From these results we can see that the higher amounts of respondents were of the gender female..This may effect the results of the

survey as women are perceived to be less likely to enjoy thrillers than men. However these results have helped us to identity which

gender we are more likely to aimed our thriller on and weather or not the narrative and characters will appeal to their gender. E.g.women are more likely to watch thriller about affairs, psychological family breakdown whereas men are more likely to watch thrillers that

include a lot of violence and weapons. This will help up with what kind of narrative we will us characters that we think will appeal to our

audience. It is interesting to see what kind of thriller women will like as men are usually the gender that are interested in murders,

violence and death. This has helped us establish what kind of themes and conventions we may put into our openings to make it relevant

to a particulate gender or having themes that interest both male and female audience. Being open minded about our audience will help

us develop a good solid narrative and will stop us from being at a disadvantage as we may limit ourselves if we only target it for example

women we wont have a big enough audience.

From these results the highest age group was 13-18.This is the age we expect a lot of younger generation to have accessto watching a lot of films and thrillers. Younger people are more likely to enjoy a thriller as it causes suspense and tension,

they enjoy the thrill of not knowing what to expect and being taken by surprise. They are more open to watching violence

and murders. Deaths as it is exciting to watch and follow. The second highest age group was 41+.They are also more likely

to watch thriller as they have more experience and exposure to early thriller films such as the shining. These sorts of films

may not be scary to us now but 10years ago it would have been classed as brilliant and terrifying. This has helped us to

think of what age group we would like to aim our thriller at. It would be a better chocie if we tried to aim it at all ages

however 13-18 has the biggest market so it would make more sense to aim it specifically at that age group. This may

disadvantage us as focusing on 19-25. 26-40 allows us more freedom to play around with the narrative and characters. As

12-18 we would have to make sure it was appropriate. This will help us research into the type of age range we want to

focus on once we have com up with a solid narrative and if the characters will appeal to a specific age group or not.

    Responses

From these results we can see that the most watched TV programmes are comedy. This can be because people dont want to watch

programmes that remind them of reality and everyday ordinary life it can act as an escapism of real issues. The second highest that

respondents picked was sc-if. Sci-fi links in well with supernatural thrillers, people who are interested in sc-if TV programmes are morelikely to watch a thriller involving things from another world, special effects.TV programmes can be the first step to get people watching

thrillers as we will know what sort of thriller they would watch and how this is by the type of TV they are watching. Drama is a good one as

it draws people into the narrative e.g. eastenders some sort of murder the audience want to know who did it. Dramas encourage the

audience to follow the narrative and characters progression throughout the story. We as the audience get to make our own judgments

and assumptions about the characters making us think ahead of what might happen. This has helped us see what TV prgrammes

encourage people to take an interest in thrillers. It has helped us to think of a genre to focus on e.g. what sort of things to include such as

a death, a lot of dialogue between characters to establish relationships or elements of dark humor.

From these results we found that most people who answered the survey were either unemployed or unemployed students. The

second highest socio economic group were mid level job titles. These two groups are the most likely to take an interest in films andthrillers specifically .The unemployed category means that they have more leisure time and are able to focus on taking an interests

in films and take time watching them. The Mid level category are also more likely to watch thrillers as they have a better appreaction

of the quality and content. They are more exposed to different kind of films and issues, this means they will be more interested in

following the narrative and using their thinking by asking questions, trying to figure the characters out and engage into the story. The

mid level are more likely to be middle class so can afford to pay to go to the cinema. Buy DVDs and renting. The skilled manual and

casual labours are less likely to be interested in thrillers as they have less leisure time and stereotypically would watch films which

are comical and dont acquire much thinking e.g. who is the character why are they their etc.

From the results we cans see that the most well known thriller to our respondents was the dark knight. The narrative is well known

and appeals to a wider audience whereas angles and demons has a smaller audience appeal to it making it less likely to be very

popular. Some of the other thrillers are known but aren't as grasping s they have completely different sub genres. One hour photoand fight club deals with psychological mind set of the characters. E.g. Sid in one hour photo is a stalker fantasizing over a family

he longs to have and fight club he fights with his own mind. All of these examples are different and challenge the audience in

different ways. This has helped us to establish what kind of thriller the audience have watched and engage with. It will help us to

create a narrative that we know the audience will like and follow throughout the opening. The survey gives us the opportunity to

research into theses films and see what kind of differences they have e.g. their sub genres what type of audience we think it will

appeal to such as the gender and age and how we will adapt our thriller to target a specific audience. Overall we knew which film

would have been watched out of our respondents because of it being globalised and well know. However we didnt expect people to

have known one hour photo and Inside man s they aren't very well known .From the results we gathered we will try and make our

narrative different to the rest of the groups so that it sticks out and challenges the audience to ask questions and give their own

perspectives as to what they think will happen next.

    What did you like/dislike?

(Responses) I like the narrative and the characters however it can make me feel uncomfortable.

