Dear brothers and sisters, The Lenten season is a time of conversion. The church invites us to trust in the redeeming forgiveness of God. The pillars of our Lenten discipline are Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving. We have seen in the Gospel this Sunday, Jesus and the Samaritan woman. The act of giving has brought conversion for her and her entire community. For a people living in a desert land where good water was scarce, living water, such as that found in Jacob’s well, was a blessing. The living water, which we would call “fresh water”, that bubbled from the rock after Moses struck it, revived a people dying of thirst in the desert. In our world today, people are dying from thirst and starvation. They are cut off from fresh water and food, because of man-made disaster. We are able to help these people and communities with our Prayers and Almsgiving through Project Compassion. Traditionally, both the rock of water in the desert and Jacob’s well have been symbols of God showing his mercy to us in the Mass. It is here Christ gives us his life, that we may have life. (Oscar J Miller) Our Sunday Mass should be a refreshment and rejuvenation for us. Like the woman in the gospel coming to Jacob’s well for good refreshing, life-sustaining water, we should come to Sunday Mass with the same eagerness. Then, perhaps, we could leave Mass renewed in faith that here God has once more reached into our lives. From this living water of the Body and of Blood Christ, we should have the energy and enthusiasm to tell all whom we meet: “This is the one you are looking for. He is the Saviour of the World.” We should leave Mass like people into whom “the love of God has been poured out through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” God Bless, Fr Ladu

Third Sunday of Lent: Year A
Introduction: Water is one of the most common things on planet earth. We use it for drinking and washing, for gardening, cooking and cleaning. We use if for relaxation and exercise. Water is also a symbol of deeper realities, and we meet some of that symbolism in today’s gospel reading. We are thirsting for truth, for eternal life.
First Reading: Exodus 17: 3-7 Physical thirst is something we have all experienced. People perish from thirst. The Israelites complained to Moses about their desperate situation of thirst. At God’s word, Moses struck the rock at Horeb, and ‘water flowed and swept down in torrents’ (Ps 77[78]: 20).
Second Reading: Romans 5: 1-2, 5-8 Our hope of reaching the goal of our life’s journey of faith, which is to share in God’s glory, is not an illusion, ‘because the love of God has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit which has been given to us’ (Rom 5: 5).
Gospel: John 4: 5-42 Jesus, tired by his journey, sits down by the well at Sychar. He gently leads the Samaritan woman he meets there to come to faith in him as God’s Messiah, who offers the water that will turn into a spring inside the believer, a spring welling up to eternal life.
St Stephen’s Primary School at Algester
is currently accepting enrolment applications from Catholic families in our local parish for Prep 2018. Interviews with Principal, Phillip Manitta, will commence in April. In Timor-Leste, Martina was driven from her home by domestic violence. The Protection Program connected her with livelihood training opportunities, offering the chance to afford education for her eight children and a safe life in a supportive community.
Please donate to Project Compassion 2017 and help empower women in Timor-Leste to recover from domestic violence, develop sustainable livelihoods, and lead a life of dignity. You can donate through Parish boxes and envelopes, by visiting www.caritas.org.au/projectcompassion or phoning 1800 024 413.
‘THE JOY OF LOVE’ FROM POPE FRANCIS
The Tenderness of an Embrace
30. Every family should look to the icon of the Holy Family of Nazareth. Its daily life had its share of burdens and even nightmares, as when they met with Herod’s implacable violence. This last was an experience that, sad to say, continues to afflict the many refugee families who in our day feel rejected and helpless. Like the Magi, our families are invited to contemplate the Child and his Mother, to bow down and worship him (cf. Mt 2: 11). Like Mary, they are asked to face their family's challenges with courage and serenity, in good times and bad, and to keep in their heart the great things which God has done (cf. Lk 2: 19, 51). The treasury of Mary’s heart also contains the experiences of every family, which she cherishes. For this reason, she can help us understand the meaning of these experiences and to hear the message God wishes to communicate through the life of our families.
