don’t use them or just don’t have anything to say about them??

TWO-TIME DERBY WINNER BRACE FOR BERNAL IS REMINGTON PARK HORSE OF

THE MEETING

OKLAHOMA CITY – A perfect Remington Park record in 2013, going five-for-five while winning back-to-back derbies, has earned Brace For Bernal honors as Horse of the Meeting. The streaking 3-year-old was tabbed in voting by media covering the Remington Park season and track personnel.

Owned by Noel Lopez-Prieto of Canadian, Texas and trained by record-setting conditioner Luis Villafranco, Brace For Bernal was ridden ex-clusively by Paul Nieto. An Oklahoma-bred by Furyofthewind from the Shazoom mare Zoom Bracer, Brace For Bernal opened his season with a win, by just a neck, in a Starter Allowance race for those who had run for a $10,000 claiming price.

After the winning tune-up in March, Brace For Bernal won his trial for the Remington Park Derby by a whopping 2-1/2 lengths before winning the final on April 20 by one length. Then it was on to a May 12 trial for the Grade 2 Heritage Place Derby that he won by 1-3/4 lengths. The June 1 final was another romp with Brace For Bernal cruising home to win by 1-1/2 lengths.

A winner of six consecutive races, dating to Nov. 2012, Brace For Ber-nal has won eight of 14 career attempts with total earnings of $318,726. He was bred in Oklahoma by Joaquin Lopez.

In addition to winning Horse of the Meeting honors, Brace For Ber-nal was a unanimous choice as Champion 3-year-old while also being voted Champion Oklahoma-bred.

Villafranco won nine stakes races during the Remington Park season, a new record for stakes scores by a conditioner.

BIG BIZ PERRY – Champion 2-year-old Winning a trial by two lengths and then the Grade 1, $1,075,260 Heri-tage Place Futurity by a hard-fought head, garnered a 2-year-old sea-sonal title for filly Big Biz Perry.

Owned by Jose Espinosa of Edinburg, Texas and trained by Trey Wood, Big Biz Perry was ridden in her trial by Ricky Ramirez. Jockey Cipri-ano Vidana, her rider in two previous starts at Sam Houston Race Park prior to moving to Remington Park, had the call in the Heritage Place Futurity.

Bred in Texas by Burnett Ranches, Big Biz Perry is by Mr Jess Per-ry from the Shazoom mare Big Bizooms. She won both of her Rem-ington Park starts and has three wins from four attempts overall. The huge score in the Heritage Place Futurity drove her career earnings to $392,500.

PRICELESS FEATURE – Champion Older Male The best race of his season made Priceless Feature the Champion Older Male. He won the Grade 1 Remington Park Championship by a neck over Ochoa, the all-time money leader in the sport.

The Championship score followed a victory in the Sooner State Stakes for Oklahoma-breds in early May. Priceless Feature was third in his first attempt of the season, the Mr Jet Moore Handicap for Oklahoma-breds in early April.

Owned by Ed Melzer of Edmond, Okla. and trained by Eddie Willis, Priceless Feature is a 4-year-old gelding by Feature Mr Jess from the

Corona Cartel mare Southern Price. He was bred in Oklahoma by Sam Green.

A winner of 10 races from 20 attempts, Priceless Feature has won eight races at Remington Park in his three-year career. Overall he has made $586,043.

BLACK ROSALITA – Champion Older Female A pair of victories in the top stakes events for females captured hon-ors for Black Rosalita. Her rallying triumphs in the Grade 3 Decketta Stakes and the Grade 2 Junos Request Stakes made her a unanimous champion in the category.

Owned and bred in Maryland by Dr. Francis L. Glowacki 97 Trust of Queenstown, Md., Black Rosalita is trained by Luz Chavira and was ridden in all of her Remington Park starts by Ivan Carnero.

A 4-year-old filly by Sweet First Down from the Tolltac mare Poneta, Black Rosalita has won nine races from 26 lifetime attempts with three wins at Remington Park. She has earned $169,060.

DOCS DUSTY OKIE – Champion Distance Runner A widening 1-3/4 lengths win in the Grade 3 Remington Distance Handicap on the final day of the season won a title for Docs Dusty Okie.

For the first time in years, the Distance Runner division was wide-open as no horse dominated the category. His only win from four attempts was conclusive enough for the voters to tab Docs Dusty Okie who is owned and bred in Oklahoma by Dusty Rose Ranch of Oklahoma City. Trained by Cristino Estrada, the gelding was ridden by Randy Wilson in his stakes win.

A 6-year-old by Okey Dokey Dale from the Hy Lucky Jay mare Stepha-nie Rose, Docs Dusty Okie has won 10 races from 32 attempts overall with six scores at Remington Park. He has made $254,601 to date.

IMACHICKENKICKER – Champion Paint A three-race win streak to end the season clinched the title for Imach-ickenkicker, owned & bred by Shirley Wheeler of Boynton, Okla.

After losing all chance with a hopping start in a March trial for the Speedhorse/Graham Farms Paint & Appaloosa Derby, Imachicken-kicker made no other mistakes the rest of the season. She won the Paul Harber Memorial Stakes in late March followed by a win in the Grade 1 American Paint Classic Derby in April. The talented female wrapped up her title when she beat older runners in the Grade 1 National Cow-boy & Western Heritage Museum Stakes in May.

Trained by Luis Villafranco and ridden in by Cody Jensen and Paul Nieto during her stakes runs, Imachickenkicker is a 3-year-old by Dos Poruno from the Game Patriot mare Game Chicken. The three wins this season boost her career total to six and her overall Remington Park total to four. From 14 career starts, Imachickenkicker has made $140,527.

MAJOR TOM – Champion Appaloosa The lone Appaloosa in the richest race for Paints & Appaloosas in the world, Major Tom flew to victory in the Grade 1, $249,175 Speedhorse/Graham Farms Futurity and clinched his divisional title. Owned by Mary Hainline of Noble, Okla. and trained by Eddie Wil-lis, Major Tom drew away in the Speedhorse/Graham to win by 1-3/4 lengths. Jockey Jimmy Brooks was up for all three of Major Tom’s wins this season.

A gelding by Red Storm Cat (qh) from the Mr Eye Opener (qh) mare Eyesa Knockout, Major Tom was bred in Oklahoma by Gary Vaughn.

News

Page 12: Thrjuly2013 web

Page 12

He has three wins from four attempts, earning $109,649.

SMR BRONTE – Champion Claimer Perfect in all four of his Remington Park races in 2013, all around the turn at 870 yards, SMR Bronte did not get tabbed in the Distance cat-egory for lack of a stakes victory but does earn the title as top claimer.

SMR Bronte is owned by Scott Roberts of Maysville, Okla. after he claimed the gelding away from Ron Delp after the horse won at the $7,500 claiming level in March. After taking over, trainer Brian Muse kept SMR Bronte in allowance or starter allowance races the rest of the way, avoiding further claims while the wins continued.

Ridden in his four victories by Albert Medrano, G.R. Carter and Ivan Carnero, SMR Bronte has six career wins overall from 12 attempts. His four wins this season equal his career Remington Park total and all of his 870-yard attempts.

Bred in Washington by Charles and Cynthia Hoctor, the 4-year-old SMR Bronte is by Brimmerton from the Petersburg (tb) mare Cock-tails Anyone (tb). After his perfect Remington Park season, he has now earned $47,733.

Open daily at 10:30am for casino gaming and simulcast racing, Rem-ington Park features the Bricktown Brewery on the casino floor. Admis-sion, general parking and valet parking are always free at Remington Park.

AAEP Publishes Pigeon Fever Guidelines for Veterinarians and Horse Owners

The American Association of Equine Practitioners has published com-prehensive guidelines for the identification, treatment and prevention of Pigeon Fever (Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis infection), tra-ditionally among the most common infectious diseases in horses in the western United States. During the last decade, however, disease inci-dence has increased considerably in other regions, including the Mid-west.