Storyline, the twist and the jokers evil doings Reference to The Dark Knight

fight club: i like how youre forced to believe tyler durden is real until the end, that it capitalises on the male ego to

fight and prove masculinity. i like the rebellion aspect to the system. one hour photo: its really creepy something

robin williams hasnt really done and its that what makes it so unnatural, the fact this could happen and you see

the extremity when we see his home. in a way you sympathis for his because he is so alone and yet you think its

the loneliness what turned him into a very freaky man. dark knight: i love this film because of the joker, his

characterisation really makes you believe it could be real and the he actually is messed up in the head. the

combination of pyschological torment and action makes a winner :) it pleases all on an individual level, the jokers

invicibility makes it even more terrifying that such a remorseless and destructive man sees to never disappear,

btw the added comedy is realy good it makes the film light hearted yet doesn't detach from the jokers creepy

    nature.

They created a lot of mystery from the beginning and answered it at the end with a twist.

These are the responses which sum up all the responses to this question.

    What did you like/dislike?

(Analysis) These key responses allow us to realise that the storylines and narratives of all the

films which they have watched which were listed are appealing, with specific reference

to twists at the end. This has influenced us to create a storyline which includes a twist

in such a way that it will leave the audience shocked just like a conventional thriller

would do. This will be included in the treatment of the film.

Another thing we have established is that the audiences like a complex character in the

film e.g. The Joker (The Dark Knight) and Sye (from One hour photo). This will effect our production ideas by showing us how important it is to include a

complex main character, and the use of twists in an unexpected way, whilst leaving

questions at the beginning of the film from the first two minutes.

From these results we can see that the two favorite sub genre of a thriller was supernatural and crime. I think that these

two would be the most popular as they take the audience into a another world. The supernatural deals with the world

outside of earth and real life issues this will appeal to an audience as they escape there normal lifestyles to watch

something were it doesnt remind them of there own harsh realities. Crime is interesting to watch as it takes you into the

lives of the characters. E.g. murder story follows all the characters related to the death, tricking the audience into wrong

leads. It is exciting to watch and provides tension and suspense to create atmosphere of mystery. We found that political

and erotic thriller were the 2nd highest sub genre from our poll. Political thriller are great to in rich the audience about

everyday contemporary issues which effect our society and turning them into dark

Why do you like the genre you picked?(responses)

This question refers to the sub-genre they picked in question 6 (results of

which are on the right). They interest me because I watch the news, enjoy crime video games and

am interested in psychological issues. (Crime& Political Thrillers).Suspense is constantly built throughout crime thrillers which is a real

adrenaline rush yet directors can choose to leave it asa cliff hanger or the evil prevailing at the end of the film. (Crime & Action

Thrillers). It makes you think about the characters life and how they got to that

stage(psychological Thrillers). It messes with your head, makes you predict the plot to go one way and

when it doesnt it completely freaks you out. i like films that make me feel

something and that adrenaline from feeling scared or whatever makes it even

more interactive and enjoyable as an audience.(Horror Thriller).

Why do you like the genre you picked?

These responses show that there are certain sub-genres whichaudiences prefer in comparison to others. And this is due to

reasons including other media consumption (reference to first

response), endings being opened or closed e.g. Phonebooth

having an open ending, and depth of characters as a story of their

lives or flashbacks of moments which have made the characters

who they are now, justifying why they do the things they do. Alsounpredictability throughout horror thrillers through the build up of

suspense making it a more compelling experience for the

audience. This will have an effect on our production as it will make us think

about what sub-genre suits the interests of the audience the most.

What is your favourite thriller and why does it

    appeal to you? (responses)

Harry Brown- Because its a British film with a variety of pace through out and

also has a good unexpected twist at the end.

    23. its bare weirdVantage Point The way the thriller used a narrative structure which is not

very conventional to create a suspenseful movie and unveiling the films

mystery by using peoples different points of view.

What is your favourite thriller and why

    does it appeal to you?

This questions identifies what a audience likes about their

favourite thriller, which points out why it is their favourite. One

reason being, the twists at the end to create shock for the

audience because its unexpected. Another thing is the bizarre

storyline of The number 23 which allowed the audience to feel

like theyre watching a film which is very different to the rest, forexample, a twist being that he was the one to write the book that

has now driven him crazy over the number. Vantage Point is also

favourited for its unique style of narrative structure to tell the story

of who shot the president. This is definitely going to positively effect our production because

it has enabled us to realise that films with a unique storyline with alot of unpredictability which have been made to seem predictable

by the red herrings throughout the film to mislead the audience are

successful as they have been favourited by audiences which is the

    aim of a film.

What would you expect and like to see in a thriller?

    (responses)

Good and bad characters and I like to see a twist.lots of tension and creepy stuff like hearing about the killer/pyscho but

never really seeing. I like shots from behind that conceal areas, not

knowing whether theyre behind them or not.

I expect to see suspense, action, fighting, explosions and for once, thebad side winning.

a storyline with a twist which is not predictable and something unique

which stands out from the rest.

What would you expect and like to see in a thriller?

This questions has clearly established what our target audience

want in a thriller. Twists are essential for a thriller, along with

unpredictability. I have also gained a response that they would like to

see the bad side winning, which we will take into consideration

when coming up with ideas and creating the treatment. This will make us decide what conventions of a thriller such as a

twist will be most likely to go into our thriller.A storyline which is complex, and unique will be the next step for

the production thanks to the influence of the answers we have

gained from the primary research carried out.
