The City of Barrie would like to advise all interested individuals and parties that a second Open House will be held today, May 5th for the development of the City of Barrie’s Sustainable Waste Management Strategy. The Strategy will promote effective, efficient, and responsible change to our waste collection, diversion and disposal systems for the next 20 years. The Strategy will be a community- based plan, with goals, policies and a vision focused on issues that are important to the residents of Barrie. Community Engagement is critical to ensure that the views and values of the community are incorporated in the development of the Strategy. The City is pleased to announce the commencement of their engagement program with this series of Open Houses. The second Open House will be held today, Thursday, May 5th from 4pm to 8pm at the East Bayfield Community Centre at 80 Livingstone St. East. This Open House will provide an important opportunity for the City to hear what residents think about current waste management practices, as well as your suggestions for the future. In addition to developing the Strategy, the City has recently been approached by the Barrie Windcatchers, a private organization that is proposing the development of a 2 megawatt (MW) wind turbine on the Barrie Landfill Site. The City is evaluating the potential impacts of the construction and operation of the wind turbine on current and potential future landfill operations. This impact assessment will be presented and discussed with community members at the Open House. Please visit the City’s website for additional information and opportunities for feedback. www.barrie.ca Emergency Preparedness Week M ay 1-7, 2011 is Emergency Preparedness (EP) Week in Canada. Is your family ready? If not, EP Week is the perfect time to prepare for the unexpected emergency. The City of Barrie, like most communities across the country, encourages residents during EP Week to identify and learn about risks in their communities and how they can protect themselves. Being Aware of the potential hazards and risks you face and Being Ready are the best steps to ensure that you and your family will survive an emergency or disaster. Be Aware & Be Aware Know The Risks – Although the consequences of disasters can be similar, knowing the risks specific to your neighbourhood and our city can help us better prepare. During winter time in Barrie, we face a number of hazards such as: severe winter storms of heavy snow or freezing rain and high winds. In the summer we experience summer storms of heavy rain, severe hail and strong winds; even a tornado is possible. In extreme cases, we can experience deep chills in winter and heat waves in summer as well as power outages caused by the severe weather, hazardous material accidents and communicable diseases and health emergencies. It’s always a good idea to stay aware by following weather and emergency event forecasts online, on the radio and television. Make a plan – Every Canadian household needs an emergency plan. It will help you and your family to know what to do, where to go, where to stay and who to contact if disaster strikes. Ensure your plan includes the special needs of family members, such as where to get medical devices or prescription medication in an emergency. Also don’t forget your pets as their safety is your responsibility. Normally, only service dogs are permitted in evacuation centres, so develop a list of friendly places where they can stay and when warnings of an impending emergency are given, call and confirm emergency shelter arrangements for your pet. Prepare Emergency Supplies – During an emergency, we may need to get by without power or tap water. We will all need some basic supplies, to be self-sufficient for up to 72 hours. All emergency supplies should include bottled water, non-perishable food, crank radio or radio and batteries, flashlights and batteries, footwear and clothing, toiletries, medication and important papers. The supplies you would need if you have to evacuate should be kept readily available in a ‘Go Bag’ that you can quickly grab on the way out. Again don’t forget to cate for the special needs of family members and your pets. It is also a good idea to prepare additional kits that you can keep in your car, at work and at the cottage as it is very likely that you may not be at home when emergency strikes. During an emergency – Get your emergency kit, follow your plan and listen for instructions from radio or television broadcasts. Make sure you are safe before helping others and stay put until all is safe or you are ordered to evacuate. Businesses Should Plan Too Business owners, municipal officials and utility operators should also be prepared to ensure the continuity of their businesses and services in the case of an emergency. Protecting information and assets and updating emergency plans are all crucial in assuring community preparedness. Get More Tips During EP Week You can learn more about how you can prepare your family or business for disasters by visiting Emergency Planning in the Living section of www.Barrie.ca. You can also pick up emergency preparedness material on how to make a plan and an emergency kit at City facilities or download “Your Emergency Preparedness Guide” at www.GetPrepared.ca Emergency preparedness is everyone’s responsibility. Being Aware and Being Ready will ensure that You Are Prepared which will help you to reduce anxiety and aid in recovering from an emergency situation. Make your emergency plan and prepare your emergency supplies today for a safer tomorrow. Public Open House Being Held Today Event!

Please visit the City’s website for additional information and opportunities for feedback. www.barrie.ca

Emergency Preparedness Week

M ay 1-7, 2011 is Emergency Preparedness (EP) Week in Canada.

Be Aware & Be AwareKnow The Risks – Although the consequences of disasters can be similar, knowing the risks specific to your neighbourhood and our city can help us better prepare.

It is also a good idea to prepare additional kits that you can keep in your car, at work and at the cottage as it is very likely

that you may not be at home when emergency strikes.

During an emergency – Get your emergency kit, follow your plan and listen for instructions from radio or television broadcasts. Make sure you are safe before helping others and stay put until all is safe or you are ordered to evacuate. Businesses Should Plan TooBusiness owners, municipal officials and utility operators should also be prepared to ensure the continuity of their businesses and services in the case of an emergency. Protecting information and assets and updating emergency plans are all crucial in assuring community preparedness.

Get More Tips During EP WeekYou can learn more about how you can prepare your family or business for disasters by visiting Emergency Planning in the Living section of www.Barrie.ca.

You can also pick up emergency preparedness material on how to make a plan and an emergency kit at City facilities or download “Your Emergency Preparedness Guide” at www.GetPrepared.ca

Emergency preparedness is everyone’s responsibility. Being Aware and Being Ready will ensure that You Are Prepared which will help you to reduce anxiety and aid in recovering from an emergency situation. Make your emergency plan and prepare your emergency supplies today for a safer tomorrow.
