It’s Time for the Great Backyard Bird Count! The 2014 Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC), a four-day event that generates a real-time snapshot of bird life in the U.S. and around the world, will run from Friday, February 14 through Monday, February 17. Birdwatchers of all ages and experience levels are invited to serve in this global citizen science project. The event is a great way for people of all ages and backgrounds to connect with nature and make a difference for birds. It’s free and easy! Counts can take place anywhere! Simply count birds for at least 15 minutes on one or more days of the event and enter your sightings at www.BirdCount.org. Why count birds for the GBBC? Researchers use data generated by the event, along with observations from other citizen science projects, to get the “big picture” about bird populations. The information gathered by tens of thousands of volunteers helps track the health of bird populations at a scale that would not otherwise be possible. Last year, more than 134,935 citizen scientists counted 34,512,432 birds in the first ever global bird count. More than 34.5 million birds and 3,610 species were recorded—nearly one third of the world’s total bird species documented in just four days! Learn more about the count at www.BirdCount.org where you can get started by creating an account and downloading a checklist. On this site, you will also find photos, identification tips, sounds, maps and other useful tools to make the most of your GBBC experience. “People who care about birds can change the world,” said Audubon Chief Scientist Gary Langham. “Technology has made it possible for people everywhere to unite around a shared love of birds and a commitment to protecting them.” The Great Backyard Bird Count is a joint project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society with partner Bird Studies Canada. Frozen in Time:The Tobyhanna millpond #1 ice Harvest The 21st Annual Tobyhanna Millpond #1 Ice Harvest is planned for Saturday, February 15.

The highly anticipated community event celebrates the historic practice of ice harvesting and its roots in the Pocono Mountains.

Ice harvesting was once a major industry in our region. In the days before electric refrigerators, natural ice was used to preserve food in household iceboxes. Much of the ice distributed throughout the New York Metropolitan Area was harvested from ponds and lakes in the Poconos.

Each year, dozens of volunteers assemble to re-create the winter harvests. Antique equipment is used to cut and extract ice from the Millpond, and horses are used to pull the heavy blocks up restored wooden ramps and into the nearby icehouse. The insulated house preserves the crop until summer, when local organizations use the ice for picnics and special events.

All are welcome to learn the lore, watch the action and lend a helping hand in the harvest! Festivities begin at 9 a.m. and continue until the icehouse is full (approximately 3 p.m.).

Shawnee Mountain hosts Cancer Awareness Weekend Hit the slopes and have some fun for a great cause! Shawnee Mountain Ski Area will host a Cancer Awareness Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, February 8 and 9. On Saturday, all are welcome to Paint the Mountain Pink for breast cancer awareness. Guests are encouraged to dress in pink and participate in fun activities throughout the day. The first 200 guests will receive a free pink headband compliments of Shawnee Mountain. A raffle, to benefit the Hope for Strength Breast Cancer Fund, will be drawn at 5 p.m. Prizes include a 2014/15 Shawnee Mountain Season Pass, a two-night stay at the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort, and a Flow snowboard with bindings. On Sunday, skiers and snowboarders of all ages and abilities are invited to participate in the Joe Reisle Memorial Race Against Cancer. All proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society. Non-skiers can contribute to the Race Against Cancer by purchasing “In Honor Of” or “In Memory Of” donation cards at Guest Services. Sculpted Ice Works presents its eighth annual Crystal Cabin Fever event: Around the World in ICE February 7-23. In this interview, Ice Works’ Office Manager Kristen Johnson tells us more about the interactive ice display, its history, and how the event has evolved over the years. TWIP: Take us through the history of

Crystal Cabin Fever. How did the event come to be, and how has it evolved over the last eight years?

KJ: The event began over 8 years ago when Sculpted Ice Works was much smaller. Mark Crouthamel, Owner, wanted to create an event that would get people out of the house to enjoy winter. The first one was held at Tanglewood Ski Area. It was not too successful, a few hundred people came. We grew from there, making the display much bigger and eventually added the 50 ft. ice slide, more vendors, and of course wine tasting. We now bring in over 12,000 people.