The guidelines, available at www.aaep.org/images/files/PigeonFever-Guidelines52713.pdf, summarize the clinical signs, diagnostic methods for various clinical forms of the disease, treatments, and approaches to biosecurity and control. They also offer new insights into the use of se-rologic testing — with links to laboratories offering such testing — and antimicrobial therapy for internal infection.

Infection in horses is caused by the C. pseudotuberculosis bacterial or-ganism, which thrives in hot dry weather. The organism can survive for up to two months in hay and shavings but new research has found that it can survive for more than eight months in soil contaminated with manure, placing increased emphasis on good sanitation practices.

The portal of entry for the bacteria is through abrasions or wounds in the skin or mucous membranes or through inhalation. Pigeon Fever ex-presses itself most often as external abscesses in the pectoral or ventral abdomen, and less frequently as internal infection or ulcerative lym-phangitis.

Without a vaccine, horse owners are urged to take necessary precau-tions to minimize the risk of transmission by implementing appropri-ate biosecurity measures, including fly control, meticulous wound care, isolation of affected horses and wearing of disposable exam gloves and hand washing when working with affected horses. Owners are advised

to work with their veterinarian for treatment of diseased horses.

The Pigeon Fever guidelines were created by AAEP member Dr. Sha-ron Spier on behalf of the AAEP’s Infectious Disease Committee and synopsize the research and clinical experience of her and her colleagues at the University of California-Davis.

The American Association of Equine Practitioners, headquartered in Lexington, Ky., was founded in 1954 as a non-profit organization dedicated to the health and welfare of the horse. Currently, the AAEP reaches more than 5 million horse owners through its nearly 10,000 members worldwide and is actively involved in ethics issues, practice management, research and continuing education in the equine veteri-nary profession and horse industry.

Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association Central U.S.Championship

Results from the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, OK.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Charlie Little of St. Michael, Minn., along with his traveling companion Roy Bean from Eagle, Idaho, dazzled at the Stephenville Trailers Cen-tral United States Championship in Guthrie, Okla. Their outstanding performance netted Charlie the High Overall and Champion Cowboy titles, while Roy took a fix on the Reserve Champion Cowboy honors with a second overall finish. Both of these young men demonstrated superb horsemanship, excellent course management and precise shoot-ing. Curt Moore of Decatur, Texas, finished third overall with another extraordinary performance.

2012 Reserve World Champion Cowgirl Jesse Kuka came from Maple Plain, Minn., and once again showed her expertise and skill with a six-gun atop of a galloping horse. She captured the Champion Cowgirl lau-rels with a fourth-place overall finish. Morrison, Tenn.’s Dr. Amanda Porter clinched the Reserve Champion Cowgirl slot, proving that con-sistency pays.

The Starline Showcase provided another CMSA™ Friday night of spectacular mounted shooting competition. Columbia, Tenn.’s Cody Clark’s near-record run took the Men’s Open Eliminator. Jesse Kuka enriched her event winnings by taking the Lady’s Open. Daniel Kelly hustled to a substantial win in the Men’s Limited Eliminator, while Co-lumbia, Mo.-based Maria Lasley laid claim to the Women’s Limited Eliminator Title.

The Rifle and Shotgun competitions provided an exciting variation in the Showcase mounted shooting. John Clark of Morrison, Tenn., bested second-place Zane Chunn of Ft. Smith, Ark., by less than eight one-hundredths of a second to eke out the win in the Rifle Class. Marcus Wadley of Springtown, Texas, took the win in the Shotgun Class.

The AQHA and APHA breed classes underscored the impor-tance of the equine half of a Cowboy Mounted Shooting™ team. Charlie Little piloting “Tazs Little Freckles” took the AQHA Open Class. The AQHA Select Amateur was won by “Te Jay Caleb” ridden by Nancy Crosby from Morrison, Tenn. The AQHA Amateur Division winner “The Genuine Blond” as chauffeured by Weatherford, Texas-based Kelsi Ford. Collin Esau from Claremore, Okla., rode “Crame Plated Doll” for the AQHA Youth Division win. The newly established American Paint Horse Association Classes are blending into Cowboy

Mounted Shooting™ with a bang. The APHA Cowboy Amateur Class went to Maria Lasley riding “MR Poppy Choice”. The APHA Ama-teur Master Class was won by “Moondancer’s Honey Back” ridden by Thomas Porter of Greenbrier, Ark. The popular APHA Youth Cowboy went to “Dude Markers Storm” piloted by Sanger, Texas’s Shelby De-Geare.

son. “We are really working hard to make this a great event. It’s going to be all about the contestants at this rodeo.”

“We will have $1,500 added per event, including breakaway roping. We will also have trophy buckles for the winners,” said Susan. “We are very, very excited to be able to do this rodeo. “

Southeast Region Cowboy, Justin Thigpen, pictured competing at IFR43

The town of Gay, GA has a population of 100 people, give or take, but the events the community hosts have definitely put them on the map. Twice a year the Cotton Pickin’ Fair draws entertainers and artists to the tiny town to bring back a bit of nostalgia to present day fair goers. “Our town is just a little drive through town. We have a post office and a convenience store, that isn’t always that convenient, “ laughed Susan. “It’s a quiet little town, except when we are having an event.

We always welcome all of the visitors, but are glad when it quiets back down.”

“The rodeo will be held at the Quercus Cattle Company’s covered are-na. The arena is 52,000 sq. ft. We host a variety of horse events, from clinicians to ropings. I’ve been involved with several of the high school rodeos we have put on,” said Susan.

“It’s a totally self-contained facility. We have concessions, cabins and bunkhouses available and we have just added 40 r.v. hookups. When we are having an event, people will come out to the arena just for the food. Our ranch manager does the bar-b-que and people love it.”

“We are working on an entire week of events leading up to the rodeo,” said Susan. “Since Halloween is the night before the rodeo, we are talking with the area churches on having their “Trunk or Treat” night at the arena. My goal is to have 100 cars there for the kids. We’re also planning a gospel night on Wednesday and we are trying to put together a match barrel race for Tuesday. We’ll have more information on these activities as it gets closer.”

“We are getting a lot of sponsorship involvement as well. The Meri-wether Department of Safety, Ram Rodeo, Priefert, Georgia Power, Southern River Electric and several local sponsors are wanting to get involved.”

“Robin Brooks and Southern Rodeo Company will be producing the ro-deo. Proceeds from the rodeo will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. It is a wall listing local people that have been killed in action. We also help buy fire equipment for the Meriwether Department of Safety,” said Pritchet.

Kentucky Horse Council Announces

New Horsemen’s Regional Caucuses

Lexington, KY, June 28, 2013 – The Kentucky Horse Council (KHC) today announces new Horsemen’s Regional Caucuses to inspire networking, communication and edu-cation for Kentucky’s horsemen and horsewomen across the Com-monwealth.

Each caucus will include a meal and an evening of discussions about horse issues and activities in the area. The results of the 2012 Ken-tucky Equine Survey will be presented, with specific county figures. Kentucky Horse Council board members will update horsemen on KHC projects and request input from horsemen on additional ideas that are specific to their areas. Local and state officials will be invited to meet the horsemen in their areas, and to understand the horse in-dustry in the region.

The first two caucuses will be in the regions surrounding Hardin and Boyle counties.

The Hardin Regional Caucus will include horsemen from Meade, Breckenridge, Larue, Grayson and Hart counties, as well as Hardin county horsemen. This caucus is scheduled for Wednesday, August 21st at the Hardin County Extension Office. The event and meal will start at 6:00PM EST.

The Boyle Region Caucus will include horsemen from Anderson, Washington, Marion, Mercer, Garrard, and Lincoln counties, as well as Boyle county horsemen. This caucus is scheduled for Thursday, Au-gust 22nd at the Boyle County Extension Office. The event and meal will start at 6:00PM EST.

