Around 140 members of Thorley U3A and the Herts & Soul Community Choir got together to dance the night away to Big Band music at the end of June.

The fabulous Umbrella Big Band is made up of 15 musicians who were joined by two singers. They started off the night with popular melodies from the 1940s – probably the sort of songs our parents danced to!

Message from our Chair

Gosh it's a busy time of year! The amount of things going

on has given me a bit of a challenge.... how to squeeze in all your pictures and articles into this issue. But what a wonderful problem to have!

As I write this, many of you are enjoying the U3A holiday to Normandy and I'm told that the outing organised by Sylvia Poole to Fiddler on the Roof was a wonderful night out. The U3A Singers' summer concert was on one of the hottest nights, but was great fun nonetheless.

Please keep sharing your photos and reports about the activities you are doing with Thorley U3A. The next deadline for the Newsletter will be September 3 and I'm looking forward to hearing from you.

Hello again.I hope you are all coping with the

hot summer weather. I tend to get everything done first thing in the morning, then draw all the curtains, shut the windows and hibernate until late afternoon, when I start the plant-watering regime.

We have had another couple of months of interesting outings and events with various groups.

The outing that especially stands out for me was the trip to the Savill Gardens at Windsor with their stunning rhododendrons. We are very lucky to have such wonderful places to visit.

Unfortunately we are struggling with some groups, either through lack of support or difficulties in finding leaders.

Please, if you want these groups to survive, support them in any way you can. Like the old saying: "Use it or lose it!"

We are coming up to the main holiday time so I expect some of you will be off to pastures new or helping with grandchildren. Whatever you are doing, have a lovely time and I'll look forward to seeing you at the monthly meetings in the coming months.

NEW MEMBERS COFFEE MORNINGFollowing on from the success of the New Members Coffee

Morning in February, it has been decided to hold another one.All new members will be welcome to come for coffee at

10.30am on Tuesday, September 3, at the Coach & Horses pub in Thorley Street.

Around 30 people came to the last event, giving them an opportunity not only to meet committee members and others from Thorley U3A, but in some cases also to link up again with lost friends from their past – some even from school days!

DISCOUNT TRAVEL CARDS FOR MEMBERSPremier Travel is offering Thorley U3A members Partnership

Cards which will give up to £100 discount on new holiday bookings, subject to a minimum spend. The discount can't be combined with any other Premier Travel offer or discount.

Cardholders will also receive preferential rates on foreign currency from the firm, with no minimum spend required.

Premier Travel is a privately-owned, independent travel company with 18 branches, including one in South Street, Bishop's Stortford, which is providing the discount cards to our members.

Cards will be available from Sylvia Poole, who hopes to be able to bring them to our next meeting on August 5.

July's talk: From Milton Keynes to MississippiSinger and song-writer Saffron Summerfield shared stories of her travels with her guitars

Saffron Sunshine (aka Summerfield) took us through her life as a performer and, dear Members, the time just flew.

The young Saffron, in the then village of Milton Keynes, decided she wanted to become an acoustic guitarist, starting with

classical training at the Guildhall School of Music. She gave us a snippet of that world, the gentle “Wilson’s Wilde”, but it was other guitar genres that drew her.

Starting with the Cellar Folk Club in Soho, she entered circles that took her as far as New

Zealand and included the great and the good of many different musical styles: Harry Secombe, Joan Armatrading, Long John Baldry, (who was VERY tall and was half of the inspiration for the stage name of Elton John) and so many others, including Cream on occasion. All the big names need support acts and accompanists, and Saffron had the inclination and ability to acquire the guitar skills to fit all those bills. We were treated to examples of Folk

(British and American), Pop, Blues, Bottleneck Guitar...

It’s Blues that seems to be her best love. When Long John Baldry invited her to join the Hoochy Coochy Men, she just put her UK affairs in order and

went off to Mississippi. And we learned all about

Bottleneck Blues. It’s a slide guitar style, originally using the long glass neck, broken off a beer bottle and fitted over the little finger.

Nowadays, guitar bottleneck slides are commercially made by Pyrex... but it’s still a lovely, mournful noise.

We had a beautiful afternoon. Thank You Saffron!

THREE MENOPAUSALMAIDS IN JUNE

In June, we welcomed three local ladies who are becoming stalwarts of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Carol Parradine, Sue Last and Lesley-Anne Webb delivered some of their recent sketches of life as you reach a certain age.

With costumes ranging from Disney Princesses to Ladies that Lunch, they were as entertaining as they looked.

Difficult to photograph a group without someone closing their eyes or having a joke! Here we are on a path across a field, carefully sprayed to mark our way. Hadham Hall was also visible from here.

Rain held off for the Strollers as they checked out part of the building site of Stortford Fields – I call it "WAS Stortford Fields" as there's not much countryside left there now. We found that, thankfully, Hoggate's Wood still survives.

Returning via Wickham Hall and Hadham Park, we also noted the soon-to-change area where a roundabout for the new bypass is to start. Thank you John Newman for leading once again! Liz Roper

U3A SINGERS IN CONCERT

It was one of the warmest nights of the year for the U3A Singers' summer concert on June 29, but the choir put on a great show despite the heat.

The Singers continue to grow in number and there are now 33 of them, drawn from both Thorley and Bishop's Stortford U3As.

Their 'Golden Memories' themed

programme this year included songs from musicals as well as gospel and popular music. And, as always, the audience got the opportunity to join in too, with well-known songs like Que Será, Será and Yesterday.

The choir is under the musical direction of Sue Hickman and is accompanied by Susie Savage.

