NATIONAL EMS WEEKIn 1974, President Gerald Ford authorized EMS Week to celebrate EMS practitioners and the important work theydo in our nation's communities. Back then, EMS was a new profession, and EMS practitioners had only just startedto be recognized as a critical component of emergency medicine and the public health safety net.

A lot has changed since then. EMS is now firmly established as an essential public function and a vital componentof the medical care continuum. On any given day, EMS practitioners help save lives by responding to medical emergencies, including heart attack, difficulty breathing, a fall or accident, drowning, cardiac arrest, stroke, drug overdose or acute illness. EMS may provide both basic and advanced medical care at the scene of an emergencyand en route to a hospital. EMS practitioners care for their patients' medical needs and show caring and compassion to their patients in their most difficult moments.

With the development of mobile integrated healthcare and community paramedicine (MIH-CP), EMS is also increasingly a valued participant in achieving the nation's overall healthcare goals of improved patient health and lowered cost.

Percival Lowell was a highly respected astronomer in the late19th, early 20th century. Lowell became obsessed with the planetMars. He insisted he saw canals on Mars through his telescope in-dicating there was or used to be life there. Though others did notsee these canals, Lowell was so highly respected that his viewswere accepted as truth. Few would contradict him.

Of course, improved telescopes and spacecraft decades ago re-vealed there were no canals on Mars. So what was the problem?It has been suggested Lowell suffered from an eye disease thatmade him see the blood vessels in his own eyes. Park is home to Walker Tavern Historic Site – historic buildings

and museum exhibits that tell the story of settlement, transporta-

tion and tourism in Michigan history. The historic buildings open

for the 2017 season in conjunction with the season’s first Walker

Tavern Historic Site Farmers Market.