“The Kentucky Horse Council’s mission is to support and educate all horsemen in Kentucky,” commented Anna Zinkhon, President of the KHC Board. “These caucuses allow us to talk directly to horsemen from all breeds and uses across the Commonwealth, to make sure that we understand their needs, and also to let them know about KHC’s cur-rent programs.”

She continued,” We also believe in the importance of involving local and state elected officials. The equine industry needs to continue to emphasize the importance and size of this industry all across the Com-monwealth. The KHC board is looking forward to these caucuses to provide us ideas for planning projects for 2014 and beyond.”

There is no charge to attend these caucuses, but registration is request-ed to estimate the number of meals and handouts. Additional caucuses to cover all regions of the Commonwealth will be scheduled through-out the remainder of 2013 and into 2014.

Note From the President

Hello everyone! Well it is the end of the season. We have had a phe-nomenal year again with great growth in membership and the number of shows sanctioned. This growth means great things for our member-ship, including more awards!

In this edition of the Horse Resource you will find the preliminary Na-tional Finals Show Flier. This is not the final copy of the show flier as we are working with AQHA and the USEF to finalize our drug testing standards. I hope that you all will appreciate what we are trying to do through implementing a more stringent and specific drug policy. We want a fair organization and fair National Finals. We will start by test-ing the 1D Champions and reserve Champions of the Open, Youth and Masters classes as these are the contestants that set the pace for the rest of our divisions. Further details and specifications will be noted in our revised 2014 Rule Books and on the final 2014 IBRA National Finals

Show Flier. The prices listed on the show flier and the schedule shown will remain the same. Please check here next month or with the IBRA’s website directly for further detail and information.

The 2014 membership prices will be increasing. The increase will only be by $5 on individual and family memberships. There are many rea-sons for this increase, most importantly to help fund the random drug testing that we plan to implement into this coming season. We ask that you please remember and recognize that this will make not only our organization but the sport of barrel racing a fairer place to compete.

I personally thank all of you for your continued support! The IBRA is very aware that our success is based upon your happiness. If you are looking to belong to an organization that encourages fairness and good family fun we hope that you will find the IBRA to be your choice as-sociation.

NATIONAL NEWS AND UPDATES

State NewsIndianaWell here we go---the last month to gather points for the 2012-2013 year end season. There are 26 Indiana qualifingIBRA shows left so don’t worry there is still time to get in the TOP 5 for year end and/ or get a 100 points to qualify for the National Finals. Year End Awards have been ordered and will be presented at the INDIANA STATE SHOW this year, per member request. So get out and IBRA barrel race and have loads of fun WHILE EARNING $ $$$ & PRIZES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

STATE SHOW UPDATE: If you are still trying to get sponsors we have extended the deadline to July 15th ---the deadline for STATE SHOW ENTRIES to avoid the $25/horse late fee. My office staff will be help-ing me with the sponsor books so your sponsor will still be able to get in the book and on the back of our charity T-shirts. Hope this helps all the members to get to their state show! For all that have gotten sponsors please let them know to e-mail their ad that they want into the sponsor book to: [email protected]. Remember saddle sponsors will also be listed on the front of the sponsor books and will be getting pictures with the saddle winners at the Indiana IBRA state show that is at C-BAR-C arena August 16,17, & 18th. This year we will be giving away 10 saddles, 50 jackets, wild cards, & more for those contestants who place in the TOP 5 of each division of the open, youth & masters at the

state show----plus our state year end awards will be presented to all the members who have worked so hard to get into the TOP 5 standings in each division for year end. And again our barrel racing family will be eating together on Saturday night at a pitch- in dinner ---more to come about that in the August 5th newsletter.

And on a last note.... members see Wayne & I ride at shows all over the state & I truly listen to each members opinion and file it way back in my head---you know where the cobwebs grow---and I try to decide what is best for the majority of our members for our state show and state decisions. This year Wayne suggested that I pool all the major questions into a survey that the members who attend their state show will be able to answer and that way truly the majorities opinion will be heard. So each Indiana State member will be handed a short survey paper at their state show check- in and we will trial this to see how it works. Gotta love Wayne, SOMETIMES he comes up with good ideas! See ya down the road at a barrel race ---Linda

KentuckyHey everyone!Lots of big things coming up this month! It is hard to believe that the seasons end is already here. That means it is reward time! Once again we will return to the Central KY Ag Center in Liberty, KY to have

PennsylvaniaWhere has the 2013 season gone? It’s hard to believe we are 30 days from seeing the end of the 2013 season. I’m amazed how our state has grown since I took over as being your director. We are currently two members shy of hitting 300 members this year! I’m proud to be your director & have enjoyed everyone’s fellowship at the shows I go too!It seems like the years just fly by these days. I recently mentioned how it’s been a honor to watch a lot of Youth kids grow up into young adults. These Youth are the future for Barrel Racing so always be a role model for them & take the time to watch them run their horses & cheer them on! We sure have a bunch of top notch riders.

The State Finals this year is being held at Crooked Creek in Ford City, PA. Our Finals is being sponsored by Sheetz, Inc this year & the Bob Buchleitner Family. We appreciate the Buchleitner’s for hosting our Fi-

nals this year. The weekend will start on Friday with exhibitions start-ing at 1 PM running through 5 PM. Three classes will follow which include 2D Poles, 3D Youth, & 4D Open. On Saturday will be the Finals which will count as a bonus 15th show for the 2013 season. You will also receive points for the new 2014 season. Wild Cards will be awarded to all division winners in Open, Youth, & Masters along with other awards. If things get rained out we will use Sunday as a rain date. If not, they will run their regular planned scheduled. The show will be approved all weekend for PA West, East, & WV. Frontier Buckle is also sponsoring our Target Race again this year. The winner will receive a nice trophy buckle. Details will be available at the sign up booth! I hope to see you all at the Finals! If you can please lend a hand to help set barrels to give someone a break during the weekend. The show flier can be found on the PA show approval page or on our Facebook page. I hate to say that all stalls are sold out. There is a waiting list in case someone cancels so please still give Jamie Hopper a call. You can also tie out at Crooked Creek.

With the 2013 season ending soon it will be time to think about year-end awards & banquets for both the East & West. Where would you like to see your banquets being held this year? Do you want jackets this year? Do you have any ideas for awards? I’m open to any sugges-tion & would love to hear from you. I’m a phone call or email away! Did you get a sponsorship yet this year? Every $25 sponsorship can add up fast & we need everyone that we can get. Sponsorship money is a huge bonus for year end awards & how much money I can spend for them. Ask a relative, friend, local business, your boss, feed store, tack shop, etc if they would like to sponsor you. You can find forms & request letters on the IBRA PA homepage or ask me for one. Also remember if you want to run the Sponsorship Race at Nationals you must turn in at least $100 in sponsorships which can be a combination of any amount to add up to $100. You can’t run in the class unless you get them turned in!

In closing I want to thank everyone for their support over the year! I hope to see you all at the State Finals & at Nationals. Please be safe when traveling to these & all events. Congratulations on a great year & I hope you all have met your goals for the year. God Bless you all! -Michele

The 138th Preakness Story & Photos by: Steve Heuertz

After the magic in the mud that was Orb’s decisive victory in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (Gr. 1), the racing world turned its collective attention to the 138th running of

the Preakness Stakes (Gr. 1). Here, racing’s newest star would attempt to follow his smashing Derby effort with an encore performance that would further validate his legacy and take him one step closer toward racing immortality.

On October 25, 1870, Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland held it’s inaugural race meet. Affectionately known as “Old Hilltop,” due to a previous small rise in the infield where many would congre-gate, Pimlico is the second oldest racetrack in America behind only Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York. While Pimlico

has hosted many historical moments including the epic match race be-tween Seabiscuit and War Admiral, the inaugural meet was showcased by it’s first stakes race, the Dinner Party Stakes. Three years later that initial stakes winner would be honored by the Maryland Jockey Club when they named their newest stakes at Pimlico after him, the Preak-ness Stakes.

