THE HAPPIEST DAY OF MY LIFE

We are off to the races already this year; with Super Bowl Sunday this weekend, and Valentine’s Day

just around the corner, my goodness, January is already over! Yes, 2013 has arrived and is moving full

steam ahead! Since the years fly past us so quickly, I was doing a little thinking the other day about

memories or events that have shaped my life.

We all have memories that stick with us forever. Looking back, I remember the day I was dropped off

at Boarding School and my parents drove away. I was 12 years old, in a strange town, many miles from

home and didn’t know a soul. I was given a locker and a bed, and left to fend for myself in an all-boys

hostel. I had never felt so alone and so scared. Somehow I made it through the first few weeks, and

over time it got easier. Looking back, I had a great five years at Boarding School and made friendships

that will last a lifetime. The experience certainly shaped who I am today.

The next big event in my life was the Army. In South Africa, Military Service was compulsory back then,

and every Caucasian male had to do two years of service. Thankfully, having been to Boarding School, I

knew how to take care of myself. No jokes, it was not a place for the light hearted. I saw many horrific

things during combat that thankfully, most people in the U.S. will never have to witness.

Shortly after leaving the Army, I remember heading off to travel the world for two years with a plane

ticket and $1,000 in my pocket. I had no idea how I was going to survive overseas for two years with no

money and no job. Yet what a wonderful experience it turned out to be!

My next big event was starting my first business. I did it with two friends and a vision that we could

make it work. We sold it five years later for a nice chunk of change, and I never looked back. I was from

then on, an entrepreneur for good!

I remember deciding to leave South Africa to go to the Caribbean and Captain a Charter yacht in the

British Virgin Islands. Having Robert De Niro on my boat for 10 days, and spending the day with Sir

Richard Branson and his wife on Necker Island, amongst many other experiences, was incredible. WOW!

My next big event was deciding to move to America. I am now a citizen of the U.S.A and have been

here for 10 glorious years. I remember the early days, when we started TheHomeMag. Our only graphic

designer was located in South Africa. We started the business using only a fax machine with a 10KB

upload speed. Many, many all-nighters were spent working in the office, taking turns sleeping on the

floor.

Looking back now, I wonder where I got the courage or energy to do all these things. I’m not particularly

brave, nor am I smarter than anyone else. I think I’ve just always been driven by a challenge, and the

belief that I can do anything that I set my mind to!

But should you ask me which events stands out above all else, that would be easy! I have two. My

happiest day was when I walked down the aisle to marry my wife, Debbie. I remember almost every

moment of that day and how we felt: Joy; exhilaration; and a great anticipation of what lay ahead for us.

My other great event was when my daughter, Tayla, was born. Our lives have never been the same since.

Being a parent is something else indeed! Each day you watch this little person grow and change beyond

anything you could ever have hoped for. What a spectacular experience parenthood is. What a blessing!

I know you’ve heard this from me before, but, “Happy is the man who wants what he has.” Looking

forward to the coming year, I have no idea what lies ahead. But I do know I am happy, and am loving my

day-to-day life here in the U.S.A. Being an entrepreneur, I always expect blue skies, and believe things

can only get better!

With Valentine’s just around the corner, I know I will celebrate it with my two best girls! They inspire

me to be better; they make my heart skip a beat; and they can make me cry or laugh out loud! My

wish to all of you is that you grab hold of every moment on Valentine’s and make it “the best day in the

history of the world!” Let your significant other know how you feel about them and have an awesome

Valentine’s Day!
