Performance of
This visual story contains photos and information about the
performance and the Mercury Theatre spaces to help prepare
you for your visit.
The play is being performed at the Mercury Theatre in Colchester.
When you enter the theatre, you will be able to see our Box Office desk. This is
where you can collect your tickets, buy snacks and your programme. It can
sometimes be busy at this desk, especially before a performance starts.
The upstairs bar will be open throughout the show and will be one of our two
break out spaces. There is a TV located in the space which will be live
streaming the show in case you need to leave the auditorium for a bit!
The bar will not be in use and any drinks or snacks will need to be bought
downstairs in the main café bar instead. There is also a new accessible toilet
in the upstairs bar area.
Our second break out space is the Creative Engagement Space – you will
not be able to watch the show in this space but you can get away from it
all for a bit and there will be cushions, mood pillows and other items to play
and interact with in here on the day!
The main toilets can be located on the ground floor, with the female located
just outside the box office and the male and accessible toilet the other side
of the café bar. If you have any issues finding these, please alert a member
of our Customer Experience team who will be wearing Mercury branded t-
shirts.
The show will be taking place in the theatre and you will sit in the
auditorium – there are now 530 seats in total.

The rest of the cast is made up of our junior chorus who take part in various
scenes during the show. The performance is accompanied by live musicians that sit underneath the front
of the stage. These are led by Nick Barstow, the Musical Director. The band
includes piano, drums, percussion, bass guitar and a keyboard.
The performance is split into two halves. The first half, Act One, lasts around 1 hour
15 minutes. Act Two lasts approximately 1 hour.
After the first half there is a break called the interval which lasts around 20
minutes. During this time, you can leave the auditorium if you would like to or you
can stay in your seat.
You can leave your seat at any time during the performance as well if you need to.
We have highlighted any sections which we think you should be aware of in case
you are sensitive to particular stimuli or just because we think you should be
aware of a particular moment before you see it live on stage.
Some of the props/sounds and lighting effects in the pages below will be played
or bought on stage in the pre-show talk. Pre-show talks occur during Relaxed
Performances of Aladdin at the usual start time of the show.
= Visual stimulus
= Sound stimulus
Act 1
Fabra Cadabra enters from the left side of the auditorium, walking
through the door, down stairs and on to the stage. During the first scene, Fabra
speaks to a ring on stage which activates the Ring. The Ring’s speech comes
from a voiceover through speakers. While Fabra informs the audience about her
time as a magician’s assistant, Fabra begins to cough up sponge balls; this is a
magic trick.
During the song ‘Fame’, there is an effect where a flame shoots out of
Fabra’s hand. The flame is small and does not reach the audience.
Whenever Aladdin sings ‘WE WILL, WE WILL’ he asks the audience to sing
‘ROCK YOU!’ Aladdin will do this at various times during the show, you can
join in each time!
When Princess Jasmine enters stage, she is dressed in disguise as a man with
a false beard.
During Widow Twankey’s first speech on stage, there will be lots of
opportunities for audience interaction, this means you can join in and
answer Widow Twankey if she asks you a question!
You and the rest of the audience will be asked to shout out ‘Yootha, your loofah!’
every time you see someone on stage trying to take the loofah. This happens
many times throughout the show.
Fabra Cadabra re-enters and explains she wishes to use Aladdin to get the
Magic Lamp and use the power of it for herself. With this the audience
understands Fabra is the villain of the show and are welcome to ‘Boo’ her every
time she comes on stage!
After Fabra tells the audience her plans, she says ‘Oh, yes I will’, inviting the
audience to shout back ‘Oh, no you won’t!’
During Aladdin and Princess Jasmine’s scene, they are both playing air
guitar. When Princess Jasmine plays her air guitar, loud rock music plays
through the speakers.
When Aladdin and Princess Jasmine get caught at the end of the scene,
Fabra Cadabra freezes Princess Jasmine and Sergeant Nee using her
magical powers. They become unfrozen at the end of the scene.
Fabra Cadabra’s head slides down her chest due to suffering from heavy
dandruff while talking to Aladdin. Aladdin puts her head back in place.
In the next scene, there’s a sign on the wall saying ‘Twankey’s Pamper
Parlour but the ‘R’s are missing so it reads’ Twankey’s Pampe Pa lou’.
In order to hide from the Emperor, Aladdin disguises himself as a woman
called Alabama.
During the Emperor’s first treatment at the pamper parlour, his legs are
manipulated in a strange way. This is done using fake legs as shown in the
picture below.
During the first treatment, Humphrey uses a fake mallet and hits the
Emperor on the back with it. Widow Twankey then stands on the Emperor and
stamps about although Widow Twankey is not actually stood on the Emperor’s
back.
During the second treatment, there are boxing gloves which hit the
Emperor. This is done in a way which means the Emperor is not harmed by the
punches!
During the third treatment, the Emperor is accidentally frozen and
emerges from the machine with icicles all over him and frozen in place.