Today, the Preakness is a $1,000,000, Grade 1 Thoroughbred horse race restricted to three-year-olds and contested over 1 3/16 miles on dirt. Known as the “The Run for the Black-Eyed Susan’s,” the Preak-ness is the second jewel of the Triple Crown, annually run the third Saturday in May and exactly two weeks after the Kentucky Derby.

Upon passing the Preakness test, the triumphant horse is escorted to a spe-cial winner’s circle that is a replica of the old Pimlico clubhouse cupola. There, the Preakness winner is deco-rated in a garland of daisies altered to represent the Black-Eyed Susan’s that won’t actually bloom in Mary-land until June. Meanwhile, atop the cupola, a weather vane in the shape of horse and jockey are painted in the colors of the winning silks. The paint job will remain for one year, honoring the Preakness victor until a new horse takes its place. Finally, the winning owner is presented the coveted Woodlawn Vase. Crafted in 1860, the trophy is the most valu-able in all of sports with an appraisal totaling over $4,000,000. Although the original trophy is present in the winner’s circle each year, it is not actually given to the winner as they instead receive a smaller replica to signify their accomplishment.

One of the most defining charms of the Preakness is the optimism and hope it offers legions of racing fans each year. As the race always draws the Kentucky Derby winner, the Preakness affords an opportunity to the only remaining horse that can win the Triple Crown. In fact, the Preak-ness has a special stall reserved for the Derby winner. Arguably the most famous stall in all of racing, stall 40 in the Preakness Barn has been home to such legendary horses as Secretariat, Seattle Slew and Af-firmed as they each took one step closer to racing’s most exclusive club.

This year, stall 40 was home to Orb. The Stuart Janney III and Ogden Mills “Dinny” Phipps owned colt arrived at Pimlico with trainer Shug McGaughey amidst the speculation and hope that he might be the one to replace Affirmed’s name as the most recent Triple Crown winner. Rebounding extremely well out of the Derby, Orb appeared to actually

be improving with every passing day. Upon leaving Churchill Downs, Orb returned briefly to his home at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, where he turned in a scintillating four fur-long work in 47 seconds flat. McGaughey was thrilled.

Although Orb drew the unfavorable rail in the nine horse Preakness field, he was installed as the even-money favor-ite. Joining Orb in the Preakness starting gate were five other Derby contenders: Mylute (5th in the Derby), Oxbow (6th), Will Take Charge (8th), Itsmyluckyday (15th) and Golden-

cents (17th). While many of the other Derby horses skipped the Preak-ness and rested for a potential bid in the Belmont Stakes, these five would take a second crack at Orb. Despite the six Derby entrants, three other “new shooters” entered the Preakness: Illinois Derby winner, De-parting, appeared the strongest of this contingent, while Govenor Char-lie and Titletown Five aimed their sights on the Black-Eyed Susan’s as well.

Nonetheless, all eyes remained on Orb as the Preakness field was called to the post and the United States Naval Academy Glee Club sang “Maryland, My Maryland.” The public became increasingly confident in the colt’s chances and bet him down to 3-5 as the race time favorite. The gates opened and the field was off in the Preakness.

Orb (1) broke well and free of trouble from the rail, but settled back and off the pace as Goldencents (2) made a push for the lead. Ti-tletown Five (3) raced up behind Goldencents but Oxbow (6) moved in from the outside and established himself as the early pacesetter. Oxbow ran into the clubhouse turn on an easy lead and set a first 1/4 mile time of 23.94 seconds. Oxbow extended his lead to two lengths in front of

Goldencents while Titletown Five dropped to third and Itsmyluckyday (9) sat outside of him in fourth. Next was Orb in fifth continuing on the rail with Departing (4) flanking to his outside. However, recognizing the pace was slower than expected as Oxbow moved through 1/2 mile in 48.60 seconds, jockey Joel Rosario moved Orb off the rail, around Titletown Five and into third position. Surprisingly though, the Derby

winner immediately lost his position and fell back into seventh as the field moved into the final turn. Meanwhile, Oxbow continued his comfortable lead and moved through 3/4 miles in 1:13.26, a re-markable three seconds slower than the Derby pace. Mylute (5) began moving along the outside and Orb attempted to fight back from the inside, but Oxbow’s lead had been too easy and he headed the Preakness field into the stretch. Goldencents and Departing began to fade and Itsmyluckday moved into second. Mylute continued to close outside of him but neither would catch Oxbow. With Gary Stevens aboard, Oxbow stole the Preakness. The final time of 1:57.54 was the slowest in the race since 1961.

Although he would move up to grab fourth, Orb’s bid was too little, too late and the Triple Crown would remain vacant for the 35th consecutive year. Despite the immediate shock and disappointment of this reality, it was quickly realized that Oxbow’s victory, much like Orb’s in the Derby, was remark-able in it’s own right and another throwback to days of racing past.

The 138th Preakness Story & Photos by: Steve Heuertz

The son of Awesome Again and out of the Cee’s Tizzy mare, Tizamazing, Oxbow entered the Preakness off an impressive 6th place finish in the Kentucky Derby. Although he was well beaten by the top five finishers, Oxbow was the only horse near the hot Derby pace that was able to main-tain relatively close near the finish. Every other one of the early pacesetters finished 12th or further back, with many finishing in the bottom third of the race. However, heading into the Preakness, it was unknown if that effort had spent Oxbow and if he would have anything left in the tank a mere two weeks later. As a result, the betting public sent Oxbow off at 14-1, the second longest shot in the nine horse Preakness field. This would be a mistake as the public had clearly forgotten where Oxbow came from.

Owned by Calumet Farm, Oxbow represents the greatest of racing dynasties. From 1941 to 1968, Calumet horses won an astonishing eight Ken-tucky Derby’s and seven Preakness Stakes. Two of their horses, Whirlaway in 1941 and Citation in 1948, added the Belmont Stakes to their Derby and Preakness victories and captured the Triple Crown. However, the farm fell on harder times and had not won a single Triple Crown race since Forward Pass’ 1968 Preakness. That is, until 45 years later when Oxbow would cross the same wire and rejuvenate the Calumet legacy.

L to R: Gary Stevens takes a few last steps toward history; Itsm-yluckyday heads to the turf course at Pimlico and awaits the call for “Rider’s Up.”; Orb walks in the special Preakness paddock established every year on the turf course while awaiting the arrival of his partner, jockey Joel Rosario; Role reversal. However, Calumet wasn’t the only connection that felt the thrilling return to the winner’s circle in an American Classic. Trainer, D. Wayne Lukas dominated racing in the 1980’s and 90’s. In his illustrious career, Lukas won five Kentucky Derby’s, five Preakness Stakes, and four Belmont Stakes. However, much like Calumet farm, Lukas had not tasted victory in a Triple Crown race in years, with his last win coming with Commendable in the 2000 Belmont Stakes. Still, he sat tied with “Sunny Jim” Fitzsimmons at 13 total Triple Crown race victories until Oxbow added the record-setting 14th. Although the public had been paying little attention to Oxbow leading up to the Preakness, Lukas knew he had something up his sleeve.

And It’s......Oxbow!Left: Oxbow sets an easy pace all around Pimlico; Below and Inset: Shocked that nobody pressed the pace, an ecstatic Gary Stevens yells out aboard Ox-bow as they skip away and win racing’s second jewel of the Triple Crown, the 138th running of the Preak-ness Stakes!

Page 34: Thrjuly2013 web

Page 34

Story & Photos by: Steve Heuertz The 138th Preakness

Two days before the race, Lukas sat outside his familiar Preak-ness barn and answered ques-tions about the three horses he would enter in the Preakness: Oxbow, Will Take Charge and Titletown Five. When asked about how the horses worked that morning, Lukas said, “The truth of the matter is I really felt good when I watched, especially Oxbow. That’s the most relaxed and comfortable I’ve seen him out there and I know Gary Ste-vens is getting acquainted a little bit more all the time with these works, so, I like what I saw this morning.” Lukas was right, Ste-vens was getting very acquaint-ed with Oxbow.

