1 1 This small book I have compiled from many records that I have collected showing the many variants of our name, These records concern my own family which has been associated with Yorkshire, mainly York and the East Riding for several hundred years, with Perhaps some descent from Vaux's of Cumberland or of Flemish origin which inflow commenced very soon after the Norman conquest and later the troubled times of reformation era. For instance it has been record that there were vast hordes of Elemish mercenaries used by the crown at the Battle of the Standard. From the Huguenot Society of London records there are many entries for Norwich & Canterbury such as Vaux, Vose, Vos, Vaucy, Vaws, Vawse, Vause, Voyce. To date I have not been able to obtain any records of Flemish immigrations to the Port of Kingston on Hull. Research on other districts has yet to be done , Leeds, Pontefract, Doncaster, Lincolnshire, Notts., County, The Midlands, The South, & South West of Britain. Years ago I thought the name could have been of Scandinavian origin with the OA of VOASE but that has been eliminated. Ernest Weekley in his 'Surnames' records that VOCE', VOSE, VOICE, VOASE, derives from the French VAUX' Plural for valley, and from the Latin de VALLIBUS being the dative & ablative plural of VALLIS a valley, Another source gives VOAS, VOCE, VOSE as being a teutonic anglicised form of Dutch & Low GERMAN VOS (Fox), low GERMAN Fos, high GERMAN FUCHS, and old High GERMAN VUHS. Abstract of the will of Francis Voase of Anlby County York, widow. I give all real andpersonal estate to my sister Arabella Richardson widow now living with me for herown use and I appoint her executor. Witnesses Wm. Henry Moss solicitorJames Archer his clerk. Made 25.1.1853. Passed 4-7-1895Abstract of a report from the College of Arms London dated 18-10-1967. A search has been made in the records of the college for all entries in the name of Voase. There is, it appears, only one entry, that being a royal licence dated 30-12-1859 authorising James Ringrose of Cottingham Co., York, merchant and Fanny Voase Elizabeth Ringrose his wife, maternal niece of William Voase of Anlaby House, Kingston-upon-Hull to take the name of Voase in lieu of that of Ringrose. There is no reference to Armorial Bearings in terms of the Royal licence, neither isthere any mention found of Voase Arms elsewhere in the records, It is of interest however That Burk's General armory and Papworth's Ordinary both give Arms blazoned by the client as being those of Voase of Anlaby House,Though both sources are of course completely unofficial. The family of Ringrose - Voase resided at Anlaby House until 1919. To day Anlaby House accommodates the offices of Anlaby Rural District Council.

APPLETON le STREET, - four miles from Malton on the old Roman road leading to Hovingham. From the Parish Registers there is one entry of Vaux. William Vaux bachelor and Margaret Goodrich spinster married by banns 29.10,1727

AUGHTON - an old village eleven miles north of Howden where the River Derwent floods its meadows, Has a old Norman Church with the earliest record in the Registers of our name as spelt Voase. At the castle home of the Aske's, lived Sir Robert Aske who with many others challenged Thomas Cromwell and Henry V111 who were desecrating church property which eventually led to the rebellion known as the Pilgrimage of Grace 1536, Robert Aske led his contingent up to London met the king who treated him well and promised that no more monasteries should be closed, on these conditions Aske returned to the north, but nothing happened thus rebellion broke out again. Leaders were arrested their followers crushed, and men were hanged in hundreds from trees in Yorkshire lanes. Robert Aske was executed with the rest, drawn on a hurdle to York castle and hanged in chains.
