RHRCC sponsors Heart Disease and Stroke Awareness Month

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United Stales and strokes are not far behind as the nation's third leading killer. Ken-tucky ranks fifth in the nation for heart disease related deaths and nearly 158,000 people are killed each year by strokes.

Taking these statistics into ac-count, Rockcastle Hospital and Res-piratory Care Center, Inc. (RHRCC) has designed August as Heart Dis-ease and Stroke Awareness Month.

"We wantto educate people about heart disease and stroke, and let them know that these health risks can be avoided with properpreventive mea-sures," said Dr. Karen Saylor of RHRCC.

To aid in the prevention process, RHRCC will be offering free choles-terol screenings in the labon the main floor of the hospital located at 14S Ncwcomb Avenue. The screenings will be offered August 24-28 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The screening^ take only 10 to 15 minutes and con-. sist of having blood drawn from the arm.

"These screenings are an opportu-nity for Rockcasde Countians to find out if they are at risk for heart disease or stroke," said Larry Bullock, direc-tor of laboratory services at RHRCC. "Appointments are not necessary, but to ensure an accurate reading, par-ticipants should not eat or drink any-thing other than water for at least 14 hours before the screening."

The results will be mailed to par-ticipants' family physicians so they can be guided on the right path to-ward prevention. RHRCC will keep all results confidential.

In addition to the screenings, par-ticipants can stop by display tables in the hospital lobby or lab to obtain more information about heart disease and stroke throughout the week. To thank participants, RHRCC will give away a miniature flashlightkey chain or baseball cap to everyone receiving a free cholesterol screening.

"It is extremely important to con-trol yourcholesterol level to prevent heart disease and stroke." Saylor said. "A cholesterol reading of200or more is high and should be reduced with a change in diet and increased exer-cise, as directed by your physician."

The Facts about Heart Disease and Stroke:

A heart attack occurs when a part of the heart is blocked. Arteries clogged with a buildup of cholesterol often cause this blockage. Blood that tries to flow through the arteries can form a clot, clots block blood from reaching a part of the heart, causing it to shut down.

A stroke occurs when circulation of blood to the brain is blocked or significantly decreased. As a result brain cells are left without oxygen, which can lead to severe damage or death of those cells. Symptoms of a stroke can include sudden numbness of the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body; sudden blurred vision; sudden severe headache; or sudden dizziness and confusion. The blockage can be caused by the move-ment of a clot from one part of the body to the brain or neck, the forma-tion of a clot in the brain or neck, or a severe narrowing of an artery lead-ing to the brain. lesterol level, Saylor recommended the following guidelines to help pre-vent heart disease and stroke:

• Treat high blood pressure. Con-sult with your physician to determine a treatment plan.

• Maintain a diet low in salt, cho-lesterol and fat.

• Quit smoking. • Only drink alcohol in modera-

tion. • Get plenty of exercise. • Always visityourdoctorforregu-

lar checkups. • If you arc diabetic, follow your

doctor's order carefully to control it.

Rockcastle County producers who have suggested losses from natural disaster during the time period of November 27,1997 through May 1, 1998 may be eligible to receive pay-ments under the Livestock Indem-nity Program, Dairy Production Dis-aster Assistance Program and Tree Assistance Program. Eligible produc-ers are those who: own a substantial beneficial interest in an eligible dairy/ livestock operation or eligible tree and vineyard grower, suffered a fi-nancial risk in the eligible operation, suffered the loss as a direct result of the natural disaster (snow storm on Feb. 2-4,1998) for which the Presi-dent Declaration was made for Feb. 2-4,1998 and are a citizen of, or legal resident aliens in the U.S. Producers MUST provide documentation to support loss claims and file the appli-cation during the sign-up period from July 6th-Scptember 1, 1998 at the FSA county office. school to begin and things arc al-ready underway. Our annual Back-To-School Night was held last Thurs-day and attended by many parents and students. Emergency cards arc espe-cially important so that we know who to call in case of an emergency, who is allowed to pick your child up from school,allergies your child may have, etc. Please send those back to school