On November 27, 2005, feel-ing battered and bruised after a lengthy riding career, Hall of Fame jockey, Gary Stevens, hung up his saddle and retired from racing. He quickly moved to the broadcast booth as the lead analyst for NBC’s coverage of the Triple Crown races and developed his acting career that saw a previous role in the 2003 film “Seabiscuit” and a more recent role in the 2012 HBO Series, “Luck.” However, after seven years of rest Stevens be-gan to feel the racing itch again, and in January, he scratched that itch and returned to rid-ing. Now at 50 years old, and with eight Triple Crown race victories to his name, Stevens received a leg up on Oxbow and with a Hall of Fame ride, guided the colt to Preakness victory. The win made Stevens the old-est jockey to win the Preakness and gave him an even three wins in all three jewels of the Triple Crown. His masterful ride, where he slowed the pace to help his front-running colt, even seemed to surprise Stevens as he yelled out in excitement while approaching the finish line, al-most in shock that no other horse attempted to grab the lead early in the race or press the easy pace thereafter.

L to R: Orb will not make an appearance in the winner’s circle for the first time in six races; Departing departs the Preakness in the legendary colors of Claiborne Farm; Mylute cannot believe Oxbow stole the Preakness in 1:57.54; Itsm-yluckday cools off after a strong second place effort; Gary Stevens’ return to riding receives the ultimate validation; The celebration in the winner’s circle cupola while Calu-met Farm’s silks are already being painted upon the historic weather vane; Racing’s newest star exits the Preakness win-ner’s circle.

Story & Photos by: Steve Heuertz The 138th PreaknessOxbow’s victory in the Preakness may have spoiled a possible Triple Crown bid, but it still hit the racing “trifecta.” With Calumet, Lukas and Stevens, Oxbow transported the rac-ing world back in time and rewarded its past heroes with newfound glory. After returning from the testing barn later the evening of the Preakness, Oxbow bounced around the grassy areas behind the stakes barn. He ap-peared as if it was just another day and the most important thing oc-curring here was that next possible bite of delicious grass he could grab. However, three weeks from the day, the Triple Crown would move on to it’s third and final jewel, the 1 1/2 mile Belmont Stakes. While the possibility looms that both Orb and Oxbow could challenge “The Test of the Champion,” the Belmont Stakes will remain as compelling as ever with the realization that a dual clas-sic winner isn’t so bad either.

Steve Heuertz BioIt started with a horse named Cowboy. Disregarded and discounted, this nine-year-old Red Dun Quarter Horse left his life as a ranch horse in South Dakota and ventured a new path into the life of Steve Heuertz in 2004. Shortly thereafter, a bond was formed that fully catapulted Steve into the world of the horse where he became fascinated with the wonderful capabilities of this majestic animal.Of particular interest were the speed, endurance and competitive spirit demonstrated by the equine heroes within the sport of Thor-oughbred Racing. Although initially satisfied with observing from afar, Steve became increasingly captivated by the sport and turned toward capturing the splendor of racing via his other passion, photography. The result was a recipe where he could combine his great love for horses, racing and photography into one harmonious blend that was greater than the sum of its parts.Since then, racing has taken Steve across the country to such wonderful places as Saratoga Race Course, Churchill Downs, Santa Anita Park, Pimlico Race Course, Belmont Park, Keeneland and Hooiser Park. During these travels, Steve has been fortunate to witness and photograph equally wonderful races such as the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes (racing’s famed Triple Crown) as well as the Travers Stakes, Santa Anita Derby, Indiana Derby, Stephen Foster Handicap and Breeders’ Cup, among others. However, residing in the Chicago suburb of St. Charles, IL, Steve regularly frequents Arlington Park and Hawthorne Race Course where he has enjoyed capturing magnificent races like the Arlington Million and Hawthorne Gold Cup.Today, Steve’s passion for horses, racing and photography is like a fire that continues to be stoked. While either behind the lens capturing the thrill of a Grade 1 race or in the saddle loping around a field with Cowboy, Steve has learned to operate under the simple truth that the more he is able to involve the horse in his life, the happier his days become.

Important Information for 2013 Regarding Existing Out of Competition Rules All horses nominated to stake races will be eligible for out of competition testing from the day of nomina-tion. Several drugs were added to Out of Competition Testing for 2011 including Zilpaterol, Ractopamine or any similar agent. If you have any questions about any of these rules, please refer to Indiana Code 71 IAC 8.5-2-5 and 71 IAC 8.5-3-4. You may also contact the Indiana Horse Racing Commission at http://www.in.gov/hrc/ or (317) 233-3120. How This Affects You • Once a horse is nominated to a stake race, he WILL be in the pool of horses used for selection of Out of Competition Testing. • -tition Testing, that horse must be produced at the track by the time provided by the IHRC. • If the horse is not brought to the race track within the allotted time, the horse will be ineligible to race in Indiana for one year. • The current trainer MUST be named at the time of nomination. July 2013 Newsletter

July is normally a transition month for Quarter Horse Racing in Indiana from Indiana Downs to Hoosier Park, but this year and after we are fortunate to be able to keep racing at Indiana Downs the entire year. On behalf of the Q.H.R.A.I. Board of Directors and the horsemen we represent, I would like to personally thank Rod Ratcliff, Jim Brown, Brian Elmore, Jon and Janie Schuster, Kevin Greely, Scott Peine and his race office staff, Johnnie Jamison and his gate crew for making our experience at Indiana Downs a great one.

The Fall Stake Schedule for Indiana Downs is set and we are excited for a great fall meet to begin. There are three new stake races this fall: The Pride In Progress Stake (3,4 and 5 year old maiden Stake), The Circle City Stake (3 and up NW2) and the Speed Sale Stake (2 yr olds that passed through the Speed Sale ring last year). Trials for the SSA Futurity and Derby are on August 10th, the Þrst of the remaining three all Quarter Horse racing days. Please note that the nomination for the Hoosier Park Classic is July 1st, however, because of the timing the stakes schedule was made available, there will be no penalty for late paying the nomination. Just remember the full amount of the nomination and sustaining payment of $800 must be postmarked by July 15th. The condition books and stake nomination forms are available on line and the books will be available in the race office the second week in July.

The QHRAI Speed Sale that was originally planned in July has been rescheduled to be in October. Please watch for details in the near future. The 2012 Sale has produced some hot runners in Indiana this year and QHRAI looks forward to providing the opportunity for many more winners to pass through the sale ring this October.

QHRAI hosted 16 youth on our Youth Day at Indiana Downs on June 22nd. It was a day full of activity where the youth who participated got a Þrst hand look at Quarter Horse Racing in Indiana including a visit to the starting gates where Johnnie Jamison explained the process of horses being broken from the gates and a visit to Tom Mosley’s shed row where he shared information about conformation, color, race training, saddling, leg wraps, etc. The youth also took a trainers test during the day. Three scholarships were given to selected participants based on scoring well on the trainers test and participation through the day. Congratulations to Kate Gollner and Cheyanna Patrick for winning a scholarship, and to Kacee Kugler for receiving a $2,000 scholarship and being selected to represent Indiana at the AQHA Youth Event at Los Alamitos later this year.

Enjoy the rest of your summer months. Try to stay cool and have the best of luck racing!

Summer is in full swing & staying cool, comfortable & chic is a must to survive the heat. On Horsesand-heels.com last month I featured a variety of outfits

& looks featuring the color coral. I’m sharing some of the favorites here; coral is such a versatile summer color.

Up first is a loose dress paired with cowboy boots. When it comes to beating the heat, you need to stick with clothes that flow & let you breath. The boots are by Lucchese & clutch is Sheridan French. (right)

Skulls will always be fashion forward in the west-ern & city worlds. These Macie Bean cowboy boots paired with a casual tank top from Old Navy & an Alexander McQueen bangle make a great every day attire. (left)

I have an obsession with cow-boy boots, Christian Louboutin, cosmetics and cooking. I have been riding since I was two-years old, have competed in just about every discipline & now I focus on barrel racing. I love speed & ath-letic horses, not to mention lots of sparkly things.