TWIP: This year’s Crystal Cabin Fever event is Around the World in ICE. Where did this theme come from, and what is the process for selecting themes each year?

KJ: We usually meet at the end of the previous year’s event and discuss different ideas for the next Cabin Fever. We sort of brain storm the themes and pick the one that we feel will have the most amount of potential sculptures. We do this every year to pick the theme.

TWIP: This year’s event runs daily from February 7 through the 23rd. When did you begin carving and setting up for the celebration?

KJ: We began to build Cabin Fever the first week in January.

TWIP: Approximately how much time has been spent carving sculptures for the display? How does your crew design and form each piece?

KJ: Overall I’d say that we take well over 150 hours with a team

to design, build, and carve Cabin Fever. Each piece is drawn out on graph paper and scaled to size. Then we figure out the placement of all of the designs. Next, we stack blocks of ice, using forklifts, to make the piece. The next step is the chainsaw! Then we finish each piece using small hand tools to add in the detail.

TWIP: Which sculpture has been the most challenging to create this year? What did that process involve?

KJ: The ice slide always requires the most effort. It is very large and we need it to be safe, so it takes the most time. We have to make the ice blocks and cut them all to a specific size—10 inches thick. We stack and carve them into the slide shape. We have to make sure that each block is placed perfectly to avoid humps and [ensure] safety. It takes a team of 5-7 guys to build the slide.

TWIP: This year’s sculptures were carved from 100 tons of ice. Where does all that ice come from and what will be done with it when the event is over?

KJ: We manufacture all of our ice in our on-site plant. We sometimes also get local lake ice, but this year we were unable to, so all of the ice is ours. We use 100 tons plus of ice each Cabin Fever. After the event, we let most of the ice melt on its own and some we haul out of the barn and let it melt elsewhere on our property.

TWIP: Guests are bound to be chilly after all of the icy entertainment. How can guests warm up at Crystal Cabin Fever? What kinds of refreshments will be available?

KJ: We suggest cold weather gear. To warm up, sit by the fire pit and sip a warm cup of hot cocoa, or visit the Settlers Inn stand and grab a cup of coffee with a drop of top-of-the-line liquor. Better yet, warm up in the Factory Tour and Ice Harvest Museum—the building is heated. As for refreshments, the Settlers Inn will be serving soup and other food. We will also have hot dogs and hot pretzels.

TWIP: Tell us a bit about the ice-carving competitions. Will you have celebrity carvers? What are the times and dates for this year’s games?

KJ: This year, we will have some local celebrities compete for their favorite charities on February 8. February 9 will be a professional elimination; February 22 will be an “Ice Fight” speed elimination theme, and February 23 will be a professional speed elimination.

TWIP: Access to the Sculpted Ice Works Factory Tour and Ice Harvest Museum is free during Crystal Cabin Fever. What can attendees expect to see on the tours?

KJ: Yes, the tour is included in admission. They can expect to see tools that were used to harvest ice from our local lakes, learn how ice was harvested before refrigeration, see how we make our ice now, and learn how ice sculptures are made.

WHY THE LAKE NAOMI~TIMBER TRAILS MARKET IS HEALTHY(While other markets around the country struggle - is this a buyer’s market?)Real estate markets have always been local in nature. Apartments in New York City are still commanding loftyprices, and homes in the Charlotte area are still increasing. Yet, rampant speculative building in many parts of thecountry nearly collapsed their markets. To perpetuate the nonsense, strategic financing schemes lured custom-ers deeper into the boiling cauldron. For home buyers and for speculators alike, mortgages were easily obtainedwith little or no documentation. If you had a pulse, a mortgage was waiting. Don't bother with the details... priceswill always go up to cover the excesses. Sadly, it’s not always so.

