In the Catholic Church, there are two types of deacons: a transitional deacon is a man who is studying for the priesthood; usually six months prior to his ordination as a priest, he is ordained as a transitional deacon. This ministry has traditionally been regarded as the final stepping-stoneto priesthood. Most Catholics understand that. The other type of deacon is a permanent deacon. These men are ordained as deacons, but do not go on to ordination to the priesthood – instead, they remain as deacons. So a permanent deacon is an ordained minister of the Church, the same as a priest. We deacons are not less-ordainedthan priests, as some people think! Both priests and deacons receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders. But we permanent deacons are not ordained to priesthood, but rather to ministry and service. Deacons are not meant to replace priests, neither are we meant to replace the People of God in their mission of witnessing to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We are called to service in collaboration with each other. Most permanent deacons are married, with families. This helps us to bring a different perspective to ordained ministry in the Catholic Church. Our diaconate ministry is threefold: Word, Liturgy, and Charity. Word: proclaiming the Gospel and preaching the homily; Liturgy: assisting at Eucharist, baptizing, presiding at funerals, officiating at Catholic weddings, leading liturgies such as benediction, and providing pastoral care for the elderly, the disadvantaged, or wherever the needs of the Church or people are greatest. As ordained ministers, we can bless people and objects of devotion, the same as a priest can bless. There is no difference between us with regards to blessing! Charity: many deacons work beyond the parish in the wider community in chaplaincy or secular jobs, which helps us to be a bridgebetween the parish and the wider community. Worldwide there are more than 45,000 permanent deacons, and we are the fastest-growing religious group in the world. We are increasing in number annually, even faster than priests. In Australia, there over 200 deacons, with many men in formation in approximately half the dioceses around the country. There are currently 19 deacons in the Brisbane archdiocese. May God bless both Adrian and Ernesto, and their families. ORDINATION TO THE DIACONATE

CHRISTMAS ASSISTANCE

“St Joseph’s Conference prepared 67 applications for Children’s Education Fund 2021 helping 146 children in this area. On last year’s cal-culation this will be a request of around $38,400 for help with back to school costs for these families. Last year we made 35 applications so this year it is significantly higher. Many thanks to the hard-working Conference members who put the applications together”.

God of all life,

Your son called us to be compassionate,

just as You are compassionate.

And so we pray: For our generous Earth, Who, even when mistreated, continues to nourish and

sustain us. May we grow in mutual care.

For our suffering peoples, Who, even when facing injustices, teach us resilience and hope.

May we grow in mutual care.

For each one of us, Who, in times of vulnerability, draws on divine love and strength.

May we grow in mutual care.

For our prison ministries, Which, in times of change, find new ways of reaching out and in.

May we grow in mutual care.

And may we be blessed and inspired As we hear these words anew:

“For you had compassion for those who were in prison.”1

In the name of Jesus, gentle and humble of heart,

Amen. 1 Heb 10:34

TASTER FOR THE FIRST SPIRITUAL EXERCISES OF ST IGNATIUS

Year 7 students are to be commended for their reverence and maturity in keeping alive the Catholic Culture at St John’s. This was a teaching liturgy, where Deacon Tim explained the various parts of the liturgy, the symbols used and their meanings, and the actions and reading used during the liturgy. He then also answered a number of questions from Year 7 students. Thanks to Deacon Tim for generously giving up his time.