During the last treatment, the Emperor is put into a steam cabinet but the
‘high heat’ button is accidentally pressed. This melts the Emperor and when
Humphrey and Aladdin [as Alabama] open the cabinet his body is replaced by a
tiny puppet version of himself.
After the treatments, Aladdin [as Alabama] hits the reverse button and
everything in the scene happens again, except this time in reverse. This undoes all
of the accidents from the treatments and the Emperor is back to how he was at the
start of the scene.
Fabra Cadabra enters the scene and freezes everyone except Aladdin as
shown below. As her and Aladdin leave the stage, she snaps them out of their frozen
state.
Once Aladdin and Fabra Cadabra leave to go to the Cave of Wonder
after the scene in Twankey’s Pamper Parlour, Princess Jasmine exits through
the auditorium right stairs. There is no interaction with the audience in this
moment.
Aladdin says ‘Open Sesame’ in order to open the cave. The rock lifts
from under the stage with some sound effects.
On climbing into the cave, Aladdin finds a big spider and a fake
spider is thrown up the hole to Fabra Cadabra. she then throws the spider
into the hole at the front of the stage where the orchestra are sat.
Once Aladdin is in the cave, he picks up the Magic Lamp and asks the
audience ‘What shall I do?’ It is known that by rubbing the lamp, a Genie
will appear so you can shout to Aladdin to rub the lamp to make this happen!
After Aladdin rubs the lamp it begins to produce a small amount of
smoke while more smoke appears at the back of the stage. The Genie of
the Lamp appears!
At the end of the song ‘Hall of Fame’, Aladdin wishes for his Mum [Widow
Twankey] and Humphrey to be in the cave. Both Widow Twankey and
Humphrey arrive on an Elephant at the back of the stage [you can see this
in the picture below].
The Elephant stays in position and does not
come towards the audience.
Fabra Cadabra comes down the auditorium right stairs to begin Act 2 holding
some fake ice creams. You can ‘Boo!’ or give Fabra Cadabra a wave hello if you
want to!
Prince Tarquin the Third [who is played by the same actor who plays
Constable Naw] appears on the auditorium left stairs. He is singing into a
microphone and does not interact directly with the audience.
Fabra Cadabra comes on stage in disguise as an old lamp peddler in
order to try and get the Magic Lamp back.
Fabra Cadabra freezes Princess Jasmine before unfreezing her before taking
Princess Jasmine and the Genie to the Land of the Mummies.
After asking the Ring to provide transportation for Aladdin to the Land
of the Mummies, a large guitar appears on stage with light effects.
Aladdin gets on the guitar and it moves around the stage. The guitar
moves over the first row of the auditorium, starting on the right side of the
auditorium before moving to the left side. There are multiple lighting
effects used during this moment and Aladdin sings ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’. This
moment is pictured below.
During the song ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’, Humphrey arrives on stage on top of a
magic flying carpet. The carpet is much smaller than the guitar and remains
on the stage.
Fabra Cadabra wishes for an army of monstrous Eqyptian mummies to guard
her palace. Once the Genie grants this wish, a Mummy groaning sound effect
is heard. This sound effect will be played in the pre-show talk and features at
various times during the next two scenes.
Widow Twankey and the Emperor arrive to the sound of the trumpeting of an
Elephant. Widow Twankey points a device to the same side of the stage as
the noise and the noise of an electric ‘car lock’ is heard. These noises are loud
and will be played in the pre-show talk.
Widow Twankey, Humphrey and the Emperor sit on a bench and sing a
song to cheer themselves up after hearing the mummies in the distance. During the
song a member of the cast, dressed as a mummy on stilts walks on stage.
The mummy does not interact with the audience but when it appears on stage, the
audience are asked to shout to Widow Twankey, Humphrey and the Emperor to let
them know.
One by one they get taken by the mummy until only Humphrey is on stage. Before
Humphrey can be taken, Aladdin comes on stage to save the day!
The next scene is held in Fabra’s Evil Lair where the junior chorus are dressed
up as mummies.
Two of the mummies on stage open up a trap door which opens up Fabra
Cadabra’s Crocodile Pit. There is green mist, the noises of snapping and roaring
followed by a prop Crocodile emerging from the pit, as shown in the picture below.
Widow Twankey, Humphrey and Aladdin enter the scene disguised as
Cossack dancers.
Fabra Cadabra falls into the Crocodile Pit and her clothes are torn and
shredded by the Crocodile. Shortly after the Genie reappears, the
Crocodile lets out a huge burp and Fabra Cadabra remerges from the
pit.
After this scene, Humphrey and Widow Twankey enter to do some
shoutouts and celebrate any birthdays of those in the audience.
Humphrey has written a special song and asks the audience to sing it
with him and Widow Twankey. The words will be on stage on a giant
song sheet but they are below too, join in and sing along if you want
to!

front of the stage and bowing – this is a chance for you to clap, or wave
your hands to show how much enjoyed the show!
