Fore! Ice Tee Golf Tournament in February Golf lovers: no need to wait for spring to hit the links in the Poconos. The 21st
Annual Ice Tee Golf Tournament, based from Ehrhardt’s Waterfront Resort on Lake
Wallenpaupack, gives golf enthusiasts the opportunity to tee up in the middle of winter.
The legendary Lake Wallenpaupack event features two challenging 9-hole courses,
complete with tree-lined fairways that are designed using recycled Christmas trees
donated by participants, spectators and local nurseries. Water traps, roughs and obstacles
are carved into the ice. Players will receive a colored golf ball plus a scorecard and map
illustrating the course layout, and are allowed up to three clubs, including a putter.
The February 26 event also includes prizes for “craziest” sled, “wackiest” hat, and the
golfers who land the closest drive to “Wally Paupack,” the snowman-mascot of the Pocono
Mountains Lake Region. DJ Have a Blast will create a party atmosphere. Presented by the
Pocono Lake Region Chamber of Commerce, major
sponsors include Lowe’s, Ehrhardt’s Waterfront
Resort and Crystal Cabin Fever.
Tee times are every 10 minutes beginning at 9
a.m. until 2 p.m. The awards ceremony is scheduled
for approximately 3 p.m. at Ehrhardt’s Waterfront
Resort. “Green Fees” are a non-refundable
donation of $15 per golfer in advance; and $20
on day of the event. Reservations are suggested.

SKI THE POCONO MOUNTAINSA PREMIER ski destination since 1946 when snowmaking was fi rst introduced, according
to USA Today’s Travel Tips, the Pocono Mountains boast seven ski resorts that cater to
every level of skier, snowboarder, snowblader and snowtuber. Blessed with an abundance
of natural beauty, the Poconos offer snow sports enthusiasts the opportunity to spend
more time on the slopes and less time standing in lines and driving through traffi c.
POCONO MOUNTAIN resorts and lodges offer a range of ski and stay packages, which
make elite winter sports available to more enthusiasts. Swank accommodations, such as

The Art of Ice FishingThe Art of Ice Fishing With a lure all its own, Ice Fishing is equal parts action, relaxation, contemplation and exhilaration. Due to
an abundance of pristine lakes, streams and rivers, the Pocono Mountains are the perfect place to get hooked
on this popular winter sport.
To make the most of an Ice Fishing expedition, consider taking a course. The Pocono Environmental
Education Center (PEEC) offers several courses for learning basics and beyond. Cost is minimum—$10—and all
equipment is provided. The PEEC courses don’t require you to have a fi shing license. See Current Events in this
magazine and visit the PEEC online at www.peec.org for dates and times of courses.
If you have a fi shing license and are ready to tackle an Ice Fishing outing, remember to follow these
safety measures:
❅❅ Dress in warm layers.
❅ Use an auger to test the thickness of the ice before stepping on to it.
Four inches of solid ice are recommended for a small group.
❅❅ Blue/black ice is stronger than milky white ice.
❅ Perimeter ice is weaker than ice further away from the banks.
Avoid areas with protruding docks, logs and plants, which can
absorb heat and damage the ice.
❅❅ Changing air temperatures and standing water on ice can crack
ice. Stay away from areas where cracks meet or intersect.
❅ Never Ice Fish alone.
❅❅ Always wear a life jacket.

Winged Migration: Eagles Flourish in the Poconos One of the most majestic sights circling the sky,
the eagle represents strength, courage and grace.
Lofty, dignifi ed, the eagle doesn’t fl it from place to
place. Rather, the eagle discovers a beautiful place to
land, replenish and recreate.
Among Pennsylvania’s many splendors is
its abundance of eagles that are attracted to the
unspoiled nature of the Pocono Mountains.
During winter, hundreds of bald eagles migrate
to the Poconos, joining a thriving population of
resident eagles. Not only are eagle sightings more
abundant in winter, it’s also the most ecologically
sound time of year to seek out these spectacular birds.
On Saturdays and Sundays from January through mid-March, the Eagle Institute in Lackawaxen and various
outdoor clubs—including the Pennsylvania Environmental Education Center (PEEC), Wallenpaupack Environmental
Learning Center, Monroe County Environmental Education Center (MEEC) and the Pennsylvania Audubon Society—
sponsor Eagle Watching excursions. For more a comprehensive listing of these Eagle-watching excursions,
see the “Coming Events” listings in this magazine.
Crossing Paradise on Skis Cross-country skiing is a wonderful way for snow lovers to enjoy the
wintery beauty of the Pocono Mountains. With plenty of trails that wind through
evergreen forests and along glacial lakes, the ancient Pocono Mountains offer
respite from busy urban life while providing plenty of opportunities to head
outdoors for fun.
The Pocono Environmental Education Center sponsors cross-country ski
outings and provides equipment rentals. Many of the area’s parks and private
resorts also feature the sport. To maximize your enjoyment, call ahead to make sure conditions are favorable and
equipment is available. Also, check “Coming Events” in this magazine for guided excursions.
Here are just a few of the many spots where you can revel in the thrill of country-skiing amid some of nature’s
fi nest bounty:
Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area—McDade Recreational Trail, River Road, Bushkill;
(570) 426-2435.
French Manor Inn and Spa—50 Huntingdon Drive, South Sterling; (877) 720-6090.
Poconos Environmental Education Center—538 Emery Road, Dingmans Ferry; (570) 828-2319.
Skytop Lodge—1 Skytop; (800) 345-7759.
The Inn at Pocono Manor—Route 314, Pocono Manor; (800) 233-8150.
Tobyhanna State Park—Route 423 at intersection of I-380, Tobyhanna; (570) 894-8336.