Over the last few weeks, even months, it seems like national di-sasters and tragedies are the headlines. Events far removed from us usually stay far from heart, but the devastation is hard

to ignore. For me personally over a few months, it has been one tragedy after another hitting very close to home with friends.

Just a few months ago, a high school basketball teammate, younger than I am, had a heart attack and is fortunate to be alive. Then, the entire family of one of the best friends I’ve ever had lost a new born baby girl. Only a few days after those two horrific events, a very dear friend suffered a massive heart attack and is still fighting to regain her true self. And only a few minutes after learning of that news, I heard another friend speak of almost losing her son to a tragic death over the weekend.

To be honest, I’m not sure what’s going on!

I do, however, know I’ve heard “the message” loud and clear. It’s a message God wants me to hear. Please understand, I would never sug-gest that He uses such events in the lives of others purposely to get my attention. To do so, would imply that getting my attention is so impor-tant that He would use tragedy to get it. But for me, the message could not be more clear. I need to love more deeply, more consistently, more completely, more substantively and more actively.

Part of the message is I need to do a better job of letting others know that they are loved, for their benefit, not mine. It is about the difference love makes in the life of others. The rest of the message is about the difference loving can make in me. I’m convinced that if I am loving more it means I am living more as I was designed to live.

I’m already pretty open about my loves – God, family, close friends, making a difference in other’s lives, animals, places, activities – but I need to express my passion and my love even more. I need to increase the love I show and increase the size of the circle of people to whom I show it.

I do not shy away from my desire to make a difference in the world, but that starts with making a difference in me. If I live and love better than I ever have before and not one person is changed, the world will still be a better place because I have become a better person. If I live and love better and even one other person is changed by my life and my love, then the world will be an exponentially better place.

The only love that benefits no one is the love never shared!,

Summer isn’t officially here yet but at least in the southern part of the country it gets pretty hot during the day. The heat can get especially brutal in June, July and August. Soon it will not unusual to have heat indexes past the 100 degree mark. All this added heat in comparison to the winter, spring and fall give our equine athletes, broodmares and pleasure horses more opportunities to have heat related problems. Summer also happens to be a time when racing, horse shows and other equine events are going full throttle. Broodmares are hopefully getting heavy in foal by this time so they have another source of heat growing in their bodies. Make sure these ladies have plenty of shade. Treating hyperthermia or overheating is much more difficult than preventing it so we will start off discussing prevention then go to recognition and lastly discuss treatment.

Most of us think that our horses become dehydrated after a show, trail ride, or long work session, but did you know that many of them start out dehydrated before the saddle hits their back. Living in hot climates is not just tough on us; it’s tough on our horses. High heat indexes can cause your horse to sweat excessively. Through sweat they loose water and electrolytes, mainly sodium, potassium, and chloride. Now you may be giving your horse some wonderfully flavored electrolyte with their feed, but be careful. Unlike other animals (humans, dogs, cats) sugar does not enhance the uptake of electrolytes in equines and unless you read the label, sugar may be the majority of what you are feeding. So what is the best electrolyte mixture for your horse? 1 Tbs Table

Salt (Sodium chloride) combined with *1Tbs Light Salt (Potassium chloride) per day, in the feed, for the average horse will supply the electrolytes he needs to replace what he looses in his sweat. Horses primarily cool themselves with evaporation, convection, conduction and avoidance of radiation. Since evaporation is the most important route of cooling for the horse, we need to make sure they have plenty of cool fresh water to drink so they can replace all the water that they loose by sweating. A horse standing in a pasture can easily drink twenty gallons or more of water per day. This is especially true of a horse being hauled in a trailer load of several horses. All the horses cumulative body heat can really heat up a trailer so make sure the air flow is very good especially if you are hauling during the day. If at all possible haul your horses at night after the sun goes down. Have enough drivers that you can switch drivers and keep all the drivers fully awake and refreshed. Try to haul in trailers with insulated roofs. Make sure your trailers are well ventilated, ventilated, ventilated! Make sure each horse is offered water on a regular basis every few hours during the trip.

As you can see, horses standing in a pasture or riding in a trailer can have a high demand for water but a horse can loose as much as 10-15 liters of water per hour in humid conditions with only moderate exercise. If fluids are not replaced it can lead to cardiovascular and thermoregulatory instability. Sweat must evaporate to be effective in regulating body temperature. When relative humidity is high, sweat evaporation is severely limited and your horse’s body temperature will not be regulated properly. So what do you do?

Always provide fresh water. If trail riding, consider a bucket of fresh water and a bucket of electrolyte water. You can use the same mixture listed above for a 5 gallon bucket. If you and your horse are competing, consider hyper-hydrating your horse before you leave and during competition. Hyper-hydration is simply giving your horses fluids before they need them. Studies have proven that being hyper-hydrated before you trailer and/ or compete will enhance performance and cause less stress on your horse’s body.

If you know your horse is as well hydrated as you can get him then take advantage of convection. Set up fans around the stall, barn or riding arena or put him in front of a fan after he comes off the race track or out of the barrel arena. If you are through riding or exercising him then use conduction to help the cooling process. Hosing cool water on a horse’s

body and legs will help cool the core body temperature. Even if you are not through competing or working him you can put cold water on his legs. The blood vessels are closer to the skin in the legs and therefore the blood is easier to cool. Some trainers believe that cold water put on a horse’s hot body will shut down the blood flow to the skin. This is incorrect. It is well proven that a horse’s core body temperature is easier to maintain within an acceptable range with cold water baths to the legs and or body during rest periods or after intense exercise. The cold water allows the heat of the horse’s body to be absorbed into the water as it runs off his body.

Recognizing a horse in heat distress is fairly easy. Since his cardiovascular system will be in distress due to his blood being in his skin trying to cool his body then his blood pressure will be low. This will result in pale mucous membranes and the gums will have a capillary refill time of greater than two seconds. If you pull up his skin into a tent it will stay in the tent position for 2 seconds or more. His rectal temperature could be 104 or higher. He will probably act depressed and very lethargic. If he shows these signs then get an equine veterinarian to check him out very quickly. In the mean time get him in the shade and have a fan blowing on him and hose him all over his body with cold water. Offer cool water to him to drink. When the veterinarian examines the horse he may need intravenous fluids depending on how dehydrated he is.

When the veterinarian gets to your horse he will probably pull some blood and do a few tests to quantify the amount of dehydration so he can calculate the amount of fluids to give. There will also probably be a test performed that checks his electrolyte levels and acid/base levels. Electrolytes will be added and medications to correct his acid/base balance as dictated by the blood tests. Your veterinarian will probably start IV fluids immediately upon arrival. Depending on the severity of the situation, the horse could be feeling pretty good within the hour or if treatment was started too late the outcome may not be too good. Upsets to a horse’s system like this many times set off the cascade of events that cause laminitis and colic. Those two are another story for a different day. Preventing heat distress is truly a time when an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Family? Do they ride?I have an older brother, Creed, who is 23 years old and I am fortunate enough to call him my best friend, too! He is not a fan of horses, to say the least, but does like selling us “horse people” hay. My dad sides with my brother when it comes to the horses; however, my mom has barrel raced her entire life and got me involved when I was eight years old on her old barrel mare.

Horses? My favorite horse is a 10 year old gelding BJ Bugle Boy who I bought off of Stephanie Marcum in 2009. I have been trying to downsize with high school coming to an end and college rapidly approaching so BJ is my only horse right now, but even if I had a hundred others he would still be my favorite. BJ was a bottle baby and he is still a baby to this day. He has the best personality in the world—always making me laugh—and is a joy to ride, too. I have taken some time off from barrel racing competitively and am excited to be back in the ring with him!

