The speaker this week, Daniel Woodrow, started work with Motor Neurone Disease Associaon (MND) Victoria when his father was in the advanced stages of this disease. Hence Daniel s role as Manager of Supporter Development and Communicaon is as much a passion as a job. Daniel gave a very illuminang talk that highlighted some basic informaon about MND. MND, a progressive, neurological disease which is fatal in all cases, kills off the neurones that send the messages to the muscles. This disease can manifest itself in many different ways, such as drop foot’, or changes in speech. Diagnosis is generally made by ruling out everything else that could cause the symptoms and the average life expectancy aſter diagnosis is 27 months. There are generally about 450 people in Victoria suffering from MND at any given me. About 90% of MND sufferers are sporadic cases, with no apparent cause, while 10% are familial due to a genec cause. About half of the staff at MND work to provide guidance and liaison with support services such as NDIS, while the other work of MND is to provide sufferers with equipment such as hoists, wheelchairs, reclining armchairs and the like. In parcular, sufferers over 65 will be provided with support as they will not be eligible for NDIS packages. MND also provides informaon ses- sions about the MND pathway that lies ahead and contributes about $400,000 per annum to research. Despite the amount of research being conducted into MND, the complexity of this dis- ease is making progress towards a cure very slow and Daniel feels it is unlikely that a cure will be found any me soon. Board meetings—1st Monday of the month at 5.30 pm by Zoom.

The speaker this week, Daniel Woodrow, started work with Motor Neurone Disease Association (MND) Victoria when his father was in the advanced stages of this disease. Hence Daniel’s role as Manager of Supporter Development and Communication is as much a passion as a job.

Daniel gave a very illuminating talk that highlighted some basic information about MND.

MND, a progressive, neurological disease which is fatal in all cases, kills off the neurones that send the messages to the muscles. This disease can manifest itself in many different ways, such as ‘drop foot’, or changes in speech. Diagnosis is generally made by ruling out everything else that could cause the symptoms and the average life expectancy after diagnosis is 27 months. There are generally about 450 people in Victoria suffering from MND at any given time. About 90% of MND sufferers are sporadic cases, with no apparent cause, while 10% are familial due to a genetic cause.

About half of the staff at MND work to provide guidance and liaison with support services such as NDIS, while the other work of MND is to provide sufferers with equipment such as hoists, wheelchairs, reclining armchairs and the like. In particular, sufferers over 65 will be provided with support as they will not be eligible for NDIS packages. MND also provides information ses-sions about the MND pathway that lies ahead and contributes about $400,000 per annum to research. Despite the amount of research being conducted into MND, the complexity of this dis-ease is making progress towards a cure very slow and Daniel feels it is unlikely that a cure will be found any time soon.

International Assembly for 2021-2022

Due to the pandemic, the International Assembly this year is being

conducted as a virtual gathering, from February 1—11. This event

provides the opportunity to acknowledge the international nature of

Rotary with participants from more than 200 countries, for training

sessions for the DGsE and for inspiring messages from the World

President and the President Elect. As part of his presentation, Presi-

dent Holger Knaack stressed the five values of Rotary, service, fellow-

ship, diversity, integrity and leadership.

One highlight of the IA each year is the announcement by the

President Elect of the theme for the next Rotary year, which is shown

in the graphic below.

Reminder

Now we are meeting in person, it is

time to gather

up any corks

and used

stamps to deliv-

er to Murray

Wilson, who can

move them on

to further usefulness.

In addition, the collection of coins

and notes to go to UNICEF, organ-

ised by Ron Brooks, is still in opera-

tion. While no one has collected

any foreign coinage from their

travels in the last 11 months, many

people have been cleaning out cup-

boards and may have found some

forgotten booty.

World President Holger Knaack and President Elect Shekhar Mehta,

with their partners

President Elect Shekhar Mehta and Rashi Mehta announce the theme

‘The Week that’s been’

Club happenings this week:

• Application is being made for a Community Grant to support Foot-

hills Community Care and the Girl Guides by refurbishing the FTG

Guide Hall. Hopefully the grant will be sufficient to refurbish the

whole kitchen.

• A team has been entered for the Relay for Life for Knox at $25 per

team member. This event will be on Saturday March 13 from 12

noon—10 pm. Team members will not need to be there for the

whole time but there will need to be someone on the track at any

given time. Club banners and the Club gazebo will be erected to

publicise the presence of Rotary and the baton being used will be

the R100 baton.