Thankfully, Lake Naomi~Timber Trails has been a different story. During the forty plus years we’ve been here atLake Naomi there have been some violent swings in both the real estate market and the stock market. Very re-cently, the stock market’s acrobatics were enough to give any sane person a concussion. Here in our local realestate market, we’ve remained rather steady. Did you know the average sale in the last 12 months is lower by aminuscule 1%? From June 2008, the median sale is up 7%!** How is that possible? First and foremost, we are notin a primary home market. The vast majority of our homes are discretionary purchases and our clientele is morefinancially stable and financially adept than the average first-time home buyer. If our clients aren’t paying cash,they’re taking plain-vanilla fixed-rate conventional mortgages. We dodged the scathing sub-prime mortgagefiasco. Too few lots remain for overbuilding or speculative building to ever be a problem.

Every year, at Memorial Day, we hold our breath anticipating the new season. After reading in the media about theweak markets in other parts of the country, we were particularly curious this year. Memorial Day weekend marksthe start of our main selling season, and we couldn't have been more surprised or delighted.

Over Memorial Day weekend, we sold five houses, one in Lake Naomi for $790,000 and one in Timber Trails for$450,000. It was most encouraging to observe multiple offers come in on one of the properties. Neither deal wasgiven away. One sold for 90.2% of the asking price, and the other for 92%.

This was one of the best starts for any summer season in memory!

** Lake Naomi is a diverse community of home values, ranging from under $200,000 to over $1,000,000.A single million dollar lakefront sale can significantly skew the average, making the median sale price a far moresignificant indicator of market trends.

CAMP MINSI PROJECT STRENGTHENS OUR PROPERTY VALUES(An assist from an unusual source)Hopefully, you have already read the article in the Lake Naomi Club newsletter, “Reflections,” that explains howthe Wildlands Conservancy, the Monroe County Open Space Program, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylva-nia have created a plan to protect the 1,242 acre Camp Minsi from future development or commercializa-tion. Camp Minsi is the Boy Scouts of America property immediately to the east of Lake Naomi that residesalong Stillwater Lake. The exact method the property will be protected is not significant. What is significant,however, is the fact that all that land will never be developed in competition to Lake Naomi~Timber Trails.

Virtually all the lakes of any significance in the Poconos have already been subdivided and developed. CampMinsi is one of the remaining exceptions that has access to a sizeable lake, and, is right in our back yard. Now,however, we will no longer have to wonder what will be built there. The answer is nothing... and in perpetuity.

The property is about a third larger than Timber Trails, so it had the potential to be a competitor for many years.By removing potential development, folks looking for a quality lake community will have their sights focusedmore acutely than ever on Lake Naomi~Timber Trails.

New roads have enhanced access to Lake Naomi, and the lack of meaningful competition will have a substan-tial effect on our future property values. We didn’t create the law of supply and demand - we merelywatch its effect.

Take the PauPack Plunge! On Saturday, February 15, courageous volunteers will leap into the icy waters of Lake Wallenpaupack to raise money for local dive and rescue teams. This exhilarating annual event, The Paupack Plunge, will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the shores of the Lighthouse Harbor Marina. Members of the Tafton Water Rescue Team and the Ledgedale Dive Team will supervise as brave souls walk right from the shoreline into the frigid lake. Fifteen to twenty plungers will be welcomed into the water every 30 minutes. The goal of this chilling charity event is to raise money for the two local rescue teams. A minimum donation of $25 is required for participation. All divers will receive a complimentary Paupack Plunge t-shirt. Shirts will be available at the event. There will also be door prizes and gifts for the plungers who raise the most money. Inside the Marina, attendees can enjoy live music, warm refreshments and special “Plunge Day” sales. All are welcome to take the plunge or watch the action from the shore. Costumes are encouraged for divers and spectators. Carpooling is strongly suggested. Entrants under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian’s signature and supervision during the plunge. Registration forms are available online, and can be submitted on the day of the event.
