Saint Mark Mission Day is Sunday, January 24!
The Saint Mark Mission Day and Open Closets Fundraiser has been scheduled
for Sunday, January 24, when we will spend the day focusing on missions and
raise funds for our ministries that serve the vulnerable in our community and
beyond. Events will include a silent auction in the morning and the Miss Open
Closet competition and live auction in the evening! We need lots of help to
make this event happen. If you are interested in having fun while helping
raise funds that will be used to make a difference in the lives of those around
us, contact Rev. Jennifer Hansen at [email protected].
Auction Donations Needed We continue to seek donations for the silent and
live auctions. Do you have a skill or talent (for example, are you a
handyman, photographer, housecleaner or chef) that you could donate to
be auctioned as your gift to mission? If you have an item or service that
could be auctioned to raise money for our mission fund, contact Noey
Barrera at [email protected] or Rev. Jennifer Hansen at
Our first Administrative Council meeting for the year will be held Sunday,
January 31. Members of the Administrative Council are invited to participate
in a work session following the 11:15 Morning Worship service. Lunch will be
provided. More details will be announced soon; in the meantime, be sure to
save the date!
Our Coat Drive continues
Please bring any gently worn coats, scarves, hats, and gloves to church and
drop them off in the bins in the narthex and Wade Hall so that we can share
them with those who come to our doors. Thank you for your generosity!

ANTHEM Break Forth, O Beauteous Heavenly Light Bach Chancel Choir
PASTORAL AND THE LORD’S PRAYER Kim Sorrells Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come,
Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread
and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the
kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
OFFERING OURSELVES TO GOD
The Invitation Kim Sorrells
Offertory Hard Times Come Again No More Foster/Harris Mike Smith, soloist; Greg Smith, accompanist
Let us pause in life's pleasures and count its many tears,
While we all sup sorrow with the poor;
There's a song that will linger forever in our ears;
Oh! Hard times come again no more. 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary,
Hard Times, hard times, come again no more
Many days you have lingered around my cabin door;
Oh! Hard times come again no more.
While we seek mirth and beauty and music light and gay,
There are frail forms fainting at the door;
Though their voices are silent, their pleading looks will say
Oh! Hard times come again no more. 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary,
Hard Times, hard times, come again no more
Many days you have lingered around my cabin door;
Oh! Hard times come again no more.
'Tis a sigh that is wafted across the troubled wave,
'Tis a wail that is heard upon the shore
'Tis a dirge that is murmured around the lowly grave
Oh! Hard times come again no more. 'Tis the song, the sigh of the weary,
Hard Times, hard times, come again no more
Many days you have lingered around my cabin door;
Oh! Hard times come again no more.

POSTLUDE Watchman Fantasie Garber
Music Notes
Today's prelude is a setting of a German chorale by Bach expressing grief at the passing of
the old year and thankfulness for the new. The postlude was written for our organist Donald
by his composition and organ teacher, Dr. J. Ryan Garber, Choirmaster of All Saints
Episcopal Church in Morristown, Tennessee. This Fantasie is based on the early American
tune Watchman, Tell Us of the Night which was also quoted by Charles Ives in his Fourth
Symphony. The tune is by Lowell Mason, the text by John Bowring: Watchman, tell us of
the night, what its signs of promise are. Traveler o'er yon mountains height, see that glory
beaming star. Watchman, does its beauteous ray aught of joy or hope foretell? Traveler, yes
- it brings the day, promised day of Israel.
Today at Saint Mark
Scripture Reader Workshop If you’ve ever considered volunteering to read
Scripture for one of our Morning Worship services, this is a great time to sign
up! If you want to learn more about it first, join us at today’s workshop
immediately following the 11:15 Morning Worship service. If you want to
participate but can’t attend today’s workshop, email coordinator Mike Smith
at [email protected] or Christia Holloway in the church office at
The Foundations Sunday School class invites you to join them for a new study
Soul Keeping: Caring for the most important Part of You by John Ortberg.
Beginning today, this 6 week study will help participants look inward with
humor, grace, and a hunger for a deeper relationship with God. Ortberg
writes "The health of your soul isn't just a matter of saved or unsaved. It's the
hinge on which the rest of your life hangs. It's the difference between deep
satisfied spirituality and a restless, dispassionate faith. In an age of
materialism and consumerism that tries to buy its way to happiness, many
souls are starved and unhealthy, unsatisfied by false promises of status and
wealth." Join us as we start 2016 by nurturing the most important aspect in
each of us, our soul. The Foundations class meets on Sundays in room 111 at
10:10am. Email Susanna Baxter at [email protected] to learn more.
The Faith Seekers Class continues their new 8 week series with author Adam
Hamilton’s book Making Sense of the Bible. The course began last Sunday
and includes weekly videos inviting us into an honest conversation about the
Bible. The book considers fundamental questions such as: How and when
was the Bible written? Which books made it into the scriptures and why? How
literally must we read it? And is the Bible ever wrong? From there Hamilton
considers the real questions people frequently ask that continue to divide
Christians and denominations alike. Today and next Sunday, Jan. 10 & 17:
Making Sense of the Old. The Faith Seekers class meets on Sunday mornings in
room 205 at 10:10am. Contact Jerry Becker ([email protected]) for more details.
The Worship Committee would like to remind you that you have the
opportunity to provide fresh flowers in the sanctuary for Sunday morning worship.
