The Kokomo boys basketball team will play their fifth game of the season when they travel to

Lebanon Saturday to take on the Tigers.

Both Kokomo and Lebanon will play tonight. The Kats have McCutcheon on its schedule and

Lebanon will play at Western Boone.

The Tigers will take a 2-2 record into tonight’s game. They are 1-1 in games at home.

The Boone County boys lost their first two games this season, but have been victorious in their

last two.

Lebanon has had three very close games this season. Their two losses have both been by two

points, with the season opener at Hamilton Heights going to overtime before being decided. The

Tigers one ‘easy’ game came against Indiana Math and Science, where the Tigers won going

away by 25 points.

The Tigers have scored over 60 points in three of their four games. They average 60.3 points

per game, while allowing 54.5.

Kokomo has yet to score 60 points in a game. The most the Kats have scored this season is 55

against Western in the season opener. The Wildkats average 50.7 and give up 54.0 points per

game.

The Lebanon roster includes five seniors, a junior, three sophomores, and a freshman.

The five players that started against Kokomo in the Lebanon Holiday Tournament last

December all return for Lebanon this year. The five accounted for 89% of the Tiger scoring in

that game, 32 of the 36 points, led by Michael Reese’s 13.

Jackson Richards is the lone starter returning from the tournament game with Lebanon. He and

Bobby Wonnell both saw over 20 minutes of game time, while Rajon Sellers and Masiyah

Dowsey both played less than two minutes. Wonnell as the only one of those four to score, and

he had six points.

The Tigers have had losing records in each of their last two seasons, including a 9-15 mark last

year.

The Sagarin Ratings have Kokomo as the 119th best team in Indiana and the 67th best in Class

4A. The Tigers are listed as the 232nd best in the state and the 66th best in Class 3A.

John Harrell’s website predicts a 57-53 Wildkat win.

For the last three years, Kokomo has played in the Lebanon Holiday Tournament, where they

had a combined record of 6-3. This year the Kats will host the Phil Cox Memorial Tournament

over the holidays.

Kokomo and Lebanon have one common opponent this season in Western. The Kats downed

the Panthers by five, 55-50, in their season opener and, four days later, Western defeated

Lebanon 44-42.

Saturday’s game will be the 58th meeting between the two schools on the hardwood.

Kokomo holds a 35-22 advantage in the series.

Lebanon won the first five meetings (and seven of the first eight) in the series, which dates back

to the 1910-11 season. Lebanon was the state runner-up in 1910-11 and then won the state title

in 1911-12.

Kokomo has won the last five games in the series and 13 of the last 14.

The last Lebanon win in the series came on December 5, 2015, when the Tigers won 63-61 in

Rosenstihl Gymnasium. That was the season opener for Kokomo, whose year started late

because of the football team playing for a state championship at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Kats,

who were coached that night by interim Phil Cox (subbing for a suspended Matt Moore), were

led by Jordan Matthews’ 17 points and Marcelle Kenner’s 14. Lebanon’s Trevor Lakes led all

scorers with 23 to go with his 10 rebounds.

This year’s Lebanon squad has five players averaging over 7.5 points per game, topped by the

14.3 ppg of Carson Burtron. The 6’2” senior guard had a 20-point, 11-rebound effort against

Crawfordsville last Friday. A veteran of 80 varsity games in his four seasons, Burtron averaged

10.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 1.5 steals per game last year as a junior.

Michael Reese, a 6’3” senior forward averages 13.3 points and a team leading 7.5 rebounds per

game. He had 27 points in the season opener, scored 13 points and had 13 rebounds in the

second game, and then has combined for 13 points and eight rebounds in his last two games.

Reese averaged 11.3 points per game last season and has played in 51 career games.

Albert Hendrix replaced Tom Johnson as the head coach of the Tigers in the 2010-11 season

and has a 122-100 record in his 10 years heading into Friday’s game with Western Boone.

Hendrix, who has five winning seasons in nine tries, is 1-10 in games against Kokomo, 1-5

against the Kats at Rosenstihl Gymnasium, and is 0-4 against Bob Wonnell-coached Kokomo

teams.

Kokomo outpointed Lebanon 18-3 in the first quarter and never trailed in taking third

place in the Lebanon Holiday Tournament with a 48-36 victory.

The Wildkats led 25-19 at the half and were up 35-27 heading into the final quarter.

The Kats offense shot 59% in the first two quarters and then upped it to 62% after

intermission. While shooting so well from the field, Kokomo made just 11 of 17 free

throws for 61%.

Deonta Chamberlain had a superb game for the Wildkats. The 6’3” senior made all

nine of his field goal attempts and swished his only free throw for a game high 19

points. He completed his double-double with 12 rebounds. He was the only Kokomo

player to reach double figures.

Michael Reese had 13 points for the Tigers, who had six three-pointers in the game.

KHS Student-Athlete of the Week

CHLOE McCLAIN

Chloe, a sophomore on the girls basketball team, set a career high with a 29-point

effort against Lafayette Jeff in the Lady Kats 66-50 win. The 5’7” guard had an 18-

point third quarter, which alone surpassed her career best of 17 set a year ago against

Lewis Cass. McClain followed that game with another great effort, matching her

career best of 29 points and establishing a new best of nine rebounds against Peru.