Other Animals? As for other animals my family has a couple dogs, some barn cats, and my brother raises black angus cattle, but my main focus outside of showing horses are my 4H pigs. This is my seventh year showing pigs in 4H and it is a complete and absolute blast. My dad helps a ton with feeding while I am away at shows, and I work with them during the week. It’s definitely not the same as showing horses but the week of the fair is always a good time, and I am especially excited this year for senior swine showmanship.

Who taught you to ride? Mentors? My mom got me involved with horses and taught me how to ride on her old mare, Copper. As I got a little older I kept my horses at Lloyd and Debbie Owens’ barn and Lloyd really taught me how to run barrels and poles, with Debbie helping, too. And of course all of the advice from my friend Wayne Stapleton has also helped shape my barrel racing career.

Hi!!!!! We can finally enjoy the horse shows in full bloom. I am back to riding and it was a long five weeks! For those of you who didn’t know, I stress fractured my back and my pelvis was out. (....and it was from falling off a horse.)

This weekend I went to a two day show and did good which always makes for a better weekend.

College is out for the summer but I ended up taking a summer class. It will just speed up my education.

For all of you going to NBHA youth world good luck!!!!! Last year was all for me, all grown up now..(right) Be sure and take fans , extension cords , and electrolytes but most of all enjoy.

Be sure and thank your parents its expensive and it is their vacation.

This month I want to take the opportunity to introduce to you a real Mastermind but she can also enjoy a water balloon fight with best of us!! ...Always got a smile on her face.

After buying BJ in 2009 I had the opportunity to get to know Stephanie Marcum and she really took my riding to the next level. She not only helped me with BJ and other horses I rode but made me an overall smarter barrel racer. I am so fortunate to have had such awesome friends and mentors!

Accomplishments?Right now I am very excited about being accepted into Butler’s Pre-Physician Assistant program in which they accept thirty freshmen each year and I will be starting this fall. As for my horses my main accomplishments have been in the Girls Barrel Racing Association. I was the 3D pole champion in 2007-09, 2D barrel champion in 2008, and reserve 2D barrel champion in 2007. I also show NBHA and have placed in various divisions with year-end awards, at nationals, and at state show. I have been very blessed over my almost nineteen years in-and-out of my show life and give all of the glory to God for my accomplishments.

Favorite horse show and why?NBHA state show! I love the pen and the people! I have never had a trip to state without having the time of my life. It’s fun to have all my horse friends in one place for more than just the normal Saturday-Sunday show. Not to mention the outlet malls are only ten minutes away!

Advice?Life is too short to be anything but happy. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Be the best you can be.

Future? As of right now my plans are to go to Butler this fall and graduate with my master’s degree in their Physician Assistant program in the spring of 2018. After that I hope to work in a big hospital (definitely not living in a big city though, I’ll drive!) and possibly attending medical school after paying off some college loans, and/or working as a PA through med school. Although I will be working with people, I hope to always be around barrel racing no matter how far into the future I look. Besides that, I’ll go wherever God leads me!

Favorite moment showing horses? My favorite moment showing horses was at an IBRA show in Montpelier, Indiana on June 21st one year when I won my first considerable 1D youth class. I can only remember the date because it was my birthday and I was so ecstatic. I came out of the arena, hopped off of my horse and jumped up and down I was so excited.

Have a safe and enjoyable summer !!!

Clint

Clint is a graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie Van-Volkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint be-gan barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, hard to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the Congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes. He placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1D in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Clint also volunteers one day a week at a school in Cincinatti where he spends time tutoring other kids in reading.

The lady of the house took off and went on vacation without me. I couldn’t believe it at first. I mean, she told us all she was leaving and would be gone for a little over a week, but she ALWAYS takes me. She even takes me on the boat when they visit the lake. (I really love the boat!)

This time was different. I really do think she wanted me to go, but she mentioned that because it was so far and she would be riding in an airplane that I would have to stay at home. What a bummer - I thought about pleading with her, “Please, take me with you!” I don’t think it would have done any good....and besides, I really don’t think I would have liked the whole airplane thing. I’ve heard all about the tight quarters with screaming babies and snoring old men and that is just not my cup of tea. So....after some thought, I figured staying home didn’t seem so bad.

I did learn that the reason she needed to go to this faraway place was to bring back the young man

that lives here with us. His name is Garrett. (I’m glad because I like him. I was hoping he’d come back.) You see, Garrett had been already

been gone for a few weeks. It seems he was visiting the girl that lived here with us last year. (Her name was Pauli.) They called her an “exchange student.” I’m not sure what they got in exchange for her coming, but I wish they would have kept her! She had to go back to her home. I really hated to see her leave, she was really nice to me and the other dogs.

Anyway, I figured that while the lady of the house was gone I should step up and take charge of a few things. I mean, I should be able to help out a little, right?

Keeping an eye on Maybelline wasn’t too much trouble. The people bought a pen for her to sleep in when no one was home. Great idea, people! The pen was THE BERRIES! It made my job easy when the man of the house was at work and the little girl (Gracie) was spending time at Grandma & Grandpa’s house with Miss Tilly.

Things actually went pretty smoothly for the most part. I did notice the laundry piling up, but I can’t reach the buttons on the washer and dryer or I would have helped out in that department. (Sorry, Lady.)

I do think that the man of the house and the little girl, Gracie, missed the lady and Garrett quite a bit. They seemed kind of lost without the rest of the family here. To be honest, I did too. I think the one who missed them the most was Maybelline....maybe because she is still a puppy and a little dependent on the lady for everything...I’m not sure. She spent a lot of time “looking” for the lady.

I do know that when they arrived home it was a happy day here at the ranch. Everyone was very happy to see them, including me.

Now that things are mostly back to normal, maybe I can get back to work and get some internet research done.

Rodeo Newsfrom the

Indiana High School Rodeo Association

Nationals, is the word any contestant in high school rodeo loves to hear. That little word tells the contestant their hard work has finally paid off and they are qualified to compete in the biggest

rodeo on dirt ever.

The National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSFR) is the rodeo each and every cowboy and cowgirl dream about competing in. To qualify for the NHSFR you must rodeo with one of the 48 states, Australia, or one of the five providences in Canada. The top four contestants in each of the thirteen events become eligible to compete in the NHSFR.

The NHSFR is a three go rodeo. If you do not know what that means, it means each contestant will compete twice in his or her rodeo event. There are a total of ten performances, 5 mornings and 5 evenings. The contestant will draw one morning performance and one evening perfor-mance in each of the rounds. If the contestant’s total time/points in his

or her event is in the top 20, he or she will compete in the short go. The National Champi-on will be the cow-boy or cowgirl with the best time/points overall.

The NHSFR will air online at www.ihigh.com July 14-20, where you can watch live archives of each perfor-mance. Morning performances will air 9am (11am In-diana time) and evening perfor-mances will air at 7pm (9pm In-diana time). Like the NHSRA on Facebook for up-to-date informa-tion throughout the whole week, and to keep track of the

Indiana members competing you can like the Indiana High School Rodeo Association, also on Facebook.

It is an honor to compete at the NHSFR, representing your state while sharing the love for horses and rodeo with members that share the same feelings. This is where new friends and memories are made. Good luck to all the contestants, may you have safe travels.

I happened to see those words on a church sign while on vacation over the past month. I really got to thinking about that simple statement and how it is such great advice.

We are ALL capable of being a witness. Here is dictionary.com’s definition of the noun “witness:”

wit·ness [wit-nis] 1. an individual who, being present, personally sees or perceives a thing; a beholder, spectator, or eyewitness.2. a person or thing that affords evidence.3. a person who gives testimony, as in a court of law.4. a person who signs a document attesting the genuineness of its execution.5. testimony or evidence: to bear witness to her suffering.

It seems to me from reading the definition(s) above that we are all qualified, in some form or another, to be a witness.

