And welcome to the July issue of Three Villages

Full speed ahead with Summer!! July is a fun but quieter month. Exams are over (or almost!) and schools

are winding down to the summer siesta. Sports days, school trips and general fun are the order of the day

for our children! Enter one of our competitions this month and the fun could continue, with trips to the

theatre and tickets to The Lookout Discovery Centre up for grabs!

A warm thank you to all of the businesses who are advertising with us and we wish you success from our

directory, whose sole purpose is to bring information to the fingertips of the residents. We have a special

competition for business owners too this month… just take a look at page 50!

We welcome feedback, as always, to help us shape this directory to suit your needs. Please send ideas or

feedback to:

telephone: 01276 504582 mobile: 07947 068211

email: [email protected] web: www.tulippublications.co.uk

And finally here is a fun fact about July - to our

children’s delight it is apparently national

blueberry month, national ice cream month

and national hot dog month!

Until next time, best wishes

Citizen’s Advice Bureau Beware of “Free” Pension Reviews

Be wary if you're contacted out of the blue by phone,

email, text or via an online advert about geLng a 'free

pension review' to 'get be5er returns'. Most of the

companies making these offers haven't been author-

ised by the Financial Conduct Authority, even though

they say they are acng on their behalf. Or companies

may say they're represenng government about free

rerement guidance - an iniave that's not been

launched yet.

What should you do?

If you are contacted by one of these companies, ignore

them. Professional advice on pensions isn't free and

financial advisers authorised by the Financial Conduct

Authority are unlikely to cold call.

These reviews are aimed at geLng you to move money

from an exisng personal or occupaonal pension into

other schemes called self-invested personal pensions

(SIPP) or small self-administered schemes (SSAS). The

pension pot is then typically invested in unregulated

investments like overseas property developments,

forestry or storage units known as store pods. These

are higher risk and you could lose everything you've

invested, reducing your rerement income.

If you invest your pension in one of these schemes you

won't be able to complain to the Financial Ombudsman

Service or get compensaon from the Financial Services

Compensaon Scheme if things go wrong. You are un-

likely to be able to get your money back if you've dealt

with an adviser who isn't authorised by the Financial

Conduct Authority.

Ge,ng financial advice about your pension

If you want to review your pension arrangements, you

should get independent advice from an authorised

financial adviser. Always check that anyone offering

advice or financial services is authorised by the Finan-

cial Conduct Authority. You can search the Financial

Conduct Authority register for authorised advisers at

www.fca.org.uk

If you have already moved your pension and have con-

cerns, contact any authorised companies that were

involved. The Ombudsman might be able to help if you

cannot get the ma5er resolved with those companies.

You can contact the Financial Ombudsman Service for

concerns about authorised companies at www.financial

-ombudsman.org.uk

More informaon

There are massive changes currently under way in

state, workplace and private pensions. One of the big-

gest is that the Government is making it easier for peo-

ple over 55 to withdraw cash from their pension pot –

although tax will need to be paid in many circumstanc-

es. You should also bear in mind that if you are in a final

salary company pension scheme, then you are unlikely

to get be5er returns elsewhere.

Make sure you understand how investments work, the

risks involved and what they mean for you. Your adviser

should consider whether they are suitable for you. For

most individual investors, invesng your pension mon-

ey in unregulated investments is unlikely to be in your

best interests. Consider all investment opons - leaving

your pension pot where it is may be the best decision.

General guidance about pensions and rerement is

available free from the Money Advice Service web site

and online chat service at

www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk or phone 0300 500

3000 (8-8 Mon-Fri, 9-1 Sat). More specific free guidance

on pensions and the changes being made is available

from the Pensions Advisory Service at

www.pensionsadvisoryservice.org.uk or phone 0845

601 2923 (9-5 Mon-Fri).

At a meeng at the House of Commons on

Wednesday 21st May 2014 a5ended by

representaves of The Windlesham Society,

Windlesham Parish Council and Michael

Gove (MP) it was announced by Robert

Goodwill (MP) that all 8 lanes of the M3

Smart motorway from Juncon 2 to Juncon 4a would now

be resurfaced with the new quieter road surface. This work

will take place at the same me as the Smart Motorway

project avoiding future disrupon.

Graham Bullen (Windlesham Society) and Conrad Sturt

(Windlesham Society and Windlesham Parish Council ) have

worked relessly over the past two years to secure the

quieter road surface for the residents of Windlesham,

Lightwater, Bagshot and Surrey Heath. This has only been

possible with the support of Michael Gove (MP Surrey

Heath), local resident Peter Grainger and key members of

Surrey County Council and Surrey Heath

Borough Council who have supported the

campaign.

Your grass should also be growing on strongly by

now and a few little tips to keep the grass greener

for longer. I personally always cut the grass a little

higher as we head towards the height of summer

you will be surprised how much a couple of extra

centimetres can keep the grass that bit greener and

healthy. Although you may need to cut it a bit more

often the extra leaf on the grass will help it absorb

more moisture when it rains or in the morning dew, a

good summer feed will also do the power of good

greening it up and building the root structure. Many

also like to give the grass a good go with a sprinkler

(as long as the hosepipe bans are not in force)

which all good but when doing it always water when

the heat of the day has gone and the sun going

down, I often see people watering at all times of the

day and this is often a waste of time and water.

In the borders your shrubs should be putting on

growth for next year’s flowers so only cut back now if

dead/diseased are present or for practical reasons

i.e. overhanging etc.

Down The Veg Plot

On the veg plot everything should be full of life and

you should have eaten plenty of your produce by

now whether it be some tasty New Potatoes or some

Lettuce with some Radishes, you may well have

also had some early Carrots or Peas. Depending on

if you had some way of getting an early start via a

heated greenhouse or other method you could be

munching away on a whole variety of veg by now,

but remember on things like Lettuce, Radishes and

Carrots to keep up with you repeat sowings every

two weeks or so to keep a fresh supply coming. I

had my first Strawberry from my plot the other day

and very nice it was too!

The wildlife in the garden will also be in full flow now

so make sure those bird baths are full and the feed-

er stocked up. It also means that some of the more

troublesome parts of nature i.e. pests will be munch-

ing on your plants, veg and fruit or digging up your

prize plants. There are countless different ways of

dealing with these problems that would take up

countless pages but my only tip would be on these

matters is prevention is better than any type of

spraying etc. Admittedly sometimes you can’t stop

some attacks to your garden but generally speaking

the sooner you react the less damage is done, and

there are many effective non pesticide remedies to

most problems i.e. slug pellets can be effective but

wandering round your pots of an evening picking the

slugs and snails off your plants is just as effective,

cheaper and far better for the other creatures in your

garden and the environment.

That’s all for this edition but remember enjoy your

garden!

Until next time DanDanDanDan

As we head into the summer months its anyone’s guess as to what the

weather has in store for us we have had a nice bit of sun in early June alt-

hough the rain was never far away! With the changing climate we are all

going to have to change our ways to accommodate the wider variations

that seem to happen, even the seasons can’t be relied on any more. The

problems we have at this point will have started when the Victorians start-

ed burning fossil fuels and the Industrial Revelation was born! The prob-

lems are accumulative so things will probably get worse before they get

better but nature adapts and we must do the same to.