• The Peppertree Hill Retirement Village ladies have been inspired to

help out with the Santa sacks for Backpacks 4 VIC Kids and have

been busily sewing. They have also let us know that they have an-

other collection of goods ready to be delivered to the Backpacks

factory in Cranbourne West.

• It was agreed that the Club will run a virtual ANZAC Day service

again.

Reflections on an Australia Day event

Neil Marshall last Tuesday attended an Australia Day event with President Marg Vesey at Monbulk Football Club rooms. This event was to celebrate community groups, such as the Fire Brigade, which are so crucial to rural communities.

Neil was very impressed with the sense of community that was in evidence on this day.

He also enjoyed revisiting the football ground where he played games of footy as a young man and where he won a Grand Final.

Members would be aware that Back Packs 4 VIC Kids distributed thousands of Santa

sacks to children in out-of-home care for Christmas 2020, and that several Club mem-

bers contributed their sewing skills to make some Santa sacks.

President Marg, in her usual organised way, has sourced the materials required to make

several hundred Santa sacks for next year and is keen to do this task early in the year.

So, volunteers are invited to take part in a working bee on Saturday February 13th at

the Vesey’s home, 12 Clow Ave, Ferntree Gully, from 10 am— 2 pm. There are plenty of

jobs not requiring sewing expertise so any helpers will be gladly welcomed.

If everyone brings a small plate to share, we will take a break for lunch. Please let Marg know if you intend to be

there.

Rotary has survived for 100 years in Australia.

We have survived 2020.

For many, cooking and eating was a large part of gaining joy and

fulfilment in this abnormal year just past.

To celebrate, let’s share some of the recipes that have contributed to

keeping us on a steady keel during 2020.

The recipes might be:

• newly found, but now a family favourite

• something shared with other friends and family during this time

• a vintage recipe from an old cookbook, maybe even in your mother’s

handwriting

• contributing to building your repertoire, such as sourdough bread making.

There might be a story attached to the recipe, or a special tip for success, or some deeper understanding of

the role of various ingredients that could be shared.

Any or all of these will be welcome.

Please send your recipes to [email protected] or [email protected], for compilation and

distribution as a memento in the centenary year.

Daniel Woodrow MND Vic—contd

• Observed at a local restaurant…. enough said.

• We send our love and sympathy to Heather on the death

of her mother this week, at the wonderful age of 95.

• Neil and Michelle are enjoying their Sydney sojourn, although their

Christmas plans were upended by the lockdown in parts of Sydney. We

look forward to seeing them back in Melbourne at the end of Feb.

• DGE Daryl and partner Jenny take another step on the ‘DG road’ this

week by attending multiple sessions of the virtual International

Assembly. Not quite the same as being in Florida with 550 other DGsE,

but a lot safer in this time of rampant coronavirus in the US!

• Now that interstate travel is possible, Jeff and Veronica are enjoying

their annual trip to Kirra Beach to recharge their batteries.

• Great to see Bob back with us, looking a picture of health.

• How wonderful it is to be able to meet again in-person,

after 11 months of only seeing each other on Zoom! Fin-

gers crossed that this situation can be maintained

throughout the year.

• To amend an error made in last week’s newsletter, we congratulate

James and Beverley who will celebrate their 60th Wedding Anniversary

next week.

D9810 Vision for

Clubs in 2020-

2021

Clubs that are inspired to

collaborate on bigger, bold-

er Community, International

and Vocational projects in

a season of limited funds

and bigger needs; clubs that

are not only surviving but

Objects of Rotary 1. The development of

acquaintance as an oppor-

tunity for service;

2. High ethical standards in

business and professions;

the recognition of the wor-

thiness of all useful occupa-

tions; and the dignifying of

each Rotarian’s occupation

as an opportunity to serve

society;

3. The application of the ideal

of service in each Rotarian’s

personal, business and com-

munity life.

4. The advancement of inter-

national understanding, good-

will and peace through a world

fellowship of business and

professional persons united in

the ideal of service.

Daniel also outlined the communication technology available under the

brand name ‘Eye Gaze’, which involves a screen and a camera that tracks

the movement of the pupil of the eye, which is then converted into

speech. This technology needs intensive training and is tiring to use but

when mastered is an invaluable means of communication. Daniel high-

lighted the abilities of this technology when he described how his father

used this method to speak at his wedding.

A final point to note is that MND Victoria is a different organisation to

Neal Daniher’s FightMND organisation, which concentrates on research

towards finding a cure.

This was a very interesting talk and we appreciate Daniel making the time

available to visit us.