Some of the definitions apply a little more appropriately than others when referring to a “witness” for Christ. Definition #3 seems to stick out a little more to me than the others (although they all apply in their own ways.) “A person who gives testimony” sounds like someone who has enough authority on a subject to be comfortable speaking or answering questions related to the subject.

Are you a qualified witness for Christ? Of course you are! If you are a Christian and have a relationaship with Jesus, then you absolutley have enough experience to be a witness for Him.

If you were called to the stand in a court of law, you could testify and answer questions about your personal relationships and experiences....and you can do the same when given the chance in circumstances that allow for you to share your Christian testimony with others.

We should all be more willing to be a witness everyday. We shouldn’t have to be “put on the stand” to share our testimonies about Jesus and what He means to us.

Witnessing is encouraged throughout scripture.

Acts 22:15You will be his witness to all the people of what you have seen and heard.

On the other hand, the definition for the noun “judge” reads very differently.

judge [juhj] noun1. a public officer authorized to hear and decide cases in a court of law; a magistrate charged with the administration of justice.2. a person appointed to decide in any competition, contest, or matter at issue; authorized arbiter: the judges of a beauty contest.3. a person qualified to pass a critical judgment: a good judge of horses.4. an administrative head of Israel in the period between the death of Joshua and the accession to the throne by Saul.

To be a judge, their are qualifications or “appointments” that are required before being competant to hold the position of “judge.”

According to the scriptures, God is the only one qualified to judge. We are specifically told NOT to judge.

Matthew 7: 1-2Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the same measure you use, it will be measured to you.

So it seems to me that we are much more qualified and even are instructed to be a witness....and on the contrary, we are not qualified and are specifically instructed NOT to judge.

Seems pretty simple to me. Be a witness, not a judge.

Happy Trails & God Bless! Christa

JUST PASSIN’ THROUGH

On the Trail

www.racintoeternity.com

Salvation is a gift and a choice......

Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice. When He was resurrected on the 3rd day, he defeated Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death and acknowledge it with our words. If we believe that and accept Him as our personal savior…we are promised eternal life with Him in Heaven. You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to believe your way there. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are something someone gives to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept that wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you? But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

Belmont Stakes Charity Celebration Raises $400,000 for Equine Research

and Retirement FoundationsThe Belmont Stakes Charity Celebration, held at Bobby Flay’s Bar Americain in New York City Thursday night, raised approximately $400,000, which will be evenly divided between the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation and the Thoroughbred Retirement Founda-tion. Approximately 300 people attended the event.

Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation is the nation’s lead-ing source of private equine research funding and helps all breeds of horses; the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF) is the largest equine sanctuary in the world and is devoted to the rescue, retirement, rehabilitation, and retraining of Thoroughbreds.

The evening featured a live auction and the presentation to Flay of the Earle I. Mack Thoroughbred Champion Award, annually given to an individual for outstanding efforts and influence on Thoroughbred race-horse welfare, safety and retirement.

Among the highlights of the auction:• A 2013 “Breeders’ Cup Extravaganza,” which includes private,

round-trip jet travel from the New York area to Los Angeles, sold for $62,000. The winning bidder was Fred Hertrich III.

• Two “Dream Vacations in Tuscany,” which each feature a one-week stay a farmhouse on the La Foce estate, sold for $25,000 and $24,000. The winning bidders were Bob Masterson and Vin-nie Viola.

• A “Travers Weekend Spectacular,” which featured four nights of luxurious lodging and an owner’s box for five people Friday, Saturday and Sunday, sold for $18,000. The winning bidder was

The winning bidder was Ronald Frankel.

“We are immensely grateful to all of the people and organizations who supported this event,” said Diana Pikulski, vice president of external af-fairs of TRF. “Each of them demonstrated a sincere commitment to the proper care for Thoroughbreds when their racing careers have ended.”

“The many improvements in surgical techniques and disease control through the years have been made possible by equine research, and the success of an event like this enables us to fund additional research that will help all horses in the future,” said Dell Hancock, chairman of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation.

Following is a summary of the other six auction items.• Two tickets to this Sunday’s Tony Awards sold for $4,500 each to

both Evan Eads and Bruce Lunsford.• Richard Meister was the winning bidder ($3,000) for tickets to the

American Music Awards in Los Angeles in November.• Peter Bradley was the winning bidder ($22,000) for a breeding

right to Mineshaft.• Rock Talk Farm was the winning bidder ($20,000) for a breeding

Thoroughbred OwnerView Adds Sec-tions on Veterinary Care and RacetracksOwnerView, the free, informational website developed by The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) to assist prospective, new and current Thoroughbred owners, has added sections devoted to veterinary care and racetracks.

The “Veterinary” section helps owners understand the role of the vet-erinarian in managing their Thoroughbreds; the “Racetrack” section provides a variety of details about virtually every Thoroughbred track in North America.

“The new sections on OwnerView.com contain valuable, factual infor-mation pertaining to the care of Thoroughbreds and the venues at which to race them,” said Gary Falter, vice president of operations for The Jockey Club and project manager for OwnerView.

Within the Veterinary section, visitors can research equine health top-ics, learn about racetrack injuries, become better educated about equine welfare and health considerations, review a list of equine hospitals, search for a veterinarian, and review Q & A in the “Ask a Vet” section.

This new section was developed in partnership with the American As-sociation of Equine Practitioners (AAEP).

“The AAEP’s mission is to improve the health and welfare of the horse and we can do that by providing information to Thoroughbred owners,” said Dr. Scott Hay, chairman of the AAEP’s Racing Committee. “We are proud to be the source of veterinary information for the OwnerView initiative.”

The Racetrack section of OwnerView was developed with input from Thoroughbred owners and several tracks, including Keeneland, NYRA, Woodbine, Del Mar and Arlington Park. This new section lists most Thoroughbred tracks in the U.S. and Canada, grouped by their daily average purse distribution, and provides information such as address, race dates, owner hospitality contact, and links to each track’s website.“By presenting information such as daily average purse distribution, we can help the owner determine venues in which their horses will be com-petitive,” Falter said. “It will also help owners find contact information for all the tracks in one convenient location.”

OwnerView was launched by The Jockey Club and TOBA in May 2012, in the wake of McKinsey & Company’s economic study of the sport that recommended a central resource that would encourage Thor-oughbred ownership and provide accurate information about purchas-ing and owning a Thoroughbred.

OwnerView includes information about trainers, racing syndicates, li-censing, aftercare, and state incentive programs. For more information, visit OwnerView.com.

TOBA, based in Lexington, Ky., was formed in 1961 and is a national trade organization of leading Thoroughbred horse breeders and owners. TOBA’s mis-sion is to improve the economics, integrity and pleasure of the sport on behalf of Thoroughbred owners and breeders. Projects managed by TOBA include the American Graded Stakes Committee, The Racing Game, Sales Integrity Pro-gram, and Claiming Crown. Thoroughbred Charities of America is the charita-ble arm of TOBA. TOBA is the owner of The Blood-Horse Inc. and is represented on the board of directors of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association as a founding member.

Anna Long knew that our mystery puupy could be none other than Bella - our favorite Jack Russell! We’re going to give Anna a FREE subscription for her correct response!

Now we have to make it a little harder....we also want you tell us when and where the picture was taken and the significance of the event? I’ll give you a little hint...it has something to do with how she got her name. (You can find more info on her page at www.thehorseresource.net)

If you know the answers to our Mystery Questions, then send us an email or give us a call to win your choice of a one year subscription to The Horse Resource, a “Horsey Hat” or a “Horsey-T.”

Call 765-744-7363 or email [email protected]

with your answer!

Good luck!

We have almost ran out of photos!.....Please send us your older photos of horsemen and women (and kids) that are still active in the horse busi-ness today. Or if you have pictures of a well known horse or event....that will mix things up a bit. We’re up for some new mysterys if you are!! Keep sending us those photos!! Send via email to [email protected] or mail to 12601 S CR 200 W Muncie, IN 47302
