The Thornton Water Project proposes to construct a single pipeline that would deliver water purchased by the city in the mid-1980s.

On Monday, July 9, in front of a crowd of over one hundred people, city of Thornton Mayor Heidi Williams and Thornton Water Project staff made their long-awaited presentation to the Larimer County Board of County Commissioners, requesting approval of its 1041 Pipeline Permit Application for construction of the Thornton Water Project pipeline in Larimer County.

Denver Premium Outlets Update Denver Premium Outlets in Thornton has unveiled its initial list of tenants. The 330,000-square-foot outlet mall at I-25 and 136th Avenue. “The Outlets will be home to 80 tenants,” says Thornton Economic Development Director John Cody. “You’ll see big names including Kate Spade, Nike, Coach, Armani Exchange, and Banana Republic.” Denver Premium Outlets in Thornton is scheduled to open in September.

‘Set the Pace’ and Tackle Speeding in Your Neighborhood School is almost back in session and there will be children of all ages walking and riding their bikes to class. “Make sure you keep an eye out in your communities for the extra pedestrian traffic,” says Thornton Police Officer Matt Barnes. “If you find that speeding a concern in your neighborhood, check out our iwatch Speed Awareness Program.” The Traffic Engineering Division started this program to educate drivers and make combating neighborhood speeding a community effort.

The program addresses speeding through the three ‘E’s — Educate, Engineer and Enforce. “It’s important to educate people about the impact speeding has in the community so they can ‘set the pace’ for other drivers,” says Barnes. “Then, if necessary, engineering efforts such as speed cushions or monitoring signs might be employed as well as police enforcement.” If your community is interested in join the iwatch effort — it’s easy to sign up. First, your neighborhood agrees to be our partner. We ask that 50 percent of the residents in a targeted neighborhood agree to participate and sign the iwatch pledge. By signing the pledge community members are:

• Willing to report alleged speeders and provide Thornton Police with the information. • Set a designated contact or contacts to help maintain neighborhood participation. • Distribute iwatch brochures to all the homes in their neighborhood. • Provide speed reduction reminders in your HOA newsletter, website and other publications.

Get into the Swing of Things at the Updated Thorncreek Golf Course

Thorncreek Golf Course finally reopened on July 22, after undergoing a years long improvement project, with a new look and new amenities. “The improvements replaced an irrigation system that had reached the end of its useful life,” says Thornton Capital Projects and Planning Manager Diane Van Fossen. “You’ll see improvement in the pace of play and a course that’s more playable.” The updates also included a 600 square foot clubhouse addition, a larger north patio, as well as a remodel and renovation to the existing 4,344 square foot structure. “The goal is to allow patrons to enjoy the western views from the clubhouse and enhance the interior amenities such as the restrooms and kitchen,” says Thorncreek Golf Course Professional Chris Swinhart. Golfers will also see new green complexes, resurfacing to tee surfaces, drainage improvements, reshaping of selected holes, new bunkers, a new irrigation system and expanded and deepened irrigation lake, soil preparation, concrete cart path relocation, two running water restrooms and replacement and installation of grass. Do You Know the Golden Rules of Recycling?

It seems easy to recycle, just throw it in the green bin. But, there are three golden rules to follow to make sure that your items can be recycled with your Thornton curbside service.

1. No Plastic Bags: Don’t put your recyclables in a plastic bag. Just toss them loosely into the green bin. Bagged items do not get recycled. Plastic bags, such as grocery bags, also do not belong in the bin as they can get caught in the sorting system at the recycling facility. They can be dropped off at your nearest supermarket for recycling.

2. Know Before You Throw: What you toss in the container really does matter. Contamination tends to change seasonally and summer brings more yard waste, hoses, and food scraps that do not belong in the recycling stream.

3. If You Don’t Know, Don’t Throw: If you are unsure of what items are eligible to be placed in the city of Thornton recycling container, visit cityofthornton.net/trashrecycling and look for the One Container flier.

Keep these three simple rules in mind when you recycle, and ensure a green future for us all.