The Singers also performed for residents of Premier Court in July and will be singing at Holy Trinity Church on the evening of September 14.

DEFIBRILLATOR TRAININGOur chair Linda Ketteridge has organised a

session for people to learn how to use defibrillators, the equipment that can help save people's lives if they have a heart attack.

It will be held at the Emmaus Centre at the back of the Barnabas Centre in Church Lane, Thorley on Saturday September 14 from 10am-12.00pm.

All are welcome to attend.

VISITING THE SAVILL GARDENS

Garden Group 1 organised a coach trip to the Savill Gardens on the edge of Windsor Great Park when it was full of colourful rhododendrons, azaleas and hydrangeas.

Many of the group came back with beautiful examples of the plants from the garden centre. The visit was followed by a boat trip from Runnymede, past Windsor Castle, with a delicious cream tea. Pictures: Liz Happer & Linda Ketteridge

The first London Walk this year had a different flavour. Instead of walking and looking at lots of places, we visited two interesting buildings which you can only see as part of a group guided tour, or in September as part of Open House London weekend.

There are 110 Livery Companies in the City of London. About 40 still have their own halls. Many were destroyed in the Great Fire in 1666 and many more were destroyed in the Blitz of the Second World War.

Of the remaining 40, several can be booked for guided tours. The Carpenters – properly the Worshipful Company of Carpenters – was our first visit of the day. The archivist gave us a fascinating talk about the history of the carpenters and allied skills like furniture makers.

She told us about their role today, charitable activities and a lot more about the City of London.

I should add that we ended the tour with excellent coffee and biscuits, as well as a free booklet.

Off we then went back to Liverpool Street Station and Spitalfields for lunch. The idea was to walk around the area and take in some more history.

Our next visit to Sandys Row Synagogue proved equally interesting. The building itself started life in 1766 as a Huguenot Chapel. The plan was to spend about 45 minutes here but this visit lasted for 1½ hours. The warden told us about the history of the area, with all the changing communities over 200 years, and a lot about Judaism as well.

Although we did not have any time to see Christ Church, a Nicholas Hawksmoor church, and the streets of Huguenot houses close by, that could be another day out in London as the area is so close to Liverpool Street Station.

Family History GroupThe Family History Group

would like to say a big thank you to Mike Norris who has led them for many years. He has now moved away to Suffolk. His knowledge and expertise will be much missed but we hope to see him on his occasional visits back to Bishop’s Stortford.

The group continues to meet at the Emmaus Centre, from 2.00-4.00pm, on the last Friday of the month.

Some members will be giving talks about their own research – volunteers only, it’s not a condition of membership!

We also plan to have occasional genealogy speakers as well as workshops to share resources and help one another progress further.

Sue Swan and Barbara Jacobs are co-ordinating the group. Please contact them if you are interested in joining.Sue: [email protected]: [email protected]

***********It's not just the Family History

Group who will miss Mike and his wife Ireen...

Mike also led the Ten Pin Bowling Group at Harlow every Wednesday. This has now been taken over by Peter Ellis – [email protected]

Meanwhile Ireen ran the Cribbage Group. This too has a new leader: John Glazebrook – [email protected]

We hope Mike and Ireen will be very happy in their new home. And many thanks to those who have taken over the running of their groups.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN A BOOK GROUP?Do you enjoy reading books then discussing them

with a friendly group over a cuppa? If so, you may be able to join Book Club 2, which has space for a couple of extra members. They meet once a month

on the second Tuesday of the month. Contact the group leader Kim Shaw at [email protected], 01279 501362, or Groups Co-ordinator Rosemary Hoskins at groups.thorley [email protected].

On a sunny day in July, 15 walkers car-shared to the station at Wrabness. With only one train an hour this is not a commuter station. What it does have however is a community-run general store. The staff were happy to let us have use of the toilet and Frances felt obliged to buy a large bag of lemon sherbet sweets to sustain us.

We were soon at Manningtree ready to walk the nine miles back to our cars. After a detour around the building site for the station car park extension and being guided by a man and his two dogs through the new housing estate, we reached the waterfront of the River Stour estuary.

We passed the remains of a Robert Adams church and read a notice about the historical activities of a local man, Matthew Hopkins the Witchfinder General.

We then followed the Essex Way inland through

lovely countryside to reach our lunch stop in a Community Centre area with picnic tables by a playground. Richard had a go on the swings; no one ventured on the zip wire.

After lunch we followed the Essex Way through a large field of onions where we had to dodge the vast jet of water that was irrigating the field. We reached the waterfront again to find the tide was in and the water glistening in the sunshine.

We eventually left the Essex Way to walk uphill past Grayson Perry’s House for Essex to return to our cars. Then back to the community shop for ice creams!

All of the activities and groups in Thorley U3A are entirely dependent on the wonderful people who run them.

It's very rewarding and not too difficult to be a group leader – and you can get lots of support

and back-up if you need it from your committee. If you have an interest or a skill that you would

like to share or explore with other members, please contact Groups Co-ordinator Rosemary Hoskins at [email protected]

YOU CAN NOW PAY SUBS BY BACS...

As we reported in the last Newsletter, your committee has decided to reduce membership subs to just £13 from September.

And to make life even easier, you can now pay your subs electronically from your bank account (Bacs).

If you want to pay by Bacs, the payment should go to: HSBC Sort code: 40-12-03 Account: 11623761

As the reference, please put your membership number (and name too if you have room).

Only subs can be paid by Bacs. Please do not make any other payments in this way.

If you pay by Standing Order, please remember to change your payment this year to £13.

COULD YOU RUN A GROUP?
